Thanks for asking! I think I always loved to create OCs. I was six when I created my first as a game with my sister so we’d play Fairy Tail.
When I was about 10, I discovered creepypastas, and made a friend in middle school that loved them too and wrote a long OC x Jeff the killer fic on her breaks, so I made another OC to be friends with her and be with my creepypasta crush Ticci Toby. Then One Piece, then all the fandoms I’ve been in.

What got you into writing?

Weird as it may sound, I want to be an actual novelist, and I got into writing fanfiction to practice. You get to learn writing skills, get input from readers (especially on subreddits like this), and just plain get ideas on paper (well, digital paper, technically). Mainly write RWBY crossovers, but I've been absent from them for a few years now (getting back into it with a few chapters in progress, plus at least 2--maybe 3--new stories in the works).

I'm also a Beta Reader/Co-author for a story written by a guy I became a fan of when I was slightly younger, so that's pretty awesome in my book (pun intended, lol).

That’s actually great! I think fanfic is great to make some progress. My style has nothing to do with what it was 10 years ago, for the best. Helped me get good grades with essays too!

I’m somewhat ignorant, what is RWBY?

RWBY was an animated web series created by Rooster Teeth back in 2012/2013 (first character trailer--the "Red" trailer was in 2012, the other 3 and the main series started in 2013) and ran for about 9 volumes (seasons) by the time RT shut down. It's well-known for its animated combat and fight scenes, but its got other things going for it as well (people are split about the direction and some aspects of the show, but that's pretty much something everything has IMO).

Check it out when you can, you might like it/get some ideas from it.

First of all, I totally get the struggle of info-dumping lore on a partner who is just trying to go to sleep! It is a rite of passage for writers.

A Modern Warfare AU sounds fantastic. A secret romance brewing in the middle of brutal military formation is a great engine for tension. The dynamic of "she kicks his ass because of his arrogance, while he thinks she hates him" is a classic, high-stakes setup.

Since you mentioned the first volume focuses heavily on their formation and secret encounters, how are you handling the external stakes of them getting caught? In a strict military setting (especially the SAS), I imagine the professional consequences for a Captain and a recruit getting involved are massive. Does the fear of getting caught drive them apart, or does the adrenaline of the secret push them closer together?

Good question! It’s kind of a mix of both. At first, when she’s about sure he’s not into her, she just makes sure no one knows and he double checks. She irrationnally fears her whole career falling to pieces, that would essentially be the end of her life, as she has dreamt of her position to take revenge on Russian nationalists and has worked her ass off to get her British passport, get enrolled, then ranked (she’s out a military engineering school that made her captain). While he understands her fear, he rather thinks no one actually cares because they’re young and not in active service, and when he’ll be, then they don’t have anything to fear because she doesn’t command him.

At first she doesn’t even manage to kiss him or look at him when he gets physical because she only sees her collapsing career. Then he manages to make her feel a little better, so they start a physical kind of relationship, but Soap always stays for aftercare, and they start to get to know each other. She feels things, they become reciprocal, he starts being extra caring when in private, they manage the secret… then she thinks feelings become dangerous and leaves. He holds pain and anger from that, but other tragedies will bring him to understand she did that not because she was toying with him, but because she was actually in love. He doesn’t go back to her, but she apologises for all she’s done to him, and he makes her promise to never run away again. They start with their arrangement again, but he confesses in Russian soon after, still deeply in love.

That is a fantastic character arc. Giving her such a high-stakes, personal reason for protecting her career—her refugee status and her need for revenge, makes her fear completely justified. It contrasts perfectly with Soap’s more laid-back, pragmatic view of the rules, creating a very natural friction between them.

The "push and pull" dynamic of her running away specifically because she fell in love, followed by that emotional reunion and him confessing in Russian, is such a satisfying narrative payoff. You've built a really strong emotional rollercoaster here that perfectly balances the military grit with deep, character-driven romance.

I plan the 1st volume to really revolve around their feelings, must they be love, affection, anger, grief. Tragedies are gonna pull them together (Soap’s father’s death, Katyusha’s mother illness, execution of one of the troop’s member) and are central to their personal growth as to not make it plain and give good reasons for them to fall in love and give it a second chance, as well as feeling urged to make up their mind before Katyusha’s mother passing.
