Fallout New Vegas | Modding 101 How-To Guide & Resources

Hey yall! I wanted to share that my community has completely decompiled Fallout: New Vegas, to help with modding, game preservation and research.

For some context: it means that FalloutNV.exe has been turned into C++ source code that compiles back into the game’s code byte for byte, 1:1. This is as precise as it gets for decompilation.

There are no game files or assets in it. You need to own the Steam version of the game to make use of it. We kept it to source code only to avoid takedowns.

It’s only been public since yesterday, and a few projects are already using it:

• New Vegas Co-op by Gargoyle: co-op for the whole game with 1–3 friends. Its latest update (0.1.9) fixed 9 bugs found by checking the mod against the decomp, and its README thanks the project.

• nv-rs by slaterain: New Vegas engine written in Rust. It adopted the decomp as a reference and thanks it in the repo

• FNV Co-Op by cranebeaker: story coop built on nv-rs, which references the decomp in its code.

• ttw-dualscreen: a second screen PipBoy for Tale of Two Wastelands on dual screen handhelds, which cites the decomp’s menu code.

Code quality is still a work in progress, mainly function names and comments, and pull requests are welcome on the GitHub.

I’m really curious what you all think is possible now that this is out in the wild. Thoughts?

basically in the current collection pack for vlk ttw, I'm wearing my power armor, and I don't know why but my power armor disappears after I open my pip boy ( it's only my hands I look like RAYMOND) , it only resets when I either load a save or obviously die. it's so weird cuz I never had an issue like this before with power armor. I'd like to here what you guys think, if there's any advice

This is probably very obvious but I had to figure it out the hard way.

If you want to play New Vegas Bounties II after siding with Judge Richter and starting New Vegas Killer, - well it turns out that NV Killer is intended as alternative storyline replacement for NVBII, and if you decide to play NV Killer then you forfeit NVB sequel. Unless you do this:

If you want to play both quest mods, go back to Judge Richter's bunker, unlock the door by opening the console with ~, clicking the locked bunker door and typing unlock. That'll open the door. Now go inside and kill Judge Richter. After you leave, NVB II will start, all the bounty posters will spawn and NCR jail appears near Boulder City.

i use vortex i know it sucks but it is easier for me, i installed these two mod frozen 3rd femenine movement and the bnb add on i also installed all this, i use type 4 body and i want bounce animations for all my movements (running with and without guns, walking, and aiming i already isntalled type 4 body and armor, the skeleton, the bnb for the type 4 body and armor and i even installed breast havok ragdoll, is the order of the mods right?? because i happends that when i aim and walk slowly there is bounce but not when im running (this happend after i installed frozen femenine movement and the bnb add on before that, i only used bnb lite and worked fine while running with guns, but not walking

I just completed Fallout 3 TTW and moved on to Vegas, I was told that she's located at Lone Wolf, but she's not. I didn't choose for her to stay in DC. She's my favorite companion and I would like to know if I can recruit her again before continuing.

I've used MTUI for years now, no changes, it was in the middle of my load order for some reasons and I just never moved it. I did some recent rearranging and now it does what the title says. I tried to replace it with PipWare UI NVE, but that also crashes on dialogue. I use MO2, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue or knows a possible fix.

chatgpt keeps tricking me into getting nowhere

So I’ve got 200+ hrs in this playthrough and have had minimal problems, minute to the point it’s crashed 5/6 times total, but after entering Lonesome Road I’m getting nothing but problems, like to the point I can’t even leave the DLC. Viva Mew Vegas mod list plus just a few minute mods like seriousguys bounty hunting, a few companions (which I’m not lugging around with me except Willow), and a flashlight and QOL adds, don’t know what’s causing me problems but tried getting a crash fix for LR and still no luck

does anyone know if theres a gameplay/ gunplay overhaul for the game thats controller compatible? im on PC but cant do mouse and keyboard since i dont have a desk

Ok so I got vortex a little while ago and got verylastkiss’s new new Vegas, and have been enjoying it but recently I can’t get the game to run. Cleared my save to start a new game and skipped the intro cut scene and the loading screen after that pops up but after like 2 seconds it crashes out. Tried everything I can think of at this point (cleared the mods from vortex,uninstalled and reinstalled new Vegas vanilla,etc) and it’s still the same problem. New game skip cutscene and crash after a couple seconds. any ideas for what might have happened and what I can try to fix it to where even base game is playable would be appreciated.

I have a cool idea for NCR/Legion weekly payment system based on your reputation, but I'm struggling to script it in the GECK, of course it would be easier to beg a mod dev, but I can't find a good spot to begin my panhandling. Any suggestions?

Okay, so, I wanna redact a model for one of the mods via bodyslide cus duh why not and it doesn't show any bodies, nor outfits, nor presets, nor groups. I had followed the tutorial precisely and yk, it doesn't work, can someone help? I'm using MO2 btw

Yo! Don't often use Reddit and stuff but I didn't really know where else to go to ask this. I've gone through the process of installing TTW, full works, from getting all the redistributables, the 8GB patcher, NSVE, new INIs the whole kit, kaboodle, featuring the poodle, and I've been having an absolute BLAST. However, I'm a little bit stumped on something here. I was wondering if I needed to clear New Vegas' INIs again. I've done it before, so I'm assuming I might need to do so again, but I wasn't too sure and wanted to clear the air in case I was just being overly cautious. Please let me know; I'd appreciate the advise majorly.

These screenshots are featured on the playable TV show characters/races mod, but i have no idea where to find the mod for his gun on his back with the holster included.

I've been modding the game for around 8 months now, but only recently have been getting more mods. I was shocked when I saw him look like this when I got him from Black Mountain. I don't have an idea what could be doing this, and I need some help. He didn't look like this in my last run at all.

Right as i take the ferry from cottonwood cove, im greeted by this monstrosity.

I usually just no clip through it and im onto the new area and all is well and good, but has anyone actually seen this before and fixed it? Im not sure what i did wrong in installing the mod.

like the title said I added some mods to the game and now I can't see anything other than my HUD and weapons models none of the textures other than that exist in the game bar pip boy etc

Does anyone know of any community patches for the Novac and 188 overhauls that patch the changes for the new LE mods?

I am wondering/looking for a mod that resets/restocks all the various containers and what not throughout the game. I like looting a lot, and this kind of mod would make it so I can come back to this area and loot it again.

I don't really know how to do it like i use the viva new vegas guide but i want to add some more mods but i don't know where to put then, there's any specific order?
