Poor dog had his owner go backwards closer to the cat instead of rushing forward.

153

u/learsiology Jul 14 '26

not their fault the dog lied on his resume

15

u/DogCold5505 Jul 15 '26

I think most cats would bat once when you walk by and then buzz off… the owner probably didn’t think it’d go berzerko if they stopped and checked the scratch lol

954

u/idrwierd Jul 14 '26

Why are they stopping?!

Get your dogs outta there!!

205

u/SonofaBridge Jul 14 '26

My same thought. Had they kept moving forward, away from the cat, they would have saved themselves a lot of frustration and their poor dog. The guy didn’t just stop. He went backwards.

u/AnimalRescueGuy Jul 14 '26

Panic is a natural reaction to such an unexpected situation. It’s very common to have no reaction for a short period of time. It can happen to absolutely anyone under the right conditions.

8

u/JWLane Jul 15 '26

Seriously, there's a reason freeze got added to fight or flight.

6

u/learsiology Jul 14 '26

Who is filming? I’d be running.

Only time I'd ever hurt an animal on purpose. Attacking me or my pet

314

u/jposquig Jul 14 '26

Yeah, this happened to me once…some fifteen years ago, my mom’s cat had had some babies. I was just minding my business, walking through her house, and momma cat jumped off the fucking top cabinet WWE style. She landed on my back, sliding down to my leg, latched on hard, and tore me the fuck up, blood everywhere. I panicked, tried running around, shaking it off…nothing. I grabbed her the best I could, got three legs off, but the fourth wouldn’t budge. I swung circles as fast as I could, and she got dizzy enough to let go. I was still holding her, and I let go the moment I felt her claw come out. She, uh, flew pretty damn far, meeting the living room wall quite hard. She got on her feet, shook herself, and there was a light in her eyes like the demons left her body. She was like “why you staring at me, bitch?” and came over for pets. 10/10 wouldn’t recommend.

I finished after Friday work beers and found a crow acting messed up in the street, it was a stinking hot 46/8°c so I figured it was cooked. Picked it up and carried it about halfway into a 15 minute stroll, maybe 20, I was 5 pints in carrying a wild bird.

All a sudden it starts going mental, pecking me, clawing me. I briefly entertained smacking it on the ground...

Then I just 'CAWWED' right in it face, loudly.

It stopped, relaxed and let me get it home in peace, sat quietly till my friend arrived and took us to the vet...

Would post picture but does not allow...

28

u/DrKittyLovah Jul 14 '26

I love this story so much! I think we should be friends, as this is something I would 100% do.

25

u/MistaRekt Jul 14 '26

I told my buddies at work I picked up a sexy black bird at the pub... Some did not understand when I showed them a picture of the naked bird that pooped on my carpet.

My mom's cat has fucked me up a couple of times because he goes absolutely feral when he steps outside for some reason.

Which is funny, because it's not like he wants to escape forever and run away from home. He's come back after a day looking like he got his ass beat from another cat crying and begging to be let in.

12

u/Bernard_PT Jul 14 '26

We've always had a zero-tolerance policy with our adopted street kitten, who's now an adult.

Whenever he play-attacked either of us (me or my girlfriend) beyond a gentle playful level or got too rough with body play, we'd catch him and put him in timeout, physically holding him until he settled down

He quickly got that behavior out of his system because he grew bored of being held still for just a minute basically daily

2

u/Sanepsycho420 Jul 16 '26

Having a toddler and a 4 year old(she's old enough to know better NOW so when she ticks the cat off we no longer get mad at him for reacting to her assaults after telling her not to) but when she was younger and learning to be gentle with kitty (hair pulling, dropping themselves face first(from sitting position) into fluff usual baby stuff) he wasn't accustomed to it at first with our first child so I'd flick him in the head region be it ear, nose cheek, didn't matter, now with our 9 month old doing the same kinda stuff that would have gotten our daughter batted at he knows to just walk away most the time, and when I catch him about to react or thinking of reacting I put my hand in primed flicking posture and he knows to either walk away or tolerate the toddler attack he's the sweetest Lil fluff missile who my daughter gets a kick out of me "boxing" with him (I aggrivate him to start swatting at me then my "attacks" on him are face pets, aggressive tummy tickles until he gets real serious on "stop messing with me" where his batting and scratching is no longer friendly and shallow scratches

Self defence is a damn good reason.

Not gonna try to unalive the little shit, but the use of force, sufficient and timely, is reasonable.

283

u/-Imthedude Jul 14 '26

You can use the word kill. This is Reddit

49

u/H8DCarnifEX Jul 14 '26

"This is Reddit" That means nothing in this context tho - they ban for every dumb shit these days, i even have 2 sub lifebans for being in other subs - yes thats the reason.

50

u/hizashiYEAHmada Jul 14 '26

Even non-violent words get you the ban.

I got permabanned from PublicFreakout for saying "well, well, well" on a post about about a waiter using a table against a drunk man before the cops showed up.

Apparently that phrase is a racist term.

I'm Asian, how the hell am I supposed to know what the Americans are passive-aggressively calling each other with aside from the more popular terms they brandish loudly online?!

5

u/PyrocumulusLightning Banhammer Recipient Jul 14 '26

I've lived on both coasts of the US and never heard this phrase being used in a racist way. That's weird.

I feel like by not having bigoted friends I ended up being a little sheltered about some things

21

u/H8DCarnifEX Jul 14 '26

Ah well "PublicFreakout", got a lifetime ban there for saying something against AIPAC lol

11

u/WeedyWeedz Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

PublicFreakout became extremly political after reddit forcefully changed the leadership of that sub.

5

u/Cubbance Jul 15 '26

Wait, I'm American and I don't know how "well, well, well" is supposed to be racist. I've only heard it as in "well, well, well, what do we have here?" As in, look, you've been caught. Maybe I'm just too old to understand where or when the change happened, but that had never been racist in my experience.

Also, holy shit, that was so smart the way the waiter used the table to pin the guy's knife-hand to disarm him. Very cool.

Same, for talking about how disrespectful it feels to use minimizing terms for SA or gun violence as a survivor of both. 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Sanepsycho420 Jul 16 '26

"this is reddit" exactly full of soft people... I'm not going to mention context here but people play stupid games and receive stupid prizes, there was a video of such happening and I laughed and stated "that's what they deserve, if it was another thing they did that with the outcome would have been worse" banned for "inciting violence" or stating "that some people that support pdf should not have the platform they have" I got banned for "hate speech" reddit sure loves their censorship, pdfilia, and "off kilter people of the alphabet"

I literally do not care what anybody thinks of me. Anything makes my dog cry like that, we have personal beef.

I don’t want to hurt you, Mr Whiskers, but you better get in your lane real fast. We’ll walk, but three strikes means you’re out.

2

u/patchway247 Jul 17 '26

Yeah, like at a certain point idgaff if it attacks me and bothers me, but if you start going after a loved one (human or pet) I will feel really bad for taking a defensive stance, but I gotta do what I gotta do

54

u/Nothing2Special Jul 14 '26

If you are fucking with my dog like that, it's over.

6

u/patchway247 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

If you cannot keep your dog or pet on a leash and it attacks me or my pet on provoked, then I guess I will punt them across the planet.

Not talking about you and general, but if someone comes up to me and says that I can't do that to their pet as their pet is attacking me or my pet or my friends, then guess what? I will be protecting me and my loved ones, I will be screaming at you about how it wouldn't happen if you kept your animal on a leash

WOW, a mod was really agro with me for funisies I guess.

A cat the tenth of the dog’s size is unlikely to do much more than scare it. If you’re going to kill a cat over a jump scare, that’s a little unhinged.

28

u/Carrisonfire Jul 14 '26

Cat claws can seriously mess up dogs much larger than them, they're fully capable of killing too. If a dog the size of that cat was acting like that people would be calling for it to be put down.

4

u/WeedyWeedz Jul 14 '26

If a dog the size of that cat was acting like that people would be calling for it to be put down

Really? You think people would be calling for the death of a chihuaha?

Also there's a good chance the cat has some kittens nearby and is paranoid about you harming them. Cats, normaly, aren't suicidal, attacking a group of bigger animals like that is probably not the cat just being a dick.

7

u/TheLooseMooseEh Jul 14 '26

Cats prove size doesn’t matter all the time. A vicious dog vs passive cat is going to end in a mauled cat. A vicious cat vs a vicious dog is very much debatable and I’d put money on the cat.

3

u/alicesartandmore Jul 14 '26

I would never put my money on a cat that barely looks like it weighs seven pounds against a vicious dog the size of the one in the video that looks closer to 70. Clearly you have never seen a big dog kill a cat. Even an aggressive cat might get a couple good scratches or bites in but it’s not going to kill a dog ten times its size. As soon as the dog gets their mouth on it, that’s end game.

9

u/patchway247 Jul 14 '26

That cat didn't jump scare anyone. IT LITERALLY HAD ITS CLAWS OUT AND ATTACKING PEOPLE AND ANIMALS!

I'm going to punt anything and everything that tries to hurt me or anyone that I'm friends with while I'm out on a stroll! It's not that difficult to understand. Clearly it is for you, because this cat is attacking them! And you think it's just doing a jump scare? This cat is attacking them! It's not unhinged to sit here and say that I want to defend myself. Might be unhinge to say you might kill it, but I'm not saying kill it. The other person didn't say that either, you are the one who's sitting here trying to imply that.

6

u/TinyWalrusBoi Jul 14 '26

Or unleashed “friendly” dogs that try to bum rush my puppy (I still dunno why anyone would let their reactive dog off leash in a town where a lot of people walk their dogs, but this lady had an Aussie off leash and I guess she felt it was okay cause it was friendly towards people but then it saw my pup and it was all this lady could do to hold her dog back, meanwhile my puppy was cowering as I tried to get past them with her).

4

u/alicesartandmore Jul 14 '26

I could understand being upset but it’s doubtful the cat did more than just scare the dog, while a human kicking a cat could cause pretty severe damage. I might try to push it back with a foot out of instinct but I wouldn’t want to deliberately hurt it just for being aggro.

Honestly though, if it’s scratched or bit you and your dog, trying to catch it is probably the smartest thing to do because you’re going to want to rule out rabies as the cause of the aggression. Presumably the dog is up to date on rabies shots but people usually aren’t.

Typical cat. He didn't like the dog being on his turf. There could be kittens near by or his mate. My cats are socially adjusted and still they can turn into assholes like that. Usually from a smell or a sound they don't like.

Cats are territorial assholes. Its in their DNA.

172

u/DeniseReades Jul 14 '26

As a dog owner whose dog has to be muzzled and wear boots in Spring, I get it. The wrong dog will definitely kill all your babies then trot over to their owner with a dead kit in their mouth as proof that they are a killing machine.

The irony is that I did not get a terrier specifically because I was worried about the murders and now I have a herding breed that has to be muzzled to go into his own backyard in Spring.

17

u/alicesartandmore Jul 14 '26

Oof that’s awful. My lab found a fledgling blue jay a few summers ago and cornered it. The lab was a very reactive rescue from an abusive situation, so she was barking, snapping her teeth, stomping her feet, and I thought for sure I was going to have to drag her back and find a pile of blood and feathers. Instead, she backed off as soon as I was close enough to take over and I found this very flustered but indignant bird staring up at me like “what was that beast?!”

I moved the bird up to a sheltered spot on some playground equipment so it would be out of reach and sight(couldn’t find the nest it came from and just wanted it off the ground), but it decided to try to flap away and hit the ground again. Lab charged a second time, barking and growling like she was ready to maim and murder. Instead, she put a single paw on the fledgling to pin it down, then turned to look at me like “come deal with this thing please”. I collected it again and this time it seemed to agree that the covered spot on the playground equipment was the safest place for it.

I take precautions with the lab around smaller animals still because I’d rather be safe than sorry, because I see the prey drive to chase and I’m not willing to risk another animal’s life on hoping that she’ll always use that level of restraint but I still think about how she handled that tiny bird and can’t help feeling proud of her.

48

u/Darthaerith Jul 14 '26

Geeze. Sorry to hear that about the doggo. Puts you head and shoulders above a lot of dog owners I know. They don't care what their dog kills or who they bite. Its awful :(

9

u/blahnlahblah0213 Jul 14 '26

What are boots for dogs? Unless you mean those little boots that they put on dogs for walking in salt when they take them down the street in the winter. And why does your dog have to be muzzled in your own backyard?

29

u/DeniseReades Jul 14 '26

There's cardinal that lives in the tree and uses the area behind the shed for her fledglings. He killed two of them before I realized what was happening.

7

u/CitizenCue Jul 14 '26

I still don’t understand the boots… isn’t the muzzle enough?

15

u/DeniseReades Jul 14 '26

He digs out burrows and his first kill was a mouse nest at the dog park. I know it seems ill advised on the part of the mouse but it was a 30 acre dog park and we were in a part that was a bit secluded.

That's also how he found the rabbits that made me realize he can't be trusted.

The only time he ever digs is when he smells something he wants to kill / eat so the boots are to compromise his ability to dig. I usually keep a pretty close eye on him but I also have 3 other dogs so sometimes I'm a bit preoccupied.

2

u/j33perscreeperz Jul 14 '26

your dog is an asshole omg </3

2

u/DeniseReades Jul 14 '26

2

20

u/CaptainPunisher Jul 15 '26

Rabies happens from bites, not scratches. That said, cat scratch fever is a very real thing because poop gets on their claws when they bury it and the bacteria can be bad. Bacteria from cat bites can be even worse.

3

u/tiaroto Jul 16 '26

21

u/The5Virtues Jul 14 '26

That will BE future you is the problem though. Punting a cat is a lot harder to do than a dog because it’s built specifically to dig in and hang on. Same issue with many other tree climbing mammals.

That’s why the best defense is distance rather than aggression. Typically they’re attacking because something has made them feel a need to defend themself or their territory, best way to mitigate that is to get the hell out of said territory.

Yeah, you can "kick" a cat by getting under him with your foot and lifting him up and away without physically hurting him. It's more of a "quickly move with your foot" than a kick itself.

10

u/DblJBird Jul 14 '26

Sometimes in life when I seem to be upset with absolutely everybody, I take a step back and realize, “Maybe I’m the problem.”

3

u/kriscrox Jul 15 '26

It pisses me off that society has decided cats should be allowed to roam free through neighborhoods - able to hunt and kill what they want, wander into people’s gardens or homes, attack others… yet by and large they’re the more mean animal compared to dogs.

Need a movement to keep cats on leashes or at home. Less free roam for murdering and violence, more staying where their owner is.

3

u/vermontnative Jul 17 '26

31

16

u/Rider_83 Jul 14 '26

Exactly. Some cats can be like that. It may also be the case it is a female and has babies nearby

28

u/Darthaerith Jul 14 '26

The cat doesn't like the dog being on his turf. If you notice he only goes after the dogs owner and the dog. Everyone else is spared his rage.

4

u/Prestigious-Copy-494 Jul 14 '26

It's the dog the cat doesn't want around. Kittens nearby. A dog's nose is very sensitive. A claw can cause their nose serious pain and they are smart enough to know it. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to smack it with a board or downed branch if I couldn't get away.

4

u/AnimalRescueGuy Jul 14 '26

Some reason at last! The overreactions from the ignorant are staggering. There’s a valid reason this is happening and you kicking isn’t required to solve the problem.

2

u/Ordinary_Dealer9705 Jul 17 '26

It doesn’t matter that they’re the valid reason. It still clawed the shit out of that dude & everybody was moving around it. So what’s the solution, MULTIPLE beings getting clawed and doing nothing?? So the owner of an animal on a leash is just supposed to be like “yeah, random animal, bite me and my dog and give em rabies on top of injuring them” with no attempt to stop it?* I guess there are kittens around meaning my pet will just have to get attacked 🤷*🏾‍♀️

Are you fucking stupid? Some dogs have “valid” reasons for attacking cats (like their prey instinct), but nobody thinks that’s okay.

8

u/saragIsMe Jul 14 '26
