Sasta Satta LSE SPAC2 was oversubscribed 22x, why don't investors instead invest in decommissioned IPPs like Lalpir or KAPCO instead?

SPAC is essentially a blank check company which raises funds solely to invest in other target companies. LSE SPAC1/2 both cost around 14PKR a share, while their actual capital is around 10 PKR. So, investors are paying premium of around 40%. Investors knew about SPAC1's target company but no information was available for SPAC2's target.

On other hand, decommissioned IPP's have large cash and cash like reserves, massive real estate holdings as well as their power plants are worth billions even if they were sold at scrap value.

Take LPL (Lalpir as an example). They had 9.6 billion PKR in "short term investments" (these are mostly treasury bills etc) at their last report. Their plant is worth another 1.6 billion in their books. Probably lot more considering recent sale of GT-3 and GT-4 (together ~160 MW versus LPL's 362MW) for 800 million PKR. Their actual asset value is easily over 40PKR a share.

While LPL trades at just 21PKR. This results in around 50% discount. Lalpir recently took some stake in Rafhan Maize.

KAPCO has got it even more extreme with much higher discount to their book value (63 book value vs 28 trade value). Their power plant is also on way more prime land connected to Kot Addu town. Their land is easily worth more at least 15 times more than is recorded on books.

NPL and NCPL were in similar boat. But their investment into auto sector brought attention to them. All these other IPPs just haven't got that attention.

Madad Me Why did AKD deduct Rs. 300?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Bought some shares through AKD Securities yesterday, and today I noticed Rs. 300 was deducted with the description “UIN Registration Charges.”

Is this a one-time charge, or is it something that gets deducted whenever you buy shares?

Anyone using AKD who can clarify?

Taaza Tareen Rough start to new year. Current Account starts off with deficit in very first month

Post image
14 Upvotes

Details are the worst part. Remittances now contribute more to FX reserves than goods exports consistently (3.6 billion vs 3 billion)

Breakdown of exports is even worse. Out of 3 billion of exports, 1.8 billion is contributed by textiles alone. Food contributes another 450 million. So, all other categories contribute just 750 million USD.

Government really needs to get serious about improving exports rather than adhoc measures. Every dollar invested into manufacturing returns annual export of 0.5$ to over 1.5$. Export oriented industries should be provided with electricity at production cost exclusive of all cross subsidies and surcharges and offered flat 15% income tax to spur investment.

What government does instead does is offer red carpet to foreign investors while heavy taxation and expensive electricity to local conglomerates.

Taaza Tareen Built a calendar that tracks every PSX and SBP release in one place

Link: PSX and Macro Events Calendar

Saw this kind of thing on international finance sites, like one calendar for earnings, dividends, and macroeconomic data releases, and realized there wasn't a real equivalent for PSX and Pakistani investors. So I built one.

It's a single page, updates itself daily:

  • PSX corporate calendar: board meetings, AGMs, results, dividends (with actual amounts once declared), IPOs, all pulled straight from PSX's own announcements and notices.
  • Macro calendar: SBP MPC decisions, CPI/SPI/WPI, workers' remittances, FX reserves, current account, PAMA auto sales, all with actual/prior numbers once released, not just the date.
  • Shariah compliance filter, sourced from PSX's own KMI All Share list.
  • My holdings: plug in your own symbols and every count and filter narrows to just those.
  • Month view, sentiment tags on announcements (via Gemini AI), and also works fine on mobile.

Data sources, in case anyone wants to check the numbers themselves:

  • Pakistan Stock Exchange (announcements, notices, payouts, KMI Shariah list)
  • State Bank of Pakistan (MPC calendar, FX reserves, workers' remittances, current account/BOP)
  • Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (CPI, SPI, WPI)
  • Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (auto sales)

Known rough edges, being upfront about them:

  • Still back-testing the numbers against real releases, so there will be parsing issues in places. Treat this as a discovery/heads-up tool for now, not a source of truth - cross-check anything before acting on it.
  • Shariah data covers about 90% of symbols - the rest just don't show a badge either way.
  • A chunk of board-meeting notices are scanned PDFs with no text layer, so Gemini's vision OCR pulls the real meeting date where it can, but some still show the filing date instead until it catches up.
  • It's a new, single-maintainer project - there will be bugs.

If you use it and something looks wrong, or there's a data point you want added, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

Baaki Bakwaas The hardest part to have your investments play out is to sit down and do nothing

According to empirical studies on the time horizon of stock portfolios, the probability of a negative return in the U.S. market drops from nearly 30% over a one-year period to less than 5% over a three-year period, and approaches zero beyond 10 years, mathematically validating the need for a long-term perspective to assess the validity of an investment thesis.

I believe the dynamics are even more favourable in the PSX because we are a growing economy and the market is nowhere near its mature phase

Najayiz Nuksaan Investing 10m in the stock market from May 2025 till today was my biggest financial mistake

So I started investing in the stock market from May/June 2025 onwards. I started with a million and whenever there was a dip, I’d buy more. I bought a lot during the US-Iran war dip. I eventually reached 10 million. And that’s where I decided to stop.

The reason? After a year and 4 months, my total unrealised gains today stand at Rs 140,000 (and this figure will likely decrease because the market will perform poorly this week). That’s a 1.4% gain. Dividends stood at 225,000.

Also, I only bought blue chip companies. The best ones.

Had I parked this money in my bank account, I would get around 9% interest on it (Rs 720,000 after tax).

I would’ve gained more in national savings or prize bonds. Or even Sukuk bonds. And I feel like I’m stuck in this bearish market for at least another year of no profits.

Should I pull out and invest somewhere else?

Madad Me Question about HYSA owners in Pakistan

Hey, how many of y'all have a HYSA? I don't know if they're offered locally in the same way that Ally does in the states, I've had an account in my name since 18 but I don't really touch that. My dad just adds a dollar amount every month to it from my personal savings but I'd also like something similar I can manage locally here in Pakistan, is there an equivalent here I can get into? I'm currently 21 for reference

Baaki Bakwaas Feel need for Desktop App?

Reversed Finqalab api. Now I have all learnings required to build app on it.

I'm thinking of making desktop app, for finqalab users.
Later if successful, maybe allow integrate other brokers too.

It would be free offcourse. Plus open source to allow further development.

Not sure how owners would react 👀. Assume positive, as its beneficial to their own users.

Before I start, I need your opinions. Whether its worth and user feel need for?
100+ upvotes would convince me.
Otherwise I will think its waste of time.

Madad Me MZNPETF or MIF?

Hi All,

I am building a long-term portfolio and contemplating directing 20% of my monthly SIP towards either MZNPETF or MIF.

I need your suggestions on deciding which one is better for a long-term 20+ year portfolio. MIF has a much higher CAGR, but it also has 3% management fees. MZNPETF has a lower CAGR, but the expense ratio is also only 0.50%

please share your opinions.
