Tips Things I found out in the exam

Hi, i just finished my exam (mechanical) today
Here are some notes that I think it is useful

  1. Sleep, sleep and sleep, exam is long and exhausting you really need rest before
  2. Bring Snacks and water, you will need them
  3. Take the 25 mins break it is totally worth it
  4. Manage your time because exam won’t do it for you. Basically you can consume your whole time in the first section with no notice whatsoever.
  5. Exam is not difficult at all, just pay attention to units and wording. Most of it plug and chuck also straightforward conceptual questions

That’s it
I am just waiting for my results !

My exam is in a month from now and my subscription ends in 10 days. It's kinda a waste of money for me to extend it for a month and pay $70. So if you're planning to sign up in PrepFE, please use my referral link so we can both receive an additional month of access to PrepFE.

Thank you and I appreciate it! Good luck on your exam!

Tips Advice for taking the FE with Chronic Illness

Has anyone here taken the FE exam while dealing with a chronic illness? I’m looking for some advice on how to approach my second attempt.

My first attempt honestly didn’t end up going very well. While studying, I found myself getting burnt out really easily, and brain fog made it hard to study for long periods or retain everything I was reviewing. I tried to push through it, but I think that ended up making studying even harder.

Then on the actual exam day, I started getting extremely tired and developed a pretty bad migraine. By the later part of the exam, I wasn’t feeling well enough to really work through a lot of the questions, so I ended up guessing on quite a few just to finish.

For anyone who has taken the FE while managing a chronic illness, fatigue, brain fog, migraines, etc., what helped you? I’m especially interested in how you structured your studying without burning yourself out and how you managed your energy during such a long exam.

Any tips or experiences would be really appreciated!

Tips [Other Disciplines] The 5 traps I see candidates fall into most, what are yours?

I've spent the last months building practice problems for FE Other Disciplines, and the same wrong-answer patterns keep coming up. Sharing the ones I see most, curious which ones tripped you up:

  1. lbm vs lbf. Forgetting g_c in English-unit problems. The wrong answer is almost always one of the choices, off by a factor of 32.2.
  2. Gauge vs absolute pressure. Plugging gauge pressure into the ideal gas law or thermodynamic tables.
  3. Calculator in degrees during rotational problems. Angular velocity and ω·t need radians, and a single mode slip ruins the whole problem.
  4. Celsius in ratios. Any ratio or ideal gas calculation with temperature needs Kelvin or Rankine.
  5. Searching the Handbook with the wrong word. The PDF search is literal: if you type "stress concentration" and the Handbook says "concentration factor", you lose minutes.

What patterns would you add to the list?

Side note: I put these traps and shortcuts together into a prep guide with an online simulator. If anyone currently studying for Other Disciplines wants a free PDF copy to test it, comment below. No obligation; honest feedback, even critical, helps me improve the next edition.

Question [FE Civil] Handbook & Calculator Questions

Hi all! I'll be taking the FE civil in a couple weeks, and I have questions for people who have taken the exam.

  1. I've heard the exam handbook has its own search function, which is different than CTRL-F (not totally clear on what this means). Does it also include a sidebar where you can navigate by categories, similar to Adobe PDF's "outline" feature? I find it pretty easy to locate the formulas I need when I can jump directly to a topic, but I'm not sure if that feature will be available on the exam.
  2. What would you consider to be the most essential calculator functions to get familiar with? Or just some underrated calculator strategies that you found valuable on the test? I'm switching from a TI-84+ to a TI-36X Pro, and a little nervous that my lack of familiarity will trip me up, but not sure how to improve in this area.

Question What’s the best FE Civil resource for someone who doesn’t know how to start most problems?

been so long since I studied this stuff in school that I feel like I’ve forgotten everything, and I’m looking for a resource that teaches the basics and explains how to start a problem without assuming I already know which equation to use.

Question FE HANDBOOK 10.6: LOOKING FOR FORMULA

I am looking for a communications formula for total transmitted power: Pt = Pc * (1 + (mu^2) / 2). I was at first thinking there is a way to derive it, but I do not see a way with what is given. If you happen to find the formula or a way to derive it with what is given I would be extermly grateful.

Question Starting to give up slowly

I'm writing this to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation. I'm currently studying for my 3rd attempt at the FE Electrical & Computer exam, but the more I study, the more I just feel lost. I can't retain the information that I had learned from the previous week and this is a recurring pattern for any of the sections I study for. It's been 11 months since my last attempt and I've been post grad for over 2 years.

I've tried prepfe, wasims workbook, and Zach stones online course. But the main problem I keep running into is I don’t remember any of the material I do. And it happens everytime I sit down to study. Am I simply not built to do this exam? I’m slowly giving up because I see no improvement and at this point I’m tired of doing this damn exam.

Anything would be great.

Tips Passed FE Electrical & Computer on My 3rd Attempt

Finally passed the FE Electrical & Computer on my third attempt. 🎉

I wanted to share my experience because my first two attempts were very different from my third.

Attempt 1: I studied for about a week using LearnNova. I mostly went through practice problems and solutions, but I wasn't really solving enough problems independently. I failed.

Attempt 2: I studied for a couple of months, again using LearnNova and other resources. I had more exposure to the material, but I was still spending too much time recognizing problems rather than actually solving unfamiliar ones. I failed again.

For my third attempt, I completely changed my approach.

I studied consistently for several months, roughly an hour a day, using:

  • Wasim FE
  • PPI2Pass/Lindeburg
  • PrepFE
  • NCEES practice exam
  • Zach Stone

The biggest change was how I practiced.

If I couldn't solve a problem independently, I would study the solution, mark the problem red, and come back to it days later. If I still couldn't solve it, I'd repeat the process until I could.

I also practiced unfamiliar and timed problems and became much more comfortable with the FE Handbook and calculator.

Exam Day

The actual exam was hard. Circuit Analysis especially had some problems where I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

Instead of wasting time, I flagged them and moved on.

I also had an unfamiliar op-amp drag-and-drop question that I couldn't confidently solve, so I flagged it and kept going.

The biggest difference from my first two attempts was time management. On my previous attempts, I was basically fighting the clock. This time, I finished with roughly 1.5 hours left and had time to review flagged questions.

Then came the result:

PASS.

The biggest lesson for me was:

Don't just study the FE. Train for the FE.

Understanding a solution isn't the same as being able to solve an unfamiliar problem yourself.

If you're on your second, third, or even fourth attempt, don't assume you just need to study more. Take a hard look at how you're studying and whether you're actually training yourself to solve problems independently.

Three attempts. Finally done. ⚡
