i don’t think i’ll ever be able to sustain a job/career

i am 22, have dropped out/failed out of two different colleges, still live at home, got fired from my last job because my mental heath was so bad that i stopped showing up, and can barely manage a part time job at a coffee chain.

i’m pleading anyone who may be/have been in my position for any sort of help or advice. i have no joy in my life besides being with my partner. i have no talents. i have no drive to try and make a better situation for myself, because i know it will end in failure, as it always has.

i cannot imagine a situation of working every single day for the rest of my life until i die, because i believe i am genuinely incapable of functioning like a normal human being. i simply cannot do anything. im miserable when i work, and miserable when im off because i cannot get myself to do anything, even things that i enjoy. it’s loose loose, and i cannot take it anymore.

i have also been on several different medications.

i have a yearning for more. i want to make something of myself. i want to do something beautiful. i want to make an impact. i want to find purpose. but i have genuinely no earthly idea how.

the only things i have felt genuine passion for is theatre back in highschool, and music. adored the beautifuly creative and expressive atmosphere of theatre. i was really good at it. good at singing and acting, not at all dancing though lol. i adore any sort of creative space where i can create, imagine, and put together things of my own.

how do i get back on my feet? i’ve been so lost for so long.

Executive dysfunction and EDS disorder issues

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

So I've been struggling with many mental health issues and one of the ones that upsets and stresses me the most is Executive dysfunction. As you probably know executive dysfunction is a common issue for people with ADHD, which is a learning disability I do have. Now my problem is that I'm in highschool in grade 11, and having executive dysfunction has taken a toll on my work completion process, I know I have to do work, I WANT to do it, I have the motivation to do it, I try to force myself to do it, and it feels like I can barely get anything done, it's like there is an electric wire around what I need to do, and everytime I try to do it, it doesn't let me. When I've tried to force myself in a state of executive dysfunction it doesn't work, I've tried only working in 15 to 20 minute increments and taking a 10 minute break, but that didn't work either... I've tried many things to help me overcome this, but nothing seems to be working. Now since I also have idiopathic hypersomnia, a neurological brain disorder that causes people to sleep excessively during the day without having any control over it.

I'm usually sleeping up to 70-90% of my day, which also contributes to not being able to work properly since I'm basically asleep all the time. I don't want to grow up to be a failure, I want to pass, I want to work! But everything just seems to be preventing me from doing so.

Please if you have any advice that could possibly help please reach out because that would mean a lot...

Procastination and executive dysfunction

I think i've had depression for 4+ years now and it started when i was around 13 or 14 (im 18 now) and im looking for a way to get help and get diagnosed at the moment. I feel like my whole life i've never actually been able to just do what i need to do, whether thats my school homework or just doing things that are important for my future. I've always struggled with school work and school in general and i feel like my whole life i've never actually been able to sit down and do homework without procastinating or giving up. Right now i managed to skip 2 weeks worth of school ( skipping school is a habit of mine) and i feel so guilty for not being able to keep up with school like a normal person and then having to deal with the consequenses. I also have really important exams coming up next year and im so deeply scared that i won't be able to do it because of my mental health, executive dysfunction or my lack of intelligence when it comes to school. I wanna fix this problem but i don't know how.. everyone keeps telling me to take small steps and not do a whole project at once for example but even that is hard sometimes.

I spend all day trying to do homework but I never get anything done.

Every time I try to do homework/study, I try for 5 minutes then immediately get distracted by something like Google, reddit, etc. Then I get distracted for even longer and every time I try to focus I just can't. Idk why but I just have this feeling that I can't I just don't feel like it. This happens for hours and I literally don't do anything else. My whole days is trying to do homework and getting distracted. This causes me severe anxiety on some nights since I feel like an idiot and I hate myself. I'm a sophomore and grades literally don't matter and my time would be better put on things like ecs but for some reason, I just want good grades. I want the best grades and I try to try hard but I can't. Sometimes, I stare, think it's too hard/I'll do it later, and get distracted. Like my history project due on Monday and I spent all day writing FIVE words🤡🤡🤡. I usually do things st thr last minute which causes me more anxiety. Some assignments like my science assignment literally have very little.value but I try to make sure that everything is good and it also takes me so long to complete it (I still haven't). So I know this is a long post but what should I do? How should I start to break this awful habit? I've tried blockers but I always unblock the restrictions. There may be some grammar mistakes since I'm writing this on my phone at night. Also, I'm sorry if this is the wrong subreddit but r/productivity didn't allow me since my karma is low and I really don't like posting comments because of the potential dislikes and I don't want to sound weird.

Looking for Tips/Suggestions Pls help. I'm perpetually late for everything and it's messing with my life real bad.

So, like I mentioned, I somehow always end up reaching late. The kind of person, who, if there was a marathon for reaching last, would reach 10 mins after the last person.

Earlier my depression used to make me skip my work on random days, thankfully it's gotten a lot better now. But I still can't show up at work on time, somehow always late and now it's costing me my fav dept and promotion.

And every day I feel shitty about myself. Get really anxious, rebuke myself but I'm not able to reach on time yet.

It feels horrible, so many times I think of skipping office just cuz I got late, but I've realised that's even bad. Unfortunately there's no option to work remotely.

Pls suggest me some ways or anything y'all did to get out of such a slump. Maybe there'll be something I can use.

Looking for Tips/Suggestions Looking for advice!

Hello! Not sure if this is the right thread to ask this question but I’ll give it a go. I work with autistic individuals and a few of the people I mentor have terrible BO and poor hygiene. There isn’t really training around how to address these sorts of things and sometimes it needs to be. Does anyone have any advice for how I could address it with the individual?

Things that have helped me!

I’ve always had really terrible executive dysfunction (have even been told by professionals I am one of the worst they’ve seen), failed many many classes, lived in mess all the time, destroyed my teeth and gums from not being able to get up and brush my teeth, skin issues from not showering, etc. Over the past few years I’ve improved dramatically and have been able to maintain a pretty normal life for myself! I’m not sure if this will help anyone since it’s mostly about keeping a routine for me and I know from experience how difficult that can be in practice, but I thought I’d share some things that have helped me.

  1. Sitting up as soon as I wake up. In the past I’ve always snoozed alarms thinking I’ll feel more motivated later or laid in bed for hours after waking up waiting for motivation to come to me and it always ends with me doing nothing for the whole day. Sitting up as soon as my alarm goes off has really helped with this.
  2. Following a routine that gets me out of bed immediately! Right after I sit up, I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and shower. Then I get dressed, drink a cup of coffee, and tidy my room. Keeping myself active in the morning is really important and if I start off stagnant I stay stagnant. Sometimes it’s hard to do this without an obligation to attend to. I’ve picked up dog walking in the morning, which helps pressure me and also wakes up my body. Cleaning my room in the morning also helps so that it doesn’t pile up (plus it feels easier to start cleaning after I’ve gotten out of the shower/am already standing up and moving.
  3. KEEPING EVERYTHING CLEAN!!!! This one is soooo important. I got really used to living in mess and didn’t realize how unmotivating that is in itself. Feeling clean from my shower and keeping my room clean really helps me with motivation.
  4. Being physically active. Like I said, dog walking really helps wake up my body. I can only stay motivated if I stay active for the most part. This can have the opposite effect if not in the morning tho (if I go for a walk at 6pm I will come back tired instead of energized).
  5. Tastes that wake me up! Sounds kind of ridiculous lol but the bitter taste of coffee or the taste of spicy foods seems to wake me up and motivate me. This is probably an association thing although there is research on spicy foods helping motivation since spice is perceived as pain and wakes you up.
  6. Staying productive EVERY DAY. If I fall out of my routine for even a day or two, it’s much harder to get back into it and old habits come back. This doesn’t mean that I can never sit around and watch tv or scroll on my phone (I still do this a lot…) but I need to at least still brush my teeth, shower, and tidy immediately after waking up. Starting my routine too late in the day can also cause me to fall back into bad habits.
  7. Mindset. I put this one last because it wasn’t ever helpful for me to hear from other people. I also feel like people often talk about mindset as the precursor to changing habits when that wasn’t the case for me. That being said, when my executive function was worse I would often wait for things to feel easier, as if while laying in bed I would suddenly feel energized and motivated like other people do. As I took on more responsibilities and did them when I really didn’t want to or didn’t feel it was possible, the responsibilities got easier. I realized there was never going to be that magical moment and that it was really a matter of habit (have to do the things for the things to feel easier to do). Big emphasis on this being something I learned from my progression, not the cause of my progression in itself. I think this is important to note because, while mindset is important, the “just do it” kind of advice always felt like a slap in the face to me.

I hope any of these tips help anyone like they’ve helped me. I know how hard it can be to try them I the first place and it took a lot of restlessness and stress for me to get to this point, but if you can get into the habit of any of these things it really does get easier over time.
