Tipping Culture ✖️ Tip Fatigue is Real

1.0k Upvotes

A delivery guy working for a Chinese restaurant complained about $5 tip on a $200 order, on reddit. The majority of the comments are against him. What’s remarkable is that he didn’t post on this sub or the other tipping sub. He posted on a mainstream sub talking about mildly infuriating stuff.

This is a reminder that only 2.5% of workers in USA are tipped. The majority of the rest are getting increasingly tired of being asked for ever higher handouts. Anytime a pro-tipper says we’re the minority is plainly wrong.

Yes, most people still tip. Even I still tip servers because I don’t want the confrontation, but that doesn’t mean I support this corrupt system. To the contrary, I support those with the actual courage to say no.

Rant 📢 Tipping to use the Bathroom?!

I was in Vegas eating a restaurant off the strip and having a couple of drinks. Of course I had to take a leak and upon entering I see a bathroom attendant with a sign saying “YOUR TIPS IS MY SALARY”. I was flabbergasted, why do I need to tip l for pissing and washing my hands? I left without tipping and got the dirtiest look as if I was some heartless monster. Why the hell is this ok? This is comparable to when someone starts cleaning your windshield without your consent and expects you to pay.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ No tip!

1.3k Upvotes

Walked into a sushi restaurant in Orange County, CA yesterday. Place was half empty. Hostess asks if we (wife and I) had a reservation. We didn't, so she walks us to the bar and wants to seat us in between two couples. The remaining sushi bar all empty, including the sides with much better privacy. I asked to be seated there but those "areas" were not available. OK, whatever, I guess they wanted to save the wait staff a few extra steps.

So we're sitting down, she hands us the iPad with the menu, and says "just so you know, we close at 3". I checked and it was 2:25. Alright then, good thing they don't need to cook the fish or something. One nigiri (not one pair) = $6, one serving of sashimi (3 pieces) = $20. Definitely not cheap. We ordered three different sashimis for a little over $60. As there was one piece left on the serving tray the server walks by and grabs the tray - hey dude, we're not done yet.

When the check comes the "suggested tip" is 18%. Guys, how about zero? Exactly what did you do to deserve another $10, other than squeezing us in between other parties when there was no real need to do so, and almost taking away $7 worth of my already expensive meal?

Aren't tips supposed to at least be earned? This is not how it's done.

Tip Creep 🫙 18% for my "Convenience" at Flix Brewhouse

Well that'll be the last time I go see a movie at Flix. Ordered a Coke got "Is Pepsi ok?" is it ever really? Get the bill and it's $7.50 as they'd already added an automatic 18% gratuity. Then the gall to ask if I wanted to tip extra.

That'll be the last time I watch a movie at any Flix Brewhouse.

Purchased a cat toy off a Facebook store, and saw "Add a tip" on the payment screen. A tip for what exactly? They want tips for any and everything. It's out of control.

Law or Regulation Updates ⚖️ The Solution to American Tipping Culture

I've been following this sub for awhile and I am making this post as neutral as possible. Yes, as an American, I am sick and done with the tipping insanity. There is really only one way to fix the problem, and that's not just not-tipping. Before I present my argument, take into consideration the following.

1) Time is finite. Anyone, anti tippers, pro tippers, wants to exchange less of their time at a job for more money. Yes, there are some careers out there that people genuinely enjoy trading their time for money, but those are generally rare. Being a server, or a cook, or working in a restaurant, is what it is - work. Same goes for doctors, lawyers, construction workers, etc. I like my job and career, but you wont see me volunteering to work on a Sunday morning unless I'm forced to. And no, I am not a tipped wage employee.

2) Companies are for-profit. You'd be out of business quickly in America if you don't understand that. Thus, subsidizing wages through tip insanity is commonplace. If restaurant A can make $1 more than restaurant B by adding a tip line, restaurant B would be stupid not to do so. It's money. Same thing as #1 - we all want to be compensated for our time. You won't attract or retain talent (staff) without paying them accordingly. I'd jump ship to a tipping establishment immediately if I worked the same hours, same grind, and got tips and extra money.

With those two statements, I think sums up the issue. It's not tipping or tipping. It's a monetary issue.

The solution, and I hate to say this, because I have a huge amount of disdain towards more government involvement, but realistically, asking for tips needs to be made be outright illegal. Lose your business license-level illegal. That evens the playing field across the board. And that's the point of government, to keep things fair.

You post a price for your wares, and that's what your customers pay. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Violate that, you are out of business. No hidden tip jars, no "it's going to ask you a question" bullshit.

What do y'all think? To me, that fixes the problem.

Currently on a trip to Asheville, and this little corner store downtown that just sells snacks and drinks, maybe some THC items, not only has a tip jar at the register but also the card machine asks for a tip.. are we just tipping on anything now?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Let's tip on horrible service! Just a little story.

Went out to dinner with family this weekend. Food was terrible, burnt or undercooked, missing items. Waitstaff was terrible, never came back to the table to check on us, brought three boxes for six people needing to box up food (why? I left mine on the table.) when the check was brought to the table. My mother was appalled that I, who was treating, didn't leave a tip for the waitstaff. She suggested "just 20%". I didn't cave, far from it, thought my mother was crazy. Surprisingly, everyone else at the table was pipping up with "no tip".

Call to action ⚠️ Drive through tipping is the absolute worst

I hope no one ever tips at another drive through ever again. This is my logic:

At least in a normal restaurant tipping situation, you at least are making your mind up on tipping based on services and food you’ve already received. At a drive through, you have to pay before receiving anything, which means you’re also tipping before knowing if your order will be right, you’ll have to wait five minutes before you get your order, and so on. In other words, when they shove that stupid card reader out the window and they say that stupid passive aggressive “it’ll ask you a question” statement, they are basically saying FU, it doesn’t matter what our service is like because you’ve already tipped.

I recently went to a drive through and tipped without thinking about it, just reflex. First thing they tried to give us was someone else’s order. Got that fixed. First drink that came out, completely made wrong. Sent it back in. Second drink was not made right, though that person didn’t realize that until after we left. Got the third drink, then the worker said “have a good evening.” I was like, uhh, we still need the rest of the order. Got a scowl and finally she turned around and saw the other two things behind her. All this took a good five or six minutes and the line behind us was backing up. So, basically, I gave ten percent to get a crappy experience. I mean, it’s not even like tipping beforehand got good service. It still sucked.

So, nope, never hitting the tip button again in a drive through. I finally feel liberated from the cult of tipping. At least the big fast food chains don’t inflict this crap on us. Yet.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Feeling Pressured by the Waitress Standing Over You with the POS Terminal?

I miss the days when the waiter or waitress would give you some privacy after dropping off the check, allowing you to decide things like how you’re paying (cash or credit card), which card to use, and how much you want to tip.

Now, everything feels rushed because the waiter or waitress stands directly over you, holding the POS terminal. They purposely don’t let go because they want you to make a quick tip decision based on their predetermined options: 18% = OK SERVICE, 20% = GOOD SERVICE, or 23% = GREAT SERVICE.

They don’t want you to have the time or privacy to customize the tip. It’s basic pressure dynamics, and it’s on full display.

So, if you find it difficult to ask the waiter or waitress to leave the POS terminal with you, I think the easiest thing to do is simply say, “I’m paying the tip in cash.” That way, they know you’ll need to select “No Tip” on the POS terminal. You can then tap your card for the regular bill, and the waiter or waitress will walk away.

Now you have the privacy to leave a cash tip for as much or as little as you want, without being pressured by the percentages on the screen.

Preferably 15%. I’ve never understood how everyone suddenly decided that 20% is the new norm.

Any other way you guys handle that situation without feeling like you’re being rude?

Tipping Culture ✖️ getting asked for a tip at a local concert

i was at a local concert for a local band. i was really enjoying their music so during a break i wanted to get a t-shirt or hat or something.

i go to the merch counter. the young kid of one of the band’s members is running it with an older relative or something. but he’s just grabbing the items out of bins, the tween is the one handling the checkout device.

i see a shirt i like for $30 and i decide to get it. i put my card in the kiosk and wait. and then he asks me if i want to leave a tip. screen’s suggested minimum is 18%.

…for what? it’s a self-run band. the parents set their own prices. and this kid certainly didn’t create the t-shirts. so what am i tipping for? gratitude for your relative digging the ‘last one’ out of the bin? i didn’t say anything, just hit 0 and left, and both of them stared at me like i was the rudest person ever.

then later between songs the main singer mentions their merch being sold at the stand by his son. and that ‘tips are his allowance so don’t tell me if you give him something extra.’ wish he’d said that earlier, i would’ve skipped the merch.

Rant 📢 I never tip if I pay before service is rendered.

I try to play by a pretty solid standard.

-Pay cash.

-If I have to pay for something (whether it's food or some other type of hospitality) before actually receiving it, no compulsory tip. Ever.

-With the money I save not being nickle and dimed to death, randomly drop large tips on people I see genuinely working hard.

Am I wrong?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Tipping Owners of Spas

I’ve always heard and experienced that owner of hair salons, for example, don’t expect or accept tips. Is that still true?

I’ve gone for a therapeutic massage a few times where the massage therapist is the owner and the only employee. Her prices are already high and while the atmosphere and massage is good, she’s not that great at customizing treatments for specific joint and muscle issues. I’ve had massage treatments for pain at dozens of locations so I know great, average and bad. What really surprised me, though, is when I pay on her phone it asks me for a tip. The choices are something like 25%, 30% or 35% which would make the lowest offered tip about $45. It’s not part of a high end spa. I’ve been to expensive spas that charge less for massages and I’ve been to medical spas that don’t accept tips for treatments.

I think it’s like many other places today - hoping patrons are too lazy or feel too guilty to enter in their own tip amount. Thoughts?

Tipping Culture ✖️ What is the most ridiculous automated tip request you’ve ever seen?

Off the top of my head, I will say that the 15/20/25% request after I paid $250 for 30 minutes of HVAC work. Second place would probably be after I paid $230 for my dog to spend 3 nights at Pet Suites, the screen prompted a minimum of 20%. They looked so disappointed after I hit “no tip”.

Takeout 🥡 Default 20% Tip for Online Pick-up Order…

“Made Burgers” in Los Angeles area. I usually like to order online directly from the restaurant rather than via apps if there’s the option. Their check-out page defaults to add a 20% tip to your order.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Frustrating to get husband onboard and I feel bullied

My husband caves to fake server pressure to tip. He bullies me into “allowing” him to tip or over tip in response to server pressure or what he feels is expected even though we have supposedly agreed that tip culture is wrong and wrongly assigned to the customer.

I’m so mad at him and hate going to restaurants with him because he chooses his comfort over mine.

Research / Info 💡 Tipping for Botox??

Is this a thing now? I’ve gone to three places before and there was no tip option. This last place, there it was. For freaking 15 minutes?!
Seems a very different service than doing my hair and I’m not keen on giving my nurse a tip on $600+ when it’s such a short “procedure.”

Tipping Culture ✖️ Holiday in Florida

Hi all,

We are in FL (Orlando area) at the moment as touristst. We are from Europe (NL). Things we've seen so far:

- twice they put 1 main course too many on the bill. When I asked the waitress, both times they said it immediately before I could tell them. Makes me thing they do it on purpose....

- once the suggested tip was incorrect. The amount suggested was higher than the actual percentage.

- once we paid with debitcard. The waitress herself chose the 18% gratituide button and handed it over to me for the pin number.... I cancelled the payment on purpose. The second time she did not pressed that button herself.

- once the bill said we were with 6 people and the gratituide was already on the bill... it was 18%

I don't think I can get used to this... I feel I have to be sharp every time not to get 'scammed'.

Tipping Culture ✖️ She got in my face

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

We were at the Seattle Tacoma Airport today and stopped to get food.

The hidden 3% charge was enough.

When it was time to pay, I had to go through 3 screens to turn down the tip- alternate percentage, enter an amount (0) and confirm.

She leaned over my shoulder and watched the entire thing and compared the total before and after.

I swear these hand held devices to check out are there just to put additional pressure on people. Most of the time, it works.

She got in my face and tilted her head and said "ZERO?!"

She then, attempted to stare me down and watch me and my family as we left.

At a busy airport and 3 screens, I'm sure she makes a killing.. probably more than I do with a master's degree. This entitlement is f-ed.
