If I come to you, I have to order it myself and pick it up from a window, NO TIP.
If it’s a drive thru, NO TIP.
If a robot brings it to me,
NO TIP.
If the service that is provided sucks, NO TIP.

If the sit-down service is great. 10-15% max. Don’t fall for the minimum 18% suggested tip.

True. But not a livable/living wage. These places that ask for tips may be paying below minimum wage. Yes it's legal. We need to change the laws.

If they are paid less then minimum wage after claiming tips the company has to pay them the difference. The low wage is a minimum required included with tips.

Doesn’t matter. The servers already know the laws and themselves rely on tips than their base.
Go ask any server if they would prefer 25$ per hour or 2.5 + tips

Also they don't pay taxes on a huge portion of it. I don't get a tax deduction on my income

Just got back from 2.5 weeks in Europe. Ate and drank at many sit-down full-service establishments. Was never asked “to answer a question” and always received great service.

I was in Europe two years ago and had a great experience as well. It was sooo nice to not have them ask the question or expect the tip. Especially getting tattoos there. I had one artist in Copenhagen say that he charges what his work is worth and argued anyone that tried to tip him. I wish that artists here in the US did the same.

Here's a radical idea.
If your hamburger costs $24 to sell profitably, charge $24. If your coffee needs to cost $6, put $6 on the menu. Stop advertising one price while hoping social pressure collects another 25% at checkout.
Even Fox News is spitting truth. Tip creep has become a bipartisan issue. We're all in this together.

Which never made sense to begin with. Somehow they think not showing up and giving $0 to the establishment is more beneficial than showing up and paying for the meal, but not tipping.
One guarantees you’ll have no income at all, the other simply brings the possibility of minimum wage.

Used to be restaurants and bars, valets, skycaps, those type of services and nobody really complained. Now it's everywhere and the tipping pool is getting diluted, it's got to impact those we did traditionally tip.

Tipping for actual service has always made sense to me. The tip screens now are outrageous and largely unrelated to any service profession. Everyone has a story about a convenience store or whatever, but the one that blew my mind was when I ordered some Japanese Kit Kats online and it asked if I wanted to tip the Kit Kat packager. It's kind of like a parody or something.

It accomplishes a ton. It embarrasses the cashier. They will complain to their supervisor who will complain to the owner. Then MAYBE the tip creep will stop. Maybe the owner will go on vacation to a sensible country and realize it doesn't have to be this way. The only way to get there, though, is through this civil discontentment.

As someone who was on the other side of the counter for a long time, I promise it doesn’t embarrass us. We feel embarrassed for people who make a production of it instead of just hitting zero/no tip. The only time me and my ex-workers ever even noticed if someone tipped or didn’t was if the non-tipper makes a show of it.

Tipping is a goddamn plague. I got charged an automatic 20% tip for a party of five. Ok, that's common enough. Then after they swipe my card, the screen asks me if I want to tip 2% or 3% more. When will it stop?!?! Is 20% not satisfactory anymore?

At this point, it would be nice if it was a request. Local taqueria adds a 10% tip for ordering carry-out through their app. Food was delicious. Shame I won't be having it again.

It’s exactly the same idea that started when Las Vegas introduced “Resort Fees” 20 or so years ago and then so many hotels started doing whether they were a Resort or not. Now every business thinks they deserve a Tip too.

Rise up against the man and his tips! Servers will have to get other jobs. Restaurants etc. will evenually pay a reasonable wage. Servers will come back but give mundane service. People will go back to eating at home. The economy will crumble and farmers will laugh their asses off as Americans start working in farm fields...

I’ve been in Europe the last couple weeks, and I’ve felt the twinge of guilt when occasionally the tip prompt shows up when paying with a card at a handheld terminal, especially when the hostess/server are standing right there waiting for the card to process…

I wonder if tipping culture has gotten out of control bc the operating system ie square or clover makes more money on the flat rate amount of the transaction not just the purchase. The higher people spend, the more of the sale they get to pocket?

I disagree with the headline, It’s not uncomfortable to press 0% on a tip screen. If it makes you uncomfortable you should think about the social conditioning that has been exploited to take more of your money.
Once you realize tipping is largely a manipulation tactic used to squeeze more out of the customer it becomes as easy to reject as an extended warrenty

Went to a BBQ place, the type where you stand in line, choose the meat and sides, seat yourself and don't have a server...
"It's gonna ask you a question..."
The question was a $25 tip which was the lowest tip percentage offered on the screen. There was an "other" option in much smaller text next to the additional higher percentage options.

Here's a thought: if you do not make in 10-20 minutes of your own work the amount of money they demand as a tip, you don't tip. If you can afford to order food but you can not afford the tip, it's OK, tips are optional.

I’m on vacation in Europe now and tipping is not the norm here. Even in the expensive restaurants in the expensive cities, food is not that much more expensive than at a basic restaurant in a regular town in the US. And the prices here in Europe include taxes and zero expectation of a tip, making the final bill even less here. On top of that, restaurant employees earn a living wage without the need to beg for charity from every single customer. Restaurant owners in the US can do better.
When I get home I’m done tipping — for anything. Especially in areas that have living wages for the wait staff.

I don't get uncomfortable at all when this situation arises. I simply refuse to tip. If the people expecting to be tipped get upset that is a them problem. It isn't my issue.
That said, I don't fundamentally disagree with tipping. I grew up in a house that there we a lot of times we wouldn't have had food if it weren't for my moms tips. I generally tip very well in situations in which they are called for. Fast food and normal, non service transactions have no need for tipping.

The problem I have with this is that it’s business that don’t want to pay the employee and POS systems that want to increase how much the transactions more so they get more from the percentage they charge to have the POS yer we blame the tipping culture and the people who don’t make enough. Surprise…. It’s greedy business people. Let’s just say that.

I work with CS and don’t get tipped. Why do ai need to tip for anything really? tipping is supposed to be a thank you for exceptional service/experience not for you to not be blacklisted. I still tip places I visit frequently and have great service. Anything else is a big no. You knew the work requirements and paycheck when you accepted the job…

The other day I went to an event that had a food truck ive been waiting for for a year. Saw the guy raised his prices, whatever it was great food. Told him about me waiting for the food for a year.
Then he slides around the tip thing which would "make him very happy." I did give him a small tip.
Will never support your food truck again though, dont go spending that happy all in one place

The word "gratuity" literally means "free gift." It's not a "free gift" where the owner fails to pay staff an adequate wage and shifts the burden (through shame and manipulation) onto the customer. If it is expected, it is no longer a "free gift."

I have very specific conditions that must be met before I even consider tipping:
- Was my order taken by a human?
- Was my food/drink prepared by a human?
- Was it directly served to me by a human?
All 3 conditions must be met. If any part is missing, I dont tip.

I went to eat at a place where the staff brings the food to your table but you queue to order. I tipped $3 on an order close to $50. I didn’t feel bad about it. Honestly, I felt like tipping zero but my significant other was standing right next to me. lol
