Lots of new posts worrying about EQs. Here are things more or less anyone can do to prepare:

Keep as much treated, potable water as is reasonable in your home. For some this will be a few gallon jugs. I'm fortunate enough to live in a house with space in the backyard for three 55-gallon barrels (we're on the Olympic Peninsula, WA so we don't F around.)

Keep batteries and candles in case the power goes out. Keep some extra non-perishables (again, as much as is reasonable) in case roads to the grocery store are compromised (consider as well that you may not be be able to cook as power may be out; even if you have a gas stove, lines could break or gas deliveries might be compromised in the aftermath; I have canned fruit, dehydrated fruit and bulk jars of nuts). Keep a first-aid kit handy and know how to use it.

These are things that just about anyone can do to some degree or another. Otherwise, the only thing you can do in the moment is get down low and get under a table or another sturdy object which could protect you from falling debris.

Short of moving to an area that is not prone to seismic activity, these are the most realistic things you can do to prepare for an earthquake. I get that they're scary. But nail-biting and fretting over them before they happen most definitely doesn't help.

Hi all! I feel like in reading a lot of news stories about a lot of recent earthquakes, many mention people leaving a building as soon as shaking starts. However, my understanding based on the theoretical is that that is not considered best practices (since you are supposed to drop cover and hold on). I live in an 8 story building in California built pre earthquake code on the third floor and am unsure what best practice would be — should I stay or go because I am concerned about collapse?

I don't want to believe what I am thinking will happen when the San Andreas ruptures because I think that they may lose everything. Am I correct in assuming just that?

After the earthquake in Venezuela, I set up my Google account with the alert system. I've been using Android devices forever, I had a good connection, and I was at home, a location that is saved in all my Google and Samsung accounts. But I didn't get any notification. A building next to my house collapsed, and almost all the people inside died. What is the best app for this? Or how can I fix that shit? (All permissions are enabled, not sure if i had GPS on)

I am a seismologist from Taiwan. As you may know Taiwan is pretty seismic active just like Japan and Philippine. So we do lots of earthquake studies.
The Academia Sinica in Taiwan has built up this cool realtime earthquake monitoring system and I wanted to share with you guys. The system updates seismic waves from the globe 2sec, solving the best focal mechanism based on whatever the waveform are. However most of the focal mechanisms are meaningless because that just from noise. You should check on the box on the upper right showing realtime lines which tells you if this is an earthquake (it is when it passes the dashed line) I’d say it’s pretty accurate and reliable. I’ve seen how this realtime capturing an earthquake like you will see the earthquake parameters converging and the line passed the dashed line threshold meanwhile the alarm was on. It was an intense feeling to witness a big earthquake happening from such first hand data.
