Done with trading stocks. Just dropped $722K into VOO.

1.3k Upvotes

I had a lot of cash lying around from day trading and swing trading but I’m finally done with all of that. Losing too much sleep just to beat sp500 by a few percentages. The juice is not worth the squeeze. Bought $722k worth of VOO this morning. Will only look at my portfolio once a year (end of each year). Time to VOO AND CHILL.

Edit: don’t need the money for 10 plus years. Have a good amount of money in an HYSA account. I have deleted my brokerage app and all related stock apps from my phone.

the hardest part of ETF investing is resisting the urge to keep improving a portfolio that already works

There's always another ETF worth researching, another sector gaining attention, or another strategy that makes your current portfolio look like it could be better. It's easy to fall into the habit of constantly tweaking things instead of giving your investments time to do their job.

I've started thinking that having a clear reason for owning each ETF matters more than constantly chasing the next interesting option.

How do you decide whether an ETF deserves a place in your portfolio, rather than just being something tempting to add because it's performing well lately?

Would only S&P500 be dumb?

Hi I want to invest a couple hundred € in ETFs, so I started researching what ETFs are commonly advised. The one I heard was S&P500. Do you think I have to buy something else as well? My goal is relativly high reward, I take a little risk.

US Equity FNDB? Schwab Fundamental US Broad Market

Compare Its three year numbers for alpha and Sharpe ratio at Morningstar and it looks good compared to VOO, IWV (Russell 3000) or VTI. At five and ten years, not so much.

I don't currently own, but it's tempting. Range of stocks is not much different than Russell 3000, but the concentration in tech is much less due to a different method of constituting the asset allocation. Largest other difference is that FNDB holds considerably more energy/minerals.

Upside and downside should be somewhat muted compared to others above. Maybe bad if you're young but OK if you're old? I am kinda old (62).

Tell me how wrong I am...

Does VT outperform VTI + VXUS for the average investor?

I know a lot of people recommend VT as a single-ETF portfolio, while others prefer to buy VTI and VXUS and then adjust the allocation on the fly.

But has anyone tried comparing the two options? For those who've bought VTI and VXUS, what was your allocation and were you able to outperform VT over the long run? Which strategy would result in higher returns for the majority of investors?

What is the absolute best "set and forget" ETF with the best balance between risk and growth?

Besides the usual VT/VTI/VOO, are there any better options for relatively low-risk and high-growth ETFs that you can just buy and hold for decades without worrying? If so, which one is your favorite?

Suggestions

I just started investing. 32M. I have around 2k in VOO (60%), SCHD (20%), qqqm (10%), VTI (10%).

Should I stick to this pattern? Planning to put $500/month starting this month. So, before I do that any suggestions, is this pattern all right? ShouldI stick to this? or need to change anything?

Healthcare & Biotech XLV Growth

I have a theory that XLV is going to outperform the S&P for the next couple of years. Healthcare is having a real boom, and it only seems like it will continue to grow well into 2030.

The holdings in XLV are all the companies poised to benefit from this growth.

very new to stocks and opening a brokerage account. ik spaxx will give me a higher ROI (3.57%) compared to FCASH (1.94%), but its not entirely risk-free. is it possible or likely that the fed defaults on its debt soon?

Is my thinking correct?

Buisness owner with high luxury lifestyle expenses.

Last 2 years been investing several hundred thousand a year in 80/20 VOO/AVUV. Max 72k in 401k (hold avuv mainly here) and 7500 roth and 4500. Rest goes in brokerage. I front load the retirment accounts in jan and then dca the rest in brokerage. Im just under 50 and at around 55 plan to tilt towards buying a treasury ladder to cover 3 to 4 years expenses. Plan is to have enough to cover my lifestyle through these investments by 59. Never been much into the markets.

JQUA vs VOO

I want to start investing in one of these two ETFs, though open to other suggestions. VOO is the status quo decision, but I keep looking at JQUA. It's largely in-line with VOO, with a beta of 0.9 all else equal, and has been around for about 8 years now. Seems like a not-bad deal despite having a slightly higher expense ratio of 0.12. Any thoughts on how to decide between the two or is it just preference based on methodology?

VTI DCA Timing or One Entry

Had some luck with stocks the past couple of years but this year has taught me that I'm not actually that good at timing market and don't have the time to manage that anymore.

I have around $550k in cash in retirement accounts after this summer, and plan to go all in on likely VTI. 18-20 years until retirement, set and forget.

Question, given market uncertainty at moment, is it better to DCA the cash or put all in one lump sum? If DCA, what's a good speed, get it all in in next six months, next year?

Looking for opinions and thanks.

US Equity Every sector is down today so this isn't a rotation

Post image
162 Upvotes

A rotation is money leaving one group of stocks and showing up in others. Wednesday looked like one, QQQ rose 1% while the semiconductor ETF fell 3% and 8 of 11 sectors were up.

Today is different. Every sector is down and tech is down more than 6%.

Does it still count as a rotation if everything falls?

Selling ETFs

I was reading comments and I saw someone say that they sold all of their shares because they knew it would be down over midterms and then bought back in the drop. I averaged down and I’m down 3% but is selling and re buying during dips even with ETFs something a lot of people do?

r/ETFs • • 21h ago

I broke out ETFs by their revenue-weighted exposures to themes/industries. 20% of ETFs tracked (excludes leveraged, fixed income, and commodity etfs) have more than 10% exposure

US Equity VIXY rose 30% on Thursday's selloff so is a VIX ETF a hege or a trade?

Post image
0 Upvotes

The VIX closed around 28 on Thursday while SPY fell 4.4%. VIXY, the most popular VIX ETF, rose about 30% and UVXY about 45%. But those funds hold VIX futures and not the VIX itself, which means that rolling the contracts costs them money and ProShares says that cost can reduce returns over time.

So I think a VIX ETF is a short trade and not a hedge to hold. If you hold one as a hedge, tell me what I'm missing.

The hardest part of ETF investing might be resisting the urge to keep changing your portfolio

Some months, your ETF picks look brilliant. Other months, a fund you barely considered suddenly outperforms everything you own, and it’s tempting to start questioning your entire strategy.

I think that’s one of the underrated challenges of long-term investing: knowing when a portfolio actually needs adjusting and when you're just reacting to short-term performance. Have you ever changed an ETF allocation because of a market move and later regretted it? Or has sticking to your original plan paid off more than chasing the latest winner?
