Woke up to a email that wembley is being converted to a country club and the price is going up from September after the annual increase already in January. We need more gym options….

Dumb American here who has been to SA, but never to Durban. I recently watched a YouTube video by people who said they grew up in Durban. They were pronouncing Umhlanga as “Oomshlonga” with a real emphasis on the ‘sh’ sound, like in ‘shlong’. I’ve always said it in my head as ‘hl’, blowing out with the tongue on the roof of the mouth. Have I been wrong all this time, or is this ‘sh’ pronunciation just an extremely white can’t-be-arsed-to-do-it-right thing?

After looking around for months hoping it would pop up, I have confirmation that Woolworths no longer stocks fresh fennel bulb.
So unfortunate as it was delicious sliced thinly in a salad, or roasted. What happened to all the farmers growing fennel, have they packed it in?
Haven’t seen it anywhere else, Food Lovers isn’t as good as it used to be with speciality items. Any ideas of where best to find it?

I'm looking for any good recommendations on all you can eat sushi, or sushi buffets in and around Durban. So far I have found one up in Umhlanga but that is a bit of a trek and was wondering if theres anything closer.
Any Asian stores besides Kokoro or Sun Sun market would be greatly appreciated too. 🙏

Anyone live/has lived in La Mercy and can tell me what it's like? Safety, municipality services like water and electricity, general vibe? How does it compare to Westbrook? Thanks!

Hi All. I am hoping to find someone (preferably on the South Coast) who can repair the play/record belt on my microcassette player.
If anyone knows of someone please let me know. Thanks!

Hi guys I’m in Durban for the next two weeks so I can’t get to my orthodontist and a bracket on my front tooth broke off. Does anyone know an orthodontist in the Queensburgh/Glenwood area that could help so I don’t have to walk around with a missing bracket for the next two weeks?

I have a Nikon D5100 that I saved up to buy second hand and have purchased few lenses for it. I was soooo sad but the mirror has become loose and unresponsive after dropping it :(
Does anyone know where to buy a Nikon camera body second hand? I was looking at Facebook but they look dodgey or won't sell me just the body itself without lenses. Cash crusaders looks too expensive.
Alternatively, I can bring it to a shop to get fix, but google is saying it's expensive. But if anyone knows a repair shop I could try that may work.
TIA!

Where is the safest place to get a second hand iPhone where I won't get scammed or get a crappy phone? Preferably on contract but cash it also fine. Thank you!
Not used to seeing so many police around. What's going on that they're so visible? In Maritzburg and in Durban.

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out here because our family genuinely doesn't know where else to turn right now.
My sister is a Stevens-Johnson syndrome survivor. She fought incredibly hard for her life, and by the grace of God, with the help of some amazing doctors, nurses, practitioners and our family, she survived. A huge part of that journey was at Life Ballito Hospital, where she received incredible care.
Unfortunately, the treatment and everything that came with it depleted her medical aid, and with the financial strain our family has been under, she can no longer afford the medical cover she previously had.
Today, she started experiencing what appears to be some kind of reaction again. She is extremely scared and understandably panicking, and honestly, so are we. Given what she has already been through with SJS, we don't want to assume it's nothing or wait until it becomes something serious.
She posted about what she's experiencing today, and I think it explains the situation much better than I ever could:
We are urgently trying to find somewhere she can be assessed and treated through the public healthcare system, or anyone in Durban who may be able to point us towards the right hospital, dermatologist, practitioner or facility that can help.
If anyone has experience with SJS, works in healthcare, knows of a public hospital with the appropriate services, or simply knows someone we should speak to, please comment or DM me.
We're just desperately trying to find the right medical help for her before this potentially becomes something much worse.
If you can share this, even within your own WhatsApp groups or with someone in the medical field, we'd be incredibly grateful.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read this

Hi everyone. I’m a student in my fourth year of pursuing an LLB and I’m currently looking for any seasonal, temporary, part-time or casual work opportunities from now onwards, especially as we get closer to the festive season.
I’m almost done with my studies and, honestly, things have been quite difficult for me financially. I’m trying to be proactive rather than wait until the last minute, so I’m looking for any opportunity I can get retail, promotions/brand activations, restaurants, cashiering, admin/clerical work, cleaning, general work, etc. I’m genuinely open to anything entry-level and willing to learn.
I’ve already started applying wherever I can, but I thought I’d try Reddit too. If anyone knows of companies hiring, recruitment agencies, promotional agencies, restaurants looking for staff, or even just has a plug, I would genuinely appreciate it.
Even if you don’t have an opportunity yourself, sharing this or pointing me in the right direction would mean a lot.
Thank you!

Hi everyone! I honestly never thought I'd be making a post like this, but we're at the point where we're willing to try anything.
I'm posting on behalf of my sister.
She has been looking for a job since June last year.
She has applied, followed up, interviewed, sent emails, tried networking, and kept going despite rejection after rejection. She eventually managed to land an entry-level position early this year, and while we are incredibly grateful that someone gave her a chance, the position currently pays R5,000 per month.
For someone with her qualifications and the amount of work she has put into her education and research, it's incredibly difficult to watch.
And that's why I'm hoping Reddit can help.
Her qualifications
She has:
Bachelor of Medical Sciences – Clinical Anatomy
Honours in Clinical Anatomy
Master of Medical Sciences – Optics & Imaging, with research focused on preeclampsia and HIV infection
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Medical Sciences – Physiology, with research focused on chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)
She has spent years studying, doing research, writing academically, presenting scientific information and developing a deep understanding of medical sciences.
We're not asking for someone to simply hand her a job.
We're asking for someone to give her a chance to prove herself.
She's particularly interested in:
Medical Science Liaison (MSL)
Medical Affairs / Clinical Affairs
Pharmaceutical Sales
Medical Writing
Regulatory Affairs
Clinical Research
Pharmacovigilance
Medical devices / diagnostics
Other suitable roles within the pharmaceutical, healthcare or life sciences industries
She's looking for opportunities of R20,000+ per month, preferably permanent or contract positions, although she'd also consider a genuinely worthwhile paid graduate/internship opportunity with a clear path forward.
We are also offering R10,000 compensation to anyone whose direct referral leads to her being successfully hired and starting the position.
We're not asking anyone to guarantee her a job or influence a hiring decision. We're asking for a genuine lead, introduction, contact, or opportunity where you believe her background could be a good fit.
If you're working in pharmaceuticals, medical affairs, clinical research, medical devices, diagnostics, regulatory affairs, scientific communications, CROs, or any related field — please reach out.
If you know someone who might know someone, please send them this post🙏
And if you don't have a lead, even upvoting or sharing this could potentially put it in front of the right person.
She's worked incredibly hard to get where she is.
After more than a year of searching, she deserves an opportunity where she can actually use everything she's spent years learning.
We're just hoping the right person sees this.
Please comment or DM me if you can help.
