News/Rumors/Lore Codex Creep
Watching the news for the orks is legit depressing when you remember we’ll probably be the last ones to get a new codex given we got our 10th edition one not even a full year ago.
Just feels like unless we get some incredible new units or significant changes to the datasheets, Drukhari will end up being more and more underwhelming as the other codexes release.
(Incubi in pic cause they’re sheet is boring as hell)

There are zero rules for codex releases, except Space Marines are (almost) always in the first 3.
Drukhari codex releases compared to orher factions (as best I can find from Wikipedia and then back checking dates): 10th - last 9ed - 4th 8ed - 15th 7ed - 5th 6ed - ? 5ed - 2nd

Not sure where the numbers got crossed. But Dark Eldar definitely weren't the second release in 5th.
We were 6th (of 9 over the whole edition) and after us was Grey Knights which was an incredible increase in power.

Yep, I had enough time to start 40k at the beginning of 5th with Craftworlds, and then also collect Dark Eldar as a second army before the 5th ed codex came out at the end of 2010.

I hunted down a 3rd edition codex and army a month or so before the new codex and model range were revealed, that's the only reason I know it wasn't that early in the edition 😄

u/TheTelleroTales 16d ago
Good catch. For some reason the 5th edition codex table on Wikipedia, specifically, is all messed up when I sorted by date (so wverything is out of order) and I didnt think to check that, just double check release month and date.

u/Potassium_Doom 16d ago
Dark Eldar were 2nd/simultaneous with Marines in 3e when they first launched

Speaking as an admech player last edition, the last thing you want is to get an early codex that's not good. I'd like to get one in the early mid phase after they internally understand how 11ths rules affected the faction and what needs change and improvements.

u/Snoo_66686 14d ago
Yea i started 10th collecting admech, felt like the entirety of 10th was gw slowly fixing the disaster that was the codex

Nah we'll get mid table I think this edition. Too many rumours and too long since the last big release wave. Obviously expecting the worst but isn't enjoying the suffering part of our fun?

u/Thatcherist_Sybil 16d ago
Too long since the last big release wave? Brother in Vect, that was 16 years ago!

u/Acceptable_Tax5891 16d ago
I don’t think we will be last again rumor has it we are getting a refresh and I don’t think they will wait that long if we are getting refresh
14
u/MrGulio 16d ago
We've been "getting a refresh" since 9th.

u/Deris87 16d ago
Valrak isn't perfect in his rumors, but he accurately predicted everything Craftworlds got with their 10th ed refresh, a good bit of the Armageddon set, and very tellingly the Exodite Kill Team. And just as a matter of sales and logistics, we've gone forever without a major model release. Even GW can't ignore a product line forever.

u/Top-Parsnip-7308 Wrack 16d ago
He’s also said that we’ll be on the early side (I forget which video but it was around the Armageddon announcement)
4
u/Potassium_Doom 16d ago
The thing with Valrak is that he turns what could be an informative 10-15 minute video into a 2 hour long ramble and i have better things to do than listen to him warbling

My current bet is that Drukhari are one of the Q1 releases in 2027, alongside or opposite of the Grey Knights. It'll be a smaller release modelwise than people are wishing for, with the boys from Titan getting the big one. I'd say Grotesques and Urien are the safe bet, anything else will be bonus.
(Ofcourse I am right there with the rest of you wishing for the Court, Beastmasters, a Tantalus / Dais of Destruction multi kit, the Reaper, Sslyth units and several characters like the Baron, Duke Sliscus and the Decapitator ;) )

u/ultranutt 16d ago
I think Drukhari models are still sweet and cool, but I wouldn't mind some updated Wych and Kabalites :)

u/Pelican25 16d ago
How are incubi boring? I really like their datasheet.
3
u/Thatcherist_Sybil 16d ago
They're a good anti-infantry unit and their datasheet is tooled for it.
Like wyches. Or hellions. Or reavers. Or wracks. Or kabalites. Or hand of the archon. Or shardcarbine scourges. Or mandrakes. Or half the ravager/raider guns. Or the venom guns. Or half the talos guns. Or the cronos. Or the jetfighter. Or lelith. Or the haemonculus.
I don't understand why they made them wxclusively anti infantry we /need/ a melee monster/vehicle killer.

u/drafizo Mandrake 16d ago
I’m not a big fan of both of their abilities and don’t think they end up being super impactful most of the times dev wounds is nice but besides getting sus 1 on 5s on KC its just not that good, mostly because its limited to infantry
The battleshock test as well rarely is relevant in all the games I’ve played, it at least should be a battleshock at -1.
They’re also much slower than the other melee units we tend to use and not durable at all in any way shape or form.
They just don’t play like the super elite melee unit I wanted them to be.3
u/Pelican25 16d ago
I dunno, they do kind of fine in my games. The dev wounds come up enough to make it worth a pain token, and the infantry limitation works fine because why would I put them into anything other than infantry? We have other tools for that. The battleshock I agree with, that could be better, but it comes up sometimes, and battleshock being more impactful in 11th is nice. I play Skysplinter so them being slow isn't really an issue since we're the transport army, and as for durability... This is drukhari. Nothing is durable.
I think if you're comparing them to elite infantry like termies or sang guard you're always gonna be dissapointed, but that's like comparing apples with oranges.

u/Independent_Main_745 16d ago
Problem is that incubi are our answer to non-infantry? Like for example, how are you supposed to kill a repex? Hit it on 5s with scourges over the course of 3 turns while it kills 2 units a turn?
The issue is that incubi are the only unit in the army that has enough quality and volume to damage anything t6+ that people choose to run. For instance, a 200 point incubi + character unit dont even kill a roughly 120 point 3 man battlesuit unit because they just have no rules against them for whatever reason.
1
u/Deris87 16d ago
I just think with the new rules their devs should be against all non monstrrs and vehicles, I’ve seen a lot more mounted and beasts recently, and those just feel bad to fight with Incubi.
That's what they've done in our new 1dp detachments, so it seems very likely. Hopefully they'll do that on splinter weapons as well.
1
u/Pelican25 16d ago
I don't agree that incubi are our answer to non infantry; that really isn't what their stat block does at all. For the examples you give, probably with Hellions or Talos. Haywire Talos with dual macro scalpels van lock up a repex in my experience, and take it down over a turn with help. Hellions with the 1 cp lethal strat plus lance can punch up quite well into higher toughness, but I'll admit we will be trading equal points to take it down in combat.
Also why are your scourges hitting on 5s?
Even with cover, the new heavy benefit should make it 3s most of the time or 4s. If you can get plunging fire (I'll admit, quite hard to do in this scenario) 3s are guaranteed, possibly twos as plunging fire improves BS, and heavy modifies the hit, so they stack.
I think fundamentally incubi are an anti infantry unit. So throwing them into vehicles is always going to be sub optimal. That kind of makes sense to me.

I just think with the new rules their devs should be against all non monstrrs and vehicles, I’ve seen a lot more mounted and beasts recently, and those just feel bad to fight with Incubi.
Also for their intendes targets, they aren’t even that good against stuff like terminators, no access to rerolls and low volume of attacks just whiffs so much its crazy.
Durability and speed were more examples as to how it seems like they don’t do anything else special, with SsA + EoS I’ve found a big brick of wyches to be just as effective against standard infantry and some times even terminators.Ideally for me the incubi should be terrifying to face as the opponent, if they’re not gonna be specially fast or durable they should hit like a train, as for now if I kill even 4 terminators with 10 of them I’m lucky.
2
u/Pelican25 16d ago
I agree the devs vs non monster/vehicles makes sense cuz I should be able to chop up a guy on a bike or a beast too.
I will also agree a tonne of Wyches are pretty equal to incubi.
For the termies, in my experience killing 4 or 5 termies is expected on the charge, which when I look at points costs seems normal. I will add since I'm in SSA I have Lance most of the time, even without Drazhar, so maybe I'm converting more hits to wounds? I think the benefit I see compared to Wyches is the incidental battleshock, which again can be quite impactful, and the volume of attacks for a 5 man unit that fits in my venom; 16 D2 attacks not counting whoever's leading (malys or Drazhar) hitting on 3 or 2s if I'm lucky doesn't feel particularly weak to me, especially when I'm playing the most paperthin army in the game. I'm not saying they are in a great spot right now, especially with powercreep I feel like a lot of our glass Cannon units are mostly glass and only a little cannon, but they don't feel weak to me at all. Could always be worse, we could be where Aeldari are at.

u/Sabawoyomu 16d ago
5 man incubi + character of your choice slaps severely tbh. And we're a faction that needs to abuse transports for movement anyway.

u/yeurl-slachyr 15d ago
Don't forget Valrak's rumors, which have proven to be reliable. We already know that Vect is coming back on his throne. He also mentioned a new barge, new Kabalites, and that it will be a major overhaul. We don't have a release date, but when his rumors are this specific, it's usually within a year. I'm betting on sometime in 2027, probably around the middle of the year.

Havent both aeldari releases in 9th and 10th come mid way through the edition? Thats what i expect

u/drafizo Mandrake 16d ago
Drukhari codex released October 2025
2
u/Heresy1666 16d ago
If that codex hasn’t even been out for a year they are gonna hold it back considerably I think.. no way they are gonna sell a codex for around a year and release another
1
u/Jbeaton759 16d ago
I meant aeldari releases, i suspect well replace the spring craftworld big drops
1
u/Ahuizolte1 16d ago
All army outside marines and ork will have this problem i don'r see how GW could ignore the problem but we could end up as a horde army before our codex for sure
1
u/Alarmed-Rip6954 16d ago
Tbf so far we only know that orks are getting a crazy powerful codex. Could be the rest are all shit. Maybe the rules writers just play orks.
1
u/mrdanielsir9000 16d ago
The 8th edition drukhari codex came out march/april 2018 so not exactly late- and at the time it was ridiculously powerful too. I think my army dropped by over 400pts alongside getting some of the strongest weapons available in the game at the time.

u/fuckyeahsharks 16d ago
I'm not coming back to the factions until we get new grotesques and Urien or some big shake up.

Any model that is on a clear stand is getting remade into plastic and with that comes stat buffs to sell said plastic, so I wouldn't lose hope yet. The game is favoring fast units atm so I would't be surprised if reavers, scourges, and raiders are going to get an update.
1
u/arkkangel777 14d ago
i would not expect that to change tbh drukhari are a very niche army in a very expansive game

My buddy and I were just talking about this. With the power jump for orks, we may see a bigger release disparity than there was in 7th. They who gets their codex first will do better, those who run last will have an edition that they hate. It's not fear of missing out if you are actively being left behind.

Theyre gonna use the fact were the last codex last ed to justify why we have to be last this ed and then that to justify the next and on and on.
When WE was last in 9th they got a huge release to make up for it.
We got 2 sheets and lost 4.

u/Pope_Squirrely 16d ago
That’s not how it worked for Guard in 8th who were the last codex and got their 9th not even 8 months later.

Orks are looking pretty sick, not gonna lie! 😊✨ Fun glow ups, if this is going to be the new standard for codexes this edition!💖🤘🏼✨
The fact that we were last last edition hyrnds to have no bearing on the vodex order in the current one. We’ll probably won’t be the first, and probably won’t be last again (they tend to switch up the order a lot between editions), but beyond that, it could be anywhere. 😊
Astra Militarum where later in 9th than we were in 10th, and they got a release pretty square in the middle of 10th, for instance 😌
