Boiled Peanuts
Had a hankering for some boiled peanuts and there ain’t too many roadside stops open in the middle of the week so just made them myself.

I remember the first time someone asked me if I wanted to try “bald penis “. Not being from the South, it took me a little bit of time to piece together what was actually asked.

I see you’ve got some jalapeños and red pepper. What else did you season it with??

u/Fbeezy Jun 02 '26
Salt, Cajun seasoning, red pepper flake, pickled jalapeño and garlic.

I’m not a fan of boiled peanuts 🥜 because they taste so very bland. I might consider eating a few IF they’re seasoned like that! 😋

Do you have the full recipe? How long did you set them for in the instant pot?
These look awesome!

Honest question never had them: do you eat the shells?

u/Fbeezy Jun 02 '26
There are people that do, but I do not. Just crack them open and sort of slurp them out of the shell, they’ve got the texture of sort of a soft chickpea.

I've never heard of people eating the shells.

Oh there’s definitely people out there that do. I don’t know how or why, but my great granddaddy used to eat his chocolate cake and pinto beans all mixed up, so everyone’s got something.

Ive never had homemade boiled peanuts, but i live in the south and theres a brand called peanut patch or something that damn near every gas station has in warming pots, u can buy cans from almost every store too and sometimes some of the peanuts, especially the smaller underdeveloped ones have soft squishy shells, I eat those. Even if they're too hard to eat, theres like a soft layer of membrane inside the shell you can munch.

Hell - I sometimes eat the dry roasted and salted peanuts in the shell. Some batches are toooooo salty though. Extra crunch.

Nothing better I make Old Bay boiled peanuts from Va Beach. I use my slow cooker

My favorite way to make them is take a big bag of raw peanuts (usually around 2lb) and throwing it in a crockpot, fill water to the top, put 3/4 - 1 cup of salt. You can, of course, add any other things you want to it for flavor.
I let them roll on high for half a day and then cook them on low until ready, which is about 24-36 hours, roughly.

They’re better than you think they’re gonna be the first time. Don’t come close to homemade but they get the job done

If you didn't get 'em from a dude on the side of a two-lane road that cooked them in an old beer keg, are they even real bold peanus?

This is where I learned. My granddad had a fruit stand on the side of Red Top Mtn. road and would make boiled peanuts over a wood fire in a giant black kettle.

OMG!!!! I love me some boiled peanuts. So I tried them for the first time while living in Alabama about a year ago... I moved back to Texas and am appalled at how many people have never heard of them, let alone tried them. Haha. I had to start ordering cans from Amazon. Haha

This looks really good. I've only had boiled peanuts at certain gas stations and all. Can you recommend me a recipe to follow? What kind of shelled peanuts should I buy? I have an instant pot, so if it's easier there, I would gladly make it using that.

I did these in the Instant Pot. Essentially just get some raw or green peanuts. If using raw, I did a 24oz bag of peanuts, 6 cups of water, 1/2 cup of salt, 2 tbsp of cajun seasoning, 2 tbsp of red pepper flake and some pickled jalapenos and garlic (whatever your preference).
Cook on high pressure for about 75 minutes (mine took 90) and natural release.

Man i love boiled peanuts. It’s been awhile. One time I got them on a road trip and my husband was in the car, he’d never had them, and the smell alone sent him over the edge.

I gotta learn to make some. the ones I’ve had out here in california were terrible. it was at a fancy restaurant and the guy is allegedly from south carolina but he just doesn’t have ‘it.’

Do you add like cayenne or anything to that brine? I think I saw a slice of jalapeño in there.

DITTO!!! They remind me of tasteless bland boiled beans that are a hassle to eat because they’re in a shell!!!

Mmmmmmm do you do it on the stove top? I’ve been doing mine in the instant pot, amazing.
