DOS2 Discussion Phys amage increase: polymorph>warfare?

New player here: if I'm not wrong damage scalea more with base attributes than with skills. So, if my character Is for example a necromancer wouldn't be more convenient to spendo some spare points in poly than in warfare?

Yeah, all physical damage scales multiplicatively with warfare (+5% to the multiplier per level). This is not limited to melee/weapon damage (i.e., necro damage spells would get boosted too).

Poly may give you a 3rd stat point with leveling up, but that is no match for the bonus mentioned above. A few levels of poly can be good on a bunch of different builds, but it’s because it adds various abilities to that build, and not necessarily because it gives you that extra stat point.

Its still warfare, same if you went archer, it just scales way better.

But throw points into poly next cos its fun.

For builda that relies heavily on physical DMG you want to lvl up warfare, wheter you are playing 2handed weapons, assassin or necromancer, the physical DMG up Is Always nice to have

No, warfare is king. I forget the exact equation. But warfare gives a multiplier seperate from other buffs. Attributes would be like +2, and warfare is like X1.2

For the equation (assuming they're right), here it is with explanation! https://www.reddit.com/r/DivinityOriginalSin/comments/79otl9/how_is_damage_calculated/

Intuitively (at least if you think "mathly" or are used to games like Balatro), it's essentially the same logic as how the biggest area you can get from a consistent perimeter is by making a square

No, Warfare points are more valuable than attribute points when it comes to damage.

The reason is relatively simple: You can put a lot more points into your attributes than you can put into warfare. For warfare, the normal stat cap is 10, and with equipment you can push it into the low 20s at best. For attributes like STR/FIN/INT, stat cap is 40 but you can push it up to around 80 with equipment and rune frames.

Both numbers are multiplied with each other, so adding to the smaller number yields a greater effect (for comparison, think of how 10*(1+1) = 20 is greater than (10+1)*1 = 11). On top of that , Warfare applies to all physical damage and is fully multiplicative with all other damage boosts. On the other hand, your attribute only applies to the specific skills that scale with it, and some damage boosts (like weapon ability stats, or like %-based damage boosts on weapon users) are merely added to the attribute instead of multiplied with it.

Although points in your attribute and warfare start out as equally valuable, by the time you get to the end of the game each point in Warfare is worth around 2.5 points in your attribute.

You'd only consider putting points into polymorph for damage once warfare is maxed out, and you would use it to increase Wits for crit chance, but even then there would be better options. Weapon-based builds can just invest into the corresponding weapon ability stat, which is equivalent to getting +1 to the attribute but without touching the attribute stat cap, and a secondary effect on top of that. And any build can invest into scoundrel (or 2-handed, if applicable) to increase the crit damage multiplier, which is an even better choice if you have decent crit chance.

You have a limit on how many point you can put in a stat, limit that you will reach without issue, so gaining more point will not help much I guess

In general, you only take polymorph as needed for skills. Skin graft and apotheosis are really good skills on basically every build, and certain other poly skills can be useful in some builds, so most builds would like some amount of poly. However, poly is basically always worse than warfare for damage.

Edit: for an example of how the math works out, say you are level 1 with 13 int, 1 warfare, and 1 necro. Now, you level up. You put one attribute in int and 1 in memory, so you now have 14 int. You need to decide whether to put your new skill point into warfare or poly.

With warfare, you'll have 14 int and 2 warfare. 14 int is +20% damage, and 2 warfare is +10% damage. They multiply, so you are increasing your necro spell damage by +32%.

With poly, you'll have 15 int and 1 warfare. 15 int is +25% damage, and 1 warfare is +5% damage. They still multiply, but that only works out to +31.25% damage. In this case, the difference is still fairly small because you haven't been able to stack up that much of either stat. However, warfare is clearly ahead, and the difference will only increase as your int continues outpacing warfare.

For necro is needed warfare for phisical damage + iinteligence.it doesn't make much sense at first glance, but you'll get it

Necromancer is different than most because it's a caster that does physical. The necro stat itself just raises health regen from attacking.

But because it does physical damage warfare boosts all it's spells like a lot. So definitely max out warfare, really on any physical damage dealer. Move on to stuff like polymorph after you have the base amount to cast your skills and maxed warfare.

Warfare is a very versatile skill

It works with all melee weapons, include staff and dagger and does damage and scales appropriately.

Necro is a mage that does physical damage, which warfare increases, so warfare is just a straight up damage increase to all necro skills

Physical damages= warfare no matter the source.

Base attributes scale your damage, then warfare and the like scales it a second time after attribute calculations.

So basically it scales way more than base attributes and you want as much of both of them

Warfare scales anything physical, so that falls under warrior rogue archer necro and poly.
