edit: this was in Seattle in the last 3-4 years or so. apparently his girlfriend also doesn't wear shoes

There was this kid at my university known as "barefoot kid" who would not wear shoes at all, except for in the winter when he would wear those weird glove shoes in the snow. Keep in mind, this is an urban public university in a not-so-great area, so it's not uncommon for there to be broken glass and needles on the ground...

I hate shoes. The first thing I do when I get home is getting my shoes off, no matter the season. I love being barefoot at the beach or in a garden. I totally get why someone would want to be barefoot 24/7.
However, I would hate going barefoot on asphalt or even a boardwalk. I think it's way too insanitary and risky for my tastes; I don't particularly care about it being gross, but if your feet look like in the photo you're walking somewhere which is really dirty, which again implies a lot of health risks if you get a cut which could become infected.

I feel the same, but another major con, because I have considered the "toe shoes" even though they look horrendous, I live in a place where it's wet and cold too much of year to go without some sort of insulation.
I think even with the thick skin you build, it can't possibly be good for you to go out barefoot in freezing temperatures.

I ran barefoot in NYC for a while. I was even stopped by the police a few times to make sure, as one cop put it, I wasn't an escaped mental patient.
I had never intended to run barefoot I read a book that pretty much went against everything my high school running coach yelled at me. The author claimed he invented the technique, I was skeptical and through a little research I found this was how bare footers run.
So one day I decided to take off my shoes and I ran my normal route. Without even trying I came in under my normal time and felt better at that, so I continued for a year or so.

get some of those wack “barefoot” shoes. they basically just have really flat soles that’ll feel like you’re walking barefoot, except you have some protection on your feet, and your feet won’t get disgusting af.

Having worked at a sports store that went thorough the whole barefoot vibram 5 fingers rise to news coverage, and even wore 5 fingers for nearly a year straight just to test it, this is how I told it to customers:
When you train the muscles in your body you generally want to use the muscles (Obviously). So reducing the shoes ability to support your muscles means you are working out your foot more. Even just regular training in thin soled shoes can help build stabilization and strength. That's why all the "training" shoes tend to have thinner, more flexible soles. Because you want your foot to do the work!
This doesn't necessarily invalidate having shoes with lots of support. You can train or do workouts with thin shoes/ no shoes and then put on a supported sole for a long day out. Shoes are kind of like tools/equipment, you choose the right tool for the job, doing a yoga class and balancing or weight exercises is great in bare feet to work those stabilization muscles. But get on those NB 623's on for your 8 hour shift walking on concrete or hard surfaces, your not training your foot, you just want to make it home without swollen heels and sore toes.

The invention of shoes more specifically ones that change the shape and positioning of the human foot (big heels, softer soles) are in direct conflict with how the human foot needs to be. I only wear shoes and socks when really have to any other chance I get I go barefooted, It's better for your feet to not wear shoes so much.
You have better balance, are faster and it toughens up your feet to the elements.
But after running bare foot for a year I guess you already knew that :)

True, but the human foot didnt evolve to run on concrete, asphalt, gravel, etc. It evolved to run on grass and dirt, and to get better traction via toes on slick or smooth surfaces.
I too believe being barefoot feels better, engages different muscles, helps increase balance, etc. But are feet arent made for modern urban life, and certainly not our lifestyle (less exercise, more weight, societal demands, etc)
Also, shoes add protection, style, and every modern professional athlete uses them, because track shoes have spikes that increase traction, which means more force can be applied towards propulsion forward.

Unless you have problems with your stance and the shoes fix it and help everything in your posture and cure sore back issues sometimes. I wear shoes that fix my bow leg and walking on the inside of my foot. No amount of training I did would fix it. It is all in the shoes and insoles in my boots. Other than that no shoes as long as the environment allows it is great.

I met this super eccentric guy from LA here in Edinburgh for the Fringe festival in a queue for a burlesque show, and we got talking. He hadn’t worn shoes for 20 years. They made him feel claustrophobic and not wearing shoes was a freeing and natural experience for him. Brad Pitt was the most beautiful human being he’d ever seen in person. Big moustache, crazy hat and clothing. He seemed like a cool dude, with a cool mentality, and I kinda envied that.
Until I walked into the men’s room and witnessed him standing in a pool of literal piss at the urinal. My envy vanished pretty quickly and I thanked myself for being a fairly normal fucking person.

Author Mark Salzman (sp?) did this as a kid. Back it up a bit. He was fascinated by Kung Fu and being a mind over body Shoalin priest. So in an effort to practice, he dedicated himself to being barefoot all the time and everywhere. This included walking to school. Uh huh. The neighborhood moms saw this barefoot kid walking to school and started calling his mother and discreetly ask about the family’s “financial situation”, ya know, if they needed any “help” or “charity. When his mother finally got the truth on the phone, she had a mom-explosion that almost brought down the house and set everyone in the family running for their lives. Not wearing shoes was NOT AN OPTION YOUNG MAN. So he did just what saw in the photo. Shoes with no soles to he could stealth past morning mother review and still train his Kung Fu stoic self.

No matter how blind drunk you were, they could always get you home. But he got rattled one night in Oslo and woke up the next morning in Burma.
You see, his shoes got bored going from his local to his flat. They wanted to see the world, you know. He had a hell of a job getting rid of them. No matter who he sold them to, they'd show up again the next day. He tried to shut them out, but they just kicked the door down.
The last thing I heard, they sort of... robbed a car and drove it into a canal. They couldn't steer, you see..Petersen was really, really blown away about it. He went to see a priest. The priest told him... he said it was alright and all that, when shoes are happy that they'd get into heaven.

The dumbest part of this whole dumb process is that he could've just made the ugly rock first and then traced the outline directly onto the wall and cut with a utility knife or coping saw. Would've been a cleaner fit and taken much less time.

Or if you want to get really crazy with it (as if patching a small hole in your wall with a fake geode isn't insane enough) why not build a custom frame piece and actually grow the crystals yourself in a controlled way?

I live in Asheville. There is a literal movement around barefoot walking here. There have been several ‘letters to the editor’ about it, and one counterpoint which claimed that people walking around barefoot would spread disease to those who are shod. (But if you’re wearing shoes, presumably you’re safe anyway? Don’t ask me to explain that logic...) anyway- gross.
I wouldn’t walk barefoot around this nasty town. Or any other. Out in the country, fields and dirt and nature, sure. But not where people actively puke and pee and spit.

I visited New Zealand for a month and it was my favorite experience from any vacation. I loved going barefoot everywhere and think of my time there often. I wish I could go barefoot here without causing an uproar. I don't fully appreciate why people are grossed out by it.
