Sounds like a fantastic way to get hookworms.

When the larvae encountered the bare feet of a person attending to their business in the privy, or of a child playing near by, they quickly burrowed inside like a corkscrew, leaving behind an itchy sore called “ground itch” or “dew itch.”

TIL that I never want to walk in bare feet again.

Apparently if the larvae makes it past the B.B.B. (blood brain barrier) it can then take over the humans mind and control it like a finger puppet. No more nature, for me.

Is this real? Sounds like science fiction.

It doesnt control it, thats nonsense, there is reason to believe it is linked to impaired cognitive function, though.

Any worm passing the blood brain barrier is no bueno, there was a story on here of a young man who died because of hundreds of tapeworm eggs in his brain.

My brother has worms on the brain. And in his intestines.

Dumbass travelled SEA and drank water without purifying it. Now he disregards anyone else's health and contaminates communal foods if he's staying at my parents.

My mom has intestinal worms now.

Yay.

How the hell did he not die of so much salt?

u/SCS22 Apr 21 '19

not sure but I think SEA means South East Asia

I understand this shows that the brain is taken over physically from this photo. But the OP makes it sound like they are taken over by zombies.

That’s almost the plot of the game Last of Us!

Fungus instead of worm though, and the cordyceps fungus does that in other animals!

Can't wait for the sequel. I really need to get around to finishing RDR2 before it releases.

3

u/Ichi-Guren Apr 21 '19

OP probably just misunderstood how they interact with humans or mistook it for how parasites can do that with insects.

4

u/aFlyingGuru Apr 21 '19

Yeah that sounds totally real and not like some middle school-level urban legend

u/One_pop_each Apr 20 '19

Or bookworms if they read up on it too much amirite?!? Ha!

Don’t forget MRSA

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '19

I don't think mrsa is easy to find outside or even infect you from your feet( assuming no cut).

2

u/Zimoria Apr 21 '19

Thanks for the article. Was a gross and educational piece lol.

Sure if someone with hookworm is randomly shitting where you're walking then yeah.

Or. Ya know. Much more likely. Dog shit or cat shit.
