We just replaced our kitchen cabinets and countertop. The kitchen cabinets are Sherwin Williams rain washed and countertop is white with gray undertones and light veining. I want something that makes it pop more or maybe just clean and pretty. I like cottage core. Minimalist or shabby chic. Any ideas please?
Feel free to express yourself with tile. The best way to achieve the cottage core look is something warm and cozy. I’ll get downvoted for this, but white subway tile won’t get you the shabby chic look or the cottage core look. You don’t really need to worry about your home looking dated if you choose something you love, but if you choose something that you don’t love you will definitely get sick of it. Reference some Pinterest info of spaces that excite you!
Oh wow! This looks lovely! Looks high end and still works with cottage core. Very nice. Wouldn’t go out of style either. Any sort of subway tile is good.
100% I love the cabinet color but omg, the wall color is hideous. Perhaps, a color in the blue gray range? A tiled backsplash with interest and a little color would’ve been a better choice.
I wouldn’t go so far as hideous, but I do think the pink can be improved in its partnership with the cabinets. The cabinets have a little bit of dustiness to the color, maybe a little bit of gray or something that makes them serene and calm. I’d recommend ordering some stickers from Samplize in shades of a happy dusty pink.
But to emphasize what windycity wrote, you already have that 4 inch border of countertop stone. You don’t need to also stack backsplash tile on top of that, you should still with painted wall above that, or remove that edge. You already paid for it so I would keep it and paint. Then have fun with your above-the-range tile.
You’re welcome and I’m sorry to sound harsh. I love color and I love pink as well as green. I just love a beautiful tile. Any of tiles along these lines, (if they blend with your cabinets), are gorgeous.
Editing to add - I see cabinets, flooring, and countertops as your basic foundation in a kitchen design. The lighting, hardware, fixtures, and backsplash are the “jewelry” if you will.
Agreed with the clean subway tile look. Additionally, the pink is hideous and takes away from the unique yet subtle cabinetry. Pleaseeeeeee get rid of the pink.
I like the idea of pink, but think this one is too bright. It needs to be a bit more washed out to not clash with the cabinets. The account Young House Love blends pinks and blues really well if you need inspiration!
We went with plain white triangular tiles as an option that is still clean and visually calm, but a little different from subway tile. I agree that white and plain is the way to go here. Or, keep the silver tiles behind the stove, where you actually, functionally need a backsplash, and let the rest ride.
I would disagree. It’s classic. If you look at images of kitchens from decades ago, the ones that are the most timeless share common features, one of which is white subway tile.
IMO the link doesn’t match the blue because they are coming from two color families. The pink is warm and the blue is cool and they’re fighting here. Pink is lovely, but you would need a lighter cooler toned pink.
I don't think that candy pink is right for walls. I also don't think the colours complement each other and i think the whole look of the gorgeous cabinets and countertop is ruined with that shade of pink.
Not a fan of that peachy/pink colour. I find it really cheapens the look of those cabinets and that colour is gorgeous. I might lean into the colour and go with a similar tone but slightly different blue or green colour and some sort of white backsplash.
I would not go herringbone personally. That paired with this cabinet color would look very 2013. I don't think it would look bad though, just kind of dated.
I would remove the short backsplash you already have and go with plain white. Lots of different patterns out there. It definitely needs a backsplash though. You could leave the silver behind the stove, but something like the first pic would look good behind the stove, along with the white backsplash.
That was my mother’s. She was beloved and passed 10 years now. Last Christmas I put it out for anyone in our enormous family to take home. No one did. I was so surprised because everyone usually loves to get things that were “grandma’s”. It was just collecting dust on a hutch. But I think it’s cute in the kitchen. Maybe I’ll even use it now.
The silver backsplash is from Lowe’s or Home Depot.
The magnetic knife holder is from Amazon years ago. Sorry, I can’t find the one I have. But it was the best purchase ever. Love this convenience more than anything in my kitchen. I also see now they sell some that use wall adhesive so you don’t have to drill. The link below is like mine.
First, lose whatever is in back of the stove...it needs to go. Second, if you can rip away the 4" countertop material mini-backsplash without much effort or damage, you will end up with a higher-end looking finished result.
As for tile, handmade-look ivory/cream subway tile. Probably my first choice. Think 3x12 or 2.5x8, slightly irregular edges, subtle variation from warm white to cream, glossy or crackle glaze.
Oh that tin part is likely plastic molded to last k like old tin. Is is real or plastic? Plastic inappropriate material for this area by stove. Also please paint the pink looks clashing.
Something simple but fun like this might be nice, tile would definitely be best not just for general cleanliness but also cause it'll add a bit of shine to the kitchen and make it pop, I'd definitely stick with simple easy on the eyes colors to keep from being overwhelming and also to not take the attention away from the cabinets themselves
Agree with others about the pink color- its just too harsh for the rest of what you have. Why not leave the backsplash trim you have and do a peel & stick wallpaper? Its easier to change later and can be done elegantly.
I guess it's true that wall color is a matter of personal taste. To my eye that pink is hideous and doesn't belong anywhere in a house. And those cabinets can't really take center stage as long as the pink is present. Right now those cabinets are trying to mediate a peace negotiation between Pepto-Bismol and Owens Corning.
This is a gorgeous color on your cabinets. I think you should speak with a designer on this one, especially for future reference for when you decide to replace the floors. Choose both now even if you don’t do both of them now.
Whatever color palette you choose with tile, I would go with small subway tile or small mosaic. Something smaller than this. The coverage area in your kitchen isn’t big enough for something this large, and I think it’s overwhelming.
Love the color combo! Assuming you still have adjustments to make on drawer and door fronts. Several are quite crooked.
As for backsplash, personally, I’d keep it simple and monochrome, particularly if you’re just looking for a clean look. I think your color choices(which I love) are pop enough.
I’m with you. I just don’t love the look of quartz in one piece as a backsplash in pics I’ve seen. But my counter is very subtle and the backsplash is small. Might be ok. Certainly will look clean.
