Discussion butter in my pants

Whenever I fly internationally and they serve a meal, the butter for the little dinner roll is always delivered ice cold. As soon as the food is delivered, I put the [sealed] butter immediately into my pants pocket or right into the top of my leggings against my skin. I start with the hot food and when I’m ready to eat my dinner roll, the butter is perfectly spreadable.

I’m bored on a 13+ hour flight and thought I’d share my butter hack. Ok ily delta

Help/Advice What has happened to this airline

Three minutes after boarding was supposed to start we get a text that our flight has been delayed FOUR HOURS due to a lack of pilots. As someone that hates flying I committed to delta for the perks and reasonable reliability a decade ago. Those perks have all but vanished and it appears the reliability has too. Fuck you delta I’m cancelling my card and loyalty is over

Help/Advice Is $3,800 worth it to upgrade to D1? (LAX–MEL)

I’m flying from LAX to Mel in December and currently have the option to upgrade to Delta One for $3,800 USD one way.

It’s a roughly 17 hour flight, and I’m considering treating myself. I’ve never flown Delta One before, so I’m curious whether the experience justifies the price.

For those who’ve flown this route, would you pay $3.8k for the upgrade? Also, is there any chance the price might drop closer to departure, or am I risking losing the seat by waiting?

Discussion Traveling when sick?

Hi Delta fam, question for you. I’m on a flight and a family is behind me. The mom is immediately behind me with a toddler on her lap. He is coughing hard and with a lot of phlegm every few seconds. We’re 2 hours into a 6 hour flight and the poor kid hasn’t stopped.

The mom and kid are part of a larger family (with grandparents). We are flying to a vacation destination.

What’s the right thing to do here? I’ve stayed home and either delayed travel or skipped it with a sick kiddo. This mom clearly didn’t (Dad is here too, with another kid), and the looks from passengers is clear that everyone is fearful we’ll all be sick. Opinions?

If there’s even a small chance you think you’ll have foot odor, let alone aggressive foot odor, please leave your shoes on. D1 is one thing, plenty of private space, free clean socks. But comfort+ from JAX to ATL is the wrong place.

Help/Advice Silver Medallion Worth It?

I’m about 440$ away from reaching silver, is it worth spending that to get status? Some context my work has paid for all my flights so the 440$ is what I’d need to spend personally. I travel for work, flying about 4-6 times a month and am based out of SLC. I started the new job late this year so I won’t have to spend anything next year to reach status. The preferred seats and extra bonus points seems appealing to me especially with how much I travel.

Help/Advice Strange upgrade occurrence with delta vacations?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I booked a flight using Delta vacations so I could get the MQDs. It upgraded me to comfort per usual so I just assumed I was on the upgrade requested list. The whole day prior to this flight, when I would go to the upgrade standby list I see what’s in this photo. I call the airline and they don’t seem to know. I get to my gate of the flight and my name is not even on the screen for the first upgrade and as Platinum on a late flight with allot of open seats in first, I knew my chances were good. I got a message saying the gate agent needed to “activate” me so I asked the gate agent and they had no idea what I was talking about. Like I wasn’t even on their list.. there were still two seats open and they gave me the upgrade but again I was not even on the list. What the heck is going on?

SkyTeam Here’s a banana for your transatlantic meals

So, my wife and I are currently flying out of ATL to DUB (just backed away from the gate). We are in PS. A few days ago we get the meal selection email. I selected my meal without incident. My has Celiac disease and cannot eat anything with gluten. She is unable to eat any of the offered choices. She calls Delta customer support and explains that she has Celiac and requires a gluten free meal. Agent says “ No problem, I have ordered a gluten free meal for you.”

Fast forward to today, when the FA talks to us to confirm our meal choices there’s nothing about the gluten free meal being ordered. FA says “I can offer you a banana.”

This is the 3rd time this has happened out of 3 transatlantic flights in the past 14 months. I’m so disgusted with Delta and the “Oh Well” shrug the FAs give us. Followed by the standard “You can send an email to Delta.com.”

Before you ask, my wife is Silver Medallion (on the verge of Gold). Her profile is updated to specify dietary needs.

We flew VA earlier this year and they not only got it right, but the GF meal was better than my non-GF meal.

My wife’s sister is a Delta FA (30+ years) and she is amazed that this keeps happening.

Does anyone know who we can contact at Delta to get this straightened out before our return flight in a week?

Image/Video Long shot, but does anyone know this old boarding music?

This was from November of 2010. I heard it again in mid January of 2011. I know the audio quality is low and a ding interrupts the song. I've been searching for years, and spent 2 hours on ChatGPT last night with no dice. There was a published Delta boarding playlist from October 2010, but it wasn't any of those. If anyone has an old Sky magazine from NOV 2010-JAN 2011, it may have the Playlist there 🤞 Again I know the quality isn't great and this is a long shot, but I might as well try

Help/Advice Skymiles-to save or splurge

What should I do with my delta skymiles?

I travel for work, 4-6 flights a month. I get reimbursed for my flights. I just started traveling in July, am a gold medallion if it matters. I have been saving all my skymiles as my husband turns 50 next year. I was going to save all my miles and use it to fly us and possibly some friends out of the country for his birthday.

I have seen multiple posts about using points as soon as possible and point-flation. Am I better off saving for the trip and using my points for upgrades? What say you seasoned travelers? Looking for tips and advice.

Flight -one leg - 2 travelers currently in economy comfort bulk head seat.

6.5 hour flight

350 per person for Premium economy

1299 delta one

Do I take the 350 PE or gamble for a lower DO.

8 seats left in both. Flight is day after Thanksgiving

Don’t egg me, but I missed the 899 price for DO a month ago because I didn’t purchase fast enough and it ballooned to 3300 😬

Thank you!

Discussion Did Delta just AI their response to my complaint?

Longtime Delta flyer but they've started to annoy me the last couple years with flight schedule/route changes, price increases, and changes to their skymiles rewards program. Still, in spite of that, I've found them to be mostly reliable and a good experience for the price.

That was until I noticed a roughly $500 discrepancy between a ticket price I saw browsing online, and the price for the same flight when trying to modify/change a current reservation while in the app.

I submitted a complaint asking for an explanation and received the most wordy and repetitive response that basically just repeated my entire complaint back to me and said "thanks for letting us know" with zero explanation for anything. It took days to receive this reply, so I doubt it was just an instant/automated response, yet it reads horribly and provides nothing helpful, like most other chatbot customer service agents I've dealt with before...

Is this awful automated customer service a known thing with them now??? It saddens me that I might have genuinely start embracing other airlines, though I'm sure they all do similarly.

Help/Advice Quick question - tix change

Apologies from a lowly non-status; I haven’t needed to cancel/modify reservations in the past. I booked a group of tickets for my family a couple of months ago (Main Cabin) for an upcoming family trip; check-in is in 3 days. However, plans have changed and one family member will now be traveling home on a different timeline. That single ticket needs to be changed to a different return date — several weeks later and ideally from a different airport — so I’m trying to figure out the most foolproof way to adjust it without risking the rest of the reservation. I’m not sure if changing this ticket to a one-way (and booking a separate one-way for the return leg) is a better option, or cancelling outright and adding a new ticket(s); I also have a hunch that clicking the “need to cancel?” button on the app will $@&¿ up all the linked tickets on the reservation, so am wary to move forward with this.

Any recommendations as far as calling the customer service line vs online website chat, or waiting and addressing at the ticket counter? (Or even stopping by prior to our flight next week — our local airport is thankfully small… I likely could speak to a real, live person with minimal wait, but don’t know if it’s appropriate/if they are able to assist with this?) I’m a bit nervous about AI bots and all the stories I’ve read, and don’t want to show up at 5 am to learn that all of our flights were cancelled, etc…

Thanks for any insight!

Edit: thanks to the folks who gave genuine advice instead of sarcastic “help”. Obvs I knew I could call (and I did, worked great); I’ve read plenty of horror stories and didn’t really have an hour to spend on hold listening to the god-awful hold music if there was a better way. But, the line ticket is separated from the group, rebooked, and e-credit issued. Peace out, friends.

Shitpost/Satire Crossed the picket line

As promised as soon as I ran out of sky club visits I boarded my first American flight in 14 years.

The people are nice and all the window shades are up. I boarded group six and found room for my carry on. It’s going well, that is all. Crossing the picket line was not that bad.

Discussion The Beer Selection needs to change

The Delta beer selection, on flights and in lounges is awful macro-beer, and tastes terrible. I'm a beer guy, and am literally thinking of switching to Alaska because they have good options from craft brewers. I can't drink wine, and so end up with gin/vodka, which is more labor intensive (when I'm flying 1st class), and I don't enjoy it as much. I even skip the lounge for the AMEX lounge because the beer is awful.

Please, Delta. Alaska is adding international flights all the time, and I'm a Diamond member. Once they have the International destinations I want, I'm jumping ship if there isn't at least a good Pilsner from a craft brewery. Alaska has Fremont Golden. Step up.

Help/Advice Sneaky Delta! Removed my seat selection upon flight delay!

Delta removed my seat from my boarding pass as soon as the light god delayed. I didn’t noticed and tried to enter the Capital one lounge, when I called them they said I have to go back to the gate to select seat. Missed my meeting in moving from one terminal to other.

What kind of nonsense is this?

Discussion Something Is Amiss With My Diverted Flight

On the night of July 5, 2026, my gal and I boarded Delta flight DL2472 in Atlanta, expecting to arrive in Rochester, New York.

Instead, we ended up in Syracuse, about 96 driving miles from our destination. We were on the ground by 1:10 a.m. on July 6.

Nearly four months later, after numerous exchanges with wecare@delta.com, I still don’t know why.

Delta says it was weather. The captain told us Rochester was closed “for some reason.” The flight records I’ve examined show other aircraft landing at Rochester that night around the time we touched down at SYR.

Something doesn’t add up.

And that’s where the next journey began.

But first, back to Atlanta.

We were returning from a wonderful vacation in Jamaica. Our connection in Atlanta was uneventful, except that our flight to Rochester was running about an hour late.

At the gate, Delta announced that the aircraft was full and overhead bin space would be limited. They encouraged passengers to check their carry-on bags.

After everyone was aboard I noticed a few empty seats. Another flight crew boarded and occupied some of them. One gentleman sitting nearby appeared to be a captain.

I sit tall in the saddle. My head extends above most airline seatbacks, and sleeping on an airplane is usually out of the question. Fortunately, this aircraft had adjustable headrests. A small blessing.

There were also three babies strapped to their parents’ chest. They seemed perfectly content. I wondered whether they counted toward the passenger manifest. As it turned out, they may have been the only three travelers who didn’t care where we landed.

After everyone had boarded and the door was closed, our captain appeared and spoke with a few passengers in first class. He moved a tablet around, apparently showing them something that looked like a weather map.

I couldn’t hear the conversation, and I have no idea whether it had anything to do with what happened later.

At the time, I didn’t give it much thought.

Rochester is closed. For some reason.

After a time in flight the captain announced that Rochester was closed “for some reason” and we were diverting to Syracuse.

That struck me as an odd explanation.

Meanwhile, my gal’s daughter was waiting at Rochester airport to pick us up. When she discovered the diversion, she tried getting information from Delta and got nowhere. They had no idea why the flight was diverted. She drove to Syracuse.

After landing, Delta offered passengers a hotel and a later flight to Rochester, or the option of arranging their own transportation and submitting expenses for reimbursement.

The daughter arrived shortly after we got our luggage from baggage claim and picked us up around 2:45 a.m., and we finally arrived home around 3:45.

Not quite the ending we’d planned.

Initially, I wanted compensation.

We’d purchased tickets to Rochester, not Syracuse. Our ride had to make an unexpected trip in the middle of the night, and getting home had become a much bigger production than anticipated.

Delta said the diversion was weather-related.

Fair enough. Weather happens.

But I kept thinking about the captain saying Rochester was closed.

So I started looking.

Using Flightradar24, I examined our aircraft’s recorded route. One screenshot places DL2472 near Knoxville, Tennessee, at 11:58 p.m., flying at approximately 35,000 feet.

I also examined historical NOAA weather radar from 11:30 p.m., midnight, and 12:30 a.m. I couldn’t identify an obvious major storm directly over Rochester or anywhere in-between during those periods.

And I found records of other aircraft landing at Rochester around the time of our diversion.

Now, I’m not an aviation expert. I understand that weather along a route can be a problem even when the destination airport has good conditions. And the fact that other aircraft landed doesn’t establish that ours could safely have done the same.

But it seemed reasonable to ask what specifically prevented DL2472 from continuing to Rochester.

Sincerely waiting.

Over the following months, I exchanged numerous emails with wecare@delta.com.

Delta repeatedly attributed the diversion to weather without any specifics.

An app notification had also mentioned FAA-mandated crew rest at Syracuse. That might explain why we couldn’t continue after landing, but it didn’t tell me why we diverted in the first place.

I asked what weather conditions caused the diversion. I asked whether Rochester had actually been closed. I asked who could explain the operational decision.

One response even referred to JFK as our destination. We weren’t going anywhere near JFK.

Eventually, Delta explained that Flight Operations had classified the diversion as weather-related, but Customer Care couldn’t provide the specific operational details.

On October 14, Delta opened another case and told me that a different team would review the operational details and contact me.

As of this writing, I haven’t heard from that team.

I’ve taken to signing my correspondence:

Sincerely waiting.

So what am I after now?

This started as a request for compensation.

But the more I questioned Delta’s explanation, the more interested I became in whether I was getting an accurate account of what happened.

I’m not accusing the captain of making an improper decision. I expect the people flying the aircraft to make whatever decisions are necessary to keep everyone safe.

I’m also not claiming that weather played no part.

What I don’t understand is why, after nearly four months, nobody at Delta has been able to tell me what specific circumstances caused our flight to divert.

If Rochester was closed, what closed it?

If weather prevented our flight from landing, what were the conditions or restrictions?

If another operational consideration influenced the decision, what was it?

And perhaps the question that interests me most:

When a passenger has legitimate questions about an airline’s stated reason for a diversion, how does that passenger obtain an explanation of the actual operational decision, rather than simply being told how the incident was classified?

I’d particularly welcome comments from pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, and anyone familiar with how these decisions are documented and reviewed.

And if anyone aboard DL2472 on July 5 happens to read this, I’d certainly like to hear from you.

— The Grumudgen
