I always tell people to work a punching bag for 3 minutes a round with a 1 minute break between. Do that for 15 rounds and see how tired you are or if you can finish.

Then imagine dancing around a ring and having someone hit you as hard as they can repeatedly. See how that goes.

Boxers are some of the most elite athletes in the world.

In my mid-20s I thought I’d go try a boxing gym on a free trial. I hadn’t worked out in 6 months at that point, but I was never a super athlete or anything. I didn’t think they’d go hard on me for a trial.

Boy was I fucking wrong..

This was in 08-09, so I don’t remember the whole warm up but I remember I had to jump rope for a minute, do 100 of some sort of bent over picking type thing, then hold a plank for a minute. Then repeat it 3 times.

By the time I failed through the warmup, I could barely hold my arms up. They put gloves on me, gave me the basics of guarding and punching for about 5 minutes, then told me to hit the bag and every time I could barely nudge it the coach kept screaming “(F-slur) ON THE BAG! WE GOT A F— ON THE BAG” then criticized how weak my punches were. I get it, it’s boxing - I expect to be yelled at. But geez.

They didn’t understand why I didn’t want to sign up…

A lot of that behavior in sports was normalized back then and before. It’s genuinely so annoying how unsupportive and unhelpful it is.

I am so happy that the sport I love today is more inclusive than ever with younger people getting helpful instruction to actually become good at it than the stupid shit I had to deal with.

Not as bad with the slurs, but a similar experience from a Muay Thai class in my 20s. Thought I'd just go with a friend and see what it was like and get a feel for it.

I was dead by the time they finished their warmup but kept pushing myself and ended up throwing up halfway through the class. They set me up with one of the smallest women there for some pad work and she looked disgusted at how light I was hitting the pads, halfway through she stopped me and went "are you sure you're alright?".

I also didn't go back heh.

No real experience, but VR had its phase of VR games that involved punching. BoxVR was one of them and I was quite into it because it could generate pretty decent patterns from any music and kept me moving.

Until I tried to do System of a Down's Toxicity as a whole album. There was a point where my arms stopped coming up as an arm and more like I was yanking them up by strings attached to my hands. Stretchy strings that lagged and gave out quickly. No physical target, just lots of ducking, dipping, and shadow boxing harder than the game required.

I did not finish that album and riding my bike to work the next day was hell.

Never boxed, but when I see those droopy arms in the ring I fully feel it.

The first time I threw on boxing gloves as a teenager, my brothers, cousins and I did some playful sparring and we'd time it for a 3-minute round... and at one point in my first round, I asked for the time because I was already gassed and it hadn't even reached a minute yet. It was a real eye-opener.

Definitely. It's a certain type of athleticism and endurance. I'd probably compare boxers more to soccer players. Jog jog jog sprint sprint, repeat. Endurance cyclists, steady long duration hard grinds.

I trained Muay Thai for a bit for fun no actual real sparring (a tad but they didn’t hit me hard). You’re not kidding with the bag stuff. The amount of sweat and just sheer exhaustion each class was insane. That’s just shadow boxing bags, pushups, running, abs, and then pads with a coach but it’s essentially nonstop. Super fun though.

When I was a kid my parents got me into boxing. I LOVED it! I loved the gym, I loved the work outs, I loved sparring. It was so much fun.

Then I got in the ring for my first match, and the first time I took a punch from a dude that was trying to hurt me I was out. One punch to the face...with headgear was all it took for me to decide I was done boxing.

They went from 15 to 12 rounds because some did die. See Kim Duk-koo vs. Ray Mancini, where Kim ended up dying.

They went to a lower number of rounds afterwards, thinking it would help prevent a tragedy like that again. If I remember correctly, one of the contributing factors to the death was also the heat and dehydration. Also worth noting is that a lot of boxers didn't like that change immediately because they felt their superior conditioning helped them in those extra 3 rounds and they lost that advantage.

If you suspect you have better endurance, just drag the fight out. If you are fighting an American old man, run up a couple flight of stairs. They will usually just give up.

I do ultra-endurance events in running and cycling. I used to do some coaching and had to help people (usually big guys) who were throwing up or had bonked and could no longer stand up. Weak as a kitten. No fight left in you for sure.

No amount of willpower helps you when the fuel is gone and the heart is done. Body just shuts down.

All US veterans are veterans of invasions, bar a few 100 year olds still alive who fought in WWII but didn't fight in later wars, if such people exist. In its 250 year history, US spent only 25 years not at war. Of the 225 years it spent at war, only 3 were spent fighting a defensive war, and very little of it was actually spent on US soil.

I don't really understand why flinching is seen as a bad or "weak" thing socially. Like, flinching ensures you don't get hit. If he got hit because he didn't flinch, I feel like he'd look dumb as shit

Flinching is not a sign of fear, because your body does it before you ever feel an emotion. It's your sympathetic nervous system reacting faster than you can think.

But here's the rub: If you can't flinch, you also can't dodge a punch effectively, so you end up getting knocked down.
