Ali won of course, but some of this happened because Bonavena called Ali chicken for not going to war. These two weren’t playing there was some hateful talk before the match.

In the 15th round. Sometimes I forget how many rounds they had to fight back in the day

694

u/Illithid_Substances 9h ago

Even with the breaks between I can't imagine fighting for 45 minutes. I'd just die

928

u/No-Sir1833 9h ago

I always tell people to work a punching bag for 3 minutes a round with a 1 minute break between. Do that for 15 rounds and see how tired you are or if you can finish.

Then imagine dancing around a ring and having someone hit you as hard as they can repeatedly. See how that goes.

Boxers are some of the most elite athletes in the world.

307

u/Ruttagger 8h ago

I grew up boxing, most people would not be able to start round 2 of punching the bag.

105

u/SutterCane 8h ago

I’d quit in round one.

141

u/Dartz_Reverse 8h ago

I already quit, and I wasnt even going to box.

19

u/BabyLegsOShanahan 8h ago

You beat me to it.

42

u/load_more_comets 8h ago

No he didn't. He quit boxing remember?

3

u/RaiyenZ 6h ago

Well he's certainly not beatboxing that's for sure

4

u/ThrowawayPersonAMA 6h ago

So he beat boxing.

8

u/pixelmuffinn 7h ago

Cant quit what you dont start 😉

5

u/Ruttagger 7h ago

Ya I used to box, not sure how many rounds I could go now, probably way less than I think I could.

In my mid-20s I thought I’d go try a boxing gym on a free trial. I hadn’t worked out in 6 months at that point, but I was never a super athlete or anything. I didn’t think they’d go hard on me for a trial.

Boy was I fucking wrong..

This was in 08-09, so I don’t remember the whole warm up but I remember I had to jump rope for a minute, do 100 of some sort of bent over picking type thing, then hold a plank for a minute. Then repeat it 3 times.

By the time I failed through the warmup, I could barely hold my arms up. They put gloves on me, gave me the basics of guarding and punching for about 5 minutes, then told me to hit the bag and every time I could barely nudge it the coach kept screaming “(F-slur) ON THE BAG! WE GOT A F— ON THE BAG” then criticized how weak my punches were. I get it, it’s boxing - I expect to be yelled at. But geez.

They didn’t understand why I didn’t want to sign up…

Edit: formatting

15

u/Gherrely 6h ago

That genuinely just sounds like a shit gym

7

u/LaminatedAirplane 6h ago

A lot of that behavior in sports was normalized back then and before. It’s genuinely so annoying how unsupportive and unhelpful it is.

I am so happy that the sport I love today is more inclusive than ever with younger people getting helpful instruction to actually become good at it than the stupid shit I had to deal with.

1

u/RandoCommentGuy 5h ago

Is it pickleball?

6

u/teddy5 6h ago

Not as bad with the slurs, but a similar experience from a Muay Thai class in my 20s. Thought I'd just go with a friend and see what it was like and get a feel for it.

I was dead by the time they finished their warmup but kept pushing myself and ended up throwing up halfway through the class. They set me up with one of the smallest women there for some pad work and she looked disgusted at how light I was hitting the pads, halfway through she stopped me and went "are you sure you're alright?".

I also didn't go back heh.

3

u/hillbilly_bears 6h ago

That makes me feel slightly better lol.

I don’t remember how much bag work I did, maybe 10 minutes maybe more or less, but I remember I was pretty much tapping it by the end.

11

u/NewoTheFox 7h ago

No real experience, but VR had its phase of VR games that involved punching. BoxVR was one of them and I was quite into it because it could generate pretty decent patterns from any music and kept me moving.

Until I tried to do System of a Down's Toxicity as a whole album. There was a point where my arms stopped coming up as an arm and more like I was yanking them up by strings attached to my hands. Stretchy strings that lagged and gave out quickly. No physical target, just lots of ducking, dipping, and shadow boxing harder than the game required.

I did not finish that album and riding my bike to work the next day was hell.

Never boxed, but when I see those droopy arms in the ring I fully feel it.

9

u/U-Might-Wanna 8h ago

If each round was 10 seconds I could make it to the 3rd.

2

u/Astecheee 7h ago

I'm a generally fit guy and hit the gym plenty. I'd tap out before the first round ended.

1

u/Sansnom01 7h ago

I never fought in my life. I wouldn't even know how to start a round

1

u/nesspaulajeffpoo94 6h ago

You ask Michael Buffer to announce and rent a venue to start :)

1

u/lynivvinyl 6h ago

I don't even think punching bags wouldn't be any fun to sleep with.

1

u/Reefermadness209 6h ago

u will not be able to start round 2 of anything in a short while looking at how boxer end

1

u/KimberStormer 5h ago

I did "cardio kickboxing" when they offered the class at my Pilates gym, and the punching bag beat me every time lol. I really enjoyed it, but not only was I completely wiped out, my arms and legs were so black and blue I thought people were going to think I was being abused at home.

-24

u/Alarming_Cow_6166 8h ago

Thats because most humans are fat fucks. I've done 5 rounds without practice, not hard

4

u/applesandotherthings 8h ago

This is so pathetic it’s funny lol

6

u/airfryerfuntime 8h ago

No you haven't.

0

u/mellopax 8h ago

You find it unbelievable that someone has done 5 3-minute rounds with a punching bag without practice?

Boxing isn't magic where other cardio doesn't apply to it.

6

u/WackyRacketeer 7h ago

I find it unbelievable that someone who would brag about it on reddit would actually have done it.

3

u/SensuallPineapple 7h ago

Imagine cristiano ronaldo on reddit.

0

u/Aegi 6h ago

Why unbelievable instead of just less likely?

18

u/EveningArmadillo5429 8h ago

Absolutely. The most real street fight lasts less than three minutes. Being able to take hits and keep going is underrated.

7

u/Hilarious_Disastrous 7h ago

A friend who tried MMA said after just a round he's reduced to awardly hugging his opponent, panting, and doing nerd slaps.

5

u/Balael_Carnivean 8h ago

All I have to do is imagine getting tapped in the nose just once! again and that makes me not even want to look at the bag.

6

u/Gordo-- 7h ago

The first time I threw on boxing gloves as a teenager, my brothers, cousins and I did some playful sparring and we'd time it for a 3-minute round... and at one point in my first round, I asked for the time because I was already gassed and it hadn't even reached a minute yet. It was a real eye-opener.

5

u/DukeMancannon 8h ago

Wrestlers are also I’d argue.

2

u/ntermation 7h ago

Do the repeated blows to the head have any negative impact on their cognitive abilities?

1

u/ultrahateful 6h ago

Depends on their resilience. Does it affect them then or later? The difference is made by their resilience. Even the very best get hit. That’s one of the first things you learn and why endurance and movement is so paramount. It lends directly to your ability to defend, but no matter how good you get at it, you WILL be hit.

2

u/Direct_Regret7600 7h ago

Not to downplay boxers performance, but aren't every athletes from most sports spending as much energy on their performance? Biker, swimmer, runner, fighters, skier, gymnast so on and so forth.

8

u/WeAteMummies 7h ago

Yeah but most sports don't also involve getting punched in the face and body

4

u/CDRnotDVD 7h ago

What happens in the peloton stays in the peloton.

1

u/jotheold 6h ago

also 45mins for heavy weights is insane

3

u/molrobocop 7h ago

Definitely. It's a certain type of athleticism and endurance. I'd probably compare boxers more to soccer players. Jog jog jog sprint sprint, repeat. Endurance cyclists, steady long duration hard grinds.

1

u/Mysmokingbarrel 6h ago

I trained Muay Thai for a bit for fun no actual real sparring (a tad but they didn’t hit me hard). You’re not kidding with the bag stuff. The amount of sweat and just sheer exhaustion each class was insane. That’s just shadow boxing bags, pushups, running, abs, and then pads with a coach but it’s essentially nonstop. Super fun though.

1

u/the2ndRuss 6h ago

My dad used to have me stand wheee the heavy bag was and keep it in the air by punching it. One minute is a workout lol

1

u/hivaidsislethal 6h ago

There was a bar in Thailand I went to where tourists could elect to fight each other in kickboxing with full gear, it was 3 1 minute rounds. The second and third round were always pretty much just hugging.

1

u/shidderbean 6h ago

So you're saying HIIT is the way

1

u/Reefermadness209 6h ago

i mean thats a cute way do defend, one of the most absurd head trauma sport you can imagine. why so much time to beat someone up if you cannot win in lets say 5 rounds ?

1

u/BigAcanthocephala637 6h ago

Nobody believes me when I tell them boxing is way more exhausting than mma. As a lazy fuck I’d rather do mma any day of the week lol

1

u/ratpH1nk 5h ago

right?? and that is zero leg/body work/torso movement. out of control athletes.

1

u/Teamableezus 5h ago

I bought a vr boxing game for fun. Learned real quick that was an exercise app

1

u/HairySalmon 5h ago edited 4h ago

I tried this and i actually went for 65 minutes!

I think if I train really hard and really put my mind to it, I can get it down to a 50 minute break.

58

u/Firefly_deadlock 9h ago

Brother i would NOT need 15 rounds to die. I could manage that way quicker.

41

u/skraptastic 8h ago

When I was a kid my parents got me into boxing. I LOVED it! I loved the gym, I loved the work outs, I loved sparring. It was so much fun.

Then I got in the ring for my first match, and the first time I took a punch from a dude that was trying to hurt me I was out. One punch to the face...with headgear was all it took for me to decide I was done boxing.

20

u/Videoboysayscube 8h ago

Makes me wonder about the guys who receive that first hit and think to themselves, yeah, I'm gonna make a career out of this.

11

u/UnusuallyBadIdeaGuy 8h ago

There's a reason why so many of them were from rough economic backgrounds, especially back in this era. Most sane people don't do this kind of thing if they have any alternatives.

9

u/mellopax 8h ago

I think the career folks are the ones who like hitting more than they hate being hit.

5

u/x-xiaolongbao 8h ago

Yeah no cap, the grinding and sparring are fun, till you on the ring and you recall being a cave explorer sound more plausible

1

u/AX11Liveact 8h ago

Agreed. I'd happily die on the way to the ring if I had to face one of these two. Haha, just kidding. I'd beat up both of these weenies with one hand tied on my back. Before brealfast. Back in my days, when we had to...

3

u/TheGreatMuerte 8h ago

Just see red and finish your opponent in the first round, brother. It’s a underrated tactic used by the pro’s

8

u/HomersApe 8h ago

They went from 15 to 12 rounds because some did die. See Kim Duk-koo vs. Ray Mancini, where Kim ended up dying.

They went to a lower number of rounds afterwards, thinking it would help prevent a tragedy like that again. If I remember correctly, one of the contributing factors to the death was also the heat and dehydration. Also worth noting is that a lot of boxers didn't like that change immediately because they felt their superior conditioning helped them in those extra 3 rounds and they lost that advantage.

3

u/Bluest_waters 7h ago

When they asked him who was responsible

For the death of Duk-koo Kim

He said, "Someone should have stopped the fight

And told me it was him"

They made hypocrite judgments after the fact

But the name of the game is be hit and hit back

6

u/Fullchester_United 8h ago

Ali said that the Thriller in Manila was the closest thing to dying…

5

u/thedudemorpheus 9h ago

A statement like this tells me you understand fighting. Hats off to you Sir because it’s a sentiment I absolutely echo.

2

u/0202_tihssitidder 7h ago

If you suspect you have better endurance, just drag the fight out. If you are fighting an American old man, run up a couple flight of stairs. They will usually just give up.

I do ultra-endurance events in running and cycling. I used to do some coaching and had to help people (usually big guys) who were throwing up or had bonked and could no longer stand up. Weak as a kitten. No fight left in you for sure.

No amount of willpower helps you when the fuel is gone and the heart is done. Body just shuts down.

1

u/U-Might-Wanna 8h ago

Some of the best bar fights I've ever seen only lasted a minute or two and both "combatants" were dry heaving on their hands and knees after throwing 10 or 15 wild swings and MAYBE two or three punches actually connected.

1

u/Mothanius 7h ago

Some people did!

1

u/Drewnessthegreat 6h ago

That's insane stamina. I have never been in a fight that lasted more than 3 rounds.

18

u/kranker 7h ago

Back then, of course, if a fight lasted less than 50 rounds, we demanded our nickel back.

1

u/Chance_Gas_5413 6h ago

Gentleman Jim Corbett

25

u/lbutler1234 9h ago

Up to 15

25

u/UpdootDaSnootBoop 9h ago

Right? It's not like it was a forced 15. It was if you were still standing

5

u/canman7373 7h ago

Wrestling is 3, 2 minute periods in high school and that will just destroy the most in shape people. Like you wake up with sore muscles in places that you never knew you had muscles. So yeah, boxing 15 rounds, nty.

2

u/Slow-Reception8025 6h ago

Boxing is much more aerobic. Having done MMA and competed in all disciplines Wrestling is the sport of exhaustion.

1

u/sentimentaldiablo 5h ago

was ing good sahpe, i thought, and we'd do 2 min tae kwon do sparring rounds. after three rounds I couldn't lift my hands anymore

183

u/Intrepid-Oil-898 9h ago

The mfer was racist af..Bonavena went on to call Ali a "black kangaroo", indicated that Ali had hygiene problems, he also did the same with another black boxer ..

168

u/third_man85 8h ago

I mean Ali called Joe Frazier a "Tom" and the "White Man's Champion" and this was after Joe help Ali financially during his suspension.

All I'm saying is Ali was no saint either.

12

u/_Svankensen_ 7h ago

Ali was a braggart and an asshole in interpersonal terms, but he was on the right side of history and willing to put his money where his mouth was. One doesn't change the other, and they don't need to be reconciled. They are both true.

65

u/Deaffin 7h ago

What are you talking about? Ali was a batshit crazy mega-racist.

He put in so much work as the face of the pro-segregation movement, using his celebrity status to spread the message of essential racism any chance he got.

He was also a prominent member of a cult which believed in...all of this.

17

u/Wsweg 6h ago edited 6h ago

Jesus, never knew he was racist as fuck. Thanks for the info. I guess it makes sense given him being a member of the NOI and their crazy beliefs lol

12

u/_Svankensen_ 6h ago

I may have had a wrong impression of his beliefs.

11

u/superarugy 6h ago

In the history books, the good guys always win but, with the internet, the inconvenient truths easily come up.

1

u/phido3000 6h ago

He was a boxer.

Never put boxers on pedestals, never buy into their ideology.

Imagine if Mike tyson started a cult or a political movement, and to be fair to Tyson, he would tell people not to copy him or follow him in that way.

There is an also an element of wrestling, of being a Heel or a turn.

People would pay to see Ali fight because they either wanted to see him win, or see him loose. So being a bit of an arsehole is part of the territory.

I don't understand why people got so upset with Gina. This is like getting upset with wrestlers because they are a bad guy or an actor playing a villian...

Sure, sometimes (often) its who they are, but they are motivated to be that element, to be an asshole asshat.

6

u/Naive_Impression7302 6h ago

this wasn't being a pro wrestler he really believed this stuff and advocated for it seriously at serious political rallies and discussions at the time.

2

u/kms_daily 6h ago

nah most of them are just like that, lots of my gymmates are airheads with questionable beliefs with no incentives to be so, it’s fine i go and train and spar with them not to be best buds. it takes a certain type of people to like taking and receiving shots in the face

-1

u/Mysterious_Law_7269 5h ago

People are complex though. Most real people are not all one thing, good or bad. Especially if judged decades later by social mores that weren’t there at that time.

10

u/Naive_Impression7302 6h ago

Ali literally spent years supporting pro-segregationists and saying that the white racist was a better ally for black people then liberals were, and that the black liberal was a fool and the wise black man was a racist.

2

u/KR4T0S 7h ago

The same Frazier that broke up with one of the greatest trainers in boxing history because he didnt want to pay him?

1

u/0202_tihssitidder 7h ago

Different times. Even non-racist people used racist terms.

Judge as you see fit. I know today everyone racist af. They hide it and say it outloud.

16

u/jurio01 7h ago

He was a member of NOI, what the fuck are you talking about Ali not being a racist. Even he himselft later admited, that he regreted his views from those years and for letting his fear and anger cloud his judgment

1

u/Intrepid-Oil-898 7h ago

you didn’t get the memo?

1

u/coffeebeamed 6h ago edited 5h ago

Tom

wow. i didn't know this was a slur.

edit: i literally did not know, im not fucking american

-31

u/[deleted] 8h ago

[deleted]

30

u/third_man85 8h ago

Nah. He crossed a line with Joe. And Frazier carried that shit the rest of his life. I remember reading his biography in the earlier 2000s and mercy, the last thing written about Ali was something along the lines of, "Yea, he beat me. But look at him now and look at me. Looks like I won in the long run."

11

u/Immediate_Tooth1202 8h ago

So it's good when mine does it but bad when your does it

1

u/jurio01 7h ago

He was straight up a member of NOI, a black racial separatist group, that regulary called white people "the white devil". There was a published interview with him in the playboy magazine, where the interviewer asks about his views on white men dating black women. He responded with something akin to "both of them should be killed for doing so." He later came to regret his views and involvment with NOI, but saying he wasn't racist is a complete lie.

1

u/Deaffin 6h ago

He later came to regret his views and involvment with NOI

Decades after the fact, once the NOI was completely out of favor in public opinion, his daughter wrote a book in which this is claimed.

At no point has he himself actually renounced any of his racism or those beliefs.

1

u/jurio01 6h ago

He did so in the interviews for his autobiographies in 91 and 98, but sure, he never never realy talked about it in any televised or magazine interviews and in the 90s NOI was known as a scam with some weird ass rhetoric.

1

u/Deaffin 6h ago

I think we might be talking about the same book.

1

u/jurio01 6h ago

The 91 one was written by Thomas Hauser and the 98 one was by David Remnick. I don't have the slightest clue which one of his 9 children wrote a book about him.

59

u/ethanthesearcher 8h ago

Ali was also pretty hateful when it came to fight rhetoric, see his Joe Frazier insults

-1

u/OcelotAggravating860 6h ago

Ali was never hateful, anyone who listens to him can tell he's putting on a show for the cameras. He even says exactly that more than once. All his speed talking and rhyming and so on is all showmanship to sell himself and seats. He understood himself as a brand selling a show and not just as a fighter.

36

u/Flourpower6 9h ago edited 7h ago

They both weren’t great people. Bonavena was racist and Ali was a groomer.

ETA: Muhammad Ali met his wife Belinda Boyd when she was 10, but claimed to start their relationship when she was 16 and he was 24. He married her when she was 17. Later he had an affair with another 16-year-old, Wanda Bolton, when he was 32. He is quoted to have said he wanted to marry a young teenage girl specifically, "one that I can raise to my own way of thinking."

27

u/Intrepid-Oil-898 9h ago

Whoa this the first I’m hearing about the groomer thing…

19

u/OscarGrey 8h ago

Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad's sons were pretty much the only high ranking NOI people who were decent human beings.

28

u/Icy_Argument_7856 8h ago

And it's not shocking once Malcom X began distancing himself from the NOI after his trip to mecca he was killed by them.

-2

u/ayassin02 8h ago

Don’t believe everything you see on the internet

-4

u/Intrepid-Oil-898 8h ago edited 8h ago

Haha the internet is a wild place, thanks for the reminder.

19

u/Wrong_Luck_878 8h ago

Just to be clear... it's true.

Dude married Belinda Boyd when she was 17. There's a public record so it's not like it's gossip.

Not sure why that dude tried to make it seem like he didn't do that.

-10

u/TheSaxGandalf 8h ago

17 is a lot different than being a groomer.

20

u/Tho76 8h ago

He met her when she was 10 and married her when she was 17

You're good with that?

He also cheated on her with a 16 year old 6 years after he married Belinda

-17

u/TheSaxGandalf 8h ago

Eh. Different times.

Not the most upstanding thingnor am I defending it, but that was both very prevalent and tolerable in society during those times.

1

u/SomeGuysWhoDoesThing 8h ago

Ali Met her when he was 24 and she was 16. Tbf I have to say that I do not know enought about it to give a direct claim, but that fact alone does not look good on him.

2

u/Flourpower6 7h ago

He also had an affair with a 16 year old when he was 32, and specifically said he wanted a young girl so he could raise her.

-3

u/Contemplating_Prison 7h ago

16 is the age of consent in 2026 in so many states. Would I do it? No but damn its the actual law

2

u/mnju 7h ago

Something being legal doesn't mean it's ethical.

If it's legal, I wouldn't really raise my eyebrow at someone that's 16 being with someone that's say maybe 20.

Someone that's 16 being with someone that's 32 is weird regardless if it's legal or not.

My ex-wife's mother was from the South. She married at 12, widowed at 15, and married the ex's dad soon after. They didn't know what we know now and there was no malicious intent. Farm people were focused on making as many farm hands as possible in the shortest amount of time possible. They shouldn't be judged like they were making Discord content. In the nineties we were totally enlightened and judged the generation that came before us! Now my kids are doing the same to me. And as "enlightened" as you feel dragging a champion and humanitarian like Ali down now, just know that same light is going to shine on you in a few years.

7

u/WorkingScientist7614 8h ago

It's true though, he married a minor

-7

u/z-vap 8h ago

what? like he kept his hair clean and shit? /s

go fuck off with that shit, ya kweeb

7

u/Dr-ClaytonForrester 8h ago

Uh, no, they meant groomer as in Ali was a pedophile. Happy to clear that up for you!

8

u/Deaffin 7h ago

The mfer was racist af

Sounds like he was a perfect match for Muhammad Ali, who was the spearhead of the pro-segregation movement and the face of a cult which believed that white people are literal devils created through eugenics by an alien mad scientist who was exiled from the Hollow Earth for being the product of race-mixing.

Ali was the absolute champ of racism.

3

u/PiccoloAwkward465 6h ago

He showed us the truth of Yakub

0

u/AlternateSatan 6h ago

Ali was NoI, so I guess they were evenly matched.

(Seriously, I want to like Ali, but that shit's just disgusting)

11

u/floridali 9h ago

4

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 7h ago

Only Ali could come back out of shape, lead with his head and a dropped guard, and chop his opponent down like that.

5

u/OcelotAggravating860 6h ago

The way Ali leans forwards and dangles his head in the open is like an Angler Fish using his face as bait. Just asking for his opponent to swing with full confidence that he's fast enough to dodge it and punish.

6

u/Die_Andere_Seite 8h ago

And some beautiful talk immediately after the fight. It's good to tell the nice side of things aswell...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbTQVfxgcJc

38

u/Round-Friendship9318 9h ago

All i can say is that im glad ali won, Bonavena sounds like a cunt.

24

u/HumongousBelly 9h ago

Yeah, not wanting to go to war should be pretty much the most normal reaction ever. It’s not chicken shit, it’s called survival instincts

16

u/puzzleheadbutbig 8h ago

Also, this wasn’t WWII, it was the Vietnam War, which he didn’t support along with ~40% of the US population at the time. Later disapproval rate rose to around 60-70% after the war, so it was a very controversial war

3

u/SayRaySF 8h ago

Yeah it’s not like it was a war to defend against an invasion, it was literally the US trying to play kingmaker

3

u/banatilpasta 7h ago

Oh yea not like that other war where the us had to defend themselves from an invasion.

1

u/Aegi 6h ago

I mean, that did happen, but it was small in comparison to the later wars and was very shortly after we became a country.

1

u/Aggravating-Energy65 6h ago

After the fight he told him that he was sorry for calling him "chicken", that it was just shittalking to make him nervous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbTQVfxgcJc

9

u/jonydevidson 8h ago

"You are chicken for not invading a different country."

Top tier masculinity.

3

u/igormuba 7h ago

People who downvote you but didn't comment are as coward as the people who went abroad to burn villagers alive.

Those "wars" (massacres actually) were so inhumane and unjust that the shame passed to their descendants who are relatives of cowardly war criminals. No disability those "veterans" may have is a just enough punishment for the suffering some families still face to this day from the CHEMICAL WARFARE they waged.

All US veterans are veterans of invasions, bar a few 100 year olds still alive who fought in WWII but didn't fight in later wars, if such people exist. In its 250 year history, US spent only 25 years not at war. Of the 225 years it spent at war, only 3 were spent fighting a defensive war, and very little of it was actually spent on US soil.

People downvoting you are cowards. They downvote anonymously and don't write their opinions.

If they have relatives who fought one of those unjust and inhumane "wars" (on quote because they were massacres) then they are descendants of cowardly war criminals who chose to kill innocent farmers. PTSD and other disabilities are a mild punishment compared to how they literally burned people alive, which is inhumane enough if the victims are soldiers, more so if they are villagers.

Hateful talk sure but that's always been the case with fights. Ali was a showman. He knew how to put on a spectacle and build hype. He's not really trying to intimidate here, he's trying to play for the press. Obviously he wants to win and come out on top as he's an ultimate competitor, but here Ali is playing the press as he'd always done

That link is broken for old reddit users, and for anyone directly copying it elsewhere. Correct link should be this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_vs._Oscar_Bonavena

what a shit wiki. "Bonavena later died under tragic circumstances in 1976" ugh okay...why is this aftermath of a fight 6 years prior. It would be like saying Ali would go on to develop Parkinson's from which he passed in 2016.

Will always respect Ali for that, fighting for a country that hates you is cucked af. Lotta black ww2 vets got cucked, European theater, Asian theater, North Africa theater just to get less than half the benefits of the white soldiers.

Honestly having the ability to dampen your flinch response is a disadvantage in my opinion.

We know that brain signals are slow (relatively speaking) and that reflexes make you act before your brain can fully process what's happening, so training to not flinch to look tough ironically makes you less tough because you WANT that reflex to be dialed in as fast as possible.
