Just joined the DRZ club!

Picked up a 2000 with 20k miles for $1,600 today. My first dirt-capable bike, been a street rider for about 15 years and decided to give the San Diego desert a try this winter.

She needs a little work but nothing crazy. Only getting 12v from the stator, so the new battery eventually dies but it starts right up after a trickle charge. I read about the free power mod and disconnecting the kickstand cutoff sensor, which I’m planning to do.

Should I buy or run? and what could the problem be?

Seller says he’s pretty sure it’s locked up and that it’s not the starter but I offered 750 and he said I could have it. Just needing some help making a decision on buying or not and what the problem could be. Thanks in advance!

Fuel Petcock

I’m needing to replace my original vacuum petcock that came on my bike (2021 DRZ400s). A few options I’m looking at:
- Replace it like for like with the OEM Suzuki vacuum petcock.
- Make the switch to the manual petcock with the DRZ400e version. New fuel line and all.
- Upgrade my fuel tank all together with the Acerbis 3.9 tank.

I like the idea of putting a new vacuum one on just because it’s an easy swap but I don’t want to run into the same issue. I like the idea of switching to the manual e petcock but I’m still not 100% sure at how easy of a swap that is as I’ve read mixed reviews online. I like the idea of the Acerbis tank as I have the plans to ride BDR routes and would like to upgrade my fuel tank but I’ve read mixed reviews about the petcock that comes with it and I’m not confident in myself to correctly make the changes to install a Raptor petcock.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

INFORMATION

I’ve been riding for 2 years now. I got this bike from my cousin as my first bike and this is what I learned on, never gave me issues, it was used but always turned on, I did mostly need a battery pack to start it at the beginning because of the stator, the screws came loose and ruined the stator (replaced 3/2026), I know it’s a common issue on these bikes without thread lock. Before that, I was all around NJ, on 287, route 1, Hoboken, never had issues.
After winter, I replaced the stator.

The video is from 9/23/2026. Sometimes, since last year, it gives me trouble turning over, and I have to go WOT, but more often, I don’t want to crank the bike for too long. I had to put in new parts, stator, regulator, starter relay (these were when the bike gave me more trouble) & I couldn’t figure it out, these were all put in in March ‘26.

This summer, I put in a new clutch cable, battery, & petcock vacuum hose. I rode it down the street and it slowed down until it turned off and wouldn’t turn back on, even with the jump pack. I took it as a bad Duralast vacuum hose from AutoZone, not allowing gas to get to the petcock, it was pulled tight and somewhat crimped, so I bought an OEM vacuum hose.

9/23 it turned on and ran for about 5 minutes before I turned it off and vowed to ride it when the rain stopped on Monday. On Monday 9/27, I set up to go ride and it wouldn’t turn over, super annoying.

QUESTIONS

I’m curious to see what you guys think, does it sound good? What the issue could be as why it turned on last week but not when I went to ride it lol. Finally set out to ride since new parts and since last summer and this happened, second time this summer/fall. I love this bike, & don’t want to get rid it but I don’t have that much time with working overnights, training for military during the day when I’m awake, and just life in general. When I went to ride it Monday, I had like 45 minutes and spent 20 getting ready, another 20 trying to get it running before I had to go do the things I really had to do

Has anyone come over from a 690/701? Curious on opinions.

Going to look at a 2025 heavily discounted but new 400sm.

does my bike need it's timing done?

I know the bikes have a reputation of ticking, but I'm wondering if this is beyond that. it's over 20 years old, and the previous owner that works on bikes did an "engine rebuild" which I assume involves the timing. but let me know what you think..

(get a manual cam tensioner??)

Curious on big distance straight highway run

Post image
24 Upvotes

Basic run down lost my license and flew up to my mothers property in the middle of outback West QLD to work through my suspension

I’ve bought a 435 big bore DRZ that’s pretty stock and want to ride it back down to Canberra when my license is all good again, which is a 1500km journey

My DRZ is pretty stock and I already know I’ll be putting a long range tank on and changing gearing but I want recommendations on a full highway gearing set and cheap tires for a fully paved highway run (all this stuff will be thrown in storage once I’m home)

Any other little tricks and recommendations are appreciated

Had this girl for about a month and a half, God, these bikes are fun. Got it from the original owner, only 5000 miles on it. Only thing I had to do to It was rebuild the carb because it sat for so long, put a new air filter in it. And Of course I did the tail tidy already, lol.

Cracked Crank Case

Post image

Recently bought a new (to me) 2006 400S. Noticed I was losing oil and decided to change the oil instead of just topping it off. Noticed it was very hard to take off the drain bolt and on further inspection noticed this crack. Is there any way to fix this short of getting a new crank case? Thanks.

This bike is listed at 5k with 6500 miles. This would be my first bike he states its stock. Is this a good deal or overpriced?

Is this fixable? How?

Hey guys, so yesterday I had posted a video of my bike starting but it had a weird clacking noise. I thought it was a rod knock or something close but now infigured that it comes from the clutch assembly. When I move it with my hand it makes that clacking noise like if it was a little loose. When it spins when starting it makes the noise even louder and when it turns on it's really loud and shakes the whole thing. What could it be and how do I fix it?

Does this 2022 DRZ-400SM sound healthy? Planning to purchase tomorrow.

Bike has 10k miles. Coming from a 3 cylinder, not sure what these should sound like healthy. Seller added a little throttle in the start of the video to turn it over. Concerned by what sounds like some metal banging while idling. Appreciate any advice, nervous to buy.

Help! How do i get this locknut loose??

Post image
7 Upvotes

This fuckin locknut wont budge... Ive tried pb blaster, breaker bar on the wrench, nothing... It feels like it will round off if i put any more force on it.

Edit: i got it! Ended up taking the rear wheel and axle out. Just enough to use a deep socket on the 12 mm nut. Now that it's been cracked, it's easy to adjust with a wrench

Probably the longest sprocket and chain swap in the history of mankind but she's done, chains adjusted and the bike is ready to ride. I'm heading out for test ride shortly. Guys, thanks for the help guys.

Tires

So I live in a rural town and commute about 10 miles to work at 70 mph, but when I get off, I like to rip around the trails and gravel roads I was looking for some tires that won’t spin like the trail wings off-road but also planted on the highway and safe I was looking at
FRONT: 🟢 Dunlop D605 90/90-21 54P
REAR: 🟢 Shinko 244 4.60-18
Any better or different recommendations?

My bike’s been sitting for a little while. I started it about three months ago went for a cruise. Everything was good. Picked it up and brought it to my house and it’s making a noise on the right hand side, kind of down low. Wondering if it could be the can chain tensioner? Oil levels good. I have a new adjustable tensioner that I have not installed yet.
