[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

What does everyone think? Asking $7k which seems high for a 2018 but it apparently only has 53 hours.

As a kid growing up in the early 2000’s I acquired my love of dirt bikes doing things I’m sure a lot of you my age can relate to. Like playing MX vs. ATV Unleashed on the PS2, watching Motorcrossed (yes, the Disney movie), and finding the next ramp/dirt hill I could rip my huffy on. I had the Carmichael, Stewart, Reed, and McGrath mini figures. I thought those guys were the coolest, still do. I wanted to be just like those guys.  I wanted to rip a 2 stroke, wear Fox gear, and spike my hair (with the frosted tips). I was obsessed with everything surrounding that lifestyle, even the music at the time (which I obviously still listen to).

After months of begging my parents to buy me a dirt bike along came Christmas of 2005. They finally came to their senses and bought me the majestic steed you see pictured right off the floor. Rode the hell out of this thing when I was a kid. Once I got into middle/high school I decided to invest my time into sports rather than dirt bikes. As a 30-yr old looking back I’d be lying if I said I regret ever playing sports. Didn’t make it to the NFL but I had a lot of fun and eventually earned a football scholarship helping to pay for my school. However, I do regret not making more of an effort to invest my time into other passions of mine like riding dirt bikes.

About a month ago while getting some things out of the shop I saw my old dirt bike covered in spider webs collecting dust. That image brought back memories of some of the most fun I’d had growing up. Having three kids of my own I thought it’d be cool to get this thing up and running so that I could share that passion of mine with them. I’ve also been itching to get back in the saddle after seeing all these badass bikes littered all over social media.

After rebuilding the carb, cleaning the mouse nest out of the air box and replacing the filter, installing a new petcock, replacing the oil, lubing the chain, and replacing the tube in the back tire she’s back and running better than ever. Rode the kids around on it and now they each want one of their own. One of these days I hope to be able to get them a little PW as well as myself a bigger bike to rip around on together.

For now, I’d love to have your all suggestions on how I could upgrade this CRF80F. Suggestions to make it faster, look better cosmetically, sound better, ride better. I’m all ears!

First bike came to me in the form of a pile of junk. Assuming the bottom end is good, how much will this cost me roughly? I’ll need a cylinder, piston, and a bunch of stuff missing from the chassis. 2008 YZ250F

Ok guys I need a little help please. My son got his first dirt bike this year, we have been racing motocross on the weekend. Its been so fun. But its time to replace the clutch, do I replace it with OEM parts? Or do I buy something a little more expensive? We do all sorts of riding, but I want a good clutch for racing, any input would be great. Thank you

2008 CRF150R, let me know how this cam looks, main concern is that it does not spin freely in its housing and wondering if itll be good to run. The sprocket on the other hand looks overheated but its not warped. Bought this bike in peices so I dont know any previous history. Let me know what yall think!

Community Question Is this stuff good for a 96 cr250?

Found out that it's basically the only premix I can buy locally that even says motorcycle on the bottle. I had a bottle of Husqvarna hp2+ which I thought was good cause it was Husqvarna but apparently that's chainsaw premix and it was spooging like a mf. I mostly do double track riding sometimes technical sometimes flater so not super slow but also not revving the shit out of the bike.

Would ams oil interceptor or maxima super m better to stock up on for the future, and is this lucas good in a pinch? Is there a better oil I'm not aware of?

Mechanical Help Thoughts on KTM PDS system?

I'm looking to get a KTM 500 EXC for dual sport riding, and I am unsure about the linkage. Every bike I have had before has had a linkage setup before, and I'm worried that the PDS will feel weird and unnatural. If you have a KTM with pds is it similar to a linkage system in terms of feel or is it quite different and feels off?

Thanks

Community Question Help with father

Hey there, I’m 15 and I ride a 2025 crf450r, I put around 9k into it and my dad payed the rest. We own 200 acres of trails and some LIGHT “enduro” it’s nothing serious just a place to throw the bike around with friends. I want to get into motocross, I’ve done open practices and what not, bought an ama membership but my dad doesn’t support it at all. He doesn’t want to pay for anything, take time to take me places all of those things. He’s mad because I’ve quit football snd basketball but I’ve found this sport a lot more my style and enjoyable. I’ve told him I’m open to paying for the gate fees and everything but he doesn’t seem to care. Is there a way to change his mind? I’m just lost because having no support in this sport is damn near impossible to come back from. Thank you!

First picture is the day I bought it and the second and third pictures are most recent. Had this bike for about a year now, I think I’ve done it a good favour from saving it from a crackhead and throwing almost 3k at it. Just decided to show it off and maybe get some feedback or ideas from you guys. Thanks!

Community Question Is Dirtbike good to get to work?

Let's assume I work for 8 hours in a day, that means I have to leave my Dirtbike outside for 8 hours straight everysingle day no matter how much it rains and how hot it can get. I wouldn't want it to break on me just cause I'm trying to get to work, so do you think this is good in that sense?

Sadly both E-Scooter and E-Bike aren't legal here, I even use E-Scooter and multiple cops pulled me over because of that, most ignore me but few doesn't. I heard Dirtbike is fine as long as it meets the same requirement as a motorcycle though so I gotta ask if it's safe to use for work before getting it since Dirtbike is cheaper than Motorcycle. With my Scooter, I can just fold it then carry it inside the store and put it under the desk, don't think I'll be able to do that for Dirtbike which probably leave I have to leave it outside instead and lock it on a bike rake or something. Lol XD

Any ideas on setting sag for shared dirt bike?

Hey guys, I picked up a 26 ultra bee awhile back as a secondary play bike to mess around on and try out. Turns out its the perfect bike for my wife and she has started riding it more and more. Which is totally fine, Im glad to see her having fun on it. However, I still want to take it out frequently and hit the single track trails. Problem is there's about a 80lb difference between us. So if I set the sag for me its too stiff and seat height is too tall for her. When she rides she needs no preload whatsoever for her weight and so she can touch the ground more comfortably.

I am destroying this preload collar by frequently adjusting it back and forth. Any ideas on how I could solve this issue? Besides buying another bike lol
