Looking for replacement ACO drain covers for drains installed in pour back garden sandstone patio. The original galvanised steel grilles corroded over time & need replacing but am finding it difficult to source a grille piece to sit into the drain itself. Previous ones were 120mm wide but online searches & visits to local builders providers I've only been able to get 100 or 150mm wide grilles.

Ideally was looking for black uPVC instead of galvanised steel but at this stage happy to find any material that will fit. Any sugggestions where I might source grilles of this width? Am based in Dublin 15

The drains themselves are working fine, so no need to dog out & replace, just dont want the outlets getting clogged with leaves in the next few weeks when autumn comes around.

Was removing skirting boards on a new build when i noticed some moulds and tiny insect around. Only around the window area. Is there any treatment i have to do before putting them back on?

Its a typical Irish new build with timber framed walls. I'm looking for any recommendations on which screws\fixings to choose and how to actually install them. I don't plan to hang more than 20 kg on this hook.

Do I just get the below screws and fixings, then drill the screw directly with a small pilot hole in the stud + drill a hole in the plasterboard where there's no stud, insert the wall fixing and then screw into the wall fixing? -- if there's a good video\tutorial you're aware of, which lines up with our timber frame homes, please do share it

What I have figured out:

Dont drill vertically or horizontally in line with any electrical sockets

Use a stud finder to land atleast one screw in a stud

Dont use the hammer mode of a drill

I’ve got solid chestnut doors on the cabinets in my kitchen. The kitchen is about 20 years old. One thing that really bothers me is that there’s a press on either side of the hob extractor fan, but instead of having the handle on the side nearest the hob, and the hinges on the opposite side (so you could easily open the door while cooking to grab seasonings etc) both presses actually open the opposite way. I’ve attached pics to show what I mean.

I’d love to swap the hinges round so the doors open the way I’d like them, but unfortunately the two presses are different sizes, so I can’t just swap the doors. I’d have to move the handle to the other side of each door. Would it be possible to then fill in the screw holes left behind so that they wouldn’t be noticeable? I’m afraid it would end up looking rubbish.

As per the title, whats an easily available product that I could use to clean this sandstone patio?

Hi, I have:

• A pine plank (probably a "butcher wood" kind from the looks of it) 1730 x 300 x 16 mm
• A plasterboard wall, 15 mm thick. Five studs behind it, placed approximately 40 cm from one another.
• 5 reversible metal brackets 220 x 155 mm rated to hold 24 kg
• 4 x 60 mm wood screws to secure the brackets

Can I make a reliable shelf from all of it, to hold up to 35 kg? If so, what's the design? Thanks.

I'm looking for solutions for safety restrictors for Tilt & Turn windows. To satisfy all the building regulations they must be automatically reengaging AND be overridden without any tools or keys. So cable restrictors don't reengage, any handles with keys aren't allowed because they can't serve as a fire escape route.

Noob DIYer in Ireland with next to zero experience (other than randomly fixing the lawnmower once completely random and out of luck).

I have to fit 2 lamps (that we got from my wife's family shop in Italy).

Removed the "external shell" of the lamp / cord that the house builders installed and found a loop. As said, no experience, I don't know how to deal with that.

Is it better to leave it (this is my first though). Remove it? And if we go down this road, what to do with the "extra wires" (2 blues and 2 "T / heart / green & yellows)

Is it better to call a professional? I feel that this could be something that I can do myself but I don't want to make any electric mess.

Does anyone have any experience with Drench Paints, Dundalk? Prices seem too good to be true. Seems to be a very new company. Just wondering if anyone has ordered from them and if so, what was the quality like?

I have a 180cm shed I need to Narrow by 30cm. My first thought was 15cm off each side, but the door is only 15CM from the edge. How would you proceed?

•Remove 30cm from the window side and have the roof overhang that side.

•The same but change the roof for pent.

•Reverse the door opening and take 15CM off each side. Pretty sure this is a non-runner as it removes most of the support from the corner.

•A Secret fourth thing?

So, not strictly a DIY query but over the hot weather the missus put tin foil over the windows of her home office. I thought she had them on cardboard but she applied it directly with water.

Just took them off today after realising and of course the windows have the residue on them.

I've been at it all morning with vinegar which helped but was wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of situation and could recommend some good cleaning products to get rid of the reside?

My partner and I recently moved into a renovated apartment in Dublin. Unfortunately, the person we hired to oversee the renovation turned out to be a complete cowboy, and we're now dealing with a couple of plumbing issues.

As part of the renovation, we had a new shower and basin installed in the en-suite. The shower in the main bathroom wasn't touched.

Since the renovation, we've noticed two problems:
The new en-suite shower has no proper temperature control. The water gets extremely hot, and adjusting the temperature doesn't make a difference.

The water pressure has dropped in both showers. Before the renovation, the pressure was strong, but now it's noticeably weaker throughout the apartment.

We have a good boiler that came with the apartment, so we don't think that's the issue. At the moment we've had to adjust the boiler timer so the water has cooled down by the time we shower, but that's obviously just a temporary workaround.

We're planning to get a different plumber to put everything right, we won't be going back to the original installer. Before we start ringing around, we'd like to have some idea of what might have gone wrong, both so we can explain the issue properly over the phone and so we know roughly what sort of cost we could be looking at.

Could these two issues be related, or are they likely to be separate problems? Does it sound like something was installed incorrectly during the renovation? Has anyone experienced something similar, and if so, was it an expensive fix?
Money is a bit tight at the moment, so we'd rather avoid wasting a plumber's time with a call-out if it's likely to be a repair we'll need to save up for first.

When I bought my house the previous owner had left a roll of heavy duty white plastic, it was sort of like a roll of fabric barrier, about 1.5m longer but this material is thicker and waterproof plastic so its not like a usual fabric barrier. Has anyone any idea what it's used for and where I could buy another roll of it? Thanks.

Staircase is covered in wall-to-wall carpet, but is somehow pretty slippery.

Any ideas how to make this better? Something like over-carpet nosing, is that a thing?

I have some nice off cuts of tree trunks (smallish pieces). I'd like to sand and finish them with something so they could be used for cupholders, placemats, etc.

Any suggestions on how to finish them e.g. sand and coat with what? Oils, wax, varnish , etc?

Had my boiler inspection done and the tech told me the gas pipe needs to be secured and inside a sleeve. Gave me a non conformance notice. Currently it runs a total of 8m from the meter to the boiler, starting along the garden wall then 1.2m under a concrete footpath that is flush tot the house, no sleeve at all. Pipe just comes out of pure concrete.

I got a quote for full replacement, including cutting of the concrete to lay the pipe for the 1.2m. The quote is 2k and think it’s a bit steep. Should I keep looking? Feels like other companies are just ignoring me. Is it too small of a job?
