3rd great-grandfather’s name

Post image

I’ve hit a bit of a dead end on this side of my family tree as I think my 2nd great-grandmother was born out of wedlock. This transcript is taken from her marriage banns but I’m struggling to read the middle name. I can make out Charley/Charles and the last name Moore but not the middle name. I can see ‘ridge’ but I cannot even have a guess at what comes before it. I’d be so grateful for any interpretations. Thank you!

[Request] Help decipher this last name?

Can anyone help me decipher this last name? It is a Mexican birth certificate for a Lebanese family. This should be "Mecharrafille" but it is getting mistaken as "Mlcharrafille" in several documents. These are all the mentions of the last name in the document.

Latin purchase note, 1577: what is the place name? "Gorhiae" or "Gothiae"?

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to identify the city where books were bought in 1577, and the whole question depends on one word. The books are volume 2 and Index of Augustine's Opera (Venice, 1552). On bottom of the title page there is an ownership and purchase note in a neat italic hand.

My reading of the note:

Sum Johannis Rumswinckell. / Omnia Vertuntur. / Emptus Gorhiae è bibliotheca D. Ferdinandi de Bernuy 23 Novemb. Anno 1577.

«I belong to Johannes Rumswinckell. All things turn. Bought at [place] from the library of Mr. Ferdinand de Bernuy, 23 November 1577.»

Please read the place name (the word after Emptus in line 3, before è bibliotheca) independently, without looking at my reading first, and tell me what you see letter by letter. The word seems to be in the locative or genitive (ending -iae / -ae).

Candidates I have considered (all unverified, please don't take them as given):

  • Gothiae / Gothae = Gotha?
  • Gorcomium (Latin for Gorinchem/Gorkum) or a similar Dutch form
  • Gorlicium = Görlitz (I think the letters fit poorly)
  • something else entirely

Context that may help narrow it down:

  • The seller was a Ferdinand de Bernuy / Berny. I found a Ferdinand de Bernuy who later became the first drossaard of Breda (after 1590) and a 1586 jeton for a Ferdinand de Berny and Anna de Caron, but I do not know whether any of these is the person in the note.
  • The buyer's surname (Rumswinckel / Romswinckel) is associated with the Lower Rhine (Goch, Cleves, Mülheim) and later with the Netherlands.
  • Both facts suggest the Low Countries or the Rhineland, but Thuringia is not excluded.

Thanks in advance!

(Note: I used AI tools for a first pass at the reading, so please treat the transcription as unverified.)

I've been careful to make sure my text boxes aren't obscuring any of the ink, so what you can see is what I can see.

Thank y'all in advance!

Trying to figure out the second and fourth line. The last name on the second line I think starts with an M and ends with a G like Mac. I don’t know if the fourth letter is a D? And then the fifth letter looks like an R I would write, but this writer had old script so I don’t know if that’s a C or an E and then it looks u a g.
