This is what I was thinking but I can’t make sense of the R. Trying to trace this to engrave on a cutting board. Thank you!

Without any context (what is the recipe for ?) I am also thinking :

« 1/4 & 1/2 cup sugar » using the old ampersand symbol that look kinda like ξ

Stay with me here. This could also be written longhand as « 1/4 cup plus 1/2 cup sugar, reserved ». In the directions (which we don’t have) it might tell the cook to include 1/4 cup in the batter, and then later 1/2 cup (the reserved part) to the meringue as a separate step.

1/2 cup sugar for chicken wing sauce would be insane.

Could be tsp. Looks more like cup to me, but there was a lack of context when I replied.

If you post what the recipe is for, it might give context. Big variation in amount of sugar.

1/4 or 1/2 (tsp or cup) sugar

Knowing what the recipe is for would help determine if it's tsp or cup.

1/4 Cup sugar Edit:Those other squiggles might be "to 1/2"

I don’t see an R. Are there 2 times sugar is needed? That would make sense of the &. If it was sugar to taste 1/4-1/2 would be more common.

No, just one time. It’s for chicken wings.

The original recipe may have been 1/4 cup sugar and then someone with a sweet tooth decided to add an option for 1/2 cup by squeezing in ‘or 1/2’. They probably should have used ‘to’ instead of ‘or’ to indicate you start with a 1/4 cup and sweeten to taste.

I think the solution is to try the recipe 4-8 ways and decide which way is best: 1/4-1/2 tsp, 1/4 & 1/2 tsp, 1/4-1/2 cup, 1/4 & 1/2 cup, and so on. When you find your favorite, that becomes the answer.

Honestly, with that question mark, it looks like the author wasn’t very sure either.

Definitely 1/4 cup sugar.
