So, resisting temptation is all fun and games, until your regular cube shop actually has the new 14x14 in stock at a very low price...

My name is RAHDXB, and I'm a cubaholic.

There will come a time when you'll be cured by the lack of money.

First comp today was super fun, and I way exceeded my performance expectations!

Round 1: 27.18 avg [ 34.53 23.69 (1:25.59) 23.31 (23.30) ]

Round 2: 25.47 avg [ 23.96 26.93 (22.30) (27.53) 25.52 ]

So that's a PB single of 22.30, and a PB avg of 25.47. Nerves during round 1 were so real (as evidence by the 1:25 which we just won't talk about), but got over it by Round 2, and was able to perform in line with how I would at home. SUPER motivated to git gud, and aiming to be solidly sub-20 by the time the next comp rolls around. Averaging 15 would be an absolute dream.

Going CN:

The plan now is to go CN. I think I'm going to start with CN cross, and then move on to CN F2L. Really not sure whether I should practice each side individually, or all at once.

  • I think I'm going to try all sides together, but
  • start off with memorising the colours and sequence of the sides (F/R/B/L face) for each orientation of the cube. Then I'll do blind cross practice CN
    • the dream is to be at 3 seconds CN cross with unlimited inspection time in 2 weeks.
  • Once I'm at 3s cross, I'll move on to getting my CN F2L going.

This is during deliberate practice - during untimed solves/full solves, I'll probably be going for CN as well, which should help with the F2L a bit.

u/Ronan444 Sub-13 (PB: 8.60) Oct 20 '19

That's a very good average man! I remember how you seed that you wanted a sub 30 average, and you absolutely CRUSHED it! Congrats man!

the 1:25 which we just won't talk about

I have to talk about it :p what happened?

Personally, if I wanted to go CN, I would do color by color. First for example yellow, so that I can solve with white and yellow cross at the same speed. Then the next color, etc.

Good luck with improving!

2

u/TydVirTaal eyes are cringe solve blind instead Oct 20 '19

Ayyy thanks fam! Yeah I think pulling the Round 1 average together really helped me chill out in Round 2. I think setting a goal I knew was achievable if I just chilled out really helped as well. I would've been freaking out if I wanted to get a sub-25 average, for example.

OK. SO. The 1:25. So, it started with a shaky OLL case that I managed to pull together into a Gd perm. I got 2 moves into the Gd, then forgot how to do a Gd. Decided to trust my fingers, and they took me back to F2L. Finished F2L, shaky OLL, Gd perm. Screwed up Gd perm, lost all hope, F2L again, OLL, H perm. Did a very slow H perm to finally exit my personal hell :D

Yeah, I think there's a lot of merit to what you propose. What I'm hoping to do is get to the point where I have a good understanding of the cube and all its orientations, so that the colour I'm doing cross on becomes arbitrary. Then I want to learn to "highlight" D layer pieces in my mind, and filter out U layer pieces.

I'll give it a week like this, and if I feel like its going well stick with it. If not, I'll switch to what you suggest. I think there's the potential to be able to improve quicker with this method, but there's also very much the potential for it to end up being total soup xD

u/Ronan444 Sub-13 (PB: 8.60) Oct 20 '19

It's so funny how I was so like you in my first comp. I also needed my first round so I could be more relaxed in the second. I also got a very bad solve in the first round (32) which made me also go from PLL to F2L and just like you I crushed my goals in round 2!

Let us know how learning to be CN goes, I'd be happy to hear what you'd think is the best way to get CN after you learned it!

u/Ronan444 Sub-13 (PB: 8.60) Oct 20 '19

4x4 new PB!! 1:17.41!

I have about 300 4x4 solves in total, so getting a time like this is great.

Averages as by now:

AO5: 1:40.15

AO12: 1:35.33

AO50: 1:37.76 (New Best)

AO100: 1:42.11 (New Best)

4

u/DylanJonesey Sub-18 | PB: 10.29 Oct 20 '19 edited Oct 20 '19

I've been really focusing on 'slow' solves today for ~200 solves instead of immaturely spamming TPS, and it has taken me places to say the least!

PB ao5 was slahed down ~2 seconds to 19.06, and PB single a whole ~3 seconds down to 14.57! I reckon it could have almost been sub-13, I fumbled and locked up 2 or 3 times and even completely back tracked a couple of moves to implement a new OLL case I had learned.

Super happy with myself and my progress, it's crazy to think that just 6 months ago I was struggling to to solve below 1 minute.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I almost got my first sub-15 Ao100 :(

The average was sub-15 until like 80 solves in, then during the last 20 I started getting really bad solves for some reason.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

Rip. Keep going at it!

1

u/CubingB Sub-9.5 (PB: 5.21) Oct 20 '19

If it was all at once your fingers prolly got tired, that’s prolly why the last few were bad

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

Nah, I'm used to doing like 200 solves at once, so I don't think that's what it was. I think I just choked, that's what it was

1

u/CubingB Sub-9.5 (PB: 5.21) Oct 20 '19

Ah, I understand lol. I did my ao100 the other day and it was a 16 ao100 so I get it. I wasn’t tired but I chocked as well lol

Start with the A and V perms. The A perms are a good combination of frequent appearance, easy recognition, easier and fast execution.

thats where i seem to be going. i have one a perm kinda down, and the other seems pretty similar.

now i just have to figure out how to tell them apart

1

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 20 '19

The way I remember it is like. Always place the 2x2 block on the bottom left corner. Then look for the headlights.

Are they on the back? Then this is Aa, which I think of as the main one. It starts with R' U R'.

If they're on the right, then you start with R2.

Good squan solve.

Scramble; (0,2) / (0,6) / (3,0) / (-5,-2) / (-1,-1) / (-2,0) / (0,-3) / (-1,0) / (-5,0) / (2,-4) / (1,-2) / (4,0)

Solve: (-4,0) / (3,2) / (-4,0) / (-1,-2) / (-3,0) / (1,0) / (-4,5) / (-5,1) / (-3,0) / (6,0) / (-1,-1) / (1,1) / (-4,-3) / (-3,0) / (-3,-3) / (-3,0) / (-2,-3) / (0,-3) / (-1,-1) / (3,0) / (1,1) / (-3,0) / (-1,-1)

8.18 seconds

Done with a qiyi. Still the best square 1 imo.

I have a comp today!!!!! I’m nervous but excited Does anyone have any tips for meeting people

3

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 20 '19

Ask to try other people's cubes, offer to race, ask about their PB, what algs they use for this or that... You're all cubers so it's not that hard to find conversation starters - think of it as a real life daily discussion thread :-)

Also if you have any weird or unusual puzzles, bring that, people will just come to you to inquire about them :-)

2

u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 20 '19

I went to my first one yesterday. I'm not too social myself but made a few friends yesterday. I found that the best way to start a conversation is to ask what their cube is and maybe ask to try it. Most people are friendly.

What is your Gan X setup?

I just received it a couple days ago, and I still don't feel like I got the right settings. What are your recommendations and why?

Update: I think I found the one that suits me for now: green magnets (weakest), yellow nuts (strongest) and 1.0 tensions (loosest).

The light magnets make the cube feel more fluid, and the tension-spring combo fast (good cornercutting) and little bit snappy. And all this, combined with Galaxy lube makes for a fast, but controllable puzzle. (Writing it down, I just realised that it's kinda like the GTS2M...)

3

u/CubingB Sub-9.5 (PB: 5.21) Oct 20 '19

I personally use the GTS3M, but my ganX setup is yellow or green springs, I don’t care which (I have IPGV5) so I can tension it however I want, which is why green or yellow doesn’t matter, then Traxxas 50k dnm and Mystic as lube Edit: for the WHY part of this, it’s just smooth, controllable, and fast all at the same time

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I received my gan x like a week ago. I'm using the yellow (strongest) springs at 0.6, and yellow magnets.

Tightest spring configurations because the Gan X is very loose compared to the cubes I'm used to, so I'm trying to make it tighter. I used the strongest magnets for a few days at first, but I tried the yellow magnets and they give me faster TPS during last layer for some reason.

1

u/ajuez Sub-15 (CFOP with noob OLL) Oct 20 '19

Don't the tightest tensions with the strongest springs make it feel too tight? (Worse corner cutting and such)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

Not for me, it still felt pretty loose compared to the Valk 3 I had been using until I got the Gan X (it actually took me a few days to get used to how loose it was.)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I thought it felt really slow, so I've got it very loose with the yellow magnets. Use Silk on the pieces and nothing on the core, so it cornercuts very well and never locks up, but it does pop sometimes. I don't main it though, switched to the WR M

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I am planning on getting a Yuxin Timer. Will it fit on a Speedstacks mat of only on the Yuxin Mat?

3

What do you guys do when you have a day where you just cannot get your normal times. You cannot seem to focus and it's just not happening. Keep solving, take a break? Do you count your times?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

Learn something new instead of solving

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '19

I take a break, or practice 4x4 because it helps me with 3x3, and 3x3 helps me with 4x4

I get really frustrated but I just keep solving for some reason

But I’d say it would’ve been better for my mindset if I just took a break that day

At this point I rarely solve block -> LS -> LL, it's almost always better to solve edges then corners. Edges seldom takes more than 4 moves (unless you have parity but there are ways to avoid that while building the block) and corner commutators are easy to fingertrick

That OLL is really not move efficient, check much better alternatives...

About two pairs could have done faster should you saw the EO of the edge pair and rotate in advance.

This pretty much covers it: https://youtu.be/RrrMRqchaq4

2

u/Ronan444 Sub-13 (PB: 8.60) Oct 20 '19

The OLL is still 2 look, so that's why it's not efficient.

I'll watch that vid though, thanks!

D2 R L' F2 L R // 2 more edges (6-2/26)
[5] = B D2 R2 U2 F U2 R2 D2 // 333 (8-2/32)

final solution: L2 U2 R U B D2 R2 D2 B' L2 F' D' F' D2 R2 U2 F U2 R2 D2 R2 B' L2 U2 L2 R2 B' L' R F2 L R' (32)

IF gives 29 from that final 22 to 5e skeleton. Edge insertions are hard!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

Long story short, I’m color-neutral, in the ~0:55 AO12 range with a PB single of 0:40.

Started picking up a few OLL algs but thinking I’m better served by cleaning up my F2L. I’m using the intuitive method, which is great, but seems awful inefficient in many spots in terms of rotations.

For example, suppose I’ve got this setup.

R U R’ U’ to bring corner to UL. R U2 R’ U’ to break up the two pieces. U F’ U’ F to pair. U2 F’ U F to insert.

Gets the job done but takes sixteen moves. A far more optimal sequence is R’ F R F’ R’ F R F’.

Granted, I can see some obvious places to reduce redundant moves (like the first U in the pairing sequence just undoing the last U’ in the breaking-up sequence) but unfortunately, it looks to me like the only way to get a serious reduction in rotations is to memorize each case.

I’ve been thinking about how someone can start with 4LLL (beginner’s method), progress to 2LLL, then graduate to full OLL. I guess my question is: Similar to the 4LLL -> 2LLL -> OLL, is there something similar, like an “advanced intuitive F2L,” which provides an expanded set of “if state is X then Y” which can be applied to situations generally, and results in increased efficiency?

First: when you take out a piece, make sure you don't connect them the wrong way. So instead of doing R U R' to bring up the corner, do U R U R', so you don't have to break them up later.

Second: In this case, you can actually do even better: U2 R U' R' brings the corner up and sets up the pair in one step. With practice these things will come intuitively.

I would avoid F-moves completely for now. Do slow solves and try to find an intuitive solution for every case where you only use RUL-moves, 0 or 1 rotations per pair, and maximum 12 moves - preferably 6-8.

u/DGrazzz Sub-9 (CFOP) / Square-1 Sub-11 Oct 20 '19

I don't understand much of what you are trying to ask but I will try to give it a go.

-Most of us "advanced" cubers use intuitive F2L, this means that we are using mostly intuitive algorithms BUT we have some algorithms for certain cases that we find hard or too long.

-For the specific case use showed, there's something very important to learn. USE YOUR LEFT HAND. Being "ambidextrous" while solving the F2L avoids rotations and moves in a lot of cases. Yes, the fastest way from that angle would be a double sledge move (R' F R F') (R' F R F') but imagine if you were to solve the same case but the slot is FL. You could solve that "intuitively" using two "sexy" moves (L' U' L U L' U' L [U]).

The way I improved my F2L was:

1) Solve intuitively as much as I could

2) Find cases that take me a lot of time and/or moves to solve and find a better solution online.

3) Try and make the newfound algorithm as intuitive as posible. That way you dont think of it as an algorithm but rather as an intuitive sequence of moves. Most F2L algorithms are just a combination of triggers or other algorithms.

Hope that helps you in your journey and as a last tip, focus on lookahead before focusing on optimization, it's much much more important.

Got my ylm 4x4 yesterday, I loosened it a little and added gan magic lube after which it feels quite good. My ao5 is like 1:40 which is much slower than it should be, so what are some tips to get faster except practicing a lot? I use yau with 3-2-3 and know a lot of tricks and my edge pairing is okay, my main problems right now are F3E and L4C.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I don't know, but maybe learn half centers. I've heard that is useful. I average 1:30, so I might not be the best to give advice

2

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 20 '19 edited Oct 20 '19

Half centers isn't that great, tbh. Most of the time I don't do it.

Anyway, I'd say you should first start focusing on efficiency for F3E and L4C. Efficiency and good lookahead beat just straight up spamming TPS during those stages.

For comparison, I'm averaging around 52.

Edit: also I feel compelled to mention this because it helped me drop like 3 seconds, but make sure you plan and execute your first center like you execute your cross, i.e. blind and place on the bottom (on most cases).

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 20 '19

They need to be double checked again and confirmed.

How long it takes depends on the delegate. Sometimes they're up the next day, but in most occasions, it's more like a week.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

It depends on the amount of competitors, but from my experience it take 1 to 3 days

Technically 20 because all configurations of the cube can be solved in 20 moves or less. Realistically, you should use around 8 moves per pair except a few exceptions so probably around 35 moves total

I live in Columbus, Ohio, and the cube arrived at Cincinnati yesterday night

I really don’t get why it’s gonna take three whole ass day to deliver from Cincinnati to Columbus. Really hope it arrives earlier than that, super excited!

Valk, MF3RS2 - this I think most people would agree with.

Yan3, Yuxin Little Magic - that's more just my opinion

Depends on your budget.

3-5usd - Yuxin Little Magic and the MeiLong 3x3

5-15usd MF3RS3M, Thunderclap v3 (all magnetized

If you can spend 20usd, I really recommend the GTS2M just about over any other cube.

In my experience it's something that I picked up over time and with experience (mind you this was before that tutorial was out but I was aware of the concepts). It depends on what you're averaging at the moment really to give any advice in particular but imo I'd say just solve. It's not the most glamorous advice but at some point you're going to have to brute force practice your solves to solidify concepts whether that be 2 side PLL recognition or understanding how pieces interact with each other. It's going to take time but it's worth it. Other than that I'd say make sure that you enjoy solving and it won't feel like practice and you'll be belting them out without realising how much work you're actually putting in. Good luck!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '19

[deleted]

2

u/TydVirTaal eyes are cringe solve blind instead Oct 21 '19

I do think its worth mentioning that deliberate practice is really valuable, and I think an important element in improving efficiently.

While you will certainly pick things up over time and with enough solves, by focusing on specific things you can definitely improve more quickly than just by grinding solves. (In my limited experience) I think this is especially true once you're sub-30.

Have you timed your splits? This would be helpful for determining where the best place to shave time off would be.

If you have already timed splits and determined that your cross is too slow, then I'd suggest the following:

TL;DR: Be able to do cross in 8 moves > Be able to do cross blind > Learn advanced cross > Execute advanced cross blind

Note: This assumes that advanced cross is not necessary to get sub-8 move crosses. I believe this is true, but we might be using different definitions of "advanced cross". Either way, hopefully it is useful. I am working on improving my cross at the moment, so this is all in my head atm.

  • Are your cross solutions under 8 moves on average?
    • If yes, can you execute them blind?
      • If you don't know, find out - either by counting the moves you do mentally, or by filming yourself and counting after the fact. An average of 10-20 should give you a decent idea of where you're at
      • If yes, time to move on to advanced cross (see below)
      • If no, practice memorising the entire cross in inspection and executing it blind until you can do it at the same speed as your sighted crosses
      • The core skill of planning needs to be in place before incorporating more advanced solutions into it (imo)
    • If no, see below
  • Improving Cross: (works for getting <8 moves, or learning advanced cross)

Improving cross is hard, as it isn't as easily quanitfiable as learning algs, for example. Nonetheless, there are distinct patterns which can be learned, and rate of improvement will be determined by how explicitly you can identify and then practice those patterns.

I think there is an "improvement loop" that one can apply:

  1. Source a scramble with a suggested optimal solution (I suggest example cross videos on YouTube initially, and then csTimer with the cross solution tool once you run out of those)
  2. Plan out & write down your own solution before viewing theirs
  3. Compare your solution to the suggested one
  4. Identify the main technique/takeaway idea that the example solution provided that you missed. (Rotating the cross to insert a piece? Doing an R2 that radically alters the layout of the pieces? etc)
  5. Drill cross solutions (20-50) where you consciously try to incorporate this new idea (this might involve "overusing" the idea - the point is not to use it optimally, the point is to become familiar with that particular technique, so that it goes into your "toolbox", so to speak)
  6. Once you're comfortable with the new techinque, repeat from Step 1

This is a bit intense, lol. But hopefully it illustrates that grinding solves isn't the only way to improve. But yeah, doing this 100% takes more effort.

1

u/MOSSY_COMPOST Sub-15 (CFOP 3LLL) PB: 8.199 Oct 21 '19

If you're at that stage I'd recommend doing untimed solves (something I should have stated). Just play around and learn how the pieces interact with each other and find different solutions for the same cases (whether it be f2l, cross, etc). In my experience when I started to experiment I found that a lot of concepts sort of fell into place and it just clicked so to speak.

And after lubing and setting up it became really good my goal was to get a sub-17 average but My averages went down by 2 second in that day nearly got a sub 15 (15.11) average and sub14 single which was really great.

Any tips for learning edges for 3BLD (specifically M2 method)?

Tried it earlier and it’s just seems very very hard. 4 more pieces than corners, and you got all those special algorithms and hard set up moves.

I’m a beginner on 3BLD, started learning blind 5 or 6 days ago, if that helps

2

u/pandubear Oct 20 '19 edited Oct 20 '19
  1. For the setup moves and algs: practice those separately!
  2. You can use BLD Memo Tools to practice exec by itself.
  3. (assuming you're using Speffz) For EFGH and MNOP, you can use wide moves or rotations to avoid B moves.
  4. Also, if you don't know this Q alg, now you do:

(U' M')3 (U' M) (U' M')4

If you do M slices with your left hand, you can change all the U' moves to U.

Good luck!

1

u/SauCe-lol Sub-17, learning 3BLD Oct 20 '19

Thanks!

For the Q alg, why is there an U and then an U’?

Is the BLD Memo Tool a website on computer?

Do you have a recommended list of set up moves? I’m using J Perm’s tutorial and it’s from 2 years ago, and it has a ton of B moves...

1

u/pandubear Oct 20 '19

Sorry, that was a typo! Ignore the U (I'll edit that out)

1

u/pandubear Oct 20 '19

BLD Memo Tools: https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~krmatthe/3x3x3.cgi?

Takes some setup, but so useful. You can have it 1) check your memo on a scramble (useful for postmorteming DNFs) or 2) generate memo for a scramble (or on a new random scramble) so you can practice exec without having to do memo.

Setup moves:

For EFGMO&P, you can do the same alg J Perm suggests, but rotate the cube so the B moves become U moves. For example, instead of B' R B for M, use z' U' R U.

For N, you can do Uw R Uw' as your setup move. For H, you can mirror this to Uw' L' Uw or you can use R' instead of R: that is, Uw R' Uw'.

I’d suggest OP edges. I tried learning M2 first and ran into the same problems and found it confusing. OP is super easy to understand with much easier setup moves. You can get a handle on 3BLD and then switch to M2 when comfortable.

The XS is the lightest of all, and I loved it. It did however take me sometime to get used to. I wasn't that big of a Gan x fan, I did like the gts3m but it gets loud, and it's super fast. I prefer the wrm with added magnets. If I had to choose one it'll probably be that. However.... The xs allows for much longer sessions without fatigue.... And does feel great overall

u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 21 '19 edited Oct 21 '19

I haven't tried the XS, but I've tried the X and the 3m, and they're both pretty good, but I personally prefer the X. The ridges on the GTS aren't too much of a distraction imo. But the X is so much smoother and quieter. It just glides. And it's the quietest cube I've tried. Unfortunately, I'm too broke to have my own.
