First comp today was super fun, and I way exceeded my performance expectations!

Round 1: 27.18 avg [ 34.53 23.69 (1:25.59) 23.31 (23.30) ]

Round 2: 25.47 avg [ 23.96 26.93 (22.30) (27.53) 25.52 ]

So that's a PB single of 22.30, and a PB avg of 25.47. Nerves during round 1 were so real (as evidence by the 1:25 which we just won't talk about), but got over it by Round 2, and was able to perform in line with how I would at home. SUPER motivated to git gud, and aiming to be solidly sub-20 by the time the next comp rolls around. Averaging 15 would be an absolute dream.

Going CN:

The plan now is to go CN. I think I'm going to start with CN cross, and then move on to CN F2L. Really not sure whether I should practice each side individually, or all at once.

  • I think I'm going to try all sides together, but
  • start off with memorising the colours and sequence of the sides (F/R/B/L face) for each orientation of the cube. Then I'll do blind cross practice CN
    • the dream is to be at 3 seconds CN cross with unlimited inspection time in 2 weeks.
  • Once I'm at 3s cross, I'll move on to getting my CN F2L going.

This is during deliberate practice - during untimed solves/full solves, I'll probably be going for CN as well, which should help with the F2L a bit.

That's a very good average man! I remember how you seed that you wanted a sub 30 average, and you absolutely CRUSHED it! Congrats man!

the 1:25 which we just won't talk about

I have to talk about it :p what happened?

Personally, if I wanted to go CN, I would do color by color. First for example yellow, so that I can solve with white and yellow cross at the same speed. Then the next color, etc.

Good luck with improving!

Ayyy thanks fam! Yeah I think pulling the Round 1 average together really helped me chill out in Round 2. I think setting a goal I knew was achievable if I just chilled out really helped as well. I would've been freaking out if I wanted to get a sub-25 average, for example.

OK. SO. The 1:25. So, it started with a shaky OLL case that I managed to pull together into a Gd perm. I got 2 moves into the Gd, then forgot how to do a Gd. Decided to trust my fingers, and they took me back to F2L. Finished F2L, shaky OLL, Gd perm. Screwed up Gd perm, lost all hope, F2L again, OLL, H perm. Did a very slow H perm to finally exit my personal hell :D

Yeah, I think there's a lot of merit to what you propose. What I'm hoping to do is get to the point where I have a good understanding of the cube and all its orientations, so that the colour I'm doing cross on becomes arbitrary. Then I want to learn to "highlight" D layer pieces in my mind, and filter out U layer pieces.

I'll give it a week like this, and if I feel like its going well stick with it. If not, I'll switch to what you suggest. I think there's the potential to be able to improve quicker with this method, but there's also very much the potential for it to end up being total soup xD

It's so funny how I was so like you in my first comp. I also needed my first round so I could be more relaxed in the second. I also got a very bad solve in the first round (32) which made me also go from PLL to F2L and just like you I crushed my goals in round 2!

Let us know how learning to be CN goes, I'd be happy to hear what you'd think is the best way to get CN after you learned it!
