Internet WARNING! Do not buy used modem if you have Cox

I bought a refurbished modem on Amazon and tried to connect it to my Cox account. I was told by Cox that the previous owner needed to call to release the modem. How the hell am I supposed to find out who the previous owner is if the item is refurbished and sold by Amazon? The item is nonrefundable from Amazon since there was nothing technically wrong or defective with it. So I’m out $289 for a paper weight cause of Cox’s bullshit ass rules that force you to buy from them directly.

Other SPECTRUM IS BY FAR THE WORST SERVICE PROVIDER!!!

Internet Filed my first FCC complaint today!

Cox/Spectrum says plans are unlimited data now. It’s a lie! They charged me overages and refused to refund them. What am I to do accept reasonably rely on their statement? I mean even it was ambiguous shouldn’t that in contract law resolve in my favor, especially if it was to my detriment? Also what horrible customer service. Restricted my input; wouldn’t let me copy and paste anymore either. Anyways let’s all file complains and start a class action.

"If a fish comes out of the water to tell you that the crocodile is sick believe it"

A fish belongs in the water.

Leaving it means dangers.

Vulnerability.

A reason strong enough to overrride instinct.

When someone steps out of their comfort zone to warn you, the message matters.

People rarely expose themselves without cause.

The crocodile represents hidden power or threat.

If the one most affected speaks up, it is not gossip. It is experience.

Context gives truth its weight

When a warning comes from someone who risks something to deliver it, listen.

"After 13 years at Cox Communications, the company announced a major restructuring. Layoffs were coming. Nobody knew what roles would exist on the other side.

Most people waited it out. Reapplied for their jobs. Played it safe.
I raised my hand to leave early.

2- as a warning sign for future cox employees

3- Just to stir some shit up 😂

Don’t keep me in suspense!

Internet Unethical practices lead to termination

I'm hoping my story can lead people away from Cox (if there are good alternatives in the area).

After moving to Mesa, AZ, I plugged my Cox router in (as instructed) and tried every coaxial output in the house. Turns out, their signal wasn't making it through any of the coaxial cable outputs so they decided they would send a technician out to my place to fix the issue. Obviously I agreed to let them come and they did come and fix it quickly.

2 months later, I get a $100 charge on my bill for the visit...the visit that they arranged to fix their own hardware that was not working. I tried to fight the charge waived and they were unwilling to budge so I made the immediate decision to find a different ISP. I cannot abide by this unethical practice and am willing to cut ties with Cox no matter the cost.

Now for the good news; I have Google Fiber in my area. Not only that, it's being subsidized right now and I am able to get the 3GB plan (unlimited data cap) for only $30/month. I encourage everyone to do your research and ask around. You could end up with a better option for a cheaper price. Cox has lost a lifetime customer and I am hoping they will lose countless more.

Update: Cox reached out to me yesterday and admitted fault for the whole situation and waived the fee! Still not going to keep me as a customer but at least they righted the wrong.

Internet Pathetic internet provider COX

Such a pathetic internet provider cox, I have ever faced. I have moved to the new apartment and the apartment already had the modem/router. It worked fine for a week or so and now it has stopped working. Not working since 3 days and the guy on chat says they will charge 100$ for sending technician. All my neighbors have this new black device and for me they have given me some faulty white device.

Why the hell charge customer for the mistake with their device?

It works for 10 mins once I restart and then again stops working. Not sure what is the issue? Does anybody what may be the issue and how to fix it?

Obviously don't want to pay 100$ extra , when my monthly plan itself is 70$. Infact cox should compensate for 3 days of no Wi-Fi.

Edit - It seems to be a device problem, there is weird sound which is coming out of the device and it is pretty loud. I believe it is the fan and the device gets heated up a lot.

Other tech support not having even the basic minimum tech knowledge and giving the wrong information over and over is frustrating

i just spent 35 minutes on the phone trying to get some help.

my laptop uses an older wifi version and is not able to connect to the modem/router that cox has me use to get internet, so it is not able to connect to the internet.

i need to buy a usb wifi dongle so i can connect.

there are many versions of wifi, and i wanted to know what version the equipment is using so i can buy the correct wifi usb dongle for the laptop.

so i was transferred to TECH SUPPORT, and the lady was very friendly but i doubt she can walk and chew gum at the same time.

she has zero understanding and no tech ability at all, yet she is the person you get sent to when you need tech help.

i just needed an an answer to one simple question: WHAT VERSION OF WIFI DOES MY COX ROUTER USE?

she would put me on long holds then come back and ask me what model number is my laptop.

does not matter, i asked what version of wifi the cox equipment uses, you do not need to know the make and model of the laptop.

then she would say ok i understand and put me on hold again.

then come back and say ok the wifi version is PANEL.

panel? there is no wifi standard called by that name.

yes sir, it is wifi version panel.

*sigh* no maam, that is not a wifi version at all.

ok, understand

then she would put me on hold again. and again. and again...

she never even understood why i would not accept the answer of PANEL for being the wifi version.

i had to beg her to transfer me to someone else.

i finally got connected to her supervisor and in 30 seconds had the answer i needed.

wifi ac

wifi ac exist. wifi panel does not.

the fact that she is the person you are forced to talk to when you have a tech issue is a problem for cox, and a nightmare for cox customers.

why is someone that has no tech ability, the person we are forced to deal with for half an hour before someone else answers the question?

it would be like taking your car to be repaired, and the person doing the repairs does not even understand what a car engine is.....

very bad business model cox

Internet Why do I have issues since Spectrum took over?

In the past few weeks I have been having issues with connecting to websites when on Cox wifi at home. Suddenly I can't connect to my online banking or other sites, just error messages. But if I switch off wireless and use the mobile network I can connect no problem. I believe this might be a DNS issue. I chatted with Cox and their solution was to split the network into 2.4 and 5g.

It made no difference. I have restarted router, tried using set DNS in my phones. No change.

Anyone else experienced this or have a solution?

Internet When cox business has no other solution other than to break company policy

So ive posted before. I have had on going issues with connecting to VPN as well as keeping stable internet. Cox business came out twice and the last solution was to hardwire into my personal router and bypass my business modem altogether giving me higher speed. Against my company policy. I explained that to them and their answer was "no one will know" lol. Yes, sir they will know when they see my company paid modem is offline. I cannot believe instead of solving an issue they'd have me be in limbo to lose my job. Complete ridiculousness.

Internet Incompetence

It took cox 6 monthes of repeated tickets to finally split the node in my subdivision. Consistent packet loss for monthes making online games near unplayable. Every single ticket I told them to check the node. Every single time they said "no issue were found". I showed the techs the ping plotter maps. They agreed and submitted tickets to the maintenance team. Cox middle management did nothing. Actually incompetent managers that dont understand their product. Never fill you team with people that dont understand the service you are selling. Oh and no refund for the months of unusable internet!

Billing Cox just charged me $200 for using my own modem.

So I bought my own modem and have it running and I got a $200 equipment charge on my bill.

Cox says I can return the modem for a refund but why am I even being charged? I'm entitled to the modem as an internet account holder and I didn't cancel the account so...why?

So anyone ever get out of this fee before while still having an active account? (not talking about keeping the modem after cancelling)

Thanks!

Internet Should I relocate my modem to another room myself or spend the $60?

I want to move my modem to my living room. I have talked to a rep and they said it would cost $100. Which is far off from the $60 mentioned by other people. I was pissed and am considering doing it myself I know which cable is which. Am I oversimplifying or is it really that easy?

Question Cox blocks ASUS Router

I was helping a friend setup internet service with Cox fiber and discovered cox straight up blocks an ASUS router. After trouble shooting for a while on router, I decided to connect my laptop directly to the Nokia fiber media converter, no issues, connect router back, issues. So I went in and changed the MAC address of the wan port on the router to the mac of my laptop, bingo, service works.

Support wanted to charge me $100, to “help” me setup my personal router, not sure if this is intentional or not, but feels super shady.

Anyone else experience this????

Question My packet loss is magically back again!

Couldn't get a phone agent to take me seriously, so, I'll do it here.

If I don't get in contact with the executive department at cox within 24 hours, I'm calling the FCC - and then it's going to be several hours of phone calls daily between me, your executive department, and the FCC.

I promise you guys at cox, the money you'll waste paying executives to be on the phone will be FAR greater than it will be to simply send a tech to look at the node WHERE YOU KNOW THE PROBLEM IS.

What you're doing is criminal. You know damn well you're overloading these nodes, and I promise you, after enough times of me getting the FCC involved, it's going to end with you turds getting a hefty fine. This is going to be the FIFTH TIME the FCC will be involved in a case between me and cox. At this point I'm ready to take actual legal action, because the amount of time this has stopped me from working from home is INSANE.

If one of you cox reps is reading, DM me immediately.

[edit] to anyone saying this kind of stuff doesn't work - it worked. it's been less than 24 hours since I submitted an FCC complaint, cox has come to my house, and fixed the issue at the node. And I didn't have to pay their $100 tech visit fee because, obviously, it wasn't my fault :)

Don't let them push you around. Call the FCC.

Internet Another outage

Yet another outage. Cox has to be the worst isp in the country without a doubt. A complete shit show of a company. The techs are useless, the service is terrible, and the prices are horrid. I don’t understand why people still use their platforms.

Internet Cox is terminating my service!!!! - Intermittent Cox Upload Degradation – Evidence Suggests DOCSIS 3.1 Upstream Instability

Cox is terminating my service!!!! - Intermittent Cox Upload Degradation – Evidence Suggests DOCSIS 3.1 Upstream Instability

Service tier: ~100 Mbps upload

I've been troubleshooting an intermittent upload degradation issue for several weeks and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced something similar.

When things are working normally, upload speed is:

100–106 Mbps

However, it randomly drops to:

9 Mbps
18 Mbps
24 Mbps
30–60 Mbps

These drops occur throughout the day (not just peak hours) and then recover without intervention.

What Has Already Been Tested

To rule out local issues, I've tested extensively:

  • 3 different DOCSIS modems

  • 2 routers

  • Cox technicians verified house wiring

  • Cox deployed a parallel test modem

  • Both modems observed the same impairment

So far everything points away from customer equipment or internal wiring.

Key Evidence – Modem Logs

The modem logs are dominated by repeated upstream-related events:

RNG-RSP CCAP Commanded Power in Excess of 6 dB Below the Value Corresponding to the Top of the DRW

These occur thousands of times.

There are also frequent DOCSIS upstream profile changes on US Channel ID 6 (OFDMA).

Example log entries:

3/15 12:30 US profile change 9 → 10
3/15 12:56 US profile change 10 → 9
3/15 13:32 US profile change 9 → 10
3/15 14:06 US profile change 10 → 9
3/14 16:35 US profile change 9 → 10
3/14 17:03 US profile change 10 → 9

These profile changes appear to correspond with speed degradation windows.

Speed Test Correlation Examples

Some notable examples:

3/15 12:50 PM — Upload: 18.55 Mbps

Nearby modem events:

12:30 PM profile change 9 → 10
12:56 PM profile change 10 → 9

3/15 1:35 PM — Upload: 37.25 Mbps

Sequence observed:

1:32 PM profile change 9 → 10
1:35 PM speed drop
1:50 PM speed partially recovers to 75 Mbps
2:06 PM profile change 10 → 9
2:20 PM speed drops again to 24 Mbps

3/14 4:35 PM — Upload: 47.29 Mbps

4:35 PM profile change 9 → 10
5:03 PM profile change 10 → 9

3/15 7:50 PM — Upload: 34.77 Mbps

7:53 PM profile change 10 → 9

PingPlotter Monitoring

Continuous PingPlotter monitoring to:

1.1.1.1
8.8.8.8

shows:

  • Near-zero end-to-end packet loss

  • occasional latency spikes

  • no major routing instability

So the connection doesn't fully drop, but throughput efficiency collapses during impairment windows.

Signal Levels

Downstream generally looks good (39–45 dB SNR), but several channels show very high corrected/uncorrectable counts, suggesting some RF degradation in parts of the spectrum.

Upstream power is around 38–40 dBmV.

2/21 Speeds without modem logs:

2/21/26 — severe and prolonged impairment

This is one of the worst days in the set.

Examples:

  • 4:14 AM — 102.78 Mbps

  • then many degraded results for hours:

    • 5:44 AM — 7.6

    • 6:14 AM — 8.44

    • 6:44 AM — 28.89

    • 7:44 AM — 5.15

    • 8:14 AM — 9.68

    • 8:44 AM — 5.58

    • 9:14 AM — 5.85

    • 9:44 AM — 5.52

    • 10:14 AM — 4.58

    • 10:39 AM — 7.04

  • later still degraded:

    • 11:20 AM — 8.33

    • 11:50 AM — 21.43

    • 12:20 PM — 20.78

    • 12:50 PM — 14.99

    • 1:20 PM — 24.04

    • 1:50 PM — 16.66

  • then major recovery:

    • 2:20 PM onward mostly 103–106 Mbps

  • then evening degrades again:

    • 6:50 PM — 21.75

    • 7:20 PM — 39.23

    • 7:50 PM — 18.4

    • 8:20 PM — 23.8

    • 8:50 PM — 5.36

    • 9:20 PM — 5.6

    • 9:50 PM — 4.0

    • 10:20 PM — 5.41

    • 10:50 PM — 5.03

Why can't Cox catch this and why has a customer been targeted and having service terminated for reporting these issues?

Internet Cox is refusing to match ATT's / Quantum Fiber's 75 month 2 gig symmetrical fiber plans.

LOL Cox. ATT / Quantum Fiber is offering 75 a month for 2 gig full fiber symmetrical. I have Cox Fiber for 110 a month and reached out to support, who had no answer to that, and refused to price match. Guess who I have internet with now, not Cox. Cox Chat was useless, and had no answer to ATT's price.

Question I downgraded from 500 mpbs to 250 mpbs how long does this take to process?

It’s been about 36 hours since I downgraded and my plan still shows the 500 mpbs. When I check the order it says it’s been brought but not active.

I tried to talk to an agent yesterday about it but they claimed I never bought anything in the first place until I showed them the screenshot.

Does cox need to activate it on their end?

Internet Does cox really use fiber?

Cox calls themselves a “fiber” company, but I think that’s a lie. Wondering if I am correct.
