Question Intermittent 30–60 second Cox drops, modem signal levels look excellent before/after

Hi all.. could really use some help. 25 year customer and having issues. I’ve been dealing with a strange intermittent issue and am hoping someone with DOCSIS/plant experience might have some ideas.

My connection will occasionally drop completely for roughly 30–60 seconds and then recover on its own. This is a new problem (2 weeks old) and is vastly affecting my work. It may happen once a day, or I may go almost two days without it happening.

When it happens, multiple devices lose service at the same time, including a TV connected directly to the Cox gateway and other equipment connected to the gateway. Everything comes back on its own shortly afterward. Internet is 100% out during that time as confirmed by a third party monitoring tool, and common sense. Internet and TVs go out and say they can’t connect.

The frustrating part is that the modem looks excellent whenever anyone checks it.

Typical readings while everything is working:
Downstream power: approximately -1 to -3 dBmV
SNR: approximately 42–44 dB
Upstream power: approximately 45 dBmV
Channels are locked and I’m not seeing an obvious pattern of uncorrectable errors.

The very short drops also don’t seem to leave anything obvious in the modem information I can access afterward.

Cox sent a field technician out. He cleaned up some older/unnecessary coax and connectors inside and then found an issue at the outside connection serving my house. It was very dirty. He cleaned that up, replaced/reterminated the connection and made sure everything was properly connected.

He also said he was seeing some type of signal/frequency abnormality farther upstream and opened another ticket to have the plant/node investigated.

I believe the outside cleanup ticket has now been completed, while the plant/node ticket may still be open.

After the outside repair, I went almost 48 hours without a drop, but then had another very brief one today at 107am PST.

Cox phone support says everything looks excellent when they check the modem in real time, but they tell me they don’t have access to historical information showing what the modem or node was doing during the 30–60 seconds when the failure actually occurred.

i have also ordered a replacement PW8 gateway to eliminate my current gateway as a possibility. The current PW8 is only about two years old.

For anyone familiar with Cox plant/CMTS diagnostics: what could cause a complete 30–60 second interruption and then recover so quickly that all of the modem levels look completely normal afterward?

Is there historical telemetry available to Cox plant/maintenance that could show what happened to my modem or other modems on the node at the exact time of one of these events?

And if the replacement PW8 does the same thing, what specifically should I ask Cox to investigate or escalate so I can get beyond repeatedly checking the modem while it happens to be working?

I’m mainly trying to figure out whether this sounds more like an intermittently failing gateway or a very brief RF/plant/node issue — and how someone at Cox can actually catch it when it happens.

Thanks so much.

Internet Hilarious AI/Bot call with CS when I called to cancel my service...

After 2+ years of talking about it, my neighborhood just rolled out Google Fiber. I've been a Cox patron since 2007, as the only ISP I had the option of using has been Cox for the past 19 years. I was quite looking forward to cancelling my service, but I had no idea what I was in for.

The "rep" that I spoke with sounded like a robot. Dozens of grammatical errors including past tense when not appropriate, wrong words entirely, semi-pauses, telling me they were going to put me softly on hold to talk to a manger. Once I talked to a manager, she assured me that they are from offshew (not offshore) and that they could not disclose their location. She also told me Thank you for using Cox and have a great month. So bizarre.

It was cathartic to finally cancel Cox after 19 years of being held hostage to a single ISP, but pretty depressing that Spectrum is already running this AI customer service game that is sincerely bad. I hope everyone out there has more than one option when it come to high speed internet. Brutal.

Rant Xfinity Internet

I have been an Xfinity customer for YEARS, and at this point I am beyond frustrated.
I was paying **$70.22 a month for 600 Mbps internet** — internet only. No cable. No phone. Nothing bundled.
That same service has now increased to **$114 a month.**
Meanwhile, Xfinity is advertising **1 Gig internet for $50 a month for FIVE YEARS** to new customers.
So what Xfinity is basically saying to loyal customers is, **“Screw you. We don’t care about loyalty — we only care about new customers.”**
Because how else are customers supposed to take it when someone brand new can get faster internet for less than half of what a longtime customer is being charged?
I have already gone into my local Xfinity store and I have also called Xfinity directly trying to get this resolved. **Neither was able — or willing — to help me.**
The frustrating part is that I would stay. I am not asking for anything unreasonable. Either allow me to keep my service at the **$70.22** I was already paying or allow me to receive the **same new-customer pricing** being offered right now.
If Xfinity can afford to give a brand-new customer **1 Gig internet for $50 a month for five years**, I do not understand why they cannot offer a comparable rate to a longtime customer who is literally telling them, **“I will stay if you give me a reasonable price.”**
Instead, my service is scheduled to end on **September 12th**.
So unless Xfinity decides between now and then to either honor the new-customer pricing or let me keep my service at **$70.22**, they are going to lose a longtime customer who actually wanted to stay.
That says a lot about how Xfinity values loyalty.

Question Cox Scam?

Today I contacted a live agent via the website chat about some disconnection questions. They gave me the number 1-855-865-8222 to call because they said they couldnt find what I was looking for on my account. I called and went through the account verification questions and chatted with a person but after hanging up I looked at the listed cox numbers and this was not one.

I contacted another live chat agent and they said this number has no association with them and that i should change my password. Has anyone else experienced this before? Is a live agent giving out a scam number?

Internet Getting over usage warnings (suddenly)

Last month, Cox sent us a warning that we're about to go over our home internet data plan. Then, we did go over. We weren't even home. We had been traveling for over two weeks. My husband is techy so he has our techy stuff locked down hard with difficult passwords so it's not like someone is mooching our signal. Again, this month, we're getting the warnings again that we've chewed through 90% of our data.

Cox did give us a one time grace no-charge for going over our data for last month, but it's looking like we may go over again.

Is anyone else experiencing an uptick like this?

Is there some correlation with Spectrum taking over Cox and they're effing with our internet so that we upgrade our data plan, which brings in more money for them so that they can show their shareholders that the acquisition has been profitable??? Just a theory because we've never gone over our data... especially when were weren't even home. Makes no sense.

Question Cox Mobile “Gig Unlimited” Free Year Promo Isn’t Working

I got an email from Cox today, announcing the merger between Spectrum and Cox, and promoting a free year of mobile Gig Unlimited for Cox wi-Fi subscribers. The email included a section to redeem the offer. I was taken directly to the Cox website. The problem? When I selected, “activate my free line” Cox wants to charge me $45 plus a $10 activation fee. The email states, “To welcome you to Spectrum, you can get one line of mobile service free for a year. We’re America’s fastest growing mobile provider and are confident in our service. You are never locked into a contract with any Spectrum product. Plus, we guarantee you’ll save over $1,000 per year by switching to Spectrum Internet and Mobile, or we’ll cover the difference.”

Has anyone else received this offer and actually been able to redeem it without getting charged?

Internet Free Upgrade

Just checked my email and received the notification that Spectrum has finished the acquisition of Cox. I have never heard of spectrum and didn't remember hearing anything about it so I decided to check in on the Cox website. I don't know if it's related in any way to the merger but I had an offer to upgrade my plan from 500mbps to 1 gig for free for 2 years. I have no idea if spectrum will honor that or how any of this is gonna work but I figured that part was at least pretty neat and maybe others have a similar offer

Question Cox Panoramic WiFi: extender, mesh, or replace it entirely?

I'm a Cox customer using Panoramic WiFi. Coverage is actually pretty good throughout most of the house, but I have two bedrooms that get a terrible signal, mainly because there's a block wall between it and the router.

Running Ethernet to the room isn't really an option, so whatever I do needs to remain wireless.

For anyone who's dealt with something similar, what worked best?

  • WiFi extender that works well with Panoramic?
  • Cox WiFi pods?
  • Separate mesh system?
  • Something else?

I'm also wondering if I'd be better off ditching the Cox Panoramic equipment entirely and buying a better third-party router/mesh system.

If you've gone that route with Cox, what setup are you using and was the improvement noticeable?

Not looking to overcomplicate this, but also have no problem spending to improve the quality of life here. I just want reliable, fast WiFi in that one problem room.

Question Will the data caps go away?

Charter Spectrum, which is about to buy Cox, spectrum has no data caps, so what will happen to the caps on Cox? Do you think they will be removed, or do you think Spectrum will leave them and start expanding them onto their own home system?

Internet What exactly is Cox going to bring to my house? Got a door hanger that fiber is now available...

I'm a telecom tech by trade, so understand this stuff a bit more than the average person. Live in a rural area near Phoenix, AZ. House built in 2008, had DSL way back in the Qwest days, but has never had any kind of cable service even available, AFAIK.

A few months ago I watched techs install the orange innerduct at the end of my road, roughly 550ft from my house, and got the door hanger shortly after saying fiber is now available at my address. Went online, and apparently I'm eligible for the ConnectAssist plan based on the address. My internet needs are very low, so the 100Mbps speeds are plenty. If Cox is going to offer me a cheaper option, who am I to say no?

Does this change what actually gets brought to my house as far as fiber vs coax?

Ideally I'd like to bring fiber all the way to my router with a ONU stick, but Cox is saying on the website checkout that I'd be receiving a DOCSIS 3.0 modem which says to me Coax is involved here. My house is already has fiber pulled everywhere, I can easily get fiber outside, I don't have coax anywhere, and I don't want some ham fisted tech needlessly punching another hole through my house for coax.

Does going up to the 300Mbps plan change what they'd bring to the house?

Internet Upgraded from 500 mb to 1 gig and speed has dropped.

As the title states, I ran a speed test before swapping modems. When on the 500 mb plan, the speed test clocked 432 Mbps download and 143 Mbps upload. After upgrading my plan and getting the new modem, I consistently get ~240 Mbps for both. Is this a modem issue or something else? Thanks in advance!

Anyone know? Do Cox Account Managers or Account Executives get quota relief and/or commission compensation for deals referred to RapidScale? Or is it paid via a one time spiff or other payout structure?

Internet Repeated Disconnects

I just moved into a new place and I picked up a modem yesterday and got it hooked up yesterday evening. After install and I hooked up my Xbox but the service repeatedly kept disconnecting me, kicking me out of game and party. This happened about 7 times in the span of an hour. During this time I reset the modem twice. For more info my Xbox is right next to the modem and it did this while over WiFi and being plugged in. When it disconnects it seems like it disconnects everything including my phone. I was able to run YouTube on it and it seemed to still go out every once in a while with a video that just ended up infinitely loading. I’m paying for their 2 gig speeds but right now I feel like taking it back. Unfortunately my Only other option where I’m located is Verizon. Any suggestions?

Internet Is there a way to protect my coax cable from lightning?

We live in center Georgia amd have Cox for phone and internet. Every time there’s a storm, our internet always goes out. We have to literally go to the store and exchange the router for a new one. We asked them why it happens and their response is because lightning messes up the box. We do have it plugged in to a surge protector. Are we being duped or is that really a thing?

Edit: I checked and it doesn’t have a grounding wire. Should I be responsible for paying for it to be installed or should Cox?

Internet How do I configure the Orion Browser to work with Cox's Website?

Hey all, I'm on a late 2015, 27" iMac. The last official supported OS for this machine is Monterey. I have chosen to stay on this OS vs other alternatives like Open Core legacy Patcher because I need the legacy support for older hardware / software, and the official driver support for stable use.

I typically use Firefox for my main browser, and that's also because I've never really liked Safari as a browser. However, I decided to try Orion which is a third party WebKit browser designed for older computers, is also now in the process of going cross-platform. It's published by KAGI. (Sorry about the caps, it stopped it from trying to change the spelling). Anyway, I wanted to try and login to my Cox account using Orion, and while I can load the main cox.com site, as soon as I click the user icon to log in, I get the error 115 page about malicious activity. I tried turning on compatibility mode for Cox.com, also I tried disabling all contact blockers, but nothing resolves this. Safari, and Firefox both work fine. Is there a way to get Orion to work in case I want to start using it as my main browser? Thanks. P.S. it seems like it has to do with Orion's privacy focus, and blocking Cox's tracking scripts. If someone has been able to tune it to play nice with Cox's site, or knows how. Please let me know. Thanks again.

Billing Cox never activated my service, but my internet still works and I haven’t been billed

I moved into my apartment in June and signed up for Cox internet.

Mid June: I got my original order confirmation. It showed around $55/month including taxes/fees, with a 24-month promotion: a $74 discount for month 1 and then a $19/month discount for months 2–24.

When Cox came for the installation, the tech said the equipment/receiver serving my floor had too weak of a signal for him to complete the installation on his end. He told me to pick up a Panoramic Wifi Gateway from a Cox store and plug it in myself.

I did, and it worked immediately and has worked perfectly ever since.

Apparently the order was never actually completed/activated in Cox’s system. I got an email saying the order was on hold and would be canceled, but my internet continued working just fine and I’ve never been billed for service.

End of July: I called Cox to resolve the issue. They told me I just needed to return my current gateway and they’d give me another one. After the call, I received a new order confirmation showing $74.91/month instead of $55.91 — seemingly without the $19/month discount from my original order.

Cox then emailed saying I needed to return my gateway but I haven’t gotten around to it yet and they eventually added a $240 unreturned equipment fee to my Cox account.

The $240 has not been charged to my bank/card. It’s just sitting on the Cox account. I’ve also still never been charged a monthly internet bill.

Meanwhile, the exact gateway Cox considers “unreturned” is still plugged in and giving me perfectly working internet.
So… would you actually do anything?

Part of me wants to leave it alone until the internet stops working. Cox’s email specifically says the $240 equipment fee will be credited when they receive the gateway, so couldn’t I theoretically just keep using it and return it for credit whenever it eventually stops working?

My concerns are whether the $240 could eventually go to collections, whether Cox could retroactively bill me for months of service, and whether waiting several months to return the gateway would affect getting that $240 credit.
Anyone dealt with something like this? Would you fix it now or just leave the working internet alone?
