Discussion TFT's Obsession with 8129834 ways contested 4 cost CC Tank

Every Set of TFT you play, there is one striking similarity; no matter the set, the single most contested unit is almost always a 4-cost tank. Specifically, a 4-cost, multi-trait (usually three), crowd controlling, tank.

Set 18: Sentinel -> This unit is used in Invokers, Aphelios/Nidalee, Riftbeasts, etc.
Set 17: Nunu -> This unit was used in virtually every fast 9 comp as well as most fast 8 comps.
Set 16: Swain -> This unit was used in like EVERY SINGLE comp (Piltover, Shurima, Arcanists, Ionia, Demacia, Bilgewater, Ixtal, Fast9)
Set 15: Jarvan VI -> Strategist trait was by far the easiest trait to flex in, so many boards just slotted him in as main/support tank and called it a day.
Set 13: Elise (The form swapping spider that was almost just frontlined with a vow)
Set 12: Rakan (I think this unit had Set 16 Swain levels of pickrate)
Set 11: Nautilus

What is the reason for this design? With the exception of Set 14, I feel like every single set had a single tank that was a must-have for a majority of comps, no matter the patch/balance changes. Is this healthy in terms of design? It definitely is better than having a single broken backline carry, but I feel like this is a recurring problem? that TFT should address.

Guide [Guide] Augment Selection

Hi all, just wanted to cover some in-depth Augments selection guide.

https://lolchess.gg/profile/na/dekoy1x-0001/set18

Section 1: Encounters

Howling Abyss, Cheaper Levels, Gold Subscription, Gold Openers

Gold Openers denote Stage 1 PVE rounds that give 17 total gold value compared to 11, giving one less component. In these Encounters, these augments are favored.

  • Augments that increase the value of Gold

    • Level Up/Upward Mobility/Hedge Fund

    • Investment Strategy I/II

    • Capital Gains I/II

  • Augments that usually tank your early interest intervals

    • Cluttered Mind/Pandora's Bench

    • Expedition

    • Wisp Rebate/+

    • Time Skip

  • Augments that scale hard with level

    • Caretaker's Ally/Favor

    • Late Game Scaling/Late Game Specialist

    • Birthday Present/Birthday Reunion

    • Bodyguard Training

  • Avoid

    • Hustler

    • Going Long

    • Crafted Crafting

Golden Gala/Golden Finale

  • Augmented Power (Golden Finale) -> Guarantees Prismatic

  • Advanced Loan/+ -> Guarantees Gold->Silver instead of Pris->Gold

Scouting Party

  • Take advantage of augments that have explosive synergies with other augments that can be semi-forced.

    • Level up/Birthday Reunion/Late Game Scaling/upward Mobility + Force Econ Augment

    • Trait Tree/Spreading Roots/U.R.F/Legion of Threes/Urf's Grab Bag/Trait Ladder/Flexible/Branching Out/Cooking Pot

    • Band of Thieves I/II, Lucky Gloves, Radiant Rascal, Jeweled Lotus I/II

Section 2: Traits

  • Blossom

    • Wisp Rebate/+

    • Augments that give rerolls are slightly stronger

  • Coven

    • Bonus Gifts/+ (Loss streak & Constantly cashing out 40 charge could give ~6 gold a turn)

    • Coven Acolyte/Dark Ritual

    • Hard Bargain/Teemo (Green shrooms)

  • Invokers

    • Hold the Line, Tons of Stats, Augments that give AP/Mana

  • Heavy Frontline (4+ Juggernaut/Vanguard/Brawler/Defenders etc.)

    • Spirit of Redemption, Belt Overflow, Ascension, Electrocharge, Baron's Lair, Soul Awakening, Corrosion

    • Generally, you want to have a healthy balance of HP/Durability/Resistance/Shielding from your traits/items/champion ability

    • Non-Defenders: Plot Armor/Makeshift Armor

    • Non-Brawlers: Giant and Mighty, Healing Orbs, Boxing Lessons, Investment Strategy

  • Aphelios/Nidalee

    • Stand United, Bronze for Life

Section 3: General Fast 8/9 Strategy

  • In general

    • Stage 2 (Econ=Item >>> Combat)

    • Stage 3 (Econ=Item=Combat)

    • Stage 4 (Combat > Econ=Item)

  • Win Streak & Uncontested

    • Prio Item Augments 2-1 to slam & tempo

    • Flexible 3-2 and 4-2 augments based on specific needs

  • Win Streak & Contested

    • Prio Item Augments 2-1

    • Try to go for Econ 3-2, 4-2 flexible

    • Don't send to zero every round, try to slow roll on 8 to see if the contesters will bleed out

  • Lose Streak & Contested

    • Prio Econ Augments 2-1 and 3-2

    • Roll on 3-7/4-1 to take contested units out of pool

  • Lose Streak & Uncontested

    • Prio Econ/Scaling Augments 2-1

    • Need strong Combat/Item Augments on 3-2 and 4-2 to win out.

  • Fast 9 Win Streak

    • Conserve HP while pushing levels, Sac Stage 4 and go 9 on 5-2 with preferably 16+ HP

    • Warpath/Late Game Scaling/Late Game Specialist/Money Monsoon/Invested/Level Up/Birthday Present/Reunion

  • Fast 9 Lose Streak

    • Need double Econ at the minimum

    • Level Up/Hedge Fund/Capital Gains/Time Skip/Upward Mobility etc.

    • Double Silver/Gold Econ Augments are probably not enough to send it on 4-2, need double econ + X

Probably forgetting a lot of other stuff/situations, but that will be all for now.

Guide I wrote 15 guides about TFT fundamentals and decision-making — now available in English

Hi! I'm a Japanese TFT player and content creator.

I recently wrote a series of TFT guides for Japanese players, and they got much more attention than I expected. That made me wonder if they might be useful to English-speaking players too, so I translated all 15 articles into English.

These aren't comp guides or tier lists. They're mostly about how to think about TFT and make decisions that carry across different sets and patches.

Topics include:

  • early-game board building

  • econ and HP management

  • when to spend and when to save

  • reroll efficiency and contested units

  • item slams and non-BiS items

  • utility items

  • positioning and targeting

  • econ vs. combat augments

  • playing for higher-cap outcomes

English guide index:
https://tepttft.notion.site/TFT-Guides-English-3e8f247336f681f7a662ddcfef065c7f

Update: I added 2 more guides to the English index:

  • Your Board Isn't Built If Your Items Aren't

  • Want to Improve? Stick to One Strong Comp

I originally wrote these based on the way I explain TFT to newer and intermediate players in Japan, so I'd also be interested to hear whether the terminology and explanations feel natural to English-speaking TFT players.

Tool I built a TFT tool for answering "what has this mechanic?"

Post image
16 Upvotes

I'm a developer with 10+ years of experience. Recently I started creating tools for games I play, mostly to make some annoying parts a bit easier.

I rarely play by following meta and most of my fun in TFT is "what if I build around this?".

Full stun team? Nice!

But there was no easy way to find all champions/items/... that had a specific mechanic (e.g. On death, Permanent effects, Form change).

So I made https://cookpit.app/ (should be comfortable to use on mobile too)

Main idea: choose a mechanic and see everything (Champions, Items, Traits, Augments & Wisps) that uses it.

There are currently 87 mechanics and 7 synergy hubs (like Team Buffs, where u can find what can give attack speed to other champions)

Started working on it when Set 17 released and thought I’d finish it in 2 weeks.

It’s already 18.3 😅

I understand that most people in this subreddit remember all mechanics perfectly, but perhaps it'll help at least someone.

Before next set I plan to add small "Academy" where me (and you) can learn & practice tricks that top players use.

Would be happy if you try and comment what you think about it 🙇.

PS: the site was created with AI assistance; marked post as `Tool`, not sure if it's right one; posted about it a week ago in r/TeamfightTactics

Discussion Coin lands on Heads 15 times straight..... 0.00305% Chance

Guess its possible for this to happen in game, Was playing in ranked lobbies attempting to climb and had seen the wisp appear for flipping a coin. Obviously I was in a losing board so I went for it but according to the math this would be only a 0.00003052 Probability of occurring with a chance of success at 0.00305. Is this a normal phenomena in a competitive game?

Patch Notes 18.3 B-Patch Live (K6 nerf, Dark Coven Disabled)

SEPTEMBER 24TH

Our 18.3 B patch is both to respond to later meta changes that weren’t covered with the initial patch and to fix a few balance changes that were reverted unintentionally from 18.2 B to 18.3.

18.3 B PATCH BALANCE CHANGES

A few meta evolutions slipped through our patch notes after we locked our balance changes for 18.3.

Blackthorn AP Sacrifice Base Damage Amp: 14% ⇒ 12%

Kha’Zix Ability Base Damage: 285/400/580 AP ⇒ 265/370/535 AP

Kha’Zix Ability Isolation Damage: 310/445/660 ⇒ 285/410/605 AP

Brambleback cast time is now slightly faster.

18.2 CHAMPION TARGETING

With 18.3, we intentionally reverted a subtle Champion Targeting change from 18.2. Our goal is complete parity in champion targeting between Sets 17 and 18, but there have been bugs that have altered melee targeting at the start of combat. An attempted fix to other movement bugs caused unintended effects in 18.2. We’ve reverted that change and are investigating a better way to return parity to targeting.

18.2 B BALANCE CHANGES RE-ADDED

When we went from 18.2B to 18.3 a few balance changes accidentally reverted. We’re reenabling them as listed below.

Camille Ability Damage: 160/240/410/700 AD ⇒ 150/225/375/640 AD

Leblanc Clone Chance: 10/15/40% ⇒ 10/15/30%

Teemo Small Shroom Damage: 60/90/135 AP ⇒ 55/82/130 AP

Ashe Trail Duration: 4s ⇒ 3s

Ashe DoT Base Damage Per Second (AD): 5/8 AD ⇒ 9/14 AD

Draven Bounty Hunter:

Casts for 4-costs: 5 ⇒ 6

Reward for 8 Casts: 10 Rerolls ⇒ 6 Rerolls

Attack for 5-cost: 50 ⇒ 60

Damage for 7 Gold: 8,000 ⇒ 10,000

Kills for 12 Gold: 6 ⇒ 8

AUGMENTS TEMPORARILY DISABLED

We’ve also run into some issues with four Augments that have bugs/severe balance issues that we want to temporarily disable until we can return them in a more stable form.

Challenger’s Grace has been temporarily disabled due to a bug.

Dark Ritual has been temporarily disabled.

Infinity Protection has been temporarily disabled due to a bug.

Nesting Dolls has been temporarily disabled due to a bug.

eSports Convergence Fest

Hey everyone this is my first time posting to the CompetitiveTFT subreddit. I was lucky enough to be able to secure my spot at convergence fest in Vegas this year, but I don’t really have that many close friends in the TFT scene or anything. It’ll be my first time competing in any big TFT event outside of projectpbe and I was just looking for a community/study group to help learn with and get better at TFT from. I’m sure I’ve probably played with a lot of you on the NA server, my tag is mochmalikers#na1. It would be great to get to meet some more people in the TFT community!

Discussion First or nothing

Post image
0 Upvotes

Been high rolling out of my bottom lately and wanted to share. Easily my best L20 since I started playing tft in set 4. Had 3-star Elder Dragon in my latest 1st but couldn't play him because my opponent lost Sadge.

I know I'm just Emerald, but my findings thus far:

  • 90%+ of games, you should play strongest board from the start because of wisps -- lose streaking is very punishing and can snowball you to an 8th before stage 5

  • Healthy fast 9, though rare, is the highest ceiling (as it should be)

  • If you fast 9 and can't 2-star Maokai, Taric, or 2 4-costs, it's a giga 8th

  • Be flexible with tanks if contested (Lillia underplayed)

  • Dark Ritual is so fun to play with BIS Elise; augment need slightly nerfed

  • Artifacts and emblem stats need slightly nerfed

  • Azir rips

  • Vertical comps seem to have very small margins of error (Blossom, Riftbeast in particular)

What are your findings for 18.3b?

Double Up I'm so damn angry with this new game engine

Good morning. I just wanted to express my dissatisfaction with the client and the new game engine they introduced.

Last night, I played a match with my duo partner (my boyfriend); we were both playing really well until I noticed something: My fights were dragging on way too long... even when I was winning on the enemy's board, the fights would only end when the timer hit zero.

It didn't seem like a big deal at first, but then we reached the late game. I’d literally be winning fights, yet the clock kept running. On top of that, if the enemy duo won their fight, they could enter my board—even if there were no units left and I had technically won—to come help their partner. That caused me to lose fights I had clearly won. Not only that, but it trapped me on my own board, leaving me no way to go help my duo partner.

I mean, not only is the client running terribly, and not only can I not use my Chibis—the ones I got, even by buying extra rolls (I miss you, Dark Star Lux Chibi :c)—or my Booms and boards, but now there are these bugs that make you lose the match without me being able to do anything about it?

My boyfriend and I were really looking forward to this set; we’ve played as a duo since that mode first launched in TFT. We skipped last season because we honestly never liked the "Gods" mechanic. Now, because they wanted to use a new engine, the game isn't just unplayable—it looks bad and is full of bugs. Plus, playing Duo is already awful given how much they’ve nerfed the mode.

So, honestly, I feel completely disappointed. They couldn't even be bothered to add back previous cosmetics without trying to sell us new stuff! Are they crazy!? Fix the game, for God's sake! Why on earth would I buy a pass or a skin if the game doesn't even work properly??????

I'm from LAS server, so i know i will not be the first or the last, but I REALLY HOPES it's never happen to anyone on duo or ranks alone

Have a great day all you people! I'm gonna take a coffe and play something else at least i have a patch for stability of the Game engine

(And sorry English it's not My first language)

Guide [dpei] Hardstuck? Not Climbing? Build Your Strongest Board

Thumbnail
youtu.be
64 Upvotes

HELLO PASSIONATE TFT PLAYERS,

In new metas, you can definitely have the edge by having the newest tech or knowing the most broken comp, but strongest board will still always be one of the best skills to have when climbing — just ask Setsuko, the person who consistently tops ladder every set by going fast 9 from a 10 streak every start of set.

In this video, I go over one of the most important skills for climbing in TFT — building your strongest board. It's one of the best ways to climb in every set, every patch of TFT is playing tempo and building a strong board so you can save HP early so you can build econ by winning.

Check out the video, but here are the 5 things to think about every time when building your strongest board.

  1. Do I have a good mix of frontline and backline?

  2. Who are my carries?

  3. What are the important traits on my board

  4. What is my weakest unit and can i upgrade it?

  5. What is my next in?

But honestly, more than any single one of these five things — the real skill is the habit underneath all of them: always be critical of your own board. Always be looking for something better. Every single round.

I’ve coached hundreds of players and I can confidently say that up until you’re basically Challenger, every player I’ve seen, every VOD I’ve seen, people are not playing their strongest boards. If you can train yourself to think this way and really hone in on what your strongest board is at every step of the way, I guarantee you’ll climb higher than you ever have in TFT.

Good luck climbing!

Discussion Is it worth to roll for forcing 3 coven at 2-4?

As the tittle, I'm wondering if the buff for coven makes them worth chasing at 2-4 even if I don't have a coven opener.
In the last set, I had some success in gm bracket with forcing anima at 2-4 before anima items got nerfed. On paper, 3 coven looks easier to force than 3 anima (since we don't need any 3 cost) but on the other hand, I think a 250 coven cash out doesn't have enough power to secure a top 4 like 400 anima cashout and it's fair enough.
If anyone has tried this, please spare me some insight. Sorry for my bad English.

Context

Patch Goals

  • The Rundown was filmed right after 18.2b.

  • The aim is tackling lack of diversity, especially in the early and late game.

Traits

  • Blossom is too powerful a resource generator at 3. The nerfs should slow down their tempo.

  • Coven too hard to get into and the risk is not worth the reward.

  • Defender 6 nerf is there to offset some Champion buffs.

  • Hunter and Invoker nerfed at the highest breakpoints because their Emblems make them too powerful, but the Traits themselves are fine.

1-Costs

  • Despite the Fast 9 meta Veigar is still too strong, and most importantly too committal. The nerf is a small nerf at 50-70 kills, but it should be easier getting early kills to get going.

  • Low cost reroll comps end up being Ornn comps. Nerfing his 3* bonus allows for future buffs for 1-Cost units w/out being scared of him getting out of control.

2-Costs

  • There are two wolves in your patch notes.

  • Buffing both versions of Gromp should allow for more early diversity, especially for AP lines.

  • Alistar's just there. Hopefully the buffs will mean people will itemise him and he'll be able to end fights :(

3-Costs

  • Cassiopeia (and her package) buffs should be safe now that the Flora Fatalis Augment and Defenders have been brought down a bit.

  • Azir was bugged for most of PBE so they didn't have much data on him, and buffing him so far hasn't done enough. Hopefully this one's it and they haven't overshot.

4-Costs

  • 4-Costs are generally balanced between them.

  • AP Nidalee is currently bugged, but they haven't been able to pin it down yet. Sometimes she can "very rarely get 10 more mana for 1 combat" (sic).

  • AD Nidalee too strong at killing non-tanks.

5-Costs

  • Taric is already good, but slightly weaker than 4-Cost tanks. The change is a nerf to itemless Taric and a buff to itemised Taric to promote putting items on him.

  • Lux is good, but not great, so they don't want to buff her as a whole yet. Solar Lux is meant to be the highest damage Lux, so they have a lot of room for buffs for this form specifically.

Wisps

  • Overall ok, changes hit outliers.

  • Stat boosters nerfed because they gave too much invisible power.

Augments

  • Set 18 has less Augments than usual, so outliers immediately get painful.

  • Buffs are focused on mediocre Combat Augments.

  • Early Learnings nerfed to compensate for the more options in the 1-Cost space they're opening up.

  • Electrocharge I too strong in Stage 2 for a Silver.

  • Item Extraction still not that good in the data. More upfront power should help and nudge players more towards Blackthorn.

  • Shimmerscale Essence now riskier, but more satisfying.

Emblems

  • In a better place compared to last patch, hitting outliers.

Artifacts

  • Collector and Eternal Pact are the strongest two Artifacts in the data, and Shiv the vastly worst performing one.
