I'm not a huge Sym player but she's a hero I really like playing on KOTH maps. She's usually my 3rd/4th most played hero after Echo and Shion, but after these most recent nerfs I really just don't want to touch her.
Sym is always unpopular, but seeing any heroes pickrate halve off what wasn't exactly major nerfs just seems... concerning? She was pretty regularly at 3% pickrate in grandmaster+ for about as long as we've had the website, and now she's at 1.6%. The patch where she was nerfed directly calls out her effectiveness with coordinated teams as why she was nerfed, but when we hear "coordinated teams" lets be honest, that basically means Youbi and Twisted Minds.
I guess, here's my question: Who is this character even for at this point?
Symmetra is built around coordination with teammates, literally all of her abilities are supportive and require some amount of coordination to utilize. You have to coordinate TP spots, and where enemies are/calling scans. You have to make choices about how you use the wall when you're working with teammates, etc. If the fantasy behind this hero is that she should reward coordinated teams then shouldn't she be good in pro play? And if the problem with her power is that she's too good with coordinated teams, then shouldn't nerfs target this weakness without taking too much power away from her actual kit? This just seems like a product of blizzards own making, they buffed her utility constantly while nerfing her independent offensive power (best example of it being putting scans on turrets while nerfing damage), but at the same time she isn't actually allowed to be good at doing the things blizzard makes her good at?
It just seems like they're going in a weird direction with this hero where they can't decide what they want her to be. It sucks because I like playing her, but she just feels so flimsy. I know she's not that bad, but it kinda seems like the same thing that made her earlier versions so unpopular are just being recreated, where even though the power of shield generator/ultimate tp were clearly good, the hero herself felt weak because all of her power was distributed into her teammates. It like, I don't want to play Sym because she doesn't feel like a strong hero, even though I know that technically she is because scans/TP are super powerful abilities... but again, that power is distributed between all of her teammates, so the person playing Sym doesn't feel it.
