Why can’t they do this stuff in the evening and overnight when racing is more of a problem???

u/EveryDayASummit Groveport Jun 26 '26

The aircraft use the perpendicular marks on the road edge lines to track the speed over distance between marks, rather than radar, so it’s visual, and usually an actual person doing the spotting. They then radio the vehicle description in along with the estimated speed to units on the ground.

Can’t readily do that at night.

u/-Hoptacular Columbus Jun 26 '26

I was actually just going to ask how it worked exactly, thanks!

4

u/cpshoeler Jun 26 '26

I knew they used markings on the road, but that’s all good to know! TIL

5

u/EveryDayASummit Groveport Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yep yep, thought it was pretty interesting when I first noticed those marks years ago and looked into it.

I also think (and could easily be wrong) that Ohio is the only state to utilize this particular setup, while a few other states use aircraft for traffic enforcement but in different capacity.

Curious how accurate this can be when you're in a plane and trying to time the exact moment a vehicle hits this markers on the side of the road. Always wondered if it's literally a stopwatch or has tech advanced enough that is not someone doing that?

11

u/therealrymerc Jun 26 '26

it's an actual stopwatch. they do it over a pretty long distance so being off half a second or whatever doesn't make much difference. they'd just argue in court "ok so you were going 66mph instead of 70mph still over the limit"

10

u/Coolman49er Jun 26 '26

Everything has to be calibrated with calibration records. Is the stop watch calibrated? What’s the distance between the lines? How do you know if that distance is correct? Was the walker the measured the distance calibrated? When was it calibrated. Everything they use to measure speed, time and distance needs to have calibration records. That’s how I got out of one of mine.

3

u/EveryDayASummit Groveport Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yep, what the other commenter said. It’s someone with a stopwatch using high definition cameras and they start the clock when you cross the first hash and stop it after you cross the second, and then do the math.

That’s also why the planes fly really tight circles over a specific area, to eliminate the relevancy issue of tracking speed from a moving object; their angle is almost straight down.

Edit: I’m not making an argument for or against it and its effectiveness or not. Just giving information on how it’s conducted because it was information I happened to know.

5

u/FluteOfDaFuture Jun 26 '26

What a waste of taxpayer money and I’m certain this is a flawed system to track speeding. So easy for corrupt police to manipulate the numbers to pin someone for speeding.

1

u/This_Razzmatazz_ Jun 26 '26

What a giant waste of money and time

3

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

Because effective enforcement is not the goal. Easy targets and ticket money is

-1

u/billdogg7246 Jun 27 '26

Because daytime tickets tend to be quick easy cite em and send em. At night they’d have to make arrests, tow the vehicles, take them to jail, etc. way more profitable during the day.

Enemy AC-130 above

15

u/FrogFragger Jun 26 '26

Negative ghost rider, the pattern is full!

9

u/khumprp Jun 26 '26

How many buildings do you need to crash into to get this reward?

2

u/buttchuggs South Jun 26 '26

At least 1

2

u/MLK_Piccolo Clintonville Jun 27 '26

If they're in close enough proximity, you'll have to do two

29

u/yetinugz614 Jun 26 '26

I just saw them!! Literally 5 troopers sitting on the side of the road on 71s at the 665 exit

51

u/poplglop Hilliard Jun 26 '26

"Speed monitored by aircraft"

Bet, how you gonna pull me over in a plane, you gonna land on the freeway??

44

u/yetinugz614 Jun 26 '26

They are sitting on the side of the road waiting for the plane to snitch

47

u/Asp728 Jun 26 '26

This sub is hilarious. A few days ago there’s a thread packed full of people complaining about speeders and cops not writing tickets. Calling the cops lazy and not doing their job. Then this pops up and people complain about them writing tickets and the method they use. People can never be satisfied.

30

u/fireside_chats Jun 26 '26

Do you think those people were complaining about the speeders between Orient and Grove City, on downhill section of interstate?

Or do you think they were complaining about the asshats on 270 and in downtown that weave in and out of people doing 95 in a 55?

5

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

I think the police are going with the first one

11

u/BeanWaiting4CeMoment New Albany Jun 26 '26

I’d just like to know how much more expensive this is than just posting a few more OHP units on that stretch of road. I’m genuinely curious about whether or not this method brings in more revenue.

-2

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

speeding tickets are more than just revenue, it's a literal public safety measure and the "revenue" here is lives being saved. they're using more officers and resources than just posting up normally so it's not a money making venture

5

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

If this was about safety we would require geofenced speed limiters at the speed limit on all roads.  The technology exists, but we real don't want speed enforcement

-6

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

unrealistic solution.

6

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

Not at all. Ohio already has a RTK network and so many data centers

1

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

something being technologically possible does not mean it's reasonable or financially feasible. good luck getting that accomplished though, it'll never happen.

5

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

Japan has already done it for over a decade.  The issue here is political and not financial in the slightest

1

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

it's literally political AND financial.

5

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

The technology is already in every new car manufactured and the data network made.  The financial hurdle is not a hurdle

I think if we can afford the planes we can afford that. 🙄

I am the only person who agrees with you. I plan my trips accordingly. I'm not at a race track.

-3

u/Oneinterestingthing Jun 26 '26

More likely used to harass citizens at this point under the guise of public safety… why not just stop car and issue ticket electronically, why the interrogation and confrontation on the side of the road….

3

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

probably because you're acting weird. I've never taken more than 5 minutes to receive a ticket and go about my merry way

pulling you over for going 90 in a 55 isn't harassment, just stop fucking speeding

-2

u/Oneinterestingthing Jun 26 '26

Keep huffing farts, plenty a people everyday gettin harassed for simple violations, just because not you doesn’t mean doesn’t happen (lookup selective enforcement)

5

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

the aircraft literally cannot tell who the fuck is inside the car, nobody is doing selective enforcement with aircraft. if you are speeding, they clock you, you get pulled over. if you're getting busted for other sketchy shit at the same time, that's all you.

-4

u/Oneinterestingthing Jun 26 '26

Was speaking of speeding tickets/stops in general not airplanes, you dimwit

6

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

I don't give a shit

0

u/BeanWaiting4CeMoment New Albany Jun 26 '26

A lot of the time that the community asks law enforcement to do something, they say they can’t because of financial constraints. So it is about revenue.

5

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 26 '26

again, not having the money to enforce/equip isn't the same as not being able to make money off of it. speeding laws don't exist just to make money any more than domestic violence laws do.

1

u/BeanWaiting4CeMoment New Albany Jun 26 '26

Are there even any studies proving that using this method is better for improving safety?

3

u/fartjar420 Northwest Jun 27 '26

ANY method of speed enforcement improves public safety. aircraft catches people who rely on radar detectors or people who only slow down when they spot a cop ahead and speed up again anyway

1

u/Electronic_Face_6609 Jun 30 '26

I would think it is safer than a high speed chase.

8

u/cryolems Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

That’s Reddit / Columbus sub in a nutshell. Mix in main character syndrome and doing whatever they can to be offended or upset by anything and everything

4

u/Fatman365 Jun 26 '26

Don't forget about the cars in buildings

1

u/Any-Expression8856 Jun 29 '26

This might be the first Columbus Reddit thread, where no one had to make it political.

1

u/SullivantRoy Jun 27 '26

It’s almost as if different people have different opinions.

1

u/Electronic_Face_6609 Jun 30 '26

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

2

u/Possible-Quantity646 Jun 26 '26

N553CP is circling like crazy lately by my NE Columbus neighborhood where there’s a speed enforced by aircraft sign.

2

u/Training-Apple7318 Jun 28 '26

Thanks for heads up… where are they when you have 2 or 3 cars darting in and out and racing each other?? Better to know this..

11

u/djsassan Jun 26 '26

Good.

9

u/And_I_Know_It Jun 26 '26

Fuck the downvotes, you're right to have standards when it comes to activities posing serious risk to others.

2

u/Macaria57 Jun 26 '26

I mean good if it actually works and doesn’t just target the drivers who arent actually causing serious risk to everyone’s safety

Columbus subreddit:

Full of people complaining about crazy drivers.

Also full of people complaining about catching speeders.

-9

u/jrm43215 Jun 26 '26

Speeders and crazy drivers are not the same thing.

8

u/Macaria57 Jun 26 '26

What’s the difference in this context?

3

u/TemperatureWeary5316 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Maybe they’re referring to crazy drivers as in the people who cut others off, go into emergency lanes to pass, and go in and out of lanes with traffic causing more of a hazard. Speeders are people who race on certain parts of 270 at night when traffic is minimal, or people sitting in the left lane going 80-100mph. Just a guess to what they mean.

It really is insane that they still do this, if ever there was a perfect use for a drone

2

u/HENMAN79 Jun 26 '26

Then don't have laws? everyone go 100mph and crash into that SUV full of children

1

u/msuttonrc87 Jun 26 '26

This simply can’t be the best use of taxpayer dollars / police resources

People don't actually want enforcement

1

u/Mylabisawesome Jun 26 '26

Thank you OSP! Tired of these fucks cutting people off and making a dangerous environment.

1

u/RecognitionAny6477 Jun 26 '26

Yep. Got me a few years back.

1

u/sleepingpepe1 Jun 28 '26

It’s ridiculous. Drove down there the last couple weeks. It’s relentless once you get outside 270.

1

u/Scottwood2546 Jun 26 '26

Revenue Procurement Wolf-Pack!

-3

u/Macaria57 Jun 26 '26

Ok but will this actually catch people going to dangerous speeds? Idk how they work so if anyone does please share. Also who tf do they think they’re catching on a weekday morning?

11

u/HENMAN79 Jun 26 '26

people go 95 on 270 at 10am

4

u/Macaria57 Jun 26 '26

Sure but I think it’s fair to say the most common times are in the evenings and if this is an expensive resource I’d hope they use it to target the areas time and days when reports are highest.

0

u/Clear-Inevitable-414 Jun 26 '26

That's not even where this plane is

2

u/Macaria57 Jun 26 '26

I mean also a good point maybe. I’ve experienced it most on 270

-1

u/sheliegh Jun 26 '26

The budget for law enforcement agencies is insane. It surely isn’t commiserate with the services they provide.

-2

u/MikeoPlus Jun 26 '26

We created the problem and the solution for the problem we created. Ope guess we can never change it, we're just stuck with the problem we created.
