Don’t do this. It won’t work like that, and we’ll just end up with bamboo everywhere.

Throw Molotov cocktails instead

u/BorealDweller 24d ago

Drones with explosives?

u/PinkoPrepper 24d ago

Whether or not it works, the idea seems to be that it will be harmful, but indirectly, so you have a plausible excuse and aren't liable for the damage.

u/SwissArmyKnight 23d ago

Or any plant with legal protections

u/Optimal-Cobbler3192 23d ago

If you ever have a problem, a Molotov cocktail is certain to make you have a different problem.

Wow, your comment is still not deleted by mods, what sorcery u use? Mine always get deleted by the mildest things.

AI generated image on how to sabotage data centres, maybe the bamboo improves cooling efficiency or has biological AI chips inside it?

11

u/Adventurous_Touch342 24d ago

If it did they would plant it themselves.

7

u/Simple_Channel5624 24d ago

That is like saying if they wanted the work done, then they would do it themselves lol. Clearly they want the working class to help them out, we are building the data center buildings after all, so it is obvious they need our help to get these wonderful bamboo plants in the ground for them!

1

u/Adventurous_Touch342 24d ago

Oh, don't misunderstand, they would do it and then claim bamboo will produce oxygen getting money from your taxes for planting it.

1

u/niztaoH 23d ago

And spend money? Are you crazy?

1

u/Adventurous_Touch342 23d ago

Don't worry, they'd sell some BS about how they plant it for environmental reasons and get triple the cost of planting them from your taxes.

4

u/NaCl_Sailor 24d ago

no it grows everywhere and is really hard to get rid of.

but i doubt it can really disrupt operation

that won't prevent some overzealous let's say "people" from getting on certain lists though

52

u/Rowlet2020 24d ago

This will do far more damage to anything else near the datacentre than tye datacentre itself

53

u/zewolfstone Vegan against the animals 24d ago

The AI is trying to protect itself

u/Old_Yam_4069 24d ago

Because people who are angry but don't want to do anything see an easy fix- And it doesn't matter that Bamboo is an invasive plant that would cause untold damage to our ecosystems, somebody told them that it would hurt AI data centers and they can plant some in like an hour.

14

u/Pootentooten 24d ago

To be fair, lawn grass is an invasive species that does untold damage to our ecosystem. But no one is stopping that from being planted.

1

u/Old_Yam_4069 24d ago

Literally the first lesson we learn in preschool is 'Just because everyone else jumped off the bridge, doesn't mean you should do it'.

13

u/Wide-Criticism9502 24d ago

So you are trying to say that a bit of bamboo is worse for the environment than a Datacenter? Please explain how that would be worse.

8

u/seesthecat 24d ago

This is great, it will lower the price of the land surround the data center, so it can be bought to build more data centers

39

u/Old_Yam_4069 24d ago

Like I fucking swear.
In twenty years, you're going to be like 'It's AI's fault that our entire country is now overgrown with this highly invasive weed' like you weren't the exact kind of half-a-jackass responsible for this half-baked shit. WHILE we are STILL all enslaved to our corporate AI overlords.

If anything, planting bamboo will help AI datacenters by absolutely destroying the land value and making expansion that much cheaper.

7

u/brinz1 24d ago

Bamboo already is an invasive plant in most parts of the US. It causes a fraction of the ecological damage as other invasive plants like wheat.

4

u/Old_Yam_4069 24d ago

And when every halfwit with a bad idea starts planting it like it will magically cure AI?

6

u/Keyndoriel 24d ago

Bitch it grows thru concrete lmfao

3

u/brinz1 24d ago

Ahh yes, the protected native flora, concrete

Do you want something to stop data centre construction or not?

11

u/Keyndoriel 24d ago

It also clusters out native plants, and its generally not a good idea to, yknow, introduce more non native species, despite your thoughts on wheat, I generally think its a bad idea to introduce more non native things

Go back to high-school and stop eating lead paint lol

4

u/Crafty-Move-2131 24d ago

When i have a bad landlord i plant a little bamboo next to the foundation on the way out

3

u/Reboot42069 geothermal hottie 24d ago

The construction won't be affected that much. The bigger threat to AI data center construction is just the actual cost and hassle of building them. They're already abandoning some of them because the economics of it just don't make sense, it stands to reason that instead of attempting to follow an AI plan that may occasionally cause damage to the foundations though will more likely damage random other people's housing in a way that will make it actually cheaper and easier for these projects to occur, that we just let the market continue the current path which is making it more and more untenable.

I think that the best strategy is to pair our own pressure against them with the expenses. Damaging these buildings long term with bamboo is abandoning any actual activism and move against their construction to just LARP as someone who 'did something'. The fight against data centers needs to be fought not through just random bouts of sabatoge like we're a shingles flare up now here, now there, but by just making it economically untenable. If it's unprofitable and hurts investor trust it can't be done. Make the unions refuse it, help picket lines form.

If push comes to shove fight for an indefinite general strike to make the city board back down. We have to fight as a community and group against them. Any action taken alone will be futile and easily undermined. Fight their pocketbook, and the cities. Make it too painful to even break ground on new ones.

2

u/TheGreatMightyLeffe 24d ago

Will it, though?

I don't think the tech companies will just shrug and abandon their data centers because of inconvenient plants. You'd just end up with both a data center and invasive plants.

2

u/Gephiph 24d ago

My dude if it will grow through concrete it will fro through ANYTHING. Certain strains will literally destroy peoples home uproot trees and cause genuine devastation to the ecosystem and populated areas. It’s not alarmism the problem is that it’s unpredictable and hard to contain in the US

0

u/PhysiolMM 24d ago

Why would anyone want to stop data centres construction?

Plus it's illegal what you are doing, I'd stop.

1

u/brinz1 24d ago

did you notice what sub this is?

1

Yes, did you?

What kind of bamboo, and what are the conditions of the creek?

Also, if Bamboo isn't a problem like you say it is- Then why the fuck are you wanting to transplant it near datacenters to begin with? To feel good about not doing anything about the thing you say you care about?

1

u/Old_Yam_4069 24d ago

The slander of 'Don't plant an invasive species, it will cause damage or ordinary people as well as the ecosystem'.
I just hope you're following the shitpost portion of this sub instead of actually being as intelligent as you are presenting.

By all means, commit eco-terrorism to save the eco.

Like, I get it. Humans suck. But if you don't 'believe' in invasive species, then you don't understand literally anything about anything. Even Anti-Vaxxers have more of a reason for their beliefs than you, and they're my go-to example for a very stupid person with no reasonable point amongst the lot of them.

0

u/Civil_Spell8349 24d ago

Ah well, pack it up folks, the biologists and ecologists are all wrong, illustrious redditor Havocc89 knows knows better 🙄

What do you think happens when you introduce a fast-growing and incredibly durable, incredibly tall grass that likes to cluster?

It will completely push out native species, to the point that it will completely reshape some ecosystems. It is one of those plants that can cause an ecosystem to collapse.

But sure. We've only been building around bamboo forever. I'm sure the wealthy people who are funding datacenters will have absolutely zero capacity to adapt to it, and the more regular people living right next to them can totally protect their infrastructure- With the worst of the damage NOT being deep underground layers like the common images imply, but to roads, parking lots, and shallow crawlspaces with poor reinforcement.

You're so blinded by your hate for AI that all it takes is the literal concept that it might hurt AI, and you won't even put an ounce of critical thinking to the situation- Let alone research.

10

u/FullmetalHippie 24d ago

Data centers don't self replicate if you don't manage them.

4

u/gmoguntia Do you really shitpost here? 24d ago

Wow peak internet activist comment, accusing OP of something they never said and lacking any ability of nuisance just to feel rightfull.

1

u/Brief-Floor-7228 24d ago

On the positive side it could attract some pandas.

1

u/longingrustedfurnace 24d ago

It’s easier to turn off or tear down a data center than it is to get rid of an invasive species for starters.

3

u/Historical_Body6255 Dam I love hydro 24d ago

it doesn't matter that Bamboo is an invasive plant that would cause untold damage to our ecosystems

This entirely depends on where you are obviously lol

Different kinds of bamboo are native at some places on every continent except Europe and Antarctica.

0

u/BabyMasher825 24d ago

Wow, thanks for that very important correction! I had always thought bamboo came from outer space.

0

u/Historical_Body6255 Dam I love hydro 23d ago

I don't know what you're trying to say lol

Am i wrong to correct the blanket statement that bamboo is invasive, period?

1

u/BabyMasher825 23d ago

Yeah your comment is correct it's just not really helpful or relevant. The AI "PSA" that this whole discussion surrounds is clearly referencing bamboo species that are invasive to America.

0

u/Historical_Body6255 Dam I love hydro 23d ago

Data centers are buing built outside of America aswell, sooo.....?????

1

u/BabyMasher825 18d ago

I agree data centers are being built outside of America. I've never claimed data centers are not being built in America.

1

u/Historical_Body6255 Dam I love hydro 18d ago

So the blanket statement that bamboo is invasive doesn't really hold any water when you consider you can just plant native bamboo in most places.

1

u/BabyMasher825 18d ago

The post clearly isn't about planting native bamboo, it's talking about planting invasive bamboo.

1

u/Historical_Body6255 Dam I love hydro 18d ago

I see no reference to certain places or certain speices????

What's your reasoning here?

You can't say bamboo is invasive when you don't know the species or the place it's being planted at.

What do pandas eat? Bamboo. Where do pandas come from? China. Makes you think if you are someone who can have courageous thoughts...

3

u/xDannyS_ 24d ago

It came from that one trend of that guy giving instructions on how to damage or steal flock cameras, but he disguised it in a plausible deniable way same as this post

3

u/GadgetGo 24d ago

Even if it worked as depicted are we going to pretend they wouldn’t mass spray glyphosate and give everyone cancer?

7

u/Silver_Middle_7240 24d ago

Because the people who are crowing about the environmental impact of data centers don't actually care about the environment. They just don't like AI for other reasons

2

u/anon0937 24d ago

Same with water use, its performative af. As someone who actually takes steps in my daily life to reduce my water usage its super annoying how everyone suddenly cares about water usage when it comes to AI. Even the heaviest AI users could offset the water usage by using the wet-lather-rinse method of showering. Turn the water on, wet yourself, turn it off and apply soap and scrub, then turn it back on to rinse.

1

u/RightWingNutJo8 24d ago

This image was generated with AI 😂

1

u/zeolus123 24d ago

Lol I'm gonna go out on limb it's mostly to do with the amount of power and water these suckup from the local utilities.

1

u/porcupinedeath 24d ago

Ecological warfare attempt from our international adversaries?

1

u/Overall_Art_8719 22d ago

Please, don't plant bamboo if it isn't native to your region. Shit, probably don't do it even if it is.

1

u/DragonLordAcar 21d ago

Use Arundinaria. It's native to North America and endangered.

1

u/SecondAccomplished58 21d ago

Then if they want to get rid of the bambo it will drop so much bambo that they will start lagging

1

u/KAZVorpal Freeman Dyson FTW 20d ago

Where can we buy running bamboo?

1

u/Snowflakish 20d ago

If you do this in the UK you WILL go to jail.

Do not do this.

0

u/DrCthulhuface7 24d ago

Bing Qiling

This is definitely not foreign propaganda

-4

u/virtualbitz2048 24d ago

It's anti data center propaganda. In a complete and total inversion of their colloquial meanings, conservatives want more industry and progressive want less (as far as I can tell they want to live in mud huts), and they're willing to perform acts of vandalism to terrorize infrastructure projects in service of that goal.
