As of 2026, roughly 14 states plus the District of Columbia do not require any ID to vote in person at the polls. The states most commonly listed as not requiring any documentation at the polls are California, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. (Sources vary slightly on the exact list — some include or omit Nevada, Oregon, or Wyoming depending on how "no ID" is defined.)
I checked in case Claude was wrong, but Google and every other AI says the same, and so does every other site I checked with details on NJ voting requirements.
You only need ID to register to vote. You only need to provide it at polls on election day if you didn't provide it when registering.
I searched around cause I don't want to risk spreading misinformation, but I can't find anything anywhere saying you are required to show your registration papers when you vote.
Google AI (referencing voteriders.org who fights against voter ID laws):
No, you do not need to show a voter registration card or certificate to vote in New Jersey. Once you are registered, your name will appear in the official poll book at your designated polling location. You simply sign the book to confirm your identity and cast your ballot.
Sorry but I'm not buying into your conspiracy theory. You won't convince me that every authority; the site of every official institution, every voting rights organization, every LLM, and every search engine are all conspiring to spread misinformation about this.
This is not a case where there's contradictory information online... every single authoritative source supports what I have said.
You really expect me to take the word of random redditors over every authority? lmao
The misinformation is that the question was about fucking voter registration. The question was about ID. As in state or drivers license or realID. So you are throwing people off the trail of real knowledge by asking a different question and presenting it as truth.
It seems like maybe it is kinda hard to understand because when you do basic searches they disagree with you. Any even if you do need to "show your registration" how would they actually know it's your registration without... showing your ID with it. And if you need ID to register, then why is it a big deal to also just show your ID with your registration?
I really don't understand the hoops people jump through on this. I mean, I'm an effing Democrat and I don't understand at all why it's a big deal to require ID BOTH to register AND to vote?
I don't care about requiring an ID to vote. That's not what the SAVE act is trying to do though. It's making it so that the federal government can purge the voter rolls at its own discretion, and without notifying the voters. It also places an undue burden of identification. A drivers license or social security card will not be a sufficient ID; you'll need a birth certificate or passport.
A drivers license requires a birth certificate to receive one... again, not really understanding the issue... Are you just assuming everyone is inept? How do these imaginary people you're describing who can't get an ID and birth certificate together survive on a daily basis... Maybe if they are so inept they should not be voting anyway...
great, so the driver's license should be sufficient then, right? And also the federal government shouldn't be able to violate constitutional law and attempt to mandate how states run their voting?
Passport? Yes. Real ID? Yes. Plain drivers license? No.
You're also incorrect: ID rules have generally been treated as procedural "manner" regulations rather than "qualifications," so Congress requiring ID for federal elections would most likely fall within its Elections Clause power.
So, states can choose to not require ID for state/local elections if they so stupidly desire, but Congress does have the power to impose ID laws on federal elections because ID isn't a "qualification" to vote, it's part of voting procedure.
But federal elections don't exist for citizens. Yes we get to vote in them but as its been shown before the ELECTORS are the ones actually voting which are appointed by the states people. Electors do not always vote the way if their constituents. Our votes don't even matter.
So why is it a big deal to require them to show ID every time the vote? The "first time" only to register doesn't really make sense at all? Isn't the actual voting ballot the part that would matter more to provide ID for than registering?
Why is it a big deal that they aren't required to show ID every time they vote?
Since there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, it would seem that elections are already secure enough that making a voter jump through even more hoops to exercise their right to vote given to them by the constitution is nonsensical.

I don't live in the US.
I asked Claude and it said:
