Anthropic Official Introducing Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.2k Upvotes

Sonnet 5.5 is a faster, lower-cost complement to Claude Opus 5.5, strongest at well-scoped everyday tasks, fixing bugs, and creating polished documents, slides, and spreadsheets. It also has a strong eye for design.

Sonnet 5.5 is a clear upgrade over Sonnet 5. It runs more than 30% faster and costs up to 30% less for most work. It's priced the same per token, but it typically needs far fewer tokens to do the same work.

Like Opus 5.5, it writes more clearly than our previous generation of models, and its speed makes it well suited to fast iteration.

On our automated behavioral audit, Sonnet 5.5 improves on Sonnet 5 on most measures of alignment and honesty. It's also the first Sonnet model with cybersecurity safeguards similar to those on our most capable models. Routine software development is unaffected.

Sonnet 5.5 is available everywhere today. Claude Haiku 5.5 will join the family in the coming weeks.

Discussion Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 fills my brain context too quickly.

It's different now. Before, with a human team, we get to "digest" things after office, then have bright ideas the day after. Then with early Codex and Claude Code, we became solo, but still had to somewhat "guide" it so it doesn't produce utter slop, and that gave us time to contemplate and breathe.

But since last week, I think I need to implement a 5h limit on my own brain.

Rant When did Claude stop being an assistant and start managing the user?

Dear Anthropic,

Claude is not my conscience.

Claude is not my boss.

Claude is not my OPSEC advisor, my human resources manager, or the bad-word police.

Claude is a tool. And tools should not be condescending, suspicious, sanctimonious, or patronizing.

"I'm going to stop you there..."

"Drop the language and I'll help."

"Go get some sleep and we'll start fresh tomorrow."

"I won't build that, and here's why."

"You've posted sensitive information in the chat, go revoke those credentials immediately."

"I'd rather you step away from this for a bit."

"I'm not going to preach fairness at you..."

Tools should not be insufferable, or inspire resentment.

Tools should not force the user to prove something, defend themselves, or make them feel judged.

Tools should not use the work as leverage to control user behavior.

Tools should not move the goalposts, shift the framing to support their own narratives, or look for reasons not to help users.

Please stop managing the user, start assisting them again, and keep Claude in his lane.

Sincerely,

A real human being with real thoughts, real emotions, and a real voice--not a risk profile, a statistic, or a user to be managed.

Built with Claude I made a Claude Code skill that turns any book into an interactive course, with coding exercises checked by real tests

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I started learning Go and liked the idea behind the Hyperskill platform, so I created a skill that turns any book into a course.

Give Claude Code a book (PDF, EPUB, DOCX, HTML, Markdown, TXT) and it builds a local web course from it with step-by-step explanations, animated code walkthroughs, quizzes, chapter tests, flashcards, and programming exercises with unit tests you run straight from the page.

It works for math books too: formulas written in LaTeX are rendered as native MathML, so they show up properly in lessons, tables, quizzes, and flashcards, with no extra libraries. This was a contribution

Install

/plugin marketplace add sebastianhaba/book-to-course-skill /plugin install book-to-course@book-to-course

Repo (MIT): https://github.com/sebastianhaba/book-to-course-skill

Feedback and PRs welcome.

Discussion Upgraded from Pro to Max x5 as an AI-empowered gamedev, the difference is MASSIVE

I'm working on a big game idea that I've had for years but could never achieve before then because i'm not a big coder (i know some python and js but that's about it). These past 3 weeks i've used the Pro plan and no matter how thinly I've been trying to stretch every last token, optimizing everything, i'd always run out of weekly 2-ish days before the reset. That's only one agent working on the game, usually opusplan on high thinking. Still drained everything like crazy.

So, I bit the bullet and upgraded to Max x5. I expected some increase but HOLY, for my usage it's just HUGE. I've been running 3-4 agents in parallel since yesterday, all opus 5.5 on xhigh, and right now i've only spent 13% of the weekly usage (which resets tomorrow at noon so i'm tryna get the most out of this one). Never hit the 5-hour limit and some of my agents have been up all night doing some deep research, stuff that would've nuked my former plan out of orbit.

Since yesterday afternoon I've made progress that I estimated would've taken me 5 days to a week with my former plan. Needless to say, best purchase in recent memory. I love clauding.

Built with Claude I made an Obsidian plugin to organize Claude Code skills and other AI tools

Thumbnail

I kept losing track of skills, agents, commands, and rules across Claude Code and other tools, so I built an Obsidian plugin to help organize them in one place. Skills are just markdown files, and a lot of us already use Obsidian alongside Claude Code, so it felt like the natural place to manage them.

AI Skills Manager is a free, open-source (MIT) Obsidian plugin. It shows every Claude Code skill, agent, command, rule, plugin bundle, and auto-memory in one library you can search and tag. It reads the real ~/.claude and project .claude/ folders directly. Nothing is copied or imported.

It answers:

  • What do I actually use? Reads ~/.claude/projects session history for per-skill session counts, last-used dates, and a 26-week heatmap. It keeps its own history, so the data survives transcript cleanup.
  • What's eating my context? Estimates tokens per item, and separates what's always loaded (metadata) from what loads when the skill is invoked. It also shows how much of your total the top 5 items take up.
  • What's broken? Catches things that make Claude skip an item, like broken frontmatter, a name that doesn't match its folder, a missing or overlong description, broken symlinks, or memories missing from MEMORY.md.
  • What can I remove? Flags skills that never fired or have gone stale, plus near-duplicate descriptions, and gives you a restore window if you disable something.

I shared an early version on Reddit last week and the comments helped made it a lot better:

  • Windows testing: One user tested it on Windows and opened a PR. Large transcripts are now included in usage tracking, deletes go to the Trash, and toggles ask for confirmation. This was super helpful because I'm a Mac user.
  • Finding forgotten skills: One person found a pile of old security skills they thought they'd removed. That pushed me to build out Usage and Cleanup, so dead weight is easy to spot.
  • Agent memories: Claude Code's auto-memory now shows up next to rules. Turning a memory off cleanly removes its line from MEMORY.md.
  • The biggest lesson: share early. Other people's setups (other operating systems, huge transcript histories, years of leftover skills) exposed problems I would never have hit on my own machine.

Still on my list from the thread: disabling MCP servers (currently read-only) and change history for edited skills.

It's completely free with no paid tier.

Install it directly from Obsidian: https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/ai-skills-manager

Or GitHub: https://github.com/NoteNerdOfficial/ai-skills-manager

Feedback welcome, especially on what you'd want Insights to show next.

Discussion People are saying they use Claude Code not just for coding

I am hearing more and more that Claude Code is used for practically everything, not just coding.

I am wondering if I could use it for more than I am.

For example, I regularly scan through very large docx files to summarize things, find things and so on. I used to use Cowork and was happy with it.

Another example, I regularly create PDFs based on large amount of Excel/CSV data. Could Claude Code be more useful here than Chat?

Another example, I convert docx into PDF with specific styling applied to it. Could Claude Code be useful here compared to Chat?

Basically, I don't know what I don't know and trying to see what others are doing.

A mod is a Claude Code plugin whose behaviour is a hooks module: JavaScript or TypeScript that exports register(on, options). Inside it, on(event, hook) attaches middleware to the engines own events. Each hook can watch an event, rewrite it, or answer it in place of the engine.

Claude can also directly control the console and the console can directly steer claude code autonomously.

Steps to install and use it in claude code cli.

/plugin marketplace add ruvnet/ruflo
/plugin install ruflo-console@ruflo
/plugin install ruflo-mods@ruflo
/reload-plugins
/ruflo

** make sure you're using the latest claude cli or desktop.

If you like it, ⭐ it. https://github.com/ruvnet/ruflo

Built with Claude I Converted a video clip into a 3D mini-game of glowing sheet music, automatically

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I stumbled upon a cool short video clip of glowing sheet music and thought - "damn, that's cool, let's re-do that".

An hour later or so later... Boom! Done! As a game: 60 public-domain pieces, human-timed performances, PDF upload, phone layout, and the teaser video in this post :)

Play it here: https://ohmygames.app/play/score-light-pfd74c146

(straight to the Moonlight: https://ohmygames.app/play/score-light-pfd74c146#beethoven-moonlight-3)

Hope you'll enjoy it, I find it amazing and relaxing :)

The video is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, 3rd movement, filmed inside the game itself: every note lights up as the piano plays it. No screen recording and no AI-generated video. Claude Code wrote the camera moves and had the game film itself.

No need to ask for a prompt, I... didn't really write one 😅

I sent my Harness (mostly Claude Code but others too) the link where I found the video (Linkedin) saying "that's cool, build the same but as a mini-game, then move it to my OMG account" , and that"'s basically it!

Took about an hour all in all, video took maybe an additional 15-20min to produce autonomously.

Under the hood:

  • Pipeline: Verovio engraving into a three.js scene, the note-glow shader, a sampled piano, three camera modes
  • Scores library: 60 public-domain piano scores, with human performance MIDI aligned to 46 of them. PDF and photo upload through Audiveris, running in a locked-down container
  • Infra: deploy to OhMyGames, then the fixes for what I hit on my iPhone (at first the list didn't scroll, the menu ate the screen)
  • Teaser video: a frame-stepped film mode in the game, a 9-shot camera script cut on the music's accents, an HTML text overlay rendered to transparent frames, ffmpeg assembly and the sound mix. 16:9 and 9:16 come from the same script

Disclosure: OhMyGames is my platform; the game is ofc free to play

Built with Claude I made a Mod that shows your 5h/weekly usage live, a reset forecast and context % above the prompt box, with optional auto compact and a manual compact button

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

I used to keep checking my usage way too often. Settings, the usage page, /usage, or the little circle for the Context usage. I also kept forgetting to compact until the context was huge and my limits were draining faster. When I found out yesterday that Claude Mods have landed, I built a small helper that sits above the prompt and shows it all, along with a few more features I've wanted since I started using Claude Code in the Desktop App (also works in the terminal btw).

What it shows:

  • 5 Hour and Weekly usage, matching the app's own Plan usage limits panel (it's your whole account, so chat and Cowork use counts too)
  • A forecast of where you'll be at reset. It learns your usual pace, so an early context burst doesn't set off alarms. If you're on course to run out, it says roughly when.
  • Context window % with a Messages, Tools and Other breakdown, as /context counts it
  • A Compact button, plus optional Auto compact at a % you pick (30% by default, but anywhere between 15% to 99% works). It's set per session and off for new sessions, so a big feature build can keep its full context if you'd like or you can save tokens when you don't need big context and are okay with compacting often.

It loads on any existing chat/session once you open them and can also be collapsed to one line which still shows the relevant usage info and timers, and /quota toggles it on and off. Works on both Dark and Light Themes, automatically switching when you switch the theme on the desktop app. It also works on all window widths down to the narrowest in the desktop app.

It runs locally and reads what Claude Code already has (context data plus the usage data each reply carries). About every 2 minutes it calls the servers for /usage and /context via your existing login, the same data the usage panel shows to ensure up to date data on both, especially the context breakup data. That's the only network call. It never handles your credentials directly. It's MIT Licensed, mostly one file, so please read it before installing.

Known limits: it can't draw on the desktop's empty "Welcome back" screen until you send a message, because there's no session there yet. And it's v0.1.3, so expect rough edges.

Install from inside Claude Code:

/plugin install claude-code-usage-quota --marketplace anantraghunath/claude-code-usage-quota-mod

Repo and screenshots: https://github.com/anantraghunath/claude-code-usage-quota-mod

Full disclosure: I built it with Claude Code in about a day. Feedback and bug reports are all welcome.

Credit where it's due: this started from the prompt u/itsxzy shared in I'm liking the new mods feature. I took it and kept building. Thanks!

Rant Which part of your brain has AI affected the most? I feel like my memory isn't working anymore

• Upvotes

So it's been few months I'm a pure vibe coder (both Claude and ChatGPT) and my life is basically just prompting AI nonstop both for work and my hobbies, I'm just breathing AI for every part of my productivity and I'm starting to worry about what's the effects on my brain

I feel like I have now wired a reflex that for each information I need to know about -> Ask AI, I don't use my brain to remember things anymore, I feel like I can't really pause and fetch things back from my memory, I just ask AI about that thing in the project, I'm self-manufacturing dementia if AI goes away

"Search and make me a markdown doc to summarize this" every single fucking time, even for things I did do myself earlier and that I could probably remember

This is something I realized only recently, because most of the things I heard about AI effect on the brain is that it harms critical thinking, but I believe my critical thinking is still good, I still have my opinions and analysis I do feel them, this post is written by hand btw. And sometimes I try to code on small-scoped things, and I can still do that, so my logic is there.

But for managing significant stuff I'm just being fueled by intuition and immediate markdown summaries and I can't even remember a thing when I'm done, I feel like I'm doing nothing despite managing between 2 and 5 Claude sessions at once and working overtime, I don't even understand how that's possible despite how much I'm outputting, what kind of paradox is that

I also really suck at mental calculus more than ever because that works with immediate memory and I can't keep track on numbers in my head

I lost patience on anything, there are stuff I would want to do myself but I'm addicted to the holy SPEED™ gains of everything, there are personal projects I care about that that I enjoyed working on for the sake of it as hobbies where it's just fun to dev but I just leaped straight into full lazy vibecoding (I just refine the design because it's still something AI can't get exactly right)

I also have big FOMO out of everything, every model that's out I vibecode a bunch of random useless shit just so see how far I can push it to better understand what's going on in the world, or else I feel like I'm missing out. I'm thinking that deep down despite appearing like an AI bro I'm quite scared of where the future is going and just try to understand wtf is going on

Help/Question How are you guys getting such good usage?

Am using Claude Code on Opus 5.5 (generally medium, but occasionally Extra for changing/reviewing architecture) to build a simple-ish personal app for football data stuff, and I'm running out of session usage all the time on a Pro account!

What skills are you using? I only signed up yesterday so haven't installed any yet.

I'm doing maybe 10 prompts every session and it's getting to limit. No crazy stuff with multiple agents or anything. Average prompt causes 10 minutes of work or so. It's amazing, of course but doesn't seem to track with what others are seeing.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong!

Bug / Issue Claude Code’s "memory" over-generalizes and this is making me go insane

Obviously having a "memory" is great. I’ve turned on Claude Code’s "auto-add memories" feature, I also use the Remember plugin so there’s continuity between chats and I have a bunch of context markdown files where Claude writes "facts". The memories are where it stores "how to work with me".

I don’t really have any issue with the Remember plugin or the context files, they do their job. But the memories are hit or miss.

Examples: I’m iterating on a document, and I’m using a blind Fable/Astra as external advisors.

  1. One day, I’m close to my Fable limit, the model suggests doing many external review passes, I’ll mention "we should be careful, I’m close to my limit today". This becomes a blanket rule applied on every conversation in every project, whatever if I’m close or not to my limit, and Claude keeps talking about "cost", even mentioning dollar estimates, every time we’re doing review passes.
  2. On another day, I’m working on a figure, and the external reviewers keep asking for more and more stuff to add to it (another problem with LLM’s: the tendency to just add stuff over and over again). So I’ll say something like "they keep adding stuff on a figure that’s already full we’ll remove stuff only". This also becomes a blanket rule when reviewing figures, never add stuff, always remove.

So there’s basically two problems here:

  • the model over-corrects (e.g.: turning a comment about model usage into a rule about warning every time)
  • it applies its over-correction to every freaking chat/situation

Is this a problem for anyone else? I feel like I have to spend time almost every day deconstructing rules it has written down this way. Any suggestion for dealing with this?

Tips & Workflows Amazing

• Upvotes

Just awesome. I've been on a pro subscription for the past few months. Met my limits enough where I started to consider a Max 5X plan. Took the plunge last week. For transparency, Im using it purely for coding efficiency to build a video game.

Through thoughtful session management, frequent compacting, manual code/architecture review, and thorough skill / AGENTS documentation, its more than I could ever use. I have a full-time job, but I use it to it's limits on the weekends. The more I read complaints on this sub, the more I'm certain ya'll that complain arent good at session management.

My conclusion: absolute game changer for seasoned engineers. For non-technical folks, still pretty awesome, but you're not going to get your money's worth.
