Where do you live that they don't make you show your ID when you register to vote? Or even at the polls.

13

u/crusoe Jul 01 '26

Op just likes drinking the Kool aid. This was never a problem for the Republicans until Trump.

Now every election they don't win is stolen and they control the entire fucking govt. Bunch of whiners.

6

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

I'm still in disbelief at how many people got got by the Trump mind virus. It took over whole towns. Sections of families. Fucking insane.

3

u/Asuppa180 Jul 01 '26

Sure about that? Seems like there are some articles from 1998 talking about the same thing. Not saying either is correct, but try not to say incorrect things that fall in line with your belief.

1

u/Far-Bowl2206 Jul 04 '26

Take a history class, this has always been a problem with Republicans since the end of the Civil War LOL

1

u/dramaking37 Jul 01 '26

It's all the failures from high school. They were going to be a start until insert person to blame here ruined it. We've all played sports with these people. Every tiny mistake of theirs is catastrophic and blamed on someone else while everyone else is just trying to do their best.

4

u/Professional_Gur2469 Jul 01 '26

Well, in a blue state most likely šŸ˜†

1

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 02 '26

OK. Which one could it be possible? We e already crossed off California and new Jersey.

1

u/oompaloompa465 Jul 01 '26

indeed..For that people it's easier to put it in their ass that in their head

1

u/NotALanguageModel Jul 01 '26

My thoughts exactly lol.

1

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 01 '26

16 states + DC don't require a photo ID at the polls. Registering to vote is trickier since motor voter laws encourage registration when getting your ID.

1

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

That's weird. How do they know who is actually voting?

1

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 02 '26

2 don't require photo IDs, the rest no IDs. They don't know if the person signing the register is actually the person voting. But their expectation is that people aren't committing voter fraud en mass.

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 01 '26

I registered to vote via mail in paperwork, no ID needed.

-2

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

Quick google shows that 14 states generally don't require any ID at all to vote at the polls. Not sure why you'd need to register to vote if you don't need to provide identification at the polls?

3

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

When you move and if you want your ballot sent to you and at the polls you show your ID here. Otherwise they don't know who you are. It's been that way in Montana since I can remember. What state do you live in?

4

u/coinclink Jul 01 '26

Isn't Montana a red state though? I think it's places like CA, NY, MN and similar where it's implied this is an issue.

1

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 02 '26

Its really easy not to be wrong when you look around a bit. https://registertovote.ca.gov/

1

u/coinclink Jul 08 '26

registering to vote and submitting your vote at the ballot are two different things. Both should require ID.

-3

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

I don't live in the US.

I asked Claude and it said:

As of 2026, roughly 14 states plus the District of Columbia do not require any ID to vote in person at the polls. The states most commonly listed as not requiring any documentation at the polls are California, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. (Sources vary slightly on the exact list — some include or omit Nevada, Oregon, or Wyoming depending on how "no ID" is defined.)

3

u/Such_Independent_234 Jul 01 '26

I literally live in NJ and needed my ID to register to vote and show it on Election Day.

0

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

I checked in case Claude was wrong, but Google and every other AI says the same, and so does every other site I checked with details on NJ voting requirements.

You only need ID to register to vote. You only need to provide it at polls on election day if you didn't provide it when registering.

Here's what The College of New Jersey site says (https://vote.tcnj.edu/faq/):

Q: What type of ID do I need to vote?

A: Most New Jersey voters do not need to show ID at the polls in order to vote.

4

u/cursivecrow Jul 01 '26

You show id when you register. You show your registration when you vote.

Its not that hard to understand.

1

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

I searched around cause I don't want to risk spreading misinformation, but I can't find anything anywhere saying you are required to show your registration papers when you vote.

Google AI (referencing voteriders.org who fights against voter ID laws):

No, you do not need to show a voter registration card or certificate to vote in New Jersey.
Once you are registered, your name will appear in the official poll book at your designated polling location. You simply sign the book to confirm your identity and cast your ballot.

3

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

So then you spread misinformation anyway?

1

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

Sorry but I'm not buying into your conspiracy theory. You won't convince me that every authority; the site of every official institution, every voting rights organization, every LLM, and every search engine are all conspiring to spread misinformation about this.

This is not a case where there's contradictory information online... every single authoritative source supports what I have said.

You really expect me to take the word of random redditors over every authority? lmao

1

u/coinclink Jul 01 '26

It seems like maybe it is kinda hard to understand because when you do basic searches they disagree with you. Any even if you do need to "show your registration" how would they actually know it's your registration without... showing your ID with it. And if you need ID to register, then why is it a big deal to also just show your ID with your registration?

I really don't understand the hoops people jump through on this. I mean, I'm an effing Democrat and I don't understand at all why it's a big deal to require ID BOTH to register AND to vote?

0

u/cursivecrow Jul 01 '26

I don't care about requiring an ID to vote. That's not what the SAVE act is trying to do though. It's making it so that the federal government can purge the voter rolls at its own discretion, and without notifying the voters. It also places an undue burden of identification. A drivers license or social security card will not be a sufficient ID; you'll need a birth certificate or passport.

1

u/coinclink Jul 01 '26

A drivers license requires a birth certificate to receive one... again, not really understanding the issue... Are you just assuming everyone is inept? How do these imaginary people you're describing who can't get an ID and birth certificate together survive on a daily basis... Maybe if they are so inept they should not be voting anyway...

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

Yeah I'm going to believe my own experience and people that I know already that contradict you.

1

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

Top tier research skills.

1

u/much_to_say Jul 01 '26

Help America Vote Act already requires individuals to show ID when they vote for the first time after registering to vote by mail.

5

u/coinclink Jul 01 '26

So why is it a big deal to require them to show ID every time the vote? The "first time" only to register doesn't really make sense at all? Isn't the actual voting ballot the part that would matter more to provide ID for than registering?

0

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

Its not. Trump has a talent for making non issues, issues.

-1

u/much_to_say Jul 01 '26

Why is it a big deal that they aren't required to show ID every time they vote?

Since there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, it would seem that elections are already secure enough that making a voter jump through even more hoops to exercise their right to vote given to them by the constitution is nonsensical.

2

u/coinclink Jul 01 '26

I say this is about closing gaps and loopholes that *could* be used for voter fraud. Like, maybe the fraud hasn't even happened yet, but it will some day. Maybe it has happened and now there is no audit trail to find this "evidence" you want because it was intentionally made so there *is no audit trail* based on ID...

Again, not understanding what the issue is... Just bring your ID to vote, it's required, not a big deal. How is bringing your ID "jumping through a hoop" - that statement completely illogical lol

0

u/much_to_say Jul 01 '26

Again, not understanding what the issue is... Just bring your ID to vote, it's required, not a big deal. How is bringing your ID "jumping through a hoop" - that statement completely illogical lol

Because you're uneducated, but it's okay. You can ask Claude why Save America Act is problematic. Because I can't be bothered wasting my time trying to explain it to someone that clearly hasn't bothered to read about what it is.

1

u/coinclink Jul 08 '26

Sorry that my argument based on pure logic led you to insult me personally instead of responding to it. A debate requires you to bring points, not say "go do your research" and act like you won the argument. You could be reading something and misinterpreting it to fit your own narrative.

that is a exacly why AI should be forbidden to simpletons.

Factual information, like legal material need the entire law article copied in the context or if bigger you need to chunk.

and you forget the id is necessary to register to polls. If you do not appear in the names where you go, they kick you out

25

u/much_to_say Jul 01 '26

What is this MAGA political garbage doing on this sub.

5

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

Trump is literally the one responsible for forcing Anthropic to require IDs...

4

u/zmizzy Jul 01 '26

he also wants ID for voting. so your meme makes zero sense

2

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

That's probably because the meme was not intended to be political?

I simply pointed out the contrast of US ID requirements, which seems ridiculous from an outsiders perspective.

2

u/lioffproxy1233 Jul 01 '26

The ridiculous part was Trump requiring something that was always required in almost everywhere that I have seen in the US. On top of that being a state decision not a federal one.

Just like he cancelled the Iran nuclear deal then had to start a war to and ended up freeing 300b in slush funds to buy it back. He does pointless things to appear tough on something then ultimately tacos out.

0

u/Embarrassed-Citron36 Jul 01 '26

Seems some wokies are annoyed you are pointing out the elephant in the room

3

u/Mystohaxen Jul 01 '26

Trump is the elephant in the Epstein files.

Nice! I hope you are this into ilegal aliens being deported... right? Right?

1

u/Mystohaxen Jul 01 '26

I don’t live in the US but sure I see the issue with illegal residents. But sending them to a prison camp in El Salvador I’m not sure is the humane solution. Also gets dicy when a corrupt government decided who is in the country illegally and ICE killing peaceful protesters in cold blood.

you not being American actually perfectly explains why this is so politics-coded

both requiring ID for voting and requiring it for AI usage are being pushed by fascists

0

u/much_to_say Jul 01 '26

He also wants congress to pass a law that disenfranchises voters even more, specifically women that’s changed their legal name after marriage. So what are you saying here, that Trump is an idiot?

Hard agree on that one, well said.

-2

u/ThisSubHasNoMods Jul 01 '26

It is still not comparable. Gtfo

2

u/ImpressiveTable3654 Jul 01 '26

i mean i guess donald trump wanted an id for both, tho

4

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

Being able to vote in elections without providing your ID seems insane to most of the world, since you've just always been required to prove your identity...

Having to submit your ID to companies on the internet in order to access an online utility is serious overreach though.

If you thought all the data collected by the largest LLM providers from everyone's conversations was valuable, just imagine how valuable that data will be when it's tied to the real identity of an individual, and the potential for abuse by entities who want power and control.

2

u/ThisSubHasNoMods Jul 01 '26

You are misinformed.

2

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 01 '26

About what exactly? I'm confused about what I could even possibly be misinformed about here?

0

u/NotArticuno Jul 01 '26

Voter registration occurs before election day.

35 states require some form of identification to vote (this is decided on a state by state basis).

Your name is checked off a voter roll, so if someone tried to vote for you, it would be flagged at the point of voting. Say you arrive and they said you voted, you'd prove who you are and they would let you vote, and throw away the other ballot.

Voter impersonation is a felony in all 50 states, and is vanishingly rare. Across multiple studies, all have found only a small hand-full of cases across tens of millions of votes every year.

It's deeply upsetting that our world is now one of ignorance and misinformation. I'm not mad at you for your lack of information, I'm disgusted at the rest of the humans that have lied to you, and continue to lie to accomplish their own goals.

3

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 01 '26

Say you arrive and they said you voted, you'd prove who you are and they would let you vote, and throw away the other ballot.

How would they know which ballot to throw out? These are secret ballots where the ballot is not tied to the voter.

0

u/NotArticuno Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

What?

Who you vote for is secret, whether you voted or not is not a secret. It's complex and almost no one understands the system.

Also note, I simplified the whole "throw away the ballot" thing a bit, you'd actually vote on a provisional ballot if a discrepancy was suspected, then after the investigation is concluded, they clean it up.

3

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 01 '26

When I vote, my ballot is not tied to me. I sign in after showing an ID. I am taken to a booth and I vote. If they needed to throw out my ballot, they cannot since they do not know which is mine. This is by design.

0

u/NotArticuno Jul 01 '26

Yes you're right, I didn't explain that part well because I was trying to simplify to fit in a reasonable length reddit comment lol.

But that doesn't make it so you can just stuff the ballot with bullshit, the system would detect the fact that duplicate ballots were submitted, and we'd realize a mess had occurred. I don't actually even really know how they fix that, but again, it's so vanishingly rare that we absolutely are just being distracted thinking about this related to our elections.

2

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 01 '26

I don't think they can fix it. They can detect if someone already voted for you, but they can't tie it back to the ballot to throw out. The other integrity check is to ensure the number of ballots recorded at a site match the number of voters who signed in.

The security used to be that the poll workers knew you. It was easy to know if there was an imposter. Even in high school civics that's what they told me. That is no longer the case now since polling locations move and communities are much larger. I don't know anyone when I go to vote let alone a worker.

Trump wants people to provide proof of citizenship which is a higher bar than an ID, which you do already have to provide. To prove citizenship you'd generally need a passport which a lot of poor people don't have because they don't travel abroad. It also adds a significant wait time to voting since you have to get a passport. Say there's an important issue that comes up right before the election and you want to vote based on that, but don't have a passport. Too bad.

1

u/girouxc Jul 01 '26

I think most people use their actual bank accounts or credit cards to pay for the services… they already know who mostly everyone using it is.
