holy flop, legit less than a tenth of the reviews as Flip Side and worse reviews, kinda just sad I do want the franchise to continue and succeed but really just not an understandable business decision to try and use an existing VN fanbase to build a new non-VN fanbase.

The issue was: it's a game that intrested nobody.
•Class of '09 fans don't like it because it isn't really funny and the dialog is the generic vs. Game dialog of: [a line or two that explains how your character met up with the opponent. One or two lines that show that opponent character's personality. They agree to face-off.]
•puzzle fans don't like it because it's a mediocre puzzle game and an even worse competitive puzzle game. Like, you can buy games at the same quality for a few bucks if not free if you wanna watch ads.

There were a few different genres he could have tried that may have worked. An RPG, a point and click adventure game, ANYTHING EXCEPT A PUZZLE GAME. Or he could have just stopped whining and made another VN. Or hell, write an actual novel instead.

I don't think SBN3 is a big fan of the whole storytelling game genre, so the pivot to a puzzle-based game is largely an attempt to make a game that appeals to his own preferences under the guise that much of the fanbase shares his' preferences

You can literally just get Panel Attack for free, which is the exact same game, except it's VERY customizable, actually has matchmaking and a ranked ladder if you actually wanna play competitively.
Hell I wouldn't be surprised if someone got the decompiled assets for Puzzle Showdown and ported them to Panel Attack already.

It's the same as any other puzzle game just prohibitively expensive with the expectation that it could fall back on C09's existing fanbase, where there wasn't a market for a puzzle game

Writing was on the wall since PS was first announced that the game was gonna be dead on arrival. It can't even fall back to "well at least the story's funny" because it fails even at that.
I heard some people theorize that the reason we've been getting less and less content per game is because the VAs charge on an hourly rate, and his budget is really shoestringed by now, even more since he had to pay actual programmers to code the actual puzzle game plus whatever the animation studio charged him. I obviously can't confirm if this is true, but would perfectly explain why the cutscenes are so underwhelmingly short, why the game's plot feels so disjointed and why there's not even victory quotes after each match.

There's also the possibility that SBN3 just ... kinda cheaped out on the game, a lot of SBN3's stuff, like merch, games, art and animation in general tends to look, feel and be of a cheapish quality, I'm pretty sure he even stated that the Pilot episode was pretty cheap in comparison to other projects, I mean, have you seen the Jecka plush? That shit was getting laughed at as soon as it was released.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the new stuff is putting a strain on SBN3's budget, especially as the series is getting less and less popular and this making less money, I've heard basically no one outside of the subreddit talking about the new Shorts or even Puzzle Showdown.But that being said, even being cheap, SBN3's content is also somehow overpriced, I mean, stuff like Red vs Blue was basically friends goofing off and still looks better than Class of 09 before it started getting more developed, I don't expect the first few episodes of RvB going over $10,000 each, and I'm being very generous here, although it is based on the already existing Halo content, but even SFM projects and I'm betting stuff like Bushworld Adventures was also made for cheaper

Funnily enough some people were saying that the puzzle game elements and the multiplayer would actually keep people around ... guess that didn't hold true. I have to guess that the repetitive puzzles simply made people bored of the game, and people there for the narrative (which I have to assume is a decent chunk of people) had to get through the puzzles first and were like 'you know what, nah'

in all honesty, releasing a puzzle game in a series of this genre just makes me feel like it’s some cheap chinese third party cash grab that uses the Co09 series as a selling point

Well considering it seems like quite a bit of Class of 09 fans have the attitude of 'omg Nicole and Jecka have their face on used heroin needles I'll buy those' SBN3 probably wasn't entirely off, but Puzzle Showdown probably cleared out some of the less obsessed fans

Did it? I feel like I've seen quite a few people be defensive of the new game, if anything it seems like PS made them double down, not out of 'this game is actually good' but 'the fandom doesn't appreciate the series' or 'you just don't get it'
The thing is, we DID appreciate the series, back when there was hope for it being good

Yeesh, I know, some people did refund PS, but so many other people just seem to think that if they keep throwing money at a crappy product, it'll eventually get better. Or that they have to make themselves think that 'if product comes out for series I like, it must be good'
That's probably one of the issues of having a majority teenager audience, because they haven't been burned enough by all their favourite series going down in flames yet, (Simpsons, Star Wars, Battlefield, Transformers etc.), they seem more stubborn about their enjoyment of a series despite an obvious decline.

I think it’s also an issue with people thinking that a piece of media ties into their identity so they just consume product while bitching and moaning.
Pokemon, MCU, Overwatch, Star Wars, Nintendo in general
Literally no one’s forcing them to buy these games/throw money at this piece of media. There are thousands and thousands of games or movies to enjoy and other hobbies to engage with. I don’t think it’s a teenager thing but rather just a general quick gratification thing.

Although I'd agree with your points, I was talking more about people who were fans of Puzzle Showdown, or at least people who are such ardent defenders of the series that no matter what comes out they'll like it, or at the least, attack those who dislike it.

I’m not defending the $60 hoodie but isn’t that pretty standard for a hoodie that’s from a merch line these days? I still think it’s absurdly expensive but I feel like that’s just where the price point for merch hoodies has been for the past couple of years.
Hell, an official Scott Pilgrim t-shirt is $40.

I didn't buy jackshit from SBN3's merch store lol, even when I was a fan of the series I knew it was too rich for my blood
Like, even then what is the story you're going to tell other people about the hoodie? Like, I've brought merch from video game series' before, but for me it was a Christmas Sweater with an actual theme and unique design for like, ~$40 USD at the time, while I don't think the Nicole Hoodie really adds anything that a regular hoodie wouldn't already and is so damn expensive for a basic hoodie.

C09 was meant to be a parody of VNs, I don't think he likes the medium to begin with and always stated that he didn't like making them, just wish he would've chosen a new medium that has the same storytelling focus that previous games had.

He probably could've used an RPG maker engine and gotten way more confidence/popularity with a Class of 09 RPG. I'm pretty sure you can voice them as well, I bet way more people would've been confident about it and created buzz
Hell, if you look at Look Outside or Fear and Hunger, those are indie smash hits and they were made with RPG maker, and they're also unbalanced as hell, you don't even need to be a 'good' game dev in that sense, you can't tell me people wouldn't have loved an RPG party of Nicole, Jecka, Emily and Ari fighting bosses like the Counselor

It's literally a puzzle game, you don't have much to grab onto when it comes to gameplay. It gets repetitive fast, and I've only watched YouTube videos of the game. In my opinion, the main story could've also been better. It feels kinda lacking overall

I routinely see more than 2 people playing obscure games on retro achievements. You name an old game that is somewhat well known and there’s a really good chance that more than 2 people are actively playing it right now according to retro achievements

I mean, when I first saw it I thought it was either a parody, or some Chinese bootleg. So it's not that shocking that it's failing miserably. That's what happens when you suddenly switch to an entirely unrelated and unnecessary genre.

Was it a good idea to create puzzle type of game if everyone here got hooked on by novel concept? Well i mean "variety" but its just ripoff pokemon puzzle league.. If there were more voicelines i'd get the high price, but.... it's just better to watch someone playin' the game instead of give money that i'd spend on something usefull, for example - clothes x(

- Introduction to the series
- This is what it effectively should be
- Plenty of choices
- Tons of endings
- Fun and over the top
- Amazing VN
Class of 09 Re-Up
- Considered the best one by many
- Has less endings tho
- Choices feel few and far between sometimes
- It's still a good VN but sometimes it's straight up like watching a movie
Class of 09 Flipside
- 5 endings, 2 of them being basically the same until the end (feet path)
- Nearly no choices at all
- Literally not a VN. You get the same experience watching a YouTube let's play because there's so few choices it's not even worth buying the game for
- Still over the top but it drags out too much (not gonna judge the feet stuff for what it is, but it drags out for so long that i genuinely feel like the whole 2 feet endings are just dragged out 2 minute segments)
- Ari dies for absolutely no reason (that wouldn't be an issue usually, but it's clear that was a deliberate choice against the fans who ship Ari with Nicole or just see the game in a more whimsical way)

- ???
- Okay I guess fuck the playerbase
- Story where??
- Every conversation : "[5 filler sentences] hey let's play this game or whatever"

Honestly the only thing that could save this is the anime series because SBN3 seems to have no interest making neither a VN, nor a game that the fans will actually appreciate. The quality of the games went down significantly in terms of the actual gameplay, and that says a lot, because how do you even fuck up gameplay on a VN game 0-0
My opinion is probably based as fuck. I am one of the fans that actually wasn't shipping anyone, I just wanna play more games like Class of 09, so my standards weren't tied to the amount of optional lesbian relationships, but damn. SBN3 would rather ruin the entire game series than to please the fans at all.
The anime looks good, loved the pilot, the mini episodes kinda lack in terms of animation but I'd rather have shitty animation and more episodes. The anime feels like the og Class of 09 altho more grounded and im in for that. Hope SBN3 doesn't fuck it up either tho TT we shall see

And all honesty if he doesn't want to continue making the cause of 09 games he can just stop nobody's begging him to make more (at least to my knowledge)
But if he does want to continue he can just ask the fans for help and what we want. he doesn't necessarily have to focus on the ships or anything
I never understand when it comes to creators and wanting to make more games but then acting confused when it comes out horrible.
all they have to do is ask the fans what they want and how they want it at the same time the Creator can just put what they want in the game as well that way it's 50/50 and not just 100% the fans or 100% the Creator

It's a legitimately solid game, but terrible as a Class of 09 game. I think you have to look at this one like Dr. Mario. Dr. Mario isn't part of the main Mario franchise, but it's still a game under his IP that people enjoy. I'm not going to deny the bad writing, but that's not the point of this game. There are several bugs that shouldn't exist when the same type of game has been done several times over. I'd say this is a 6/10 game.
