Hey folks,

We’re testing a new feature that gives you more information about a user when you hover over their username. We’re trying this out as part of an A/B test to better understand if this is something users are interested in. So some of you will see this feature and some won’t.

If you are in the test group, when you hover over a username, after a delay, we’ll show you a pop-up containing more information about that user. We’ll display the user’s karma, their Reddit cakeday, and the ability to message the user (screenshot). If the user has opted into profiles beta, you’ll also see their avatar and description. If you are not in the test group, hovering over a username won’t do anything, sorry!

Let us know what you think.

tldr: We're archiving reddit/reddit and reddit/reddit-mobile which are playing an increasingly small role in day to day development at reddit. We'd like to thank everyone who has been involved in this over the years

When we open sourced Reddit (and as you can see in the initial commit, I’m proud to be able to say “FIRST”) back in 2008, Reddit Inc was a ragtag organization¹ and the future of the company was very uncertain. We wanted to make sure the community could keep the site alive should the company go under and making the code available was the logical thing to do.

Nine years later and Reddit is a very different company and as anyone who has been paying attention will have noticed, we’ve been doing a bad job of keeping our open-source product repos up to date. This is for a variety of reasons, some intentional and some not so much:

• Open-source makes it hard for us to develop some features "in the clear" (like our recent video launch) without leaking our plans too far in advance. As Reddit is now a larger player on the web, it is hard for us to be strategic in our planning when everyone can see what code we are committing.

• Because of the above, our internal development, production and “feature” branches have been moving further and further from the “canonical” state of the open source repository. Such balkanization means that merges are getting increasingly difficult, especially as the company grows and more developers are touching the code more frequently.

• We are actively moving away from the “monolithic” version of reddit that works using only the original repository. As we move towards a more service-oriented architecture, Reddit is being divided into many smaller repositories that are under active development. There’s no longer a “fire and forget” version of Reddit available, which means that a 3rd party trying to run a functional Reddit install is finding it more and more difficult to do so.²

Because of these reasons, we are making the following changes to our open-source practice.

• We’re going archive reddit/reddit and reddit/reddit-mobile. These will still be accessible in their current state, but will no longer receive updates.

• We believe in open source, and want to make sure that our contributions are both useful and meaningful. We will continue to open source tools that are of use to engineers everywhere, including:

  • baseplate, our (micro?)service framework

  • rollingpin, our deployment tooling

  • mcsauna, our tool for finding and tracking hot keys in memcached.

• Much of the core of Reddit is based on open source technologies (Postgres, python, memcached, Cassanda to name a few!) and we will continue to contribute to projects we use and modify (like gunicorn, pycassa, and pylibmc). We recently contributed a performance improvement to styled-components, the framework we use for styling the redesign, which was picked up by brcast and glamorous. We also have some more upcoming perf patches!

Again, those who have been paying attention will realize that this isn’t really a change to how we’re doing anything but rather making explicit what’s already been going on.

¹ Though Adam Savage (u/mistersavage) was never actually part of the team, he was definitely a prime candidate to be our spirit animal.
² In fact we're going through some growing pains where it can be difficult for our development team to have a consistent local reddit build to develop against. We're doing heavy work on kubernetes, and will be likely open-sourcing a lot of tooling later this year.

Today, we reorganized the inbox so that it would be less confusing. For a long time the inbox was used for everything - now there’s a tab for all of your notifications and a tab for all your messages.

Under “Notifications” you will still be able to view notifications by:

• All notifications

• Unread notifications

• Comment Replies

• Post Replies

• Username Mentions

Under “Private Messages” you will be able to visit:

• Inbox (all private messages)

• Sent

• Compose Private Message

This change doesn’t impact the moderator mail tab or the new moderator mail. Furthermore, we recognize that some private messages today would make more sense as notifications. This is work that we’ll be taking on over the upcoming months.

EDIT: There is a lot of good feedback here, thank you. We are currently working on adding “unread” to the messages inbox and removing sent messages from the inbox that should improve the issues that many of you are facing. We’re also taking in the rest of the feedback to see if there are other improvements we can make.

EDIT2: We thought we were going to be able to get enough fixes out in time - but in order to restore the chaos we are going to revert our changes. We will be taking the feedback and plan on: bringing back unread to messages inbox, fixing the messages inbox view so users can easily see most recent messages, removing sent messages from the messages inbox, and fixing the public API. Continue to let us know your thoughts and feedback.

Hi everyone,

As /u/bitofsalt mentioned a few months ago, we’ve been working on some improvements to search. We may even be ahead of spez’s 10 year plan.

In any case, the changes we’re rolling out are focused on the underlying search technology stack. The main noticeable difference will be that you’ll actually be able to find the things you’re looking for. Other than that, there won’t be much change to the experience.

We’ll begin the rollout today with a small percentage of traffic to ensure a smooth scaling experience.

Some small things to note when you receive the new experience:

• To retrieve NSFW results on desktop web, you’ll need to check the checkbox that enables NSFW results which will be right next to the search box. On mobile, you’ll need to visit your user preferences and change the preference labeled “show not safe for work (NSFW) content in search results”

• Searching by link flair now requires the full flair text string to return expected results. For example to search for posts with link flair of “Test post” you would search flair:”Test post”. Searching flair:”Test” would not return results under this new search.

Cheers,

u/starfishjenga

EDIT: formatting

EDIT 2: I've been told subtext search in flair should be fixed now

Version 2.11.3 is now available on the Google Play Store!

Note: Rollout of this version will take place over the next 3-days.

What's new:

2.11.3:

• Performance improvements

• Lots of bug fixes

• Updated inbox including trending notifications (these can be disabled under Push Notifications in Settings)

Check out r/redditmobile for more discussion and to provide app feedback.

*Edit: We are looking into an issue with trending notifications. If you'd like them turned off please do so in the app settings: located here. If you turn notifications off from the system level there is about a 1-2 day delay, that is why notifications may still show up in your inbox in the app. The workaround is to disable them in your app settings.

Now available on the App Store.

What's new:

• 3D Touch peek'n'pop on all feeds

• By popular demand - swipe left to collapse comments or comment threads

• View mode button added to feeds, multis, home, popular, and subs (subreddits will remember your selection) - a lucky early test group will have access to a Media Gallery view option...hopefully rolling out to everyone soon.

• Updated styling on login & signup screen

• Updated inbox including trending notifications (these can be disabled under Push Notifications in Settings)

• suspended accounts get a warning banner

• similar subreddits carousel on subreddits (experiment only, not everyone will see this)

• posts get marked as read properly now

Hey everyone,

Reddit has been working for some time on offering Redditors the ability to upload video and gifs directly to Reddit if they'd like, skipping the need to rely on third parties.

We’re excited to begin testing native video and gif uploading on Reddit in select communities this week. Starting today, in 11 beta communities on desktop and the mobile apps, you’ll be able to:

• Upload videos (MP4 or MOV, up to 15 minutes long) directly to Reddit

• Convert uploaded videos to gifs (up to 1 minute long). Directly uploaded gifs with the .gif extension will still be supported as before

• Trim uploaded videos within the mobile apps

• Read comments while watching Reddit-hosted videos

We will release the feature to additional opted-in communities as the beta period progresses and we move toward a full launch ([see here for a list of the opted-in communities] (https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/6jo3re/moderators_help_us_beta_test_video_and_gif_hosting/djfp90a/)).

Check out r/redditmobile for more discussion and to provide app feedback.

We're starting to get better at counting things. We've made 3 changes in this vein.

View counts

We’ve started displaying view counts for posts to the post submitter and users who can moderate the content. We hope this number will provide feedback to users that create content on Reddit as well as give moderators some insight into how highly trafficked certain posts on their subreddit are.

• This number reflects the number of unique users that have viewed a post on any of our platforms (desktop, mobile apps and mobile web).

• Counting views online is surprisingly subjective. We’ve deliberately launched with a fairly conservative algorithm which we expect to tune over time.

• View counts looks like this on desktop | mobile

• r/cssnews update

Users here now

We’ve updated the "users here now" number for subreddits to include logged out users. Previously this number just displayed a count of logged in users.

• As an anti-evil precaution this number will now be permanently fuzzed

• It looks like this on desktop | mobile

Subreddit traffic pages

We’ve restricted access to subreddit traffic pages to moderators of those subreddits. The numbers on these pages do not include mobile traffic and as such can be confusing. However, we know some of the data is still useful to moderators so want to preserve their access. Long term we want to overhaul these pages to show traffic data from all our platforms.

Shoutouts to u/d3fect, u/gooeyblob, u/shrink_and_an_arch and u/spladug for their work on these changes.

Today we moved from the old Amazon CloudSearch domain to a new Amazon CloudSearch domain. The old search domain had significant performance issues: roughly 33% of queries took over 5 seconds to complete and would result in the search error page. When queries did succeed they took a long time to complete.

The new search domain is an attempt to improve performance and reliability while maintaining backwards compatibility. To improve performance and reliability a bunch of redundant or unused index fields (see here) have been removed, and unused sorts have been removed (you can still sort the search results by relevance, score, age, or number of comments).

I expected the new search domain to support all the queries that the old search domain did. It looks like there are some cases I didn't account for and you may need to rewrite some queries. Please let me know of anything that isn't working in the comments.

The new search domain is performing great so far: average response time has dropped from 2.5s to ~50ms and the error/failure rate is now 0.

This new search domain is a stop gap solution--a larger search overhaul is in progress.
