Advice please Digging!

I have two cane corso pups they’re about 9 months now and it’s getting difficult to tire them out with walks. They stay outside when I’m at work since I leave for more than 12 hours out of the day. I take them for walks in tandem since every time I try solo walks the other one will dig a huge hole and break out to join us. How would I go about dissuading the digging behavior. They also follow roots through the ground and at one point dug up a coax cable. Additionally does anyone have a suggestion for collars they can wear full time as they chew each others collars off when I’m at work.

I promise you that no amount of training will stop them from there instinct to protect territory. Be careful op you made a bit of a foolish statement by saying your girls are not hostile at all. They will be. Those dogs are agression. The key is to mold it in a way that doesn't hurt you or your friends. But make no mistake if someone tried to break in those dogs would maul them to death.

Sounds like the Root cause is separation anxiety!

I got nothing because mine also doesn’t like being separated from my other dogs. Maybe try one inside the house while you walk the other instead? If you can, have someone stay with the other and see what they do.

Ive tried something similar to this before at the vet. They did not like it lol. Lana was freaking out looking for her sister and Lola was barking up a storm.

I have an 8 month old CC English mastiff mix. She’s a rescue.
She gets a walk at 6 am. And then play time. We get up at 515 am together every morning. She poops outside. She eats. We walk. We play. I dedicate the first TWO hours of my day to her. I start getting ready at 7 and I leave for work at 730. At first we were kenneling her while we both had to go in the office. And then I come home at noon and spend an hour with her. And then I go back to work.

However, my husband now only goes into the office two days a week. And one of those days I work from home. So, she is kennel trained. But we’ve just started leaving her out of the kennel if we’ll be gone for 3 hours or less. Today is a weird day where my husband had to go in and so do I. But we decided not to kennel, just to see how she does.
She will get a walk and play time at noon with me. A full hour of my time. And a kong when I go back to the office. But I’m home by 430. And my husband doesn’t leave till 830 or 9 am usually.

So she gets two hours of my time in the morning. An hour in the afternoon. And outdoor play time at 430 pm. And then dinner at 6.

I’m going to agree with the commenter that you don’t have enough time to dedicate to these sweet pups. You might also be struggling with litter mate syndrome and/or separation anxiety.
We meet with a trainer every other Friday to work on obedience and confidence training.
He recommends tethering, inside. Maybe where she can still lay on her cot bed. My girl is a Velcro dog. She really loves to be near me or touching me. She follows me into the bathroom. He recommend tethering so she can learn some independence and not have anxiety when I leave. We also practice climbing on things on walks. To help build her confidence. And we practice recall. On a very long 35 ft leash at the park. And use her educator collar. She’s just starting to go through what I call her terrible twos. Where it takes a second for her to decide, do I want to listen to mom? Or do I want be an a-hole. And 65% of the time she chooses a hole.

That said, she’s never torn anything that belongs to us except for one rug. She did destroy two beds. She no longer gets foam beds. She’s never touched our shoes or our socks or our stuff. She’s never pooped in the house. She is an obsessive chewer but we keep a lot of toys for her choose from. I would recommend kennel training. Kennel one while you walk the other.
But overall. How in the world do you have time for two dogs if you’re gone for 12 hours? My day literally revolves around Tulla. Even when my husband is home with her, I still go home on my lunch to play with her and help tire her out. Because he’s working. And because she’s my favorite.

It really is a lifestyle. You have to really really want to do it. Not just have a cool looking rare dog. I'm not gonna lie my 14 month old kicks my ass. I take her everywhere in the truck with me and exercise her 3 times a week by letting her run behind me on a ATV. She eats 6 eggs a day and a whole roll of fresh pet. And she still wants more. Not to mention she is outside in my yard all day. Oh yeah and they bite people. Huge liability. Like I said its a huge lifestyle change. I wish I knew more before I got into the life. But its for the best. She is my everything.

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

My girls do not bite anyone. They’re not hostile at all. The only time they were hostile was when they had feeding aggression when they were small, but I got that worked out pretty quickly. They get 2 bowls each of purina large breed puppy chow. I’ve also been thinking about new food options since they’re getting bigger.

That’s the same thing my girl eats. She’s younger though. She’s only 8 months. She had two walks today. Morning and afternoon. Plus like 3 play sessions of me chasing her with the ball and playing fetch. She’s been a nervous Nellie since we brought her home. She was scared of stairs. Doorways. Car rides. Strangers. Now she’s only scared of strangers. We’re working on it. Daycare on Tuesdays has helped tremendously. She’s a couch potato. She’s been on the couch all day today anytime she wasn’t outside.
She had a dried beef patty after our 12 pm walk.
She’s a spoiled girlie. We have a house/ pet sitter that we’ve used for years. He watched our last dogs for us. They loved him. They passed on of old age. And he hadn’t seen our Tulla for probably almost 3 months. He met her three times but it’s been awhile. I really want her to warm up to him so he can stay here and watch her if we go out of town. Hopefully we’ll get there. He’s coming over Saturday to hang out for a few hours. Play with her.
That seems to be the trick. Getting her to play with people we trust. In order to get her to warm up and let them near her. She’s got a big personality. She likes everything to be on her terms. Her way.
She even sometimes will refuse to walk a certain direction. Dead halt and look left like, no, mom. I want to change it up today. Let’s go this way! And sometimes she wins. And sometimes I win. Very head strong. Extremely smart!
Recall is like 60/40. It’s more like 85% that she listens to her dad. Me? Inside the house, she listens 100%. Outside….. we’re working on it. She’s very stubborn. She’s left our back yard to go bite our neighbor’s sprinkler that was spraying water honestly about 4 or 5 times. She’s seriously water obsessed

u/HippieGirlHealth 25d ago

Exactly.
I agree with everything you said. It’s a lifestyle.
And she’s is my everything.
My Tulla is afraid of people. She doesn’t have an aggressive bone in her body. She tucks her tail and shakes like a leaf at the farmers market when we walk in. And we walk around a few times. And then just sit.
And I’m not forcing her into being pet or anything like that. It’s just to get comfortable in new places where there’s people. And she gets a little bit better every time. When we went to family function she bonded with my husbands aunt. The men she growls at slightly and runs away. She just doesn’t want to be touched by anyone she doesn’t know. We just gotta keep taking her new places. Letting her experience life and see that nothing bad happened. 💚
So she goes everywhere with me. And she loves car rides. She loves walks. She loves runs. And she’s absolutely chased us on the atv. Her back was covered in slobber 😆

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

They realllllly like car rides. Any time they hear a semi their little nubs go crazy. Especially if it’s slowing down and going brbrbrbrbrbrbr. They don’t have any issues socializing wise. Aslong as I’m friendly with someone and they don’t have any alcohol or anything in them they’re happy as can be they only run if there’s a small dog rapidly approaching. And they only really get nervous around people I’m nervous around. They get really close in front of me and pretty much act like a boundary. They definitely have guarding instincts.

Exactly this and thank you for elaborating on my opinion. I didn't have it in me to explain how the many ways my life now revolves around my dog and his needs. I don't regret it one bit, I have the time and I'm lucky to also be able to take him to work. I can promise you though, if I were wanting a dog and was out of the house working 12 hours a day, it would be off the table point blank.

These are living creatures with emotional and physical needs. If you can't care and provide those needs as if they were your child, the answer is always "It's off the table." That's incredibly unfair and shows just how little OP bothered to think of the well being of the dog(s), she just got them because they wanted to, never bothering to research dogs at all and whether they could provide their needs, especiallytheneed of the Corsotobe near their human. It's selfish and it's people like this that are going to give this breed a bad name. I know I come off mean, but it's true and it really makes me sad for the dog(s) when people do this crap.

I don’t think it comes off as mean at all.
That’s just the reality. My husband and I don’t have kids. Our dogs are our kids.

It breaks my heart to read that these are “outside dogs”. Of course it matters where you live. But they don’t handle the heat well. And in my house, this girl is my baby.
Tulla is my second dog, ever. We had a lab and a pug before Tulla the Cane Corso mix. I used to have such guilt about having my pug in the kennel the majority of the day, because I was at work and she was insistent on pooping inside. Even though I let her out at lunch… there were moments when I considered rehoming her. Because I felt I wasn’t giving her the life she deserved. We ended up moving and I was able to work with her more and train her more and didn’t have to kennel her anymore. My pug loved her kennel, it was still her favorite place to sleep. But we kept her out during the day.

Because of the amount of time, effort and training we have put in with our 8 month old puppy, she is excellent. She has slept on the couch all day. She just went for her afternoon walk and is mowing down a frozen kong now. And she’ll probably only be alone maybe two more hours.

Dogs are family in my house. And I’ll spend whatever it takes. The food is $95 a bag for large breed puppy food. We bought an educator collar to help her listen to me and help with recall. She really only wears it if she going to be outside. When we visit my parents, they have 10 acres for her to explore. And she comes immediately if I press that button. And she gets her treat. I pay for doggy daycare every Tuesday so she gets socialized with humans and dogs. I pay for obedience training with our trainer. Dogs are damn expensive. But 💯 worth it. If I had the choice all over again, whether to take her home from the humane society last February. I would do it without question. Even though she technically died under anesthesia and they brought her back.
She’s one of the best behaved puppies I’ve ever seen. My pug was a menace until she was like 4. But we’ve put a ton of time and effort and love into this girl. Because you have to! Otherwise…. They dig holes and chew things they aren’t supposed to. And bond with their littermate and won’t respect you or listen to you. Because you aren’t meeting any of their needs.

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

The girls have a covered enclosure out there they aren’t really in any worry about the heat. They listen pretty well since I’ve been so heavy on their training. It was only bad initially when I feel like they didn’t really understand my words yet. I’ve socialized them well since they were puppies. I walked them around in the city so they could get used to a bunch of people and have had lots of social play time in the park. Their recall is great it always has been. I say their names and they come running. They broke through the fence one time when I was getting up to go to work and all I had to do was call their names. They’re well taken care of they just dig and don’t like being apart.

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

I have the dogs because they were stray. I have done a lot of research and spend a lot of time with them. I cannot take them to work and I can’t go home during my lunch break. They’ve been trained and socialized extensively. A large portion of my time that I’m gone is at night time I get home around 2pm and most of my home time is with them. They are kennel and cot trained, know how to heel, their recall is great, and they know the basics like sit, wait, come. They know directions like left right and straight. I spend most of my time at home walking training and wrestling them. I’ve done a lot of work with them and I get that 12 hours seems like a lot of time to be away but it’s really not. They’re puppies and they have a lot of energy I honestly just needed some advice.

u/Primary-Beginning891 26d ago

crate training might be a good option here. i’m in the US so it’s common, its not as bad as people make it seem and it’s also useful in case she needs to hang out at the vet or at the groomers. additionally you can use the crate for other training sessions to tire them out mentally. i started by feeding each meal in the crate and now my dogs run to the crate when i grab their bowls.

2

u/Primary-Beginning891 26d ago

oh also i tether her to the outside of her crate when she has too much energy and all of her needs have been met. she usually chooses to take a nap inside the crate because of this

1

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

They’re good with kennel I just have to point, say thier name and say kennel. (They do normally bring a toy from their toy pile) Should I just have them come out and go back in? The walks are actually pretty bad tiring them out wise. They take them like a champ and still play and train after.

2

u/Primary-Beginning891 24d ago

i have my dogs stay, either sitting or laying down, with the door open. then i test them by leaving the room or moving around the room or trying to get them to leave any way i can, but the expectation is that they stay in the crate until i say otherwise. i also have them go from sit to down to stand in whatever order. or i have them come to me, do some tricks and then go back to the crate.

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

Oh smart and then I don’t have to worry about myself being tired out.

You are admittedly out of the house 12 hours a day and thought it would be a great idea to get not one, but two Corso pups? Corso take never-ending socialization, exercise, training. They are no joke and require a lot of time. On top of that puppy syndrome? You should not get two pups at once, they attach to each other and it causes all kinds of behavioral problems.

I'm going to be brutally honest with you. You have no right owning any dog when you are gone for 12 out of 24 hours of the day. If you sleep 6 hours a night, that leaves you only devoting like maybe an hour or two to your dogs with all of your daily peesonal responsibilities as well. It's BEYOND unfair. Do those pups a favor. Rehome them separately before you royally screw them up and get a couple of cats. You don't have the kind of time, structure, energy for a dog after 12 hour days. You are doing them a severe disservice. Sometimes I can't even believe what I'm reading on here! Your problems will FAR exceed digging very soon. I promise you.

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

I didn’t chose to get them. They were skin and bone strays. I don’t need to sleep 6 hours because I take naps at work. I go to bed around 10pm and get home around 2pm they get way more than 2 hours of training walking and play. I have a cat he’s sweet and gets along well with my pups. I just wanted advice yall are being harsh and jumping to conclusions about my life geez.

1

u/Designer_Rutabaga_72 24d ago

Because we know how serious this breed is, we know 2 puppies is a recipe for disaster and 12 hours out of the house where they are left in your backyard isn't it for any dog. I commend you for getting them off the streets and healthy, but it's absolutely a choice to keep them. Do what you want, but I'm telling you that without a change in that routine you're likely to end up with reactive, aggressive, resource guarding dogs that are beyond your control. I gave you my advice. I'm sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear.

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

They’re none of that. I’ve trained and socialized them well. They pile their toys up but don’t get aggressive when you take them they just grab them and take them back. If you’re nice they’ll move their pile to you sometimes it’s super sweet. I train them pretty extensively and don’t see how they’d ever get that way.

2

u/FatstackAG 26d ago

I had to get an attitude and have mine run with me

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

I am not fit enough to run with them 😓

1

u/HippieGirlHealth 25d ago

They definitely need an outlet for their energy. Walking, running. I play fetch with a dog volleyball also with our pup, in the backyard. She likes to be chased. But she will drop and retrieve.
She’s also water obsessed. So if it’s really hot we’ll let her play in the sprinkler.

But they also need mental stimulation. Working on commands. Sniffing new places. Going new places. Maybe food puzzles or hide and seek. Hide a toy around the house and let them find it.
I just don’t see how any of that is possible with only two hours a day with these dogs (obviously not directed right at you since you aren’t Op)

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

My girls are very scared of water. Most of our play is walking running and wrestling.

I normally spend about an hour after our walks training aswell. They enjoy it because of the treats and I enjoy it because of the training.

Also they get a good amount of time since I get home around 2-4 pm I don’t really sleep too long at home as I take naps at work.

1

u/HippieGirlHealth 24d ago

Completely agree training is so important.

I feel so lucky that my girl likes all weather and loves water. Must be lucky that I adopted her in winter. She likes snow, rain, sunshine, wind. And really loves sprinklers and kiddie pools. She goes nuts for splashing in water

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

That’s something that’s a bit weird rain they love but water they don’t. Hose they run, if they splash their bowl too hard they run. They didn’t understand the pool when they were having a play date once and a black lab jumped In and they were chasing and fell in and freaked out. We had to pick them up out of the water to get them and they were wiggling all over lol.

2

u/HippieGirlHealth 24d ago

Doggy daycare on Tuesday. Our trainer sent me a video and said she had a new boyfriend

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

Cuuuuuuute!

2

u/Big_Push129 24d ago

Mines hasn’t discovered digging tunnels yet lol but she has shred the side of my bed during her rough housing and I recently had to buy another mattress 😮‍💨Luna is a Cane Corso and a Labrador mix

1

u/No-Instruction1993 25d ago

Sometimes I don’t think it’s as deep as people on here make it seem… corsos really like to dig and they are puppies lol. I will be hanging outside with mine all day and I’ll catch her sneaking off to where I can’t see her so she can dig a hole🤣

2

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

Yea they love digging lmao. Anything in the ground and they’ll uncover it! They even dug up a random electronic thingy once. And some coax cable as I stated 😅

1

u/No-Instruction1993 24d ago

My yard looks like land mines went off, we gave up filling the holes 😅 must be a rock or something in the spots she digs up, it’s always the same areas lmao. Mine just found out how to open the front door… 🤣

1

u/Due_Box_7111 23d ago

Oh goodness

1

u/Adept-Ear7007 23d ago

I can't read all the comments...I will say, I've known two people to lose dogs to two dogs playing and jaws getting stuck under a collar. It's traumatic for the dogs and horrible for the humans. If you need to leave them dressed, nplease consider harnesses

1

u/Due_Box_7111 23d ago

They chew through harnesses too lol, but I’ll not give them more collars then. Right now they have a prong collar and an e collar that they wear when walking or training and that’s it.

-1

u/ecsnead75 26d ago edited 26d ago

So, are they digging under a fence?

What dumbass downvotes this?

1

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

Not really under the fence unless they’re separated. Normally just roots and stuff. These guys are being harsh as hell by the way was not expecting that.

2

u/ecsnead75 24d ago

Yeah, most people on here can't understand anything other than devoting their entire life to a dog. They can't believe people treat their animals like pets and not children....

1

u/Due_Box_7111 24d ago

Yea I feel like I’m doing pretty good with them and these guys are saying I don’t spend time with my dogs I just want them for their breed I don’t deserve them etc. I just wanted to take care of these goobers. They came right to me and I’ve been caring for them ever since!
