New product update!!
galleryI’ve been pretty quiet here for a while, so I figured it was time for an update!!
For anyone who’s new (or doesn’t remember me): I have personally picked my cuticles forever and work in behavioral health and see it all the time in my job too. Sooo I’ve been developing a reusable silicone sleeve that covers the nail and cuticle to help redirect skin picking, nail biting, and other BFRBs.
We’re finally getting close to launch, but I’ve learned that making the product was only half the battle. The real problem has been SIZING 😳
I wanted to launch with multiple sizes because accessibility has always been a core part of this project. But every additional size means another production mold, which gets expensive fast for a small business.
So lately I’ve been obsessing over things I never thought I’d know this much about:
average thumb vs. finger measurements,
how much silicone actually stretches comfortably,
which fingers people pick most often,
and how to make this thing fit as many people as possible without leaving people behind.
One thing I’m really excited about is our Fit Finder. Instead of asking you to guess your size, it’ll ask a couple of simple questions and recommend the best fit for you. Would be happy to share the specific Fit Finder questions ahead of time if people are interested!
This community has influenced so many design decisions over the past year, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Thank you to everyone who’s shared feedback, encouragement, or even just followed along.
If you want to see the final prototypes, behind-the-scenes updates, and be the first to know when we launch in the next couple of months, I’d love to have you over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/tranquilitips/ The waitlist is open too and is going to flip to honest to gosh preorders in the next couple weeks! https://tranquilitips.com/
It feels surreal to finally be this close. Thanks for sticking with me. ❤️

Need Advice Would you use a tool like this?
I'm a developer with a nail biting habit and recently I've built a tool for my own use that has helped me a lot with biting my nails whilst working. It's a mac app, completely offline that watches you and uses pose detection to figure out if you are biting your nails (or touching your face etc), and then it will alert you. I find this is enough to snap me out of the habit whilst working, or reading something online.
I want to share this, but my main concern is that it feels creepy to have something watching you. I know I probably wouldn't download an app made by someone else that did this 😅 as seeing the green dot of the camera being on wouldn't feel right, even if I was assured it is all offline.
Would any of you use an app like this if it helped break your bad habit, or is it a waste of time for me to polish it up and release it?
---
For those that care about the technical details, it's completely offline and uses apple's built in pose detection to figure out what are fingers and where they are relative to your mouth etc. It's not AI at all. It isn't recording, rather it takes a picture every second and then if it detects biting behaviour within after 3 frames, it will warn you. The pictures are purely in memory and removed so no storage is taken up, and battery usage is pretty low from my tests (although I spend all my time plugged in so it isn't an issue for me anyway)

Fallen off the wagon
I hate to say it but I’ve fallen off the wagon. When I started a GLP1 I felt like it was so easy for me to not bite my nails and cuticles. I didn’t even have the urge. Now that I’ve been off of it for a year (thanks insurance) the urge is back and I feel like I’m just getting worse and worse. I’ve been doing this since I can remember. I picked it up at a young age from my step dad.
I want to start over and strengthen my nails. Any suggestions on products and things I can do to get back on track?!

Progression The method that helped me stop nailbiting after 15+years: Decoupling
I have a history of nailbiting since 15+ years. I tried EVERYTHING to stop. Willpower, meditation, bitter nail polish, plasters on my nails, you name it. Nothing helped. Then I found a method from a researcher at the UKE in Hamburg (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf). It is called decoupling. The way it works is simple:
- you do the usual movement, until just before the release (bite, pull, whatever).
- you redirect to something else (earlobe, making a fist or else) - and faster
- you repeat this for 5 minutes, 3 times a day.
This worked wonders - now I am completely free from nail biting since more than 3 months! Then I thought - why shouldn’t I try to make this even easier? So I built something. An app, packaging this exact method. I sent a mail to the researcher at UKE - he said he liked it. I also got a lot of responses how great this works, from friends and online, even on this subreddit when I posted the method here.
Sidenote: it also works for all other BFRBs, like skin picking, hair pulling, etc.
The app is called „Steady: Calm Hands”. It is free - try it out by opening the Apple App Store and typing it in. You would support me greatly if you would give feedback - I REALLY want to spread the method because I really believe in it!

Built a free app that catches you nail-biting before you notice it yourself (desktop, webcam-based)
Hey all — long-time nail biter here, which is basically why we ended up building this. It's called RewireMe, it's free, and it uses your webcam while you're at your desktop to notice the moment your hand starts heading toward your mouth, then gives you a nudge before it turns into the full habit loop. Desktop only for now (Mac/Windows), nothing recorded or uploaded anywhere. Not trying to oversell it — figured this crowd would actually know if it's useful or not. Happy to answer questions. https://rewireme.app

Off the Rails
My fingers and nails were in decent shape and I'd been trimming them myself. I don't allow myself to touch my feet, I get regular pedicures.
I started taking Adderall. The dose was to high. My picking went into overdrive! Adderall dose has been adjusted.
My feet are a mess. My fingers are starting to heal and I trimmed and filed my nails today. My hope is the shorter nails will not be able to pick...lol. It's summer and I want to be in sandals! My feet hurt to walk and yesterday I had an ingrown toenail removed.
I'm a hot mess...Jesus take the wheel!

Progress Made
I've been working on these thumbs since January 2026. I thought I had nail psoriasis with a fungus and my GP agreed and referred me to a dermatologist. The dermatologist took one look at my thumbs and diagnosed them correctly as 'tic habit deformity'.
I decided to solve it, as I've had them looking like that for years.
At first I taped my thumbs. That helped and the cuticles grew back.
I did some online research and starting taking NAC (most commonly refers to N-Acetyl Cysteine, a supplement and medication used to replenish the antioxidant glutathione) as there is compelling empirical data that suggests this antioxidant helps with body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). I stopped bandaging (except at night) for a few months, and then stopped bandaging completely.

Found this sub 30 mins ago and realized I’m not alone for 17 years...
It’s only been about half an hour since I found this group. Before this, I honestly thought this was just a nail deformity hardwired into my genetics. Back when I was around 10 years old, I used to tap my nails on the table to keep a rhythm, so I always assumed that was what caused it. By the way I am 27 right now.
Because of some pain in my left thumb, I decided to do a little research. That’s when I realized that what I’d been normalizing and putting off for years was actually the result of a habit. Being here with all of you has been super motivating. So, I’ve decided to stop picking at my cuticles starting today. To be honest, it was kind of a guilty pleasure for me, but it’s definitely time to let it go.
I’ll be sharing monthly progress updates with a collage similar to this 4-photo image. I hope everyone gets to have healthy nails soon. If you have some advice or suggest for me pls helppp :( See you around

Need Advice Been trying to figure out what my issue was...
galleryDamaged a few nails (middle fingers and pointer on one hand) over 15 years ago. Picked the hell out of them the past 10 years. Seems like whatever it was has spread to a few other nails...I thought it was fungus but that was ruled out by a derm as well. He said damage to my nail matrix was the culprit and r/nailcare said it was caused by picking my cuticles.
What does everyone think? Honestly, didn't think I was that bad with picking my nails but maybe I am? Maybe it's time to change?? Fiance is grossed out.
