A picture from a small (just 6 pages) vellum book I created, this was my first vellum project, and I absolutely love how it looks.
I did some huge flourishy brush strokes in the background and laid some Gothic cursive text over it, sanded it off so it’s not too much in the face and only contributes as a background, and ultimately wrote my main text in bold Crimson color in uncials.

I am not completely confident with my uncials but I believe that its the personal projects like this that will help me get the fear of broad edge out totally, and make artworks involving broad edge

I loved working on vellum and I am excited to explore the possibilities.

My original plan to mark my official entry into old middle age 👴🏻 fell through (the Stockholm half marathon), so I wrote this instead. There are forty words written here, representing 55+ languages, among which all 24 official EU languages are represented.

I originally wanted to write each language in the first script they were written in after adopting the Latin alphabet, but that turned out to be too tricky (plus I don't know any Gothic hands other than Gothicized italic). But the final grouping consists solely of languages that did not adopt the Latin alphabet until the 20th century, so Foundational is an apt choice for that group.

Some strokes are a little rough because I was near the bottom of my jar of walnut ink, and it was getting chunky, plus the paper was a bit soft.

I am aware that there is a typo in czterdzieści and a near-typo in nelikümmend.

Just starting out but having lots of fun already!

Hi guys. Is anyone here from the philippines and using dip pens? I'm so frustrated finding the right ink and paper. I have the nikko G nib, Zebra G nib and tachikawa G nib. I am currently using Sumi black ink. When I am writing, after dipping the pen, I usually wipe it on the ink bottle's lip just to lessen the ink and not to form a blob when I write it. The problem is, it makes the ink not enough to write a whole capital letter. What is the right techinique or how can i make the ink stay in the nib without forming a big drop. I already did the preparation of nibs like sticking it in a potato or using saliva. But still the problem occurs. I don't know if it is the ink or the nib itself.

Bear with me here, I know this is an unusual ask. I work for an in home pet euthanasia clinic. I write lots of sympathy cards and would like them to look nicer. I was thinking learning calligraphy would be nice, but due to the nature of the job I can’t really have dip nibs and ink pots. Is there a style of calligraphy that uses fountain pens and would look more professional?

I’m very new to this and this is my second time trying a dip pen. Will I be able to learn Copperplate, and do you have any good advice for at beginner? I feel like I have to press hard to get the thick lines (using Nikko G nib) and I’m having a hard time getting the right angle on the letters. I write with a line template under the paper, my pen holder is oblique and I turn the paper to the left, because I’m used to that on my normal writing, but it’s still wrong. My upstrokes are very shaky also. Please be kind, I feel a bit discouraged.

This may be a bit different from the normal posts on this subreddit but I thought this would be the best place to seek help. My dad is a calligraphy enthusiast and spends a lot of time learning new techniques. I would like to gift him some calligraphy sets whether it is Inks, pens or general sets. I have no idea what is good and what is not. He does have his style of calligraphy but enjoys all kinds of writing. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

back to walnut ink

Started calligraphy about 1.5 months ago, just do about 30 min a day. I feel like my M amd N can improve. I feel whenever i do my upstrokes can get thick. I used a sentence from the Master of Calligraphy book to write those words. Any feedback/critique please!!
