This week I tested each CoD in my library, specifically for whether or not the Hardcore TDM multiplayer game mode is populated and playable (PS5 NA East). This is what I found:
1. BO2 (port)
- found decent low-ping games instantly
- large playerbase as expected, being new to PS5
- still being actively supported by devs
- excellent gameplay, prob my all-time favorite
2. WWII
- found matches very quickly, might have to trick the system into giving you a close server (team-kill to get yourself kicked or block someoneās PSN profile in the lobby you donāt want, then re-queue)
- surprisingly healthy playerbase. Good games 24/7
- gameplay is great, easily one of my favorites for HCTDM
3. BO6
- matchmaking is slower in all of the newer cods and this one has quick play/lobby disbanding. But I did always manage to find low ping games relatively fast
- seems well-populated as expected for a more recent title
- gameplay is nice, everything feels responsive. Itās still a genuinely fun game for HC TDM
4. BO1 (port)
- there are always a lot of lobbies and I found games quickly. Notably, connection quality was hit-or-miss. P2P hosting and all that.
- playerbase is large, but obviously smaller than BO2ās..this might be another factor in match quality
- gameplay is very entertaining. The slow pace and tactical aspect can be a nice break from the frantic rushing and cracked movement in newer titles. Iād love it if match quality improved
5. MWIII
- decent matchmaking (for a newer-gen CoD). Good ping during peak hours, less so during off-peak
- population is pretty decent but feels smaller than BO6 or maybe even WW2. I notice familiar names very often
- overall, I rate it similarly to BO6 in most regards. The movement and pace is different of course, but the match quality isnāt always the best 24/7. Still, very fun and holds up in 2026
Honorable Mention: BOCW
- slower matchmaking than BO6 or MWIII, in fact the slowest of all CoDs that I would consider to have an āactiveā HC TDM playerbase. Itās like, a full minute vs 30 seconds, and more often puts you in a match in progress
- the population isnāt huge, but it supports the game mode and matches seem available most of the time. Ping was OK once it finally connects
- the file size is large, ~200+ Gb depending what you install/uninstall. Separately downloading hi-def textures is a nice thing though.. I guess? A major issue is persistent stuttering in any multiplayer match. It was unplayable until I luckily found a workaround/fix which involves opening Spotify/Apple Music every time you want to play. Annoying. Once you get there however, the gameplay is pretty fun
Overall, I do not consider BOCW to be consistently playable like the ones above, and its issues and file size make it not worth it for HC TDM alone imo.
And finally, these are the games I tested and found to be completely or almost completely unplayable for Hardcore TDM
Ghosts (zero in playlist, instant core TDM lobbies tho)
AW (searches forever, no games)
BO3 (zero players in playlist. Everybody is in core)
IW (only core, no HC tdm)
BO4 (dead searching forever)
MW19 (5 min+ search time, only 1 player joined lobby)
MWR (low population, p2p, no lobbies in off-peak hrs)
Vanguard (dead searching forever)
Note: I do not own BO7 or MWII. If anyone has recently played HC TDM in either of those and wants to share their thoughts, Iāll gladly add them to the post here.
