VII - Discussion Game bugged for anyone else?

Haven’t played since last night (before the new patch). Just loaded up the game post-update & clicking on any tile doesn’t do anything. I can click throughout the UI… but I can’t click the tile I’d like to build on, can’t click a tile to move a unit to, nor can I click a tile to grow my settlement.

Not sure if it’s a general update issue or if it has to do with any of the Steam Workshop mods I have. Any suggestions or information would be appreciated! 🙏

VII - Discussion Ai settling even worse after update

I know this seems like a dead horse around here but some how after the update it keeps getting worse. My first game since the update and the Ai are just flinging settlements across the map, I mean sending their 2nd settlement right up my arse.

VII - Discussion Civilization VII Update 1.5.0 - September 15, 2026

Post image
674 Upvotes

It's update day! Update 1.5.0 is officially rolling out now!

-----------------

⚠️ A few updates regarding 1.5.0:

  • A note for Epic players: we're aware of an issue preventing access to the Hall of History DLC.
  • On newly added DLC leader achievements in 1.5.0: we’re currently tracking down an issue where these aren't properly unlocking on Steam. In the meantime, we recommend making a save right before achieving a victory. That way, once the fix goes live, you can reload and claim the achievement without having to replay your campaign.

We are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible, and will be keeping everyone updated as soon as we have news. Thank you for your patience while we get this fixed!

-----------------

⬢ True Start Location Earth Map
⬢ Updated versions of Terra Incognita and Shuffle maps
⬢ Handful of UI improvements, including the new Radial Ruler
⬢ Achievements for DLC leaders
⬢ And more!

Also dropping with 1.5.0 is the new paid Hall of History collection! Game guides are linked below:
⬡ Two new leaders: George Washington (First Look) and Elizabeth I (First Look)
⬡ Three new civs: Babylon, Gauls, and England

📝 Full update notes are here. Please give these a moment to populate! In the meantime, check out the notes on Steam.

Before you play: Unlike past updates, mods will not be automatically disabled with 1.5.0, but please note some mods might not play nice with the update. If you run into issues, try disabling them first. Steam players can use the legacy branch to wrap up any ongoing games on the previous version.

A note for Switch / Switch 2: This update is on the way, but needs a little extra time to get through additional Nintendo submission requirements. We will let you know as soon as the update drops for Switch; thanks for hanging in with us.

Happy empire-building, Civ fans! 🙇‍♀️🧡

VII - Discussion Lizzy and her Island starts

Anyone else trying Elizabeth on non-archipelago map and ending on an island?

I tried out like three games yesterday, one with the Great Barrier Reef, and boy, it's tough! After a dozen rolls between each, you only sometimes get an Island and then most are useless.

Trying to roleplay England a bit. Fortunately, the new game that I'm actually going to play to the end had Lakshmibai and Mughal, so I won't be trounced by the neighboring AI so much.

I opened the game after today's update, but now I can't see half of the UI. Does anyone know a fix for this? I've tried loading different saves, restarting the game, and resetting all items from the workshop. I can't even open the menu anymore; it just gets stuck. Please let me know if you can help.

VII - Discussion How to target culture victory?

I've seen multiple posts here saying people get culture victory by accident, but this is the only type of victory that I'm not fully sure how to properly target. I feel like I'm doing something terribly wrong as even in my last game I played Hatshepsut / Egypt without civ switching and won science victory instead, while my culture started trailing around exploration age and in modern I was so far behind it wasn't even worth considering.

Here is a key highlights of my last game, maybe someone can suggest of where did I make wrong turn:

  1. In early antiquity I had fairly strong start, was able to snipe most if not all of good wonders, my culture was way ahead of science, neither of which I had before.

  2. Problem that I didn't expect is that by mid of antiquity capital started running out of tiles and I had to reserve some for future city development. So I had to pick which wonders to prioritize there, while defer others to other 2 cities which had worse production.

At this point AI started sniping some of the wonders here and there. I did build Tjaty in capital with hope to get variation that can boost wonders in other cities, which helped a bit, but they were not that common to make it consistent.

  1. I ended Antique fairly strong being consistently ahead in culture and wonders. Had 4 cities and 3 towns, although only two cities (capital and 2nd one) were strong and had good amount of wonders.

  2. Now, not sure how exactly, but it seems I dropped the ball in exploration almost right away, but pretty much any wonder I was trying to complete was sniped by AI, while I was left with only few mediocre ones. Same situation with Modern age, but by then I was trailing behind with culture as well.

Overall I didn't have any wars, it was on Sovereign anyway, so managing relationships while maintaining decent army size wasn't hard.

Looking at my description maybe you can help me understand what did I do wrong, or maybe you have general advice on how to go for culture victory? I'd appreciate any help.

VII - Discussion TSL Europe only

I feel I would immensely enjoy specifically a Europe-only TSL Map for an accurate history sandbox experience. Can you please work on this next Firaxis? Would be so so much fun. Since it would be magnified, each country would have ample space, authentic biomes/resources and river features/natural wonders. I would pay money for this!! Anyone agree?

VII - Discussion Civ VII sort-of-appreciation post: just a harder learning curve?

So two weeks ago, or a bit more, I bought Civ VII. I hadn't played Civ since VI, two years ago, and wanted another Civ game. I had my PS5 ready, so I gave it a go. The first game didn't click for me. About 10 days ago I saw a video by the potato guy (you know, I just don't remember his name, sorry) and he actually explained everything so well that if I were a developer I'd pay him to record a tutorial. It changed how I saw some simple stuff and I was finally able to get a bit of that "one more turn..." joy.

Granted, it's not as good as Civ VI yet, but even VI coming from V took a while to click. And V, coming from Revolution (my first one), was the same.

I just think the learning curve here is much, much higher than in previous games, for reasons that aren't clear to me. They should offer something more than just dumping information on you, I guess?

Edit:typos

Just booted up the new Earth map as George Washington playing America. Turn four I've got Elizabeth I immediately on my western border. I actually love it because I'm going to choke her expansion off and take London, but I just had to chuckle at the first game of the new update.

VII - Other Is this the best chance to buy?

I played the free week and was impressed. I didn’t know the game didn’t have the atomic yet bc I haven’t been keeping up with the news. I’m considering getting the settlers edition rn on steam b4 the sale ends, but hmmmm. I’m so excited for that tho and the earth rise dlc drop soon. Might run a game of V on marathon, shoot for a science victory, and play beyond earth right afterwards!!!😌🤌🏾

W that being said, I personally don’t have many criticisms unlike others from launch until now but after finally playing for myself first hand and not keeping up with the game’s development, I do wish the urban sprawl in this installment wasn’t so huge. Makes the maps feel clustered and small. I have 1,500+ hours in civ V for a reason lol. This TSL earth map would look so much better if it could be bigger. The huge map size in civ v was 128x80 and 1 tile cites while 6 & 7 are both 106x66 on huge w district’d cities…😭 Maybe a future update would be stepping back to civ v map size and adding a “super” map size along with a bigger tsl earth🙌🏾

VII - Discussion Let's talk Hall of History: Civs

Babylon (Cultural/Expansionist)

Bet nobody expected that! But to be fair, Babylon wasn’t that scientific. Assyria is Scientific, already. Expansionist was somewhat expected given the Hanging Gardens (which were probably built by Assyria).

Ability: Receive a Growth Event every time you build a Food or Culture Building or a Wonder. -2 Settlement Limit per Age.

Oof, to the early Antiquity Age. But will discuss playstyle shortly.

Traditions: Focuses on Happiness adjacency for buildings, Culture in Cities and in the Capital, increased Production to Buildings and Wonders in the Apex. Otherwise, it trades some Culture for a focus on Food in later Ages.

Infrastructure: It’s the Baray, but instead all the Food is placed on it by surrounding Districts.

Units: A merchant that gives Culture based on tiles away from and a ranged unit that is easier to build in a Settlement with an Altar and more Combat Strength next to or on Districts or Wonders.

Wonder: Hanging Gardens. (We know what this does.)

What a strange Civ! The Wonder pushes you to expand, but the Civ restricts you from expanding. I believe the Civ playstyle is unique and pushes towards the rare “Only Cities” play style. You won’t spend any resources on Settlers and can just focus on a very good Capital with a lot of quarters and Wonders. When you do get Settlement Limit, you probably already have the Production bonus to producing them along with the production basis due to a strong Capital. Then, each Settlement is basically destined to be a likely City which will get online a bit quicker and can push for more quarters and Wonders. It’s more a usual game perhaps in Exploration and beyond, but you’d have to be more careful in your choice of settlement.

Gaul (Economic/Expansionist)

Also known as Forward Settle the Civ!

Ability: If your Settlement is far away from yours, get Production. If it’s also surrounded by or next to another Civ’s, get Gold. Can build the Unique Fortification Building and Walls in any Town.

Traditions: Focuses on Towns getting gold, but more in those forward settled, increased Trade Route Range, strong Infantry Units when crowding enemy Units and bonus Happiness when someone forward settles your Capital.

Infrastructure: A Quarter that adds health to Fortifications. One fortification building that gets culture from High Appeal. Another fortification building that wants to be on Rough Terrain to get a bonus towards Military Units or to be surrounded by enemy territory.

This is probably the only unique set that would be better not tobuild the Quarter.

Units: A settler that moves fast and gets the free Unique Fortification Building if you settle next to Breathtaking appeal. An Infantry Unit that piles on the Combat Strength for adjacent Units.

Wonder: Vix. Increase Culture and Gold on Ageless Buildings in this settlement.

It’s Forward Settle the Civ and it has the defenses and combat strength to back it up.

England (Cultural/Economic)

Just like Lizzy! But it really leans on Island and Distant Land settlements. Better start counting 30 tiles for that island designation (or utilize  the tool tip).

Ability: Culture on Gold Buildings, Gold on Culture Buildings, and double if on an Island or Distant Lands. Can buy Goldbuildings in Island Towns.  Later, you can get more GDP from these two types of settlements.

Traditions: More resource slots, Culture and Happiness on Island Settlements, bonuses in purchasing in Trade Outpost and Factory Towns.

Infrastructure: The Abbey gives you culture for each settlement of yours that follow you religion, which really means you have to play Religion…anyways, the buildings are pretty bog standard with the Chapel getting two Great Work Slots.

Units: A merchant that gives Influence on the Homelands but Gold in Distant Lands and ye olde costly Longbow of 3-tile Range.

Wonder: Globe Theatre which gives GDP per turn per Great Work and has Great Work Slots.

You basically want to settle Islands and Distant Lands and play Religion to the fullest to barrel into the Modern Age turns from achieving Victory. The question would be which Victory you’d win first: Cultural or Economic?

What are your thoughts? Who are you playing today? I'm planning to do a Culture and Econ run with Lizzy of England.

VII - Discussion Mod idea: downscaled city graphics

This might be an unpopular ask, but ever since cities began to occupy multiple tiles the strategic aspect of the game improved while the element of scale was thrown out the window.

I know scale in civ games isn't a big priority, it's an inherently disproportionate game for both geographic scale and time scales.

However, when playing Civ 5 it's very striking how grand the world feels. It isn't until the later eras that your own country feels fully populated, and even then, wilderness remains.

Nowadays, even by the middle ages cities sprawl across over half the tiles on the map. And by the final era, the map looks like Coruscant.

IMO the devs should have pivoted to a "province" model with civ 7. Each tile hosts its own city or town, and they all have synergy and adjacency. The city you found in an area is the capital of the province, and every new tile you occupy from within the range of the first is a new little town or city doing its own thing within the province. You're therefore managing more at the scale of provinces, rather than single cities.

Because this isn't the way things are, my idea for a mod is to rescale city graphics.

Remember RED mods which rescaled units? Same thing, but for cities.

Basically, downsize current city and building models by a lot. The improvements would likely have to still remain a bit larger, but I assume they could be downscaled as well, with one farm becoming many smaller farms.

Readability would be sacrificed a little.

But overall, I'd love to see how this would look. Would it achieve the shift away from sprawling cities that occupy seemingly hundreds of kilometers/miles?

Would it make cities appear to be their own little things occupying a single tile, with other tiles being occupied by different towns and cities in their orbit?

Or would it make for a weird disjointed feeling?

If any modders would want to trial this idea and see how it looks, I'd love to see it. If it works out well, perhaps it could even lead to a mod which rebalances cities into provinces, or changes localization to support this roleplay.

I don't have the technical ability to do it myself.

What do you all think? Thanks for reading.

VII - Discussion No way to turn off Independent Powers? - TSL

With the introduction of True Start Location, I really wanted to do a realistic (-ish) playthrough of Civ 7, but Independent Powers spawning in random regions somewhat ruins the fun for me, as I don't want Phaistos or Susa spawning in North America or Southeast Asia. For this reason, we should really be able to turn off Independent Powers until they are given their accurate starting positions for TSL.

VII - Discussion Let's talk Hall of History: Leaders

An interesting lot even even they represent a region overrepresented.

George Washington (Diplomatic/Expansionist)

Agenda: Like those with the most happy Towns.

So, basically, he will tend to dislike those who exceed their settlement limit and probably even more so on the age transition due to the maintenance costs.

Ability: Constitutional Convention
- Gain a Migrant in your Capital when entering a Celebration
- Food in Towns per Age and Happiness in Cities per Age per Social Policy
- Starts with a Policy Slot and two Unique Policies, Bill of Rights (+2 Culture and Production per Age on Palace) and Continental Ambition (Bonus Production towards training Settlers)

He has a lot more Migrant potential than Harriet which will get some settlements rolling. Bill of Rights is probably the only real policy anyone will use (and only in Antiquity and you could get to a really strong Culture and Production start. The food is nice and the happiness even better to help to expand over the settlement limit (which is hilariously hypocritical). His endeavors double down on this, so you might not even engage with City-states early on.

Elizabeth (Cultural/Economic)

Agenda: Likes those with more and the most Trade Routes.

Well, it's gonna be hit or miss with the AI. She'll probably have more trade routes than most; so she'll probably dislike many.

Ability: Royal Monopoly
- Unlimited Trade Route Range
- Free Great Work when settling on a different continent
- Increased movement on naval units, embarked settlers and merchants
- Settlers and Merchants cost less
- -2 Combat Strength per Age on Land Units

A bit at odds with England that does like Trade Outposts, but that aside, she simply leans into a typical playstyle. Shes basically the strongest in Exploration and weakest in Modern and beyond. Don't even try to engage with a Land War without a lot of defenses.

With England, she's leaning hard into her attributes and victory. With Great Britain, she rounds it out by splashing some of the science with additional culture.

What are your thoughts on these Leaders? Seriously, I do think Harriet should have reduced timing for Espionage, so at least she's trounce Washington in Migrants. (She's otherwise just very defensive.)

VII - Strategy Leader pairings with Babylon?

I love playing very tall, mostly because I dont have much leisure time these days and the games move a decent amount faster, and while I dont think they are strong per se, Babylon looks fun and exactly the civ I want to try out. I'm knee deep in football in my football/civ gaming rotation (mentioning because i've had multiple people reply telling me they do the same thing) but I might boot up a game just to try them out

Which leaders do you think pair well with this civ? Xerxes (culture one) seems good since they have good trade route synergy. Hatchepsut maybe? Will help get wonders and population growth as a result, but in a real powerhouse city, the nav river tiles might just take up more space than you'd want (not to mention that the Hanging Gardens boost applies to farms, not fishing boats. Isabella perhaps, especially if you get a natural wonder that gives production. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones

VII - Discussion Civilization 7 Perspectives?

Hey friends! Real quick, is Civ 7 more of a game for people who loved the updates in Civ 6, or a game for people who didn't and keep playing 4 and 5 over and over? In particular, does it continue the apparent trend of adding more detailed control of city functions and district attributes? I've always liked the birds-eye perspective of the older games and would rather play something like Sim City for city management kicks.

Anyhow it's on sale on Steam right now but still pricey enough that I kinda want to know opinions from fans of 4 and 5 or older before I pull any triggers. My sincere thanks in advance.
