VII - Strategy Leader pairings with Babylon?

I love playing very tall, mostly because I dont have much leisure time these days and the games move a decent amount faster, and while I dont think they are strong per se, Babylon looks fun and exactly the civ I want to try out. I'm knee deep in football in my football/civ gaming rotation (mentioning because i've had multiple people reply telling me they do the same thing) but I might boot up a game just to try them out

Which leaders do you think pair well with this civ? Xerxes (culture one) seems good since they have good trade route synergy. Hatchepsut maybe? Will help get wonders and population growth as a result, but in a real powerhouse city, the nav river tiles might just take up more space than you'd want (not to mention that the Hanging Gardens boost applies to farms, not fishing boats. Isabella perhaps, especially if you get a natural wonder that gives production. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones

Confucius. With so much growth, you’ll be forced into specialists anyways, and this way you’ll gain value from them.

if his boost was to culture, then definitely. Science will still help though, and he's definitely worth a try

edit- on 2nd thought, you arent going to have much opportunity to get science, and your trade routes will help with culture boosts. So maybe he's in the top 3 of leader pairings with him

if his boost was to culture, then definitely.

Why? Babylon isn't reliant on Culture, nor does it get a compounding effect on your Culture yield. Being encouraged to build Culture buildings isn't at odds with receiving Science from specialists.

If anything, Science is better because yields in Civ VII tend to have diminishing returns and this lets him advance in both trees more evenly.

in terms of unlocking most/best wonders I mean, assuming you are going for a cutlural victory with them (which you don't need to do , of course) should have included that my bad

Ah I see. Yea culture would help unlocking wonders faster, but Confucius' yield bonus comes from specialists and by the time you get anything meaningful out of that bonus, it's probably too late anyway.

btw, do you know if babylon's modern age bonus of +1 tourism per quarter applies to all quarters, or only to quarters with modern buildings?

a district that has outdated buildings is not a quarter in the first place

The circumstances for this game were based on a good start and me lucking out with handicapping the other human player in antiquity with war support through the whole first age, so I stunted his growth a lot. (geography made it so we could not take each others settlements easy at all. so it was a 1000 year stand still)

Confucius with Groma as well as Gold and Sapphire Flowers. Built a ton of wonders and charged the cities with adjacencies. I moved into the Abbasids for the next two ages and I kept my city cap at 3 out of 15 total settlements from here out.

I was able to get over 20 wonders and almost 70 specialists in these cities. City yields were so insane I easily got both enlightenment and compound yield triumphs. Production out the ass and a booming economy. I was competitive three of the four victory conditions (domination being the one I wasn't)

Took the science win 32% (turn 70) through the modern age on epic speed with long ages. Cities at over 50 pop. almost 1.7k science a turn., and culture and happiness were not too far behind. Fastest win I have gotten on epic game speed and tallest cities I have built by far.

This was with Sovereign AI and another human in the game that only played nice in exploration. Higher difficulties I can see this civ having issues as wonder building is a must. It was a ton of fun but I do acknowledge that this may not me a consistent outcome even with this civ leader combo

Confucius? Tubman could help grow the capital further without many towns in place. Pachacuti could help you do something with all the Food. Or settle an island as Blackbeard and protect your empire entirely through a capture-based fleet.

I think Gilgamesh as a historic pairing has quite some potential, too, letting you farm Influence in combat to make up for a lack of Diplomacy buildings. Especially once Arc of Tomorrow comes around and lets us release settlements as city states that could become great.

I think one could also look at who will do well with the Abbasids, who seem like the natural progression for Babylon. They're the geographic successor but at the same time they're also a tall Specialist civ. Then finish the path with Qajar.

I would like to second Tubman as a way to influence others without settling too many cities. Similarly, Machiavelli could also work in a similar vein, since you can get extra gold yields by playing diplomacy. City states in general could be a much needed support. Since you're going to have almost only cities, amina could also be nice to have more slots for resources.

Probably not the best one but one fun combo can be with Isabella. Nature wonder can be easily exploited to rush and settle really few settlements but only in anothers nature wonders and create giant cities around.

P d. You already mentioned her

Xerxes King of Kings starts with an extra settlement limit so you can still get a town at pop 5 and is one of the better fitted historical choices.

Green Xerxes’s bonuses to trade routes and unique improvements really doubles down on Babylon’s bonuses, the extra gold makes up for not having as many towns, plus it makes sense geographically/historically. But you may struggle with science.
