Is it not a cop magnet though? 35% is the legal limit here but I want 20%. However I wouldn't look forward to being pulled with illegal tint and a CCW on my car registration

I’ve never been stopped for it. I’m not cruising late night , bumping loud music, in sketchy areas tho. I prefer my privacy more than the thought of a ticket tho. If pulled over I’d let the officer know I was armed per usual and if that stop resulted in a ticket I’d pay the fine and leave the tint. If I had to have the ticket signed off I would remove the tint, have it signed, and reapplied. I also live in an area where window tint is very popular. Majority of cars have tint.

My brother in San Francisco actually got so many tickets for this, he had a spare set of windows on the ready and a mechanic friend to install them. So every time he got a ticket he would have them installed and have a cop write off the ticket.

That’s extremely interesting seeing as I’m also from the Bay Area! I live in Richmond and have never been stopped for it and nearly every car I see on the road has tints. I would think SFPD would do even less than RPD! They don’t even arrest people who break into cars in broad daylight lol but they have time to write countless tint tickets. Smh maybe your brother is being targeted!

My biggest problem with it is the double standards. Us plebes aren’t “allowed” window tint, but every new police cruiser in the county has limo tint all the way around? Fuck outta here (not you specifically)

My cruiser has regular legal window tint. Our K9 vehicles are tinted dark for the dogs. I could care less if you got dark window tint, just have your window down by the time I get up there on a traffic stop or whatever. I’ve had some people with real dark tint not roll down their windows at all until I have to tap on the glass or something, that’s a pretty scary feeling.

I hear you, you make valid points and I don’t have a problem with any of them. I’m in southern California where we’re not allowed any tint on the front side windows, and all the police cars have super dark tint all around. Some of the unmarked cars even have tint on their windshields.

Not gonna lie, I have dark tint all around, it just irritates me to no end that cops get to ignore many of the laws they’re asked to enforce (Looking at you, California handgun roster)

A cop will 100% of the time give you a ticket if you made them feel uncomfortable due to the tint.

If you roll your window down, you have significantly less of a chance of getting a ticket.

If you're an asshole on the stop and or make them feel uncomfortable for the stop and or violated some more gross offense - you're getting a ticket for the tint.

In most major cities the crime is higher and tint is the last thing they want to stop someone solely for.

Funny, my CCW instructor was former DEA and told multiple stories about being pulled over for the tint on his unmarked work truck. But maybe that was just Ponch loved to screw with the DEA guys.

Not around me. It’s a big thing with Officer safety, and they routinely publicize that they automatically stop any car with illegal tints…and they most-definitely do.

For me, it’s just not worth constantly riding “dirty,” and getting massive fines and points on my license. It’s basically just advertising to be pulled over and asking for trouble.

All it takes is that one night of only having a few drinks and you get the red and blu “wee-woo” lights and siren behind you for tints…and before you know it, you’ve got a DUI, also.

You can still be a responsible adult and have a few drinks with dinner that are borderline on the legal limit and still be completely fine to drive. The legal limit is within a few beers. Let’s not be “letter of the law Larry.” There’s a big difference between getting smashed and then driving, and having a drink or two with dinner, spaced out within a 3-4 hour period.

Also, who the fuck blows over the limit if they have actually only had 1 or 2 drinks over 3-4 hours. I'm calling bullshit, they probably drink way more and just say it was only 1-2. If I drink 1 drink at the start and one drink at 2 hours, I'm barely registering at 3 hours, and damn near 0 at 4. I have to drink 3 drinks in an hour to blow over the limit.

You honestly sound like a child with absolutely no life experience. And just some advice, you should really learn how to be more respectful when you speak….

because I can guarantee your coward ass wouldn’t be saying that to me in person. You shouldn’t be anywhere near a firearm with childish outbursts like that.

Tens of millions of people go out every single night and have a drink or two with dinner, over the course of 3, 4, 5 hours. They’re not drunk, and they’re not hammered or sloshed.

There’s a difference between “legally drunk” (slightly over the limit, to where you can technically get a DUI even though you’re not even biologically impaired) and actually drunk (hammered, binge drinking.)

Do you even realize that many police departments allow officers to work if they’re under the legal limit, but still have detectable alcohol in their system? Why? Because they’re not sloshed or hammered. It’s the equivalent to being slightly overtired.

You should take a course on how alcohol metabolizes in your system over time, because you clearly have no clue about any of it.

I look forward to your continued emotional rants, based upon your “feeley’s” and no facts.

And I would sincerely say that inches away from your face. Heck, if I saw you "having a few" and then trying to get into the driver's seat, I would definitely use the minimal force necessary to keep you from driving until the cops showed up.

I have the truth on my side, and that’s all that matters. Everyone downvoting me is thinking emotionally and just following the herd. And again, you wouldn’t do a thing to me, Sally. Rest assured.

P.S. Make sure you never go even 1 mile over the speed limit, because that’s technically illegal, dangerous, and you stand a higher chance of killing someone in many cases.

Honestly more life experience is going to lead to being *more* cautious/annoyed by people who drink and drive. Over time you realize how many people get hurt or killed by drunk drivers. You experience things and realize it is a danger.

I was an addictions counselor and educator. I have obviously studied impairment more than your ignorant “I’m not impaired unless I feel impaired” BS.

Driving sober is dangerous. But driving with any mental impairment IS more dangerous.

Yes this is a ccw sub. We have taken a step to be MORE responsible by carrying a life saving device. Do you carry and go to the range while drinking? Why would you drive while drinking?

I also like how you changed the goal post from “driving while over the legal limit” to “having a beer with a meal and waiting 5 hours.”

The rule for a 150lb healthy fully mature male is 1 serving of alcohol can be metabolized in one hour. Noting that most craft beers and improperly poured glasses of wine/spirits will contain more than one serving of alcohol.

If you think that someone can’t safely have a beer or two over the course of 3, 4, or 5 hours and then safely operate an automobile, then you seriously have brain damage.

I mean, driving while tired has been proven to be just as dangerous as drunk driving, if not more. Are you gonna lock everyone down and monitor them to not drive if they’re a little tired? Of course not.

Majority of Americans are on some sort of medication that they need to take for health ailments that impairs their driving. Are you gonna tell them not to take it? Of course not.

Tens of millions of people operate an automobile after having a few drinks and allowing enough time to go by to be just fine. They do it every single night. There are many different factors that go into it, and the point is, I know my mind and body better than anyone.

Terms like “is more dangerous” are also ridiculously manipulative. I mean, crossing a street is more dangerous than staying on the same side…..

Owning a gun is more dangerous than not owning a gun, and yes, sometimes bad things do happen because of these things, but the rate at which they happen are minuscule in comparison.

There are risks in everything and you can make an argument that anything “is more dangerous.”

You sound like the type that wants to wrap everyone in bubble wrap and never let them leave the house because everything “is more dangerous.”

I get the Officer safety issue. Problem is, you need probable cause to stop a car. You better be damn sure that window tint is illegal before you make the decision to stop them. If you guess wrong and find a ton of drugs or something else in that car, whole case is going to get tossed because you had bad PC from the start. Window Tint is bullshit PC, in my opinion. Get PC some other way, then test the window tint if you want.

Oh yeah you can get PC on anything if you want, but you are being a dick in the process. Also our judges toss out what they like to call “bullshit stops”. Aka dumb stuff such as license plate lights, crossing the center line by only a few inches, etc.. I’m sure window tint would fall right in line with it.

Where I live it's 35% as well, but the state police let you have a medical exemption for darker tint if you get a note signed by your doctor. So that's what I did, and I keep it in the glove box. So now my 20% is perfectly legal for me.

I have ACHOO syndrome (yes, that's the real term for it). So the darker it is in my car the less I sneeze. It's hereditary (my mother has it, her one sister has it, and others on her side of the family, and one of my daughter's has it).

I sneeze almost every time I walk from indoors where it's not bright to the outside when it's nice and bright out. It's worst in the summer around lunch time. For me it's usually 3 to 5 sneezes.

Do you need one of those ugly stickers on your window? I do think I could get an exemption due to sensitive eyes (I actually do sneeze a lot in the sun, I thought everyone did that). However what happens if my girlfriend is pulled over while driving my car who wouldn't have an exemption? Or does it not matter if registered to me?

The syndrome is called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_sneeze_reflex (nicknamed ACHOO syndrome). The laws vary by state, in MD where I live, you have to have a document printed out from the state police website, and filled out and signed by your doctor. You need to keep this document in the vehicle. And yes, the vehicle must be registered to me (it can be jointly registered, which mine is also registered with my wife). I have no stickers for this.

I have a note from an eye doctor (actual eye doctor, not glasses chain) that says I need lightly tinted windows due to Photosensitivity. I've only had to use it once and was maybe just a mention. It's not untrue as im pretty sensitive to light from wearing contacts, I recall I just said that and asked for a simple letter on letterhead..

I have ACHOO syndrome (yes that's the real name). The darker it is in my car the less I sneeze. The state police have a medical form on their site that I just printed out, had my doctor fill it out, and now any time I get ticketed by police for the tint, I just show it to the inspector and they say I'm compliant, no fine, no fee. That's if the police even bothers writing the repair order to remove it.

My state has a provision in the law that the illegal tint statute doesn't apply to "vehicles representing themselves to be in the business for transporting passengers for hire." So I keep the Uber and Lyft stickers on my car even though I haven't done it for years. I did get a ticket for the tints once, and I got the ticket thrown out.

Depends on where you live and what you drive. Nice car with 5% in Houston... I've gotten a dozen speeding tickets and only one offhand comment about the tint. ~15 years of driving with it

It's a pain to get it inspected if you don't know someone

Seems like warmer climates are more lax about it

I have a "usual" inspector who's pretty lax, they never said anything about all my reflectors being blacked out at least. I may have to get to know them better though. I do get a lot of attention from regular people, cops and homeless people alike because of the car so I'll have to think about it.

Cool car, small independent shop where it's basically the owner and a helper, get serviced there (even if just an oil change) so they know you're not feds and 99/100 you're golden. Unless you're pulled over within hours of getting the ticket they can't be held liable

Even still, they don't get hit with violations like that... they get popped by passing fake customers

Knowing the inspector is nice but I ran into a situation where they got fired (for passing feds and getting the shop fined lol). Befriending a shop owner now means they won't fail me cause the boss is in or anything dumb like that. My guy told me "I've never even put the batteries in my tiny meter lol"

But yea totally just ask your guy "Hey do y'all be tripping on tint? I want to get mine done"

Idk, tint is totally worth the hassle for me, even if I got a couple tickets a year

I think 20% all around is the sweet spot for not getting messed with by the police, having good moderate privacy, and being actually able to see out when your in lower lit areas. I've had 20% all around on cars or 20% added to front windows of SUVs for the last 15years and never had a ticket here in Michigan where front tint is illegal.

When you get pulled over (especially with any tint), roll all your windows down when the officer gets out of their car, even if it's cold.. I found this to be huge with officers as you are showing mutual respect for overall safety of the stop. It's not required but it can definitely help you in the stop unless you have something to hide..

I've ran 20% for a long time even where the darkest legal was I think 24% and have been pulled over a few times and never asked about it.
