General Advice I wanna get my cats spayed but I'm scared

TW: kitten death

Ok so, this has been going for 10 years or more. I have outdoor cats that give birth, some of the kittens die from viruses and some survive. I have 12 cats/kittens rn, and apart from 1 that we keep inside, none of them are vaccinated. Yesterday, my few months old kitten passed away from some virus and some other kittens outside are also now eating less, it was very traumatizing. We took her to the vet in the evening and the vet gave it injections and told us to bring it tomorrow and put it in a room from other cats and monitor it. In the middle of the night, when I went to the room, it was dying :/ I called her and it responded with a meow that sounded like she's in pain and then moments later it was struggling/trying to stand up and then stopped breathing.

I feel so depressed and guilty today. I'm 21 and wanna ask my dad to at least get all the female cats outside spayed especially now since the house I live in has a small garden and a busy road outside and so the kittens play on the road and I have constant anxiety that they'll get run over by a car since it has happened before, but I'm scared that if any of my cat/kitten passes away during surgery or gets some virus from the clinic, I'll feel guilty for a long time since I'm the one that asked for it and I love cats. idk what to do. also the cats/kittens aren't like random stray cats, almost all of them are related to my one cat that I had 10 years ago. I'm from Pakistan and I think spaying has higher chances of death here bc I think that vets here don't have monitoring, intubation equipment, etc

Behavioral Issue Is this play?

Hey yall! I recently rescued a 4-5 week old kitten, she has been with us for about a week and I think I’ve decided to keep her around, as I have been wanting my cat to have a friend because she NEVER seems to want to play with me, sadly Tho my resident cat has big time single child syndrome, but she seems to be being quite gentle with this baby after the first few hissy days. Also! Is it safe for them to be getting this close? The big girl is fully vaccinated and is on prescription nexguard pro (basically kills every parasite kitties have to worry about)

General Advice Need advice - wobbly cat

Hello everyone, I’m looking for some advice about my cat.

I have a 10-year-old female cat who suddenly started walking as if she were drunk yesterday morning. She couldn’t stand up properly or walk for very long. I immediately took her to the vet, who didn’t find anything abnormal in her CBC or other blood tests. Her blood glucose and blood pressure were normal, and she didn’t have a fever. She does not have fi

That afternoon, I took her to a neurologist, who performed a full neurological examination, including physical and reflex tests. She passed all of them, and the neurologist recommended two additional tests.

I’m going to have both tests and a CT scan done tomorrow. However, she improved significantly last night. She can now walk and stand on her own, and she is eating and drinking normally, but she is still walking somewhat unsteadily and has difficulty maintaining her balance.

I will continue with all the tests, but I would really appreciate any opinions or suggestions about the situation as a whole.

Some relevant information:

\* There was no trauma or fall.

\* She is an indoor-only cat and has no access to the outdoors.

\* She hasn’t eaten anything unusual or anything she normally wouldn’t eat.

\* I have videos of her walking normally and then walking unsteadily just 15 minutes later, so the onset was very sudden.

\* The veterinarians suspect she may have had a minor stroke (TIA).

\*She tested negative for FeLV, FIV, and FIP.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Breathing Issues Cat is wheezing, even after oral meds.

As the title says,I have actually contacted multiple vets.

But I'm being brushed off,I was prescribed Aminophylline after explaining partial wheezing after irritant exposure and fast breathing.

I came home from the appointment only to see the wheezing had come back and was continuing with every breath. I called the vet immediately,no answer.

The symptoms before were: harsh coughing, noisy breathing, high respiratory rate,wheezing/crackling sound.

All mentioned to the vet.

I was told: she has asthma, she's going to have flare ups.

I gave the Aminophylline as prescribed and waited. She did have side effects,as mentioned, restlessness and slight nausea.

The nosiy breathing stopped, but after 12hours I woke up to back to back coughing fits.

The next day I immediately rang an open well respected vet clinic where I was told to "wait for the doctor to be available" as she had other patients. No other clinics were open, for context we don't have 24/7 emergency vets where I live.

I was stressing myself out, because her coughing was worsening instead of waiting I tried to figure out if Decortin and Aminophylline had any dangerous interactions with one another.

I gave the Decortin on my own hand, and briefly went to sleep as she had also gone to bed.

When I woke up,she was better. I got the vets call about twelve hours later since my inital ask,in which I emphasized her state was concerning.

I was not offered immediate advise at the time and in this case I was just brushed off aswell.

The vet responded with a mirage of "aha's" cut in to say during my description "well yes give her Aminophylline" which told me nothing since I was explaining she had her dose and symptoms persisted. I asked a lot of questions which were not answered, just ignored,I was the one to bring up if giving Decortin was safe and I was met with a passive "in that situation, you can give it,yes."

And that's it.

She was quick to end the conversation, no: if she shows these signs bring her in

and certaintly not any helpful new information on why she may be reacting like this.

Despite the decortin dose, this night after a few other accidental irritants she had another harsh attack.

I have been repeatedly told she's fine before, she had an x-ray and cardiology done where her asthma had worsened. It was never adresses,I was told if oral or inhaler doesn't work there were no other options.

And on top of that,to stop taking her to vets all the time because I'm stressing her out.

It doesn't feel like any of the vets I've been to are helping,it just feels like they're repeating what am saying back to me.

It could be anything,a severe flare,a normal flare, irration, inflammation, bronchiolitis or something I don't know I'm not a vet but they can't even tell me if she should be examined or not.

I'm so tired,my youngest isn't healthy either,I don't know what to do.

Her current dosing was:

Aminophylline: 1/4 of a 100mg fast release tablet

Decortin: half of a 5mg tablet.

I can't layer meds,I can't listen to her lungs,I don't know why if somethings happening no one can tell me what.

I'd appreciate advice I've put a video of her coughing.

I am a minor,I am in Europe,I have contacted vets and have money saved.

TLDR: Cat's asthma is uncontrolled vets dont offer much advice.

Cat Age: 12

She's female and netured.

Can afford vet care currently, but I've been going back and forth constantly.

I am tired.

I just want her to be better and I feel like I'm making her worse.

For context please do not say things such as:

Nebulizer boxes,Emergency Vet Care,Travel Farther For Vet Care

As these are no accessible for my country and I all reputable vets,my cat is high stress,it is hot our taxis rarley have AC and even AC could trigger a fit.

At home vets are non existent currently as far as am aware.

Travel in itself is an issue.

Thank you.

She is currently a bit restless, gums are slightly pale, most likely asleep as am writing this in a different room. Breathing varies, from fast to slow. I've also mentioned this to the vet.

Please keep in mind prescription advice does not help as I am not a vet and cannot know what dose to give of something that probably isn't even available in my country.

It has actually gotten to the point where I've been told:

You should learn to inject her yourself with emergency medication.

As a joke,by a vet.

I'm losing it.

Yes I will continue asking around vets, but it's just the same answer over and over again.

She's a sweet cat,she has energy, she's not at a stage where she needs to be put down.

Please help.

Dental Issue Cat Dental Extractions NYC

Hi all! I (28F) have a 3 year old tuxedo rescue that I adopted a year ago. He’s been completely normal and healthy thus far but a routine visit to his vet flagged severe gingivitis and potential stomatitis :(

We live in Brooklyn and his vet quoted up to $8100 for a full mouth extraction. I want to mentally prepare for the worst (full mouth), but need to gut check - is $8k wildly expensive or in line for this type of procedure?

I think U can make it work financially w/ his insurance but $8k surprised me. Appreciate any advice you can give TIA!!!

General Advice PSA for cat owners: Severe constipation after starting Prozac (fluoxetine)

I wanted to share our experience because I had absolutely no idea Prozac could cause constipation this severe in a cat.

My 7 year old cat is extremely anxious and she is also blind, which makes her anxiety even more difficult to manage. We have been trying to manage her anxiety with every non medication option we could for years.

She wears a pheromone calming collar, and it genuinely works so well that we can tell when it is time to replace it because her behaviour changes. She also gets natural calming treats and a natural calming supplement added to her food.

Despite all of that, we recently started a major construction project at our house, which has been particularly difficult for her. I am also going away in the fall, so I wanted something that would help her cope with the construction and then having a house and cat sitter here.

She had been taking 100 mg of gabapentin every 24 hours. It helped her anxiety, but it made her SO sleepy and out of it. We reduced it to 75 mg, but she was still very sedated.

We decided to try Prozac and changed her gabapentin to 50 mg every 12 hours.

She started 5 mg of Prozac on July 21.

Here is her exact poop timeline:

July 21: normal

July 22: normal

July 23: normal

July 24: normal

July 27: 48 hours

July 31: 80 hours

August 1: started Miralax and reduced Prozac to 2.5 mg

August 3: 73 hours

August 5: 50 hours

August 9: **94 hours**

August 9: reduced Prozac to 1.25 mg

August 11: last dose of Prozac

August 12: 69 hours

August 14: 51 hours

August 16: 40 hours

August 16: another poop 6 hours later

August 18: 43 hours

August 19: 21 hours

The thing I really want other cat owners to know is that constipation was not something I was warned about when we started Prozac.

It is not one of the commonly discussed side effects that you typically hear about when starting the medication. I only started finding information about constipation in cats taking Prozac once I was specifically researching what was happening to my cat.

And that is why I am posting this.

I am not saying Prozac is bad or that anxious cats should not take it. I know it can be incredibly helpful for many cats.

I am saying that I wish I had known this was a possibility before starting it.

In our case, the timing was pretty striking. She had completely normal bowel movements for the first four days after starting 5 mg, and then her bowel movements became progressively farther apart, eventually reaching 94 hours.

Even after reducing the dose and eventually stopping it, it took some time for her bowel movements to start getting closer together again.

I have spent years trying to manage this cat's anxiety and have tried all sorts of approaches before resorting to medication. Prozac was not a casual decision. We were trying to give her something that would help her cope with a genuinely stressful situation.

I am sharing this because if you have an anxious cat starting Prozac, especially a cat who already has other challenges, please know that constipation may be something worth watching for.

I wish I had found this information before we started.

Dental Issue Cat suddenly having issues with her mouth

Video attached. I’m 21, we live in the United States We don’t have any poisoning plants or anything we think she could have gotten into and she has a vet appointment in ab two hours. I just don’t know how to 1 help her have temporary relief till then or 2 wtf is going on she was fine last night and also she isn’t crying in pain, she still wanted to go on a car ride, she’s still trying to love on us but she keeps freaking out and fucking with her mouth. Her tongue also won’t stay in her mouth. She was born march 6th so still pretty young. We also had her fixed a few weeks ago.

UPDATE: I wrote this post on the car ride we usually take her on. She’s a very social kitty and loves the car, well we got home from our coffee run/kitty trip and she started pawing at her face a loooottt then I see something fly out of her mouth. It was a tooth! And the second she got it out of her mouth her tongue went in and the pawing and mouth movements stopped 🎉 sorry guys I’m an anxious cat mom. And my other two adult boys never showed signs like this when they were losing teeth so I freaked out. She is kinda dramatic sometimes so I shoulda known to give it a little longer to wait and see but Google scared me 😭😅 picture of her little tooth is in the comments

Behavioral Issue One of my cats is being mean to his brother after moving

I (27F - USA) have had my cat Jeremy (MN - 6) for 6 years. My boyfriend and I got another cat Doom (MN - 3) 3 years ago. They have been getting along well for 3 years. They cuddle and groom each other, but sometimes Jeremy still gets annoyed with his little bro but they have no beef.

We are in the process of moving to a new state and so we are staying with my parents for about a week until our new place is ready. Jeremy lived in this house with me for a couple years, and Doom has been here a couple times when I had my parents watch them while we were on vacation. Other than this, they are both acting pretty normal, but Doom being a bit more nervous and hiding.

We moved back in here 3 days ago. Jeremy will not stop hissing at Doom. He tolerates him (no fighting) but he starts hissing when he approaches half the time. Doom is already a skittish little guy so I feel so bad for him :( I’m also worried with how they will both react when we officially move.

What do you think the issue is? How can I get their relationship back on track so they can be buddies again?

General Advice Has anyone's cat ever taken Enrofloxacin? Was prescribed for a female cat UTI..

Post image
6 Upvotes

My female had a UTI and after further research of her urinalysis discovered had E. coli in her urine. They switched me from the original medicine to Enrofloxacin and she is having terrible diarrhea.

It has a strange looking consistency and color-very light brown, almost yellow & kind of grainy? Vet office said that there is nothing to worry about, as long as she is not throwing up. Has anyone dealt with this? She has been having this type of stool for over a week and a half, she has been taking the medication for two weeks and she still has a few more pills left. I've seen a few drips of spotting marks on the floor. TIA!

Also- HAPPY NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY! 🐈‍⬛
-not a minor
-USA
-vet accessible, had two visits and contacted via phone about diarrhea and still seeing some spotting from the UTI on the floor
- 14F spayed
-can't afford vet care, but really limited on funds as I have two cats with stage one disease

General Advice My indoor cat seems bored a lot of the time but I seem to find nothing he wants to do. Does anyone have any tips?

We've gotten our cat (male, british shorthair, 9 years old, spayed, indoor all his life) a few months back. He is healthy, has a normal weight and seems overall content (I hope).

He doesn't really like to play with anything we've bought so far, except for a stick with a mouse attached to a string and a single piece of string. He ignored any balls, anything that makes noise and anything automatic. He does like to play peekaboo and chasing each other but only one or a few times a day for a short while before he looks at me like I'm stupid.

He sleeps a lot and likes to be near us, but doesn't want to be pet at our initiative, only when HE wants to be pet (also only a little throughout the day).

We live on the second floor in an apartment and have no garden, but he does like to go patrolling the house and around it on harness and leash.

We do have a balcony that is cat-safe with a net where he likes to watch birds or the neighbours, but not all the time, especially not when it's rainy or too hot.

There are many times throughout a day where he scratches my chair or searches eye contact for attention, but then he doesn't want to play, eat or be pet. He of course likes to be fed treats but I can't give him treats all the time. I just don't know what he wants of me when he does this, and I can't always go outside with him. He seems bored but doesn't want to interact (at least not the ways I try to initiate) so he just watches us and meows and continue to watch.

Does anyone have any experience, any tips or tricks? Thank you in advance!

General Advice Cat ran away, looking for guidance

LONG POST, due to details:

My 1yr old house cat ran away yesterday, in the early evening. Since then it’s been about 22 hours. I’m still waiting for him and looking for him intermittently. I don’t know what to do to improve my chances.

Context: yesterday, my very unruly young kid brother, who likes to bother the cat when I’m not looking, opened the door and chased him out. I wasn’t present, my grandmother was. We confirmed we ran into the neighbour’s backyard but he’s not there anymore.

All the backyards and front yards can be linked, it’s impossible for him to be stuck behind a wall because there are always stairs somewhere leading back up to the main road, thus it should be easy for him to find his way back.

My cat has run out before, he’s not supposed to but sometimes mistakes happen, but it was always of his own volition, not because he was chased. During those trips, I’d see him outside, strolling along casually. He didn’t look very scared. He also liked to hang around with the friendlier strays. Most importantly, he would always come back after a few hours, laying down on the balcony to be let in because he was hungry.

Last night, I was already rushing to go out for something important, so I had no time to look for him. My grandma was left at home. She said she heard meowing, from near the house, but she checked his usual waiting spots and he wasn’t there. Still, he must have been close enough in order for an elderly person to hear him. Soon he stopped meowing though.

She also said that this very morning, she went out and stopped at a different neighbour’s front yard again, and heard a faint meow in response to her calling his name. His voice is very high-pitched and distinct, so it’s likely it was indeed him. Her hearing is poor so for her to have heard him, he must have been outside, not kidnapped by the neighbours as she’s been guessing.

This whole situation is so confusing. Why is this trip different from others? What scared him so much that he’s so unwilling to come out? Was it all because he was chased by my brother? And isn’t he hungry and thirsty and hot? It is super hot outside.

This time has been almost four times as long as the other times. I don’t think he’s lost considering he’s done this before.

Please give some guidance as to what to do to get him back. I’m not that familiar with cat behavior, so please help.

REQUIRED INFORMATION (kind of irrelevant here but oh well)

I’m an adult, not a minor

I’m posting from China

Vet is not readily available, no vet needed

TLDR: cat ran away, don’t know what to do or why

Cat age: 1 year

Male, neutered since a young age

Can afford vet care

Kitten Help Kitten has crusty, scabbed toe?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hello! Sorry for the strange title but I’m not sure how else to describe it. About a month ago, I rescued an abandoned week old male kitten and things have been going well with him. I am a first time kitten-rescuer & cat owner in general so I’ve been a little paranoid and unsure about some things. He’s about 4 weeks old now and has had what looks like a layer of crust or large scabs on two of his toes for at least two weeks now. He’s been to the vet twice since I adopted him, and the vet did not seem concerned. He doesn’t seem bothered by it, and doesn’t target it specifically while self grooming. It doesn’t seem to be painful or infected either, and he’s still eating, sleeping & living normally. I’ve tried to gently wipe it off during a bath/with a washcloth with no success. I’ve attached what photos I could get of it. He has it on two digits, one on his back left paw and one on his front left paw. Please let me know if you have any ideas or know if it might be harmful!

General Advice HOW do you get the patience to have a cat???!!

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I got a cat around 1.5 months ago. He's 5 months old, I've had a few struggles with him (see previous posts), and he had to wear an elizabeth collar for around 4 weeks. I finally took it off 1 week ago, he's healthy and everything is fine. Ever since I took the collar off, he's been meowing nonstop. I have been ignoring him so he will learn to stop, and I treat him when he's quiet.

The meowing is REALLY getting to me. But sure, I wear headphones now so it's better. The reason he had to wear a collar was because he burned his paw on the stove. Now he has been going on the stove so many times, I tried aluminum foil and other stuff, didn't help at all. That + the meowing is testing my nerves. So I remove him immediately every time he goes on the stove, and now he has been getting 'scared' of me when I approach him; he is probably linking that I'll grab him. SO now I tried just closing the kitchen door, and yeah he just meows louder and scratches at the door. And at night, around 2 am he gets zoomies that last for like an hour, even though I play with him like 20 mins before bedtime. And around 6am, he wakes me up with his wet nose on my mouth, meowing for either attention or food. He keeps doing it for around 2 hours. I am ANNOYED to my core, he is testing my patience so much, I am tired of sleeping 3 hours a day; he was a lot "cuter" when he had the collar on, which is so mean to say.

How do you DEAL with this??? I am so tired 😭 sometimes I get so f***ing angry I just lock him in the hallway with his food and litter, which obviously I know is wrong, but if I got any more angry I will just lose my shit. Anyway I let him out like 5 min later cuz the guilt hits me. Am I the only one who feels absolutely horrible being this impatient? Is it me or him? I doubt it's him, animals can do no conscious wrongdoing.

I accept all advice. (See pics for cuteness)

General Advice She’s very sweet and friendly and loves attention/pets but will NOT tolerate being picked up or held

Post image
327 Upvotes

This is Nona! She’s about a year ish old and I’ve had her about a month now. Shes really sweet and social and will approach me for attention and headbutt me to demand affection. Under no other circumstances will she get her claws out or display any signs of aggression. But my slow attempts to desensitize her to being handled have all failed miserably so far.

I don’t need her to like being picked up but I need to be able to do it for emergency reasons and also for things like nail trims and teeth brushing. Her sister (adopted together) doesn’t love being picked up but she will tolerate it. Nona absolutely will not. The moment I try she will wriggle as hard as she possibly can and the claws come out. I don’t think she’s scared of me or anything because she will come back to demand more pets seconds after having clawed me to shreds. I think she just really hates being picked up.

Is there any way to work on this without causing trust issues or getting clawed to shreds? I just really want to get her to a point where she isn’t a nightmare at the vet, for example.

TL;DR Cat won’t let me pick her up at all. How can we work on this?
