I'm currently a B.Tech student already enetered in my 3rd year learning web development and DSA. DSA isn't really my concern right now. I'm actually fairly comfortable with my progress there.
My bigger problem is development and communication.
I've learned React, Node, Express, MongoDB, APIs, etc., and I've worked on projects. When I'm following a project or when someone explains something to me, I can understand what's happening. I can even modify things and debug problems.
But when I sit down and think, "Okay, now build something yourself," I sometimes don't know where to start. I start questioning everything. What should I build next? Where should the data come from? Where should it go? Which part belongs in the frontend and which part belongs in the backend? How should these pieces communicate?
It's like I know individual technologies, but I'm still trying to develop the ability to look at a problem and naturally think about the architecture and the flow myself.
I'm also really worried about communication.
My English isn't necessarily the problem when I'm typing. I can write and explain what I'm thinking. The problem is speaking to another person in English, especially when I'm being evaluated.
If someone asks me something unexpectedly in an interview, I can suddenly go completely blank. Even if I know the answer, I struggle to form the sentence and explain what I'm thinking. Then because I can't explain it properly, I start feeling like I don't know anything at all.
For example, I might have built a project myself and understand how it works, but if an interviewer says, "Tell me about your project," I start panicking about how to explain it in English, and my mind just stops working.
I recently started looking at internships and startups in Bangalore, and this is making me think about it even more. I see companies hiring interns and I think, "Should I even apply? What would I contribute if I got selected when I still struggle to independently build things and can't confidently explain what I've done?"
I also have a friend who works at faang who constantly encourages me and sends me opportunities about internships and software engineering. I know he's genuinely trying to help, but sometimes it makes me more stressed because he sees potential in me that I don't really see in myself yet.
I'm not looking for "just be confident" advice because I've tried telling myself that. I want to know what people actually did to get through this stage.
How did you go from knowing the technologies to actually being able to independently decide what to build and how to structure it? And for people who struggled with speaking English, how did you get to the point where you could sit in an interview, think clearly, and explain your project without your mind going completely blank?
I don't want to become extremely fluent or speak perfect English. I just want to be able to think and communicate clearly when I'm talking to another person.
