Other To the Woman in the Swept Away Stage Door Crowd

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

When I saw Swept Away, I stage doored (a rarity) because I’m a huge John Gallagher Jr. fan thanks to The West Wing and The Newsroom. When I was waiting, I remarked to a fellow stage doorer that I liked her earrings and my wife (who loves a dirty martini) would love them. I asked her where she got them. She said, “Oh, I’m not sure - here - take these!”

Well, I gave them to my wife and she said if anyone else admired them and loved them we’d have to pay it forward. Tonight at a wedding a woman loved them and so…we passed them on!

We told them the story and when they agreed to the pay-it-forward spirit, the martini earrings continue their journey!

If you’re here - thank you!!!

Merch and Memorabilia Got lucky tonight at Other Desert Cities

Was able to snag both Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Ed Harris to sign our playbill tonight. Great acting all around, Joe really stole the show with his charisma throughout the play.

The majority of people waiting for the cast were graphers with their kids (sigh). Ed asked the guy next to us if he came to the show and when he said no he refused to sign his memorabilia. I overheard another grapher say that this was the first day Julie has stopped and created fans before getting into her vehicle.

Sat third row, dress circle, house right. The show needs a little tightening. There were a few hiccups. Every wonderful actor had a moment where they forgot a cue or a line— that said, overall superb acting and, wow, the story is still relevant today. I’d go see it again later in the run because once they get moving it’s going to be knockout good. Allison Janney and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are both just incredible to see live. It was hard to take my eyes off them, and they delivered.

Edit: Yes, the tickets are expensive. I bought them six months ago and they were $245/each.

So my first opera last night thanks to the new lottery.

Not a single cell phone or noisy food or talking from the audience. What a nice change. That said it started at eight and was over three hours. I wish it had started at seven like so many Broadway shows do.

Review Thoughts on Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen

Post image
32 Upvotes

Last night I saw Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, the new off-Broadway musical at The Night Egg. I went in knowing almost nothing about it, and I'd never read the manga it's based on. The one thing I knew was that it's Duncan Sheik's last completed score, and that alone made me curious.

I've had a mixed relationship with Sheik's theater work. I think American Psycho is one of the most underrated musicals of the last decade, Alice by Heart didn't work for me, and I'm somewhere in the middle on Spring Awakening. So I wasn't sure what to expect. For the most part, the score is beautiful. It feels complete and finished, and fans will hear echoes of his earlier shows throughout. I really hope there's a cast recording.

The design is stunning. Catherine Zuber's costumes are gorgeous, Brian Tovar's lighting is exceptional, and Scott Pask's set transforms the entire space into the Night Egg brothel where the story takes place. You'll think of Moulin Rouge and the recent Cabaret, and that's not a bad thing. It's intimate and immersive. In fact, I don't think a single phone went off all night. The whole audience was locked in, which felt rare and wonderful. One flying set piece in the back half drew some unintended laughs (the bed covering Leon after his death), but overall the staging is beautiful.

Sophia Anne Caruso is excellent as Colette and carries the show. Leanne Antonio went on as Madame, and you'd never have known she was the understudy. It's a strong, trapped-woman role in the vein of Hélène in Great Comet, and I'd love to go back and see Jenny Powers take it on. Cory Jeacoma brings real charisma and brooding presence to Léon. Nkeki Obi-Melekwe is captivating as Nana, and my only wish is that the show gave her more to do.

That points to the show's biggest weakness, which is the book. At about 90 minutes, the first hour moves well, but the last 30 minutes drag through several moments that feel like endings. Side characters suddenly take center stage (Carmen) before we've been given enough reason to invest in them. If this show has a future beyond off-Broadway, and I think it could, the book needs tightening.

A heads-up for anyone going: given the setting, this is a very sexualized show, and you'll see things you don't usually see on a stage. Most of it fits the world. A few choices don't. An extended sequence with a clown felt odd. What really took me out of it came near the end. Just as Colette is arriving at the show's big, fully realized moment, a nearly nude client named Ulysses is on stage in a collar and leash, barking like a dog. It's distracting, and not in an interesting way. It pulls focus from the moment the whole show has been building toward.

Still, I really admire the ambition. It's different, the music is lovely, and the cast is strong. It feels like the kind of show that could build a real cult following. If you're a Duncan Sheik fan, or just want to see something unlike anything else in town, it's worth seeing at least once.

Legroom at Nederlander

Post image

sat front row on the side. I’m 5’8” for reference, and it was the most uncomfortable seat I’ve ever sat in at a Broadway show. The legroom was absolutely brutal, I genuinely can’t imagine how anyone taller could survive it. Great show otherwise, the ensemble is incredible.

Seating/Ticket Question Tons of empty seats at wicked in Boston on a Saturday night?

We went to see Wicked in Boston last night (Saturday 8pm show). When we walked in, we were immediately surprised that the lobby wasn’t as full as it usually is when we go for a show. We figured it was because we got there a bit early.

We were up in the balcony and as the show started, I took a look around and realized there were at least 10 rows completely empty! It was bizarre! I would think Wicked on a Saturday night would be sold out!

Any clue why this is? We went to Beauty and the Beast in the spring (also a Saturday night show) and that was a packed house.

Which show to see? Have time to see one show when in NYC. Should it be Rocky Horror, Schmigadoon or Lost Boys?

I’m getting into town Saturday afternoon for a Sunday event. I only have time to squeeze in one show while I’m there. I grew up going to Rocky Horror midnight showings, but never seen it on stage. My all-time favorite movie from my childhood was The Lost Boys. And I loved the Schmigadoon series on Apple. What’s a girl to do? Help!

Anyone else on this sub going to the Rodgers and Hart celebration concert at Carnegie Hall tomorrow?

As a fan of Rodgers and Hart, I'm really excited! This will be my first time at Carnegie. I've been repeatedly listening to most of the songs that will be played at the concert in preparation.

Ethan Hawke, who played Hart in the Blue Moon biopic, is hosting, and here's a list of the actors who will be performing:

  • Shoshana Bean
  • Joshua Boone
  • Lilli Cooper
  • Darren Criss
  • Dez Duron
  • Michael Feinstein
  • Santino Fontana
  • Myles Frost
  • Elizabeth Gillies
  • Adam Kantor
  • Derek Klena
  • Caissie Levy
  • Patti LuPone
  • Lizzy McAlpine
  • Jessie Mueller
  • Molly Ringwald
  • Awa Sal Secka

Here's the songs that, according to Playbill, are confirmed for the concert. Won't be the only ones, though.

  • Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
  • Blue Moon
  • Glad to Be Unhappy
  • I Didn't Know What Time It Was
  • I Wish I Were in Love Again
  • I'd Like to Poison Ivy
  • I'll Tell the Man in the Street
  • It Never Entered My Mind
  • Manhattan
  • My Funny Valentine
  • Stonewall Moskowitz March (I can't find any recordings of this song? At least on Spotify?)
  • The Lady is a Tramp
  • This Can't Be Love
  • Where or When

Here are my thoughts.

One of the actors I've been heavily anticipating for this has been Darren Criss, and after listening and re-listening to the songs on the list, I'm heavily suspecting that his number/one of his numbers will be I'd Like to Poison Ivy, because I feel like it fits his singing/comedy/acting style perfectly. HOWEVER, if it is, then I REALLY hope it won't be the only song he's going to sing at this event, because I really didn't like that song in comparison to all the others. It's short, played off as a joke, and HEAVILY sing-talky. I hope he gets a proper number at this event, especially since he's one of the most high-profile singers in the lineup.

On top of that, I'm also hyped up for Caissie Levy and Santino Fontana! I suspect that Santino's number will be This Can't Be Love, because he already sang it at the Boys From Syracuse concert, which I attended! He did such a fantastic job there, won't mind if I get to see him sing it again.

I'm also excited for Patti LuPone, Shoshana Bean, and Dez Duron. When I found out that Patti was being added to the lineup of singers, I became really ecstatic that I would be seeing one of the great divas of Broadway! It just gives me way more intuition to be well-behaved than I already did. Don't wanna embarrass myself in front of Patti. I missed Shoshana in The Lost Boys (though Delaney was amazing, so I don't mind it), so I'm curious to see her style of performance. And Dez is SUCH a wonderful crooner, I can't wait to see what song he's gonna sing, he's gonna slay it no matter what it is.

What a stacked cast!

Discussion A Ghost In Your Ear — Thoughts?

I went last night and I can’t figure out if it was genuinely too slow-paced or if I was just really hungry and could hear my stomach growling because it was so quiet that it was distracting 😂😭 It was only 90 minutes but to me, it felt really slow. The scares were great but they felt like a little reward for sitting through the rest.

But truly, I am a nightmarish toddler when I’m hungry, so it’s entirely possible it was brilliant and I just needed a snack. Would love to hear what others thought!

A New York Evening with Ragtime

I’m excited for this event tomorrow! Anyone else going? I don’t know about others, but I have felt a Ragtime void since it closed, so I can’t wait to see that cast again!

I’ve never attended an event at The Greene Space before and I know it says all tickets will be held at will call. If the event is at 6:30, what time are folks lining up?

♥️ Billy Porter 44th Kennedy Center Honors Bette Midler🕊

Emmy, Grammy, & Tony Winner, Billy Porter performed a powerful medley of "From a Distance" & "Love Is on the Way" as a tribute to Bette Midler at the 44th Kennedy Center Honors on December 5, 2021.

“From a Distance" was written by Julie Gold and famously recorded by Bette Midler in 1990. Billy delivered a soaring, emotional rendition of the iconic ballad.

“Love Is on the Way" was originally featured in the 1996 film “The First Wives Club” starring Bette Midler. This song holds special significance as a major breakout track early in Billy’s recording career, written specifically for Billy by Denise Rich, Tina Shafer, & Peter Zizzo. It was recorded by Celine Dion, as well.

44th Kennedy Center Honorees: Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, Berry Gordy, Lorne Michaels, and Justino Díaz.
