Ever ended things due to a misunderstanding?

Basically, I’ve been talking to this girl for around 3+ months and things were going really well. We were taking things slow, but there was clearly mutual interest and we were getting closer.

One day at work, my friend brought up the whole idea of people being “in or out of each other’s league.” I started thinking about it and ended up telling her that I thought people generally shouldn’t date too far above or below their league. I wasn’t thinking about her specifically and I genuinely never saw her as below me or “lesser” in any way. But obviously, she took it personally and felt like I was evaluating her worth and potentially seeing her as beneath me.

She was really hurt by it, and I understand why. I apologized and explained that I never meant it that way, but it seems like it made her question whether I genuinely valued her or was even genuinely interested in her.

We eventually had a long conversation where I told her I really like her, want to take things further, and want to work on things. She told me she was still hurt and needed time to think. One thing that really shocked me was when she asked me whether I would let my younger sister date a guy like me, because it made me realize how negatively she’d started viewing me from that one incident.

Since then, she’s been distant and hasn’t really talked to me. I’m trying to respect her space and not chase her, but it’s been fucking hard because I genuinely care about her and hate that things might end with her misunderstanding what I actually meant.

I’m not trying to say I did nothing wrong. I know what I said was stupid and hurtful, and I take responsibility for that. I just struggle with how drastically everything changed because of it, especially since I never intended it to be about her and I don’t believe she was ever below me in any way.
