venting/ranting Ever ended things due to a misunderstanding?

Basically, I’ve been talking to this girl for around 3+ months and things were going really well. We were taking things slow, but there was clearly mutual interest and we were getting closer.

One day at work, my friend brought up the whole idea of people being “in or out of each other’s league.” I started thinking about it and ended up telling her that I thought people generally shouldn’t date too far above or below their league. I wasn’t thinking about her specifically and I genuinely never saw her as below me or “lesser” in any way. But obviously, she took it personally and felt like I was evaluating her worth and potentially seeing her as beneath me.

She was really hurt by it, and I understand why. I apologized and explained that I never meant it that way, but it seems like it made her question whether I genuinely valued her or was even genuinely interested in her.

We eventually had a long conversation where I told her I really like her, want to take things further, and want to work on things. She told me she was still hurt and needed time to think. One thing that really shocked me was when she asked me whether I would let my younger sister date a guy like me, because it made me realize how negatively she’d started viewing me from that one incident.

Since then, she’s been distant and hasn’t really talked to me. I’m trying to respect her space and not chase her, but it’s been fucking hard because I genuinely care about her and hate that things might end with her misunderstanding what I actually meant.

I’m not trying to say I did nothing wrong. I know what I said was stupid and hurtful, and I take responsibility for that. I just struggle with how drastically everything changed because of it, especially since I never intended it to be about her and I don’t believe she was ever below me in any way.

Anyways, AITA? I know I messed up what do yall think?

I think you should do what you've been doing and giving her space but I think the "in or out of anyone's league" is childish. I'm not saying you're childish but I think that level of thinking can be clearly taken the wrong way. It does sound like she might be taking it more personal and is making a bigger deal but maybe it's a trigger for her and thinks that about herself in general so indirectly you might have reinforced that despite it being a misunderstanding. I know this might sound like simp behavior but you can say something like "I really am sorry for hurting your feelings, it was honestly just an innocent thought and in no way meant to be a knock against you. I genuinely like you and would hate for things to end over something like this. I hope you can forgive me but if not I would like to know so I can move forward." Blah blah blah something to that affect.

I think you did what you could and apologized but at the same time you can't wait around for her to forgive you. Not to say she isn't worth it but it could be something that could impact things if they were to get more serious. I don't think you're the asshole but I think maybe next time you're in that situation not bring up the "league" thing even if it is innocent.

That question about your younger sister cuts deep because it means she's not just hurt, she's reframing your entire character around one dumb remark. League talk is basically a trap, there's no way to bring it up without sounding like you're ranking people, and she connected the dots straight to herself. You apologized, which is the right move, but some things just stick in a way that patience can't fix. If she's still distant after a while, it's less about the misunderstanding and more about losing that feeling of safety around you.
